MLS Preview and Prediction: Toronto FC vs Vancouver Whitecaps

Toronto vs Vancouver Whitecaps Preview and Prediction

Competition: Major League Soccer – Toronto FC vs. Vancouver Whitecaps

Venue: BMO Field – Saturday, May 14 – 19:30 ET (00:30 BST)

Match Odds: Toronto FC 4/5 – Draw  13/5 – Vancouver Whitecaps 7/2

Match Preview

Toronto FC host Vancouver Whitecaps in their second of four consecutive games at BMO Field following renovations to the stadium over the past few months. The home side will want a repeat of last week’s performance when they ran out 1-0 winners over Dallas in their home opener.

Three wins from their last five signal the intent and the ability Toronto have to push on this year and with Jozy Altidore now back partnering Sebastian Giovinco, they have the forwards to help complement their new and improved defence.

Keeping a clean sheet in three of their last four matches highlights the difference the defensive additions like Drew Moor and Clint Irwin have made on the side and things are looking up for Greg Vanney’s men. They sit 3rd in the Eastern Conference ahead of this tie, trailing top spot by just one point.

Toronto Celebrate New York Red Bulls

Vancouver have the same form as Toronto, so with three wins in their last five, it seems the perfect time for the two Canadian sides to meet.

Back-to-back wins over Portland and Chicago – both ending 2-1 – mean the Whitecaps are into the playoff places in the West and they will want to improve after a slow start to the 2016 campaign.

Fans will be disappointed so far considering the 2015 form the Whitecaps had but will want to at least make the playoffs come the end of the regular season.

Team News

Toronto FC are missing three players for the visit through injury. Clement Simonin (knee), Benoit Cheyrou (thigh) and Jonathan Osorio (ankle) all look unlikely to feature.

Vancouver Whitecaps will be without Christian Dean (foot) and Deybi Flores (adductor). Octavio Rivero is a doubt and isn’t expected to feature.

Key Points

Toronto FC’s last five: D/W/W/L/W

Vancouver Whitecaps’ last five: W/D/L/W/W

Key Stat: Vancouver have never beaten Toronto away from home.

Key Player: Sebastian Giovinco – The Italian forward has become the most influential player in the league and when he performs anywhere near his best, Toronto win.

Score Prediction

Toronto FC 1-1 Vancouver Whitecaps – Both sides have won three of their last five and will have ambitions for a successful season with playoff spots within reach. We expect this to be a good game with two good defences trying to keep each other at bay. Both have reason for optimism ahead of this clash but they might just cancel each other out come full time. Score draw.

  1. I like your optimism, Jamie! With Kendall Waston suspended on yellow accumulation, I sadly can’t share those happy feelings. I simply don’t see my ‘Caps leaving with a point without the big man on the backline. 2-1 TOR
