David Villa has been a key figure in each of the sides he has played for and this no more so applies than to New York City FC. He will lead the MLS Expansion Franchise in their debut season and will need to set an example with NYCFC.
Villa, who has previously captained both Valencia CF and his national side, Spain said: “I am honoured to be your captain and proud to wear this armband.”
Villa and his teammates take on Orlando City in their first-ever MLS game in two weeks time to start their season and the 33-year-old forward will lead the side out providing he is fit.
The World Cup winner is already setting an example to his teammates and showed his importance to the side yesterday, claiming the assist for Khiry Shelton’s equaliser against Orlando City in their 1-1 preseason draw.
Villa’s wealth of experience at the top level of the game makes him an ideal captain and his presence, not only in the dressing room but on the pitch too, is going to be vital for NYCFC.
Villa will be under intense pressure come the start of the season and the New York City fans will have huge expectations of him. As we know he is more than used to being under the spotlight and is capable of changing any game with his goalscoring abilities.
The season is edging ever closer and it will be interesting to see how David Villa and his NYCFC side shape up.
