The new Major League Soccer season is underway but two of the league’s impending stars are yet to play a game as Manchester City’s Frank Lampard and Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard are still focusing on their final Premier League season’s.
The English midfielders will both make the move to MLS this summer as Lampard will finally join up with expansion franchise New York City FC, while Gerrard will team up with reigning MLS Cup champions, the LA Galaxy.
Both will join the league at the midpoint of the season and will look to spark a rich run of form leading up to the MLS Playoffs at the end of the year.

“I am pleased for Stevie,” the Manchester City midfielder told Press Association. “I think it is a very good move for him and I think it is great for the league. People in Europe at the top leagues are talking about MLS. Players will go there.
“I look forward to being competitive against Stevie. We get on very well, particularly in our latter years as captain and vice-captain of England. I have a huge amount of respect for him.”
Lampard admits that he has been watching New York City’s opening games on television here in the UK and is excited to join up with his new teammates in a few months.
“I’ve watched their games and thought they looked fantastic, the home game particularly. I thought the atmosphere in the ground, the crowd – I’ve had feedback from inside the club about what a buzz there is for it in the city. I was delighted for the lads.Embed from Getty Images
“There were question marks over it before – this is a completely new thing for so many of us. Who knows? What I do know is the people behind the scenes have done an amazing job. I hope it goes from strength to strength.”
One of the key factors in NYCFC kicking on this season will be how well Lampard adapts to life in another country and fans across MLS have huge expectations for the former Chelsea star.
His delayed move to New York has left some fans angry and the only way Lampard can go about trying to heal those wounds is by putting in solid displays on the field.
