Sebastian Giovinco could be playing for Toronto FC a lot sooner than initially believed as the Juventus winger’s agent is reportedly flying out to Canada today to discuss the possibilities of an early transfer.
Giovinco, who turns 28 today, has already agreed to join Toronto with the move expected to happen in July, but his agent, Andrea D’Amico is set to meet Tim Leiweke and Tim Bezbatchenko in Toronto to try and arrange a move that will see him join the Reds in time for the new season, as reported by Tuttosport.
Giovinco is out of favour at Juventus but his contract with the club does not end until the summer, though the Serie A giants could be willing to let him leave in the next week if they can secure a move for Sassuolo forward Simone Zaza.
Juventus sporting director, Giuseppe Marotta revealed on Sunday that the club were trying to arrange a way that Giovinco could leave Turin as soon as possible.
“We’re talking with Giovinco, let’s see if there is the possibility he leaves right away,” Marotta said.
Toronto FC have signed the Italian playmaker on a free transfer and will not be willing to pay a fee to get him early as they have already invested millions of dollars in his contract, which is believed to be a five-year deal.
Tim Bezbatchenko revealed that the decision to bring in Giovinco early would have to be made by Juventus in an interview on Fan 590 last week.
“That was something we talked about at the beginning of negotiations. The sight for us had always been in July. I have not been in touch with them about the club letting him leave early. That is something that Juventus has to decide and whether or not their roster can handle that,” he said.
Juventus look set to allow Giovinco to leave, so long as they can sign a replacement in the next few days, and that would see the club terminate his contract by agreeing to pay out the final six months of his deal.
Toronto FC could be starting the season with Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco on the field in what promises to be an exciting season for the Reds.
