The 2016 MLS season got off to a flyer on Sunday, with a league-record 36 goals going in on the opening day’s action. The season started in New York, where reigning Supporters’ Shield winners New York Red Bulls took on Toronto FC.
Before the match, the Red Bulls enjoyed their latest Supporters’ Shield banner ceremony before kickoff but were ultimately left disappointed with the outcome of their 2016 opener.
The Red Bulls dominated most of the game but couldn’t find the crucial goal to put them in front. They were punished for that late on as two Toronto strikes in the final ten minutes earned the Canadians an important 2-0 win.
Giovinco slotted away a penalty in the 81st minute after Kemar Lawrence brought down rookie forward Tsubasa Endoh, before Marky Delgado sealed the win with a cool finish in stoppage time.
