Match Preview

Toronto FC welcome Chicago Fire to BMO Field on Saturday evening in an all Eastern Conference tie which might be a tighter affair than expected.

Toronto have been in a bit of a rut of form and while it would be unfair to label them a one man team, unfavourable results for the TFC faithful have coincided with Sebastian Giovinco’s goal drought.

Greg Vanney’s side have been slipping down the East and now sit in sixth, just four points ahead of Chicago who are bottom. Toronto come into this one off the back of their 1-1 draw with Seattle.

This is a chance for Toronto to get back to winning ways but it is by no means going to be a straightforward tie. They have only conceded one goal less and scored three more than Chicago so far this season.

Despite sitting bottom of the East, Chicago Fire are by no means out of the running to challenge for a playoff place.

Veljko Paunović’s side have a game in hand on Toronto ahead of this tie, so the gap could potentially be as little as three points.

Chicago have been in a far better run of form over the last five games, picking up seven points. They come into this one off the back of their 1-0 win over San Jose.

Team News

Toronto FC are expected to have six players missing for this tie as Jozy Altidore, Daniel Lovitz, Ashtone Morgan, Clint Irwin, Michael Bradley and Will Johnson are all injured.

Chicago Fire have five injury concerns heading into this tie. Collin Fernandez, Matt Polster, Arturo Alvarez, Khaly Thiam and Joey Calistri are all doubtful.

Key Points

Toronto FC’s last five: D/L/W/L/D

Chicago Fire’s last five: W/D/L/L/W

Key Stat: Endless run? Chicago Fire seem to be on a never ending winless run away from home. They have lost their last 24 away games in Major League Soccer.

Key Player: Sebastian Giovinco – This is a tie Giovinco will be expecting to bring his dry spell to an end. He hasn’t scored in any of his last six regular season outings, but we all know the qualities he has and you can’t keep a good man down.

Score Prediction

Toronto FC 2-1 Chicago Fire – Toronto to get back to winning ways and increase Chicago’s winless run on the road. This has the makings of a tight affair given the form of the sides coming into the game.
