The 28-year-old midfielder has been with Chelsea for nine seasons and has two years remaining on his current deal, but could be on the way out of the club this summer as he has fallen down the pecking order.
Cesc Fabregas, Nemanja Matic, Ramires and Kurt Zouma are all seemingly ahead of Mikel in Jose Mourinho’s midfield hierarchy and so a move to Madrid could come at the perfect time for the Nigerian international.
A move to a club as big as Real Madrid may not appear to make sense on the surface as he will not be guaranteed any more playing time than with Chelsea but a change of scenery may be enough to please the experienced holding midfielder.
He has made the lowest number of Premier League appearances this season since joining Chelsea, with just 12, and his agent John Shittu has done little to calm speculation of a move to Spain.
“I can’t talk about anything regarding reports linking John with Real Madrid because he’s still a Chelsea player,” Shittu is quoted as saying by the Daily Express.
Former Chelsea head coach Roberto Di Matteo is also interested in Mikel and could try and bring him to German club Schalke.
The Nigerian featured in a team video released today to counter claims that the Blues are ‘boring’ as Mikel heads in the final touch in a fine team move at the dinner table.
Mikel has won ten trophies with Chelsea during his time with the Blues and is set to add a second Premier League title to that list in the next few weeks.
Does John Obi Mikel have a future at Chelsea? Would a move to Real Madrid make sense?
