Liverpool set to complete “imminent” signing of Barcelona defender – report

Liverpool are closing in on the signing of FC Barcelona right-back Martin Montoya with a completed deal “imminent”, according to Spanish newspaper Sport.

Montoya has been linked with a move to the Premier League on numerous occasions, and despite having three years left on his current Barca contract, the 24-year-old defender could be on his way to Liverpool.

A £7.2 million move has been rumoured as Brendan Rodgers looks to bolster his backline ahead of next season.

Glen Johnson’s contract is not set to be renewed and he will therefore leave on a free transfer at the end of the campaign, while Jon Flanagan has also yet to be offered a new deal after a season marred by injury.

That would leave Javier Manquillo as the only recognised right-back at the club and so the signing of Montoya is one that makes sense.

Dani Alves has been linked with a Barcelona exit for many months, having yet to pen a new deal, but the Spanish giants are expected to offer the Brazilian a new contract and will therefore be more reluctant to allowing Montoya to leave.

The Spanish defender has made a total of 67 appearances for Barcelona over the past five seasons and has won the league title twice in that time, as well as the Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana.

Would Martin Montoya be a good signing for Liverpool?
