Former Arsenal forward claims Gunners are Chelsea’s biggest title rivals

Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas believes his former club, Arsenal are the best-placed team to challenge Chelsea for the Premier League title this season.

Chelsea top the table and are seven points ahead of Arsenal despite having played a game less. The Blues still have to travel to the Emirates and if Nicholas’ prediction is right, that could be seen as a title decider.

Arsene Wenger’s side have won their last six league games on the bounce and boast the best form in the top flight at the moment. Chelsea have won four and drawn two of their last six but still look to be in a very strong position to win the title.

Jose Mourinho’s side could be out of sight by now, but their inability to see out games is leading people to believe they could yet be caught and Nicholas certainly emphasises that.

“All it takes is a couple of draws from Chelsea for an opportunity to arise, and Arsenal have Chelsea at home still to come,” the Scotsman is quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

Nicholas hasn’t said Arsenal are yet contenders for the title, but reveals he thinks Arsenal have to be ready to pounce on any chance they get.

“If Chelsea do slip up, Arsenal are the team with the momentum right now, not Manchester City.

“So, let’s go for second at the very least, and if Chelsea wobble then let’s take advantage of them, that’s what Arsenal can do.”

Based on the last six performances by Manchester City it is hard to disagree with Nicholas, as despite winning four, they have lost twice and have been putting in too many below-par performances.

The race for the title is reaching boiling point with less than ten games to go and although Chelsea should win it from the position they are in, all three of the clubs in contention will be focusing on the Premier League after going out of the Champions League at the same stage in the last couple of weeks.

Arsenal take on Liverpool after the international break in a must-win game for the Gunners, both to keep the pressure on Chelsea and Manchester City but also to fend off clubs below them chasing the Champions League spots.

If Chelsea are to beat Leicester City in their game in hand, the race for the title should be all but over, but until they are out of sight the chasers have to keep believing they can be caught, an idea shared by Nicholas.

“They have to be more ambitious than settling for the top three.

“But Arsenal can’t stop at that, they have to strive for the league title. They’re not contenders right now, but you have to be ready in case Chelsea slip up.”
