Portland Timbers faced off against their arch rivals, Seattle Sounders on Sunday night in the latest clash in the Cascadia rivalry series, with the Timbers sealing a 3-1 victory to move them back into the playoff spots in the Western Conference.
Both sides came into Sunday’s game needing all three points and the incredible atmosphere inside Providence Park would have certainly reminded the players just how much was at stake.
Seattle sorely missed star man Clint Dempsey, who missed the game through suspension. Portland had no such worry as Diego Valeri returned to the side and put in a superb display, netting twice either side of halftime to guide the Timbers to a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Chad Marshall then headed Seattle back into contention on the hour mark, but any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished when Fanendo Adi struck on 64 minutes to seal a 3-1 win for the home side.
Portland will be delighted with the result. But for Seattle, it was another frustrating night. They are left struggling down in ninth place in the West, nine points off the top six as we enter the final stages of the regular season.
