The 32-year-old is entering his sixth season with RSL and is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 60 in 113 appearances but has yet to win an MLS Cup with the team.
Real Salt Lake won their only ever championship in 2009, the year before Saborio joined, but have made the playoffs every year since and lost on penalties against Sporting Kansas City in the 2013 final.Embed from Getty Images
Saborio scored in normal time and then missed RSL’s first penalty in that final loss at Sporting Park but the Costa Rican star thinks that 2015 is the year that he wins his first MLS Cup with the Western Conference outfit.
“I want to win the title here, and I want the team to achieve good things in the Champions League. I feel it is time to become champion of the MLS. We will try,” Saborio is quoted as saying by La Nacion.
Saborio scored eight goals with four assists in 16 appearances last season but he missed a large chunk of the campaign through an injury that also ruled him out of the World Cup with Costa Rica.Embed from Getty Images
2014 was the first season that he was not Real Salt Lake’s top goalscorer as Joao Plata scooped that accolade but if Saborio can remain healthy through 2015 there is no reason why RSL can’t win their second MLS Cup title.
The 2015 MLS season is set to be the most competitive ever and Real Salt Lake will have to beat the likes of the Seattle Sounders and LA Galaxy in the Western Conference just to reach the MLS Cup final.
What do you make of Alvaro Saborio’s comments? Can Real Salt Lake win the MLS Cup in 2015?
