Real Salt Lake players and staff happy to return to familiar formation

Real Salt Lake are back on track after returning to a more familiar 4-4-2 formation in their last two outings. They had been without a win in four games but ended that run with 2-1 win away at Chicago Fire last weekend.

Head coach Jeff Cassar opted to go back to a 4-4-2 variation for the games against La Galaxy and the Fire and could well line up in a similar fashion for their upcoming tie against Montreal Impact on Saturday.

Cassar is pleased with the impact returning to 4-4-2 has had and thinks it is important RSL make the most of the time spent with the ball.

“I think possession has been better,” he is quoted as saying by “You can have all the possession that you want, but you have to have purpose with your possession. I think we’ve had that.”

Cassar’s views were shared by defender, Tony Beltran, but the full-back doesn’t want to get too hung up on his side’s last two results.

“It’s only two games, there’s so many games, so I don’t want to say anything [too drastic]. I think that Wednesday was a better performance, and obviously Saturday we got a good result, but we have to continue to string those performances and results together if we want to be an elite team.”

Beltran is far happier with ball retention after switching to 4-4-2 and thinks it suits his sides passing game.

“I’ve always said that we have a lot of success when our midfielders are able to combine within 15 to 20 yards.

“That’s when we can really move the ball around teams and get the ball side-to-side, and that’s where we’ve had a lot of our past success. So I think switching into that with a 4-4-2 helps.”

We will see this weekend if Cassar opts for 4-4-2 again or if he plans to switch things up once more. He will be looking for his side to continue to climb the Western Conference and keep the pressure on the sides above with a second consecutive win against a Montreal side yet to seal a victory in MLS this season.

Is 4-4-2 the right option for Jeff Cassar and Real Salt Lake?
