Everton manager Roberto Martinez is looking to bolster his defence in the coming months and is lining up a move for former Arsenal and current FC Barcelona centre-back Thomas Vermaelen, according to Tuttomercatoweb.
The Belgian defender penned a five-year contract with the Catalan giants last summer but has yet to play a game for his new club after an injury-hit first season, and Barca could be willing to cash in on him if the right offer arrives.
They paid Arsenal £15 million last year but it is unlikely they will receive an offer near that amount after such a disappointing campaign.
Vermaelen is rated at £5.2 million by transfermarkt.co.uk and an Everton bid could be on the way as Martinez looks to replace 37-year-old Frenchman Sylvain Distin, whose contract is up at the end of the season.
Vermaelen still has lots of football ahead of hims at 29 so long as he can regain his fitness and would be a good signing for a Toffees team that has underperformed this season.
Would Thomas Vermaelen be a good signing for Everton this summer?
