Competition: Major League Soccer – San Jose Earthquakes vs. Seattle Sounders
Venue: Avaya Stadium – Saturday, April 8 – 22:30 ET (03:30 BST)
Match Odds: San Jose 6/5 – Draw 9/4 – Seattle 21/10
San Jose Earthquakes welcome Seattle Sounders to Avaya Stadium on Saturday evening in a game that is set to be tightly contested between the two Western Conference sides.
The Quakes have won both of their home games so far this season but have lost their two away. They come into this one having lost those two on the bounce, the latest defeat coming last weekend in that 2-1 defeat against NYCFC.
San Jose’s defence has been put under pressure ahead of this tie due to injuries and suspensions, which is why a visit from the reigning MLS Champions is the last thing they will be looking forward to.
Seattle Sounders began their title defence with a loss but have since looked in better shape. They are unbeaten in three, drawing their previous game 0-0 at home to Atlanta last Friday.
On the face of it the Sounders would have been expecting to win last week. Some of the squad were tired from the international break but they’ve not used that as an excuse. They will need to make better use of their chances in front of goal this weekend if they are to take a positive result.
Just one point separates San Jose and Seattle in the Western Conference, so there is a lot to play for. Brian Schmetzer will have his side warned of the threat Chris Wondolowski poses, he has netted 10 of the Quakes 25 goals against Seattle in the all-time series between the two.
San Jose Earthquakes are expecting Diego Rubio, Harold Cummings and Benny Feilhaber to be unavailable for selection this weekend. Victor Bernardez is suspended.
Seattle are set to be without Brad Evans and Aaron Kovar through injury, while Oniel Fisher is questionable.
San Jose Earthquakes’ form: W/W/L/L
Seattle Sounders’ form: L/D/W/D
Key Stat: San Jose have not lost at home to Seattle Sounders in the last seven meetings in all competitions.
Key Player: Nicolas Lodeiro – The Sounders playmaker is going to need to have to be at his creative best if his side are going to come away from San Jose with all three points.
San Jose Earthquakes 2-2 Seattle Sounders – The Western Conference sides to share the points. San Jose’s good run against Seattle Sounders looks set to continue. A draw on the face of it doesn’t do much for either of the two but they’re making steps in the right direction.
