The final game of a hectic Christmas period in the Premier League will see Spurs and Chelsea go head-to-head in the late kick off on New Year’s Day.
Both sides go into the game off the back of a draw, which was a better result for Tottenham as they held Manchester United at home. Whereas Chelsea had to settle for a draw at Southampton, and they have now left the title race right in the balance.
The home side will be feeling good about getting a result and will definitely need to avoid defeat in their push for Champions League football. But this game is just as important for Chelsea, who need to keep winning games if they’re to maintain a gap ahead of Manchester City at the top of the table.
Tottenham’s home record: Played 10 – Won 4 – Drawn 2 – Lost 4
Mauricio Pochettino’s side have to keep improving their home form if they’re to compete with the other European football chasers and it will be a real signal of intent if they manage to do so against their London rivals.
Chelsea’s away record: Played 10 – Won 5 – Drawn 4 – Lost 1
Jose Mourinho’s men have been in brilliant home form, winning every game, but have clearly been weaker on their travels. Drawing games and Sunderland and Southampton are not results he would have wanted and the loss away at Newcastle is their only defeat in the league this season.
A trip to White Hart Lane will be another major challenge for Mourinho and his Chelsea side as they have only won one of the last six league meetings at Spurs in the Premier League.
Spurs against Chelsea is a game that never fails to entertain. The Blues won the reverse fixture earlier in the month 3-0, and have enjoyed solid form against their tough London rivals down the years.Embed from Getty Images
There have been three 1-1 draws between the two sides in the last four meetings at White Hart Lane – a result that wouldn’t be a surprising result this time around too.
