The Seattle Sounders are officially up and running after picking up their first win of the new season in their home opener against a New York Red Bulls side who suffered defeat in an MLS regular season game for the first time in 19 matches.
Clint Dempsey’s penalty put the Sounders up 1-0 at halftime before Bradley Wright-Phillips headed the visitors back into the game just 12 minutes into the second half. But the hosts showed great resilience and their positive approach to the game was rewarded when Jordan Morris headed them back in front on 66 minutes.
The points were wrapped up on 79 minutes as Joevin Jones’ shot was deflected in off the inside of Harry Shipp’s right foot, given Seattle a much-needed victory and ending the Red Bulls’ 18-game unbeaten streak in regular season play.
