Match Preview

Newcastle United take on Arsenal this weekend as Steven McClaren’s side look for their first win of the new Premier League campaign.

The Magpies can feel a little unlucky with their start to the season, but are looking a far more settled club than in the 14/15 campaign and things are certainly on the up. Sitting 17th in the table doesn’t reflect their efforts so far.

They come into the game off the back of a 4-1 midweek win over League Two’s Northampton Town in the League Cup. Florian Thauvin was easily their best performer, being involved in all four goals including scoring one himself. He will be hoping that performance will have earned him a starting place for this one.

Last time out in the league Newcastle picked up a respectable point at Old Trafford against Manchester United, McClaren knows this game will be a test but will be eager for his players to continue working hard and find that first win of the season.

Arsenal have had a slightly slow start to the season and come into this one off the back of Monday nights draw against Liverpool.

Arsene Wenger’s side are looking strong but could still be lacking another signing, with injury woes already this early on in the season Gunners fans will be praying it doesn’t hamper their title chances.

The North London side will feel confident going into the tie given their form against Newcastle in recent years, having won the last seven meetings between the sides in all competitions.

In those last seven meetings Arsenal have scored 20 against Newcastle, if that is anything to go by we could be in for a goal-fest this weekend.

Team News

Newcastle could be without up to three first-team players through injury. Moussa Sissoko looks doubtful, while Emmanuel Riviere and Sylvain Marveaux are set to miss out.

Arsenal have five injury concerns. Centre-backs Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker could miss out, so Wenger may well deploy the same back four which kept Liverpool out on Monday night. Jack Wilshere’s injury saga continues, while Tomas Rosicky and Danny Welbeck are also out.

Key Points

Newcastle United’s last five in the Premier League: D/L/D

Arsenal’s last five in the Premier League: L/W/D

Key Stat: Newcastle have failed to win 13 of their last 14 Premier League games.

Key Player: Petr Cech –  Arsenal’s last-line of defence showed why he was such an important signing on Monday night with a spectacular performance, pulling off some world-class saves. If he is in that kind of form for this one Newcastle will find it very hard to put the ball passed him.

Score Prediction

Newcastle United 0-2 Arsenal – Wenger’s side to prove too strong for Newcastle and continue their great run of form against the Toon Army.

  1. “Manchester United 3-1 Newcastle United – We can see this game being controlled from the off by Manchester United through their domination of possession. We feel that they have too much in attack for the Newcastle backline, which has had to be altered due to injuries and suspensions and that should see the hosts capitalise with a one-sided victory. Man United’s solid home form and Newcastle’s poor away form suggests this game can only go one way and that is a Manchester United win.”

Can only go one way….. And Newcastle couldn’t possibly beat Arsenal either. Never happen……
