Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin has put in some impressive performances this season. He has drawn comparisons with the likes of Nemanja Matic and is flattered to be compared to the likes of invincible legend Patrick Vieira.
The Frenchman has been contributing to the industrial side of the game and takes care of the ‘dirty work’ in the middle of the park for Arsene Wenger’s side – something the club have needed over recent seasons.
The Arsenal faithful have been crying out for a hard-working defensive midfielder and Coquelin has been making some headway to be a first-team regular for years to come.
Coquelin would love to be considered the Vieira type of player Gunners fans are crying out for but knows consistent performances dictate such praise.
“I’m not going to say I am [a Vieira replacement],” he is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror. “Obviously I want to be, but I think it’s down to the performance I put in every week so I’m just trying to give my best every game so hopefully I can do that in the long term.
“I’m trying to do the defensive work for the players who play up front, trying to give my best, get the ball as quick as possible to play it to the players who have got a little bit more ability than me on the ball.”

“I think we lacked a little bit of aggression in midfield and that’s what I’m trying to bring to the team.”
Coquelin could continue to play an essential part in Arsenal’s run in, and will hope to impress on Saturday lunchtime against Liverpool at the Emirates.
Can Francis Coquelin emulate Patrick Vieira as Arsenal’s midfield powerhouse?
