Frank Lampard may not be joining up with his New York City FC teammates until the end of the current Premier League season in the summer but he will still hope to make an impact in the club’s inaugural MLS season.
Much has already been said of the decision for Lampard to join into the season, most of it negative, and so it will be interesting to see how quickly he can form a bond with fellow Designated Player David Villa in New York.
Villa has worked with some of the best midfielders in Europe to date and Lampard certainly remains in that category, despite being 36, and has had many successful partnerships with forwards over the years.
Villa has already scored New York City FC’s first-ever goal this preseason and he will be looking to be in and amongst the goals all season. Lampard can play a crucial role in how many Villa scores but coming into the side midseason may make things a little more difficult for the pair.
There is little doubt that Lampard will settle quickly in Major League Soccer, as he has done so with various clubs during his career – none more so than with Manchester City this season, though things could have been smoother for him if he had been linking up with the squad earlier.
We can expect the impact Lampard makes for NYCFC to be positive and a quick bond forming between him and Villa will be essential if they are to make a first season playoff surge.
David Villa has played as a wide man at some stages of his career but is expected to lead the attack for Jason Kreis and New York City this year. The Spaniard will be relishing the prospect of playing alongside Lampard but will have to hold that thought for now.
The countdown to the season is on but the waiting game for Lampard and Villa to link up will go on until the English midfielder joins in July.
Will David Villa and Frank Lampard form a lethal partnership in New York City this season?
