MLS Preview and Prediction: Seattle Sounders vs LA Galaxy

Major League Soccer: Seattle Sounders vs LA Galaxy

CenturyLink Field – Sunday, September 10 – 21:00 ET (02:00 BST)

Match Odds: Seattle 4/9 – Draw 100/30 – LA Galaxy 5/1

Seattle Sounders vs LA Galaxy: Preview

The Seattle Sounders welcome LA Galaxy to CenturyLink Field on Sunday night as Sigi Schmid returns to his former club with a struggling LA side.

The Sounders come into the weekend at the top of the West. However, they could be down in third by the time they kick off on Sunday, depending on other results.

Seattle drew 1-1 in back-to-back Cascadia Cup clashes against rivals Vancouver and Portland. They are unbeaten in ten home games in MLS, having last lost in front of their own fans back in May.

LA Galaxy are 11 points outside the playoffs heading into the weekend. That margin could be even greater by the time this game kicks off. Another defeat would surely end their hopes of making the postseason.

The Galaxy picked up their first MLS win in two months last time out. That 3-0 win against Colorado snapped a nine-game winless run. If they can make it two wins on the spin, they will believe they can make a dramatic late charge for the playoffs.

But LA have lost five consecutive away games in all competitions. Sigi Schmid might be returning to his old stomping ground, but he’s unlikely to find any joy with his new team.

This will be the last of three meetings between the two this season. Seattle won 3-0 at StubHub Center back in April, before they played out a 0-0 draw in Schmid’s first game in charge of the Galaxy in July.

Seattle Sounders vs LA Galaxy: Team News

Seattle Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer will be without Nouhou Tolo after his red card last time out. Brad Evans is injured, while Harry Shipp is listed as ‘questionable’.

LA Galaxy are still without four players through injury. Robbie Rogers, Sebastian Lletget, Pele van Anholt and Baggio Husidic are all out for the season. Romain Alessandrini and Jermaine Jones are one booking away from suspension.

Seattle Sounders vs LA Galaxy: Key Points

Seattle Sounders’ last five: W/W/W/D/D

LA Galaxy’s last five: L/L/L/L/W

Key Stat: Seattle Sounders are unbeaten at home in ten MLS games.

Key Player: Clint Dempsey – The Sounders star has seven goals in his last eight MLS outings. He will be looking to keep his form going as Seattle look to stay atop the West.

Seattle Sounders vs LA Galaxy: Prediction

Seattle Sounders 3-1 LA Galaxy – Goals are to be expected on Sunday night. The Galaxy have to go for it, given their position in the West. Anything other than a win for the visitors would likely spell the end of their playoff hopes. Seattle are a force at home though and will be wanting to stay at the top of the West for the rest of the season. The hosts should prove too strong.

MLS Preview and Prediction: LA Galaxy vs New York City FC

Major League Soccer: LA Galaxy vs New York City FC

StubHub Center – Saturday, August 12 – 23:00 ET (04:00 BST)

Match Odds: LA Galaxy 13/8 – Draw 12/5 – NYCFC 6/4

LA Galaxy vs New York City FC: Preview

LA Galaxy welcome New York City FC to StubHub Center on Saturday, looking to end their eight-game winless run in MLS. The Galaxy are struggling to build any form and are in real danger of missing out on the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

Curt Onalfo was replaced by Sigi Schmid but results haven’t picked up. A 0-0 draw at home to the Sounders was followed by a 3-1 road loss to Portland last weekend. The Galaxy come into the weekend in 9th place in the West and nine points outside the playoffs.

Failure to win on Sunday would surely leave LA with too much to do in their remaining 11 games. Especially when you consider they still have trips to Columbus, Seattle, Atlanta, Sporting KC, Houston and FC Dallas to come.

New York City FC look well on course for their second-successive playoff appearance. Patrick Vieira’s men have had a bit of a wobble over the past few weeks. But they proved their credentials by once again beating local rivals New York Red Bulls last Sunday.

David Villa fired a hat-trick in that 3-2 win, moving NYCFC four points behind league leaders Toronto FC. The visitors are ten points above the red line in the Eastern Conference. A playoff berth is all but guaranteed, but the aim will be to go into the postseason in the strongest form possible.

This will be the only regular season meeting between the two teams this season. They have only met twice before, with the series tied at one win each. The Galaxy beat New York City 5-1 in their first ever meeting at StubHub in 2015, before NYCFC responded with a 1-0 home win 12 months ago.

LA Galaxy vs New York City FC: Team News

LA Galaxy remain without long-term absentees Sebastian Lletget, Baggio Husidic and Robbie Rogers. Jonathan Dos Santos is in line for his first MLS start after coming off the bench last week. Jelle Van Damme and Bradley Diallo are available after serving suspensions at Portland. Romain Alessandrini is one booking away from suspension, so will need to watch his step.

New York City will be without four players on Saturday. Maxine Chanot, Ronald Matarrita, Miguel Camargo and James Sands are all out. Rodney Wallace is in line to make his first MLS appearance since June after recovering from an adductor strain. Maxi Moralez picked up his fifth yellow card of the season last time out and will serve a one-game suspension as a result.

LA Galaxy vs New York City FC: Key Points

LA Galaxy’s last five: L/L/L/D/L

NYCFC’s last five: L/D/W/L/W

Key Stat: LA Galaxy are winless in their last eight home games in MLS. That’s their longest streak since 2010. They’ve only managed to score seven goals in those eight games too.

Key Player: David Villa – The New York City hitman comes into the weekend off the back of scoring his first MLS hat-trick. The Spaniard netted three in last week’s New York derby and comes into the weekend as the league’s leading scorer with 17 goals. Given the Galaxy’s struggles this year, Villa can expect to be at the forefront of the action on Saturday.

LA Galaxy vs New York City FC: Prediction

LA Galaxy 1-3 New York City FC – The fact is, this is not the sort of LA Galaxy team we’re used to seeing. They lack a clinical edge and confidence is all but gone. They face a real uphill battle if they are to make the playoffs and an in-form NYCFC will be able to smell blood here. Vieira’s men looked lethal against the Red Bulls when going forward last week and will prove too strong for the Galaxy if they are in a similar mood here.

Gallery: Portland Timbers 3-1 LA Galaxy – Portland down the Galaxy as Jonathan Dos Santos makes MLS debut

Portland Timbers celebrated their first win at Providence Park in almost two months by beating LA Galaxy 3-1 on Sunday. Goals from Liam Ridgewell, Diego Valeri and Alvas Powell proved too much for a struggling Galaxy side.

Portland hadn’t won at home in three consecutive games before Sunday’s game. But they made sure they remain on track for the playoffs with a comfortable win in the end. The Timbers took the lead inside five minutes, with Ridgewell heading in from close range.

However, their lead lasted less than a minute. LA Galaxy hit them back straight from the restart, with Emmanuel Boateng racing through on goal and slotting past Jake Gleeson.

The Galaxy then looked on top. They piled pressure on Portland’s defence and thought they’d gone ahead when Gyasi Zardes tapped in from close range in the 11th minute. But referee Drew Fischer used the newly-implemented Video Review system to check the goal. After the review, the goal was chalked off and Zardes was booked for a handball in the lead up the goal.

Portland made the most of the decision and then re-took the lead themselves on 31 minutes. Jermaine Jones made a mess of an attempted interception, allowing Valeri a sight of goal. The playmaker still had a lot to from 25 yards, but he rifled a shot into the top corner, sending the hosts in 2-1 up at the break.

The Timbers made it 3-1 just eight minutes after the restart, with Alvas Powell blasting in from close range after a backheel assist from Fanendo Adi. LA couldn’t respond, even after sending new DP signing Jonathan Dos Santos onto the field in the 64th minute.

Dos Santos made his MLS debut for the Galaxy exactly two years after brother Giovani did so for the Galaxy. The two Mexican internationals will now hope to get the Galaxy out of their poor run of form. They are nine points outside the playoffs with 12 games to play. The game finished Portland Timbers 3-1 LA Galaxy.

MLS Preview and Prediction: Portland Timbers vs LA Galaxy

Major League Soccer: Portland Timbers vs LA Galaxy

Providence Park – Sunday, August 6 – 14:00 ET (19:00 BST)

Match Odds: Portland 1/2 – Draw 16/5 – LA Galaxy 9/2

Portland Timbers vs LA Galaxy: Preview

Portland Timbers take on LA Galaxy on Sunday afternoon at Providence Park. The Western Conference sides are both on an inconsistent run of form. The game has been moved forward two hours due to the forecasted extreme heat.

The Timbers come into this one having drawn away at Houston. They have only lost one in their last six, but have picked up just seven points from 18 on offer.

Portland are sitting comfortably in the top six and still have a realistic chance of pushing to top the West. They are reliant on the form of Diego Valeri, who produced the goods once again last time out.

LA Galaxy have not had a good season by any stretch of the imagination. They are seven points outside of the top six but there is still time to close that gap.

They come into this game without a win in their last six. Galaxy are looking to avoid losing three away games on the bounce for the first time in four years.

LA have conceded 15 goals in those last six games. If results go against them this weekend they could find themselves bottom of the Western Conference.

Portland Timbers vs LA Galaxy: Team News

Gbenga Arokoyo, Liam Ridgewell, Marco Farfan and Chance Myers are all out for Portland, while Amobi Okugo and Dairon Asprilla are both doubts.

LA Galaxy have four absentees through injury: Dave Romney, Baggio Husidic, Sebastian Lletget, and Robbie Rogers. They will also be without Jelle Van Damme and Bradley Diallo who are suspended.

Portland Timbers vs LA Galaxy: Key Points

Portland Timbers’ last five: D/D/L/W/D

LA Galaxy’s last five: L/L/L/L/D

Key Stat: Winless run – LA Galaxy are now winless in their last six outings.

Key Player: Diego Valeri – Portland’s provider. He has netted an impressive 11 goals and picked up six assists so far in 2017. He has directly contributed to 17 of Portland’s 39 regular season goals.

Portland Timbers vs LA Galaxy: Prediction

Portland Timbers 2-1 LA Galaxy – Given the current form of LA Galaxy ahead of this game a defeat at the hands of Portland looks likely. However, the heat and conditions are going to play a big part in this one. The pace of the game could well be slower than usual and both sets of players will be wary of conditions.

MLS Preview and Prediction: LA Galaxy vs Seattle Sounders

Major League Soccer: LA Galaxy vs Seattle Sounders

StubHub Center – Saturday, July 29 – 22:00 ET (03:00 BST)

Match Odds: LA Galaxy 13/10 – Draw 12/5 – Seattle 15/8

LA Galaxy vs Seattle Sounders: Preview

LA Galaxy host Seattle Sounders on Saturday night in what is surely the biggest game of the weekend. The reason? Sigi Schmid. Major League Soccer’s most successful manager is back. His job is to get the Galaxy back to the top. And his first test will be against former club Seattle.

It’s been a year and three days since Schmid was sacked by the Sounders after seven-and-a-half years of service. Now he has to inspire some confidence into his newly adopted LA Galaxy team, and fast.

The Galaxy are 9th in the West coming into the weekend. They’re not used to that end of the table and have now lost five-straight MLS games. Last week’s 4-3 defeat at New England proved to be Curt Onalfo’s final game as he has made way for Schmid.

The Galaxy know they have the squad to climb the table over the remaining weeks of the season. They are currently five points behind Vancouver Whitecaps in the final playoff slot, but have played one game more.

Seattle Sounders come into the weekend in good form after winning back-to-back home games last week against DC United and San Jose Earthquakes. They scored seven goals in those two thrilling outings and have now won three on the spin in MLS.

Their upturn in form has fired them back into the top six and back into the picture for the Western Conference lead. They trail FC Dallas by just four points coming into this one.

It was this time last season that saw Seattle start their fine run towards the MLS Cup title. They only lost two of their final 14 league games to force their way into the most unlikely of playoff spots. Another strong end to the season can’t be ruled out.

This will be the second meeting between the pair of three this season. Seattle stunned LA by winning 3-0 at StubHub back in April. That came after they won 4-2 at LA last September. They are looking to make it three-straight wins away at LA Galaxy for the first time ever.

LA Galaxy vs Seattle Sounders: Team News

LA Galaxy might roll out a 4-3-3 with Schmid now back at the helm. However, Jack McBean will serve a one-match suspension and is unavailable. Robbie Rogers, Baggio Husidic and Sebastian Lletget all remain injured. LA confirmed the DP signing of Jonathan Dos Santos on Thursday and he will likely be in line for a first MLS start here.

Seattle Sounders will be hoping Clint Dempsey and Jordan Morris are fit to start after the pair helped the USA to win the 2017 Gold Cup on Wednesday night. Nicolas Lodeiro is back after serving his suspension. A knee sprain is keeping Osvaldo Alonso on the sidelines for a few more weeks.

LA Galaxy vs Seattle Sounders: Key Points

LA Galaxy’s last five: L/L/L/L/L

Seattle Sounders’ last five: D/D/W/W/W

Key Stat: LA Galaxy have the league’s worst home form this season. They have picked up just six points from a possible 30 at StubHub.

Key Player: Romain Alessandrini – If anyone is going to carry LA out of their slump, it’s the man who’s done it more than anyone else this season already. Alessandrini has been good in his debut MLS campaign, scoring eight times and assisting eight more.

LA Galaxy vs Seattle Sounders: Prediction

LA Galaxy 2-2 Seattle Sounders – The arrival of Schmid should spark a change at the Galaxy. But it’s hard to tell if it will inspire them to an immediate improvement against a strong Sounders outfit here. With the attacking qualities that both sides possess, it’s easy to see this one being high-scoring. But ultimately, this looks like it could end all square.

MLS Preview and Prediction: LA Galaxy vs Vancouver Whitecaps

Major League Soccer: LA Galaxy vs Vancouver Whitecaps

StubHub Center – Wednesday, July 19 – 22:30 ET (03:30 BST)

Match Odds: LA Galaxy 5/6 – Draw 5/2 – Vancouver 3/1

LA Galaxy vs Vancouver Whitecaps: Preview

LA Galaxy take on Vancouver Whitecaps at StubHub Center on Wednesday night. Major League Soccer returns after a short break for the Gold Cup, although several players remain absent as they take part in the knockout rounds of the international competition.

The Galaxy were thrashed 5-2 by Manchester United in a friendly on Saturday night. They were ripped apart after making plenty of errors before scoring two late consolation goals. However, they will hope to have learnt something from that game ahead of the visit of the Whitecaps.

Head coach Curt Onalfo knows his side must pick up their form over the second half of the season if they are to make the playoffs. They come into Wednesday’s game two points behind Vancouver, who sit in sixth heading into Week 20.

That makes this a real six pointer. It’s still only July, but head-to-head clashes like this can really change the shape of the standings. LA know that need to capitalise on the home advantage to move back into the top six.

The Whitecaps might sit sixth in the West but they do boast the fourth-best points-per-game ratio. They have 24 points from 17 games and are on track for a top six finish.

Vancouver have only lost one of their last five games. That came in a 4-0 drubbing at Chicago at the start of the month, but they did bounce back by beating NYCFC 3-2 before the Gold Cup break.

The worry for Vancouver on Wednesday is that they have struggled away from home this term. They have picked up seven points from a possible 24 on the road, and haven’t won any of their last three away games in MLS.

This will be the 18th MLS clash between the two sides and the second of two this season. LA hold the advantage based on past meetings, having won nine of the previous 17. Vancouver have only won once at LA. That came in a 1-0 win at StubHub in June 2015.Embed from Getty Images

LA Galaxy vs Vancouver Whitecaps: Team News

LA Galaxy welcomed back Daniel Steres and Jermaine Jones in their 5-2 friendly defeat to Manchester United on Saturday night, so both will be in contention to start here. Robbie Rogers, Sebastian Lletget and Baggio Husidic are all still out. Curt Onalfo used 21 players in Saturday’s friendly, so he will hope fatigue is not an issue here. Gyasi Zardes is still away with the USMNT at the ongoing Gold Cup.

Vancouver Whitecaps are set to remain without Brett Levis and David Edgar, while Kendall Waston has been called up to the Costa Rican squad at the Gold Cup. Russell Teibert, Marcel De Jong and Alphonso Davies are with the Canada squad. Matias Laba will be available again after serving a suspension.

LA Galaxy vs Vancouver Whitecaps: Key Points

LA Galaxy’s last five: D/W/L/L/L
Vancouver Whitecaps’ last five: W/D/D/L/W
Key Stat: LA Galaxy haven’t won at home in MLS for more than three months. Their last win at StubHub came on April 8 against Montreal Impact. They’ve drawn three and lost three since.
Key Player: Giovani Dos Santos – The Mexican attacker has only played 12 time this season but remains crucial to the Galaxy. He has been away with Mexico at the Confederations Cup over the past month but is now ready to see his first MLS minutes for six weeks. He scored twice late on against Man Utd on Saturday and will look to prove the difference against Vancouver here.

LA Galaxy vs Vancouver Whitecaps: Prediction

LA Galaxy 1-1 Vancouver Whitecaps – Both sides might be a little rusty on Wednesday night, having not played an MLS game for two weeks. But that won’t change the fact that both sides will be out to win. There are still some key absences for both to contend with, however, and ultimately we see this one ending all square.

Ashley Cole talks up bright future for MLS as he eyes Chelsea return

Chelsea legend Ashley Cole believes Major League Soccer is heading in the right direction. The former Blue talked up the league but is looking ahead to a Chelsea return, as a coach or scout.

Cole told FourFourTwo that MLS has a promising future and he’s enjoying his stateside career. Although he admits that life is tougher as an older player.

Ashley Cole – ‘It will be a very big league’

“The league is definitely growing,” he said. “MLS is demanding. You have to travel a lot, which is the main problem for older guys.

“You’re on the plane for five to seven hours and it’s not easy. But the younger guys are learning from the marquee players. In five or six years it will be a very big league.”

Photo of Ashley Cole by Ashley Marshall – MLSGB

The 36 year old has his heart set on a Chelsea return but insists he is not finished yet: “I would like to go back to England and work for Chelsea in some capacity if I could, so that would be my first choice.

“Coaching or being a scout is something I’ve always considered and enjoyed while watching games. I try to nurture young players coming through, so it’s something I have in the back of my mind for after I finish playing. But I want to play for as long as I possibly can, because once you finish playing, you are done for life.”

Cole isn’t the only ex-Chelsea player who has talked about returning to the club. Recently departed John Terry has highlighted his ambition to one day manage the Blues. The two former England internationals could find themselves spearheading the future of the club.

If Cole is true to his word on playing for as long as he can, he could potentially lineup for Galaxy for two or more seasons. With the likes of 38 year old Andrea Pirlo – who is two years his senior – still playing in MLS.

Will Ashley Cole return to Chelsea as a coach? How much longer will he play for Galaxy?

MLS Preview and Prediction: LA Galaxy vs Real Salt Lake

Competition: Major League Soccer – LA Galaxy vs Real Salt Lake

Venue: StubHub Center – Tuesday, July 4 – 22:30 ET (03:30 BST)

Match Odds: LA Galaxy 4/5 – Draw 11/4 – RSL 3/1

LA Galaxy vs Real Salt Lake. It’s been a fixture between two of the league’s top sides battling for Western Conference superiority over the years. But not anymore.

Both sides come into Week 19 in poor form. They both need to really improve over the second half of the season to have any chance of securing a top six finish, let alone a playoff run.

The Galaxy suffered a crushing late defeat to San Jose on Saturday night. Two late goals stunned LA at Stanford Stadium, with Jelle Van Damme’s red card in the dying seconds doing little to help their chances in this one.

Curt Onalfo has a big job on his hands to get LA back to where they belong. Yes, they’ve had a lot of injuries to deal with. Yes, this was always going to be a transitional season. But LA Galaxy have high expectations and they’re not being met.

They are clinging onto a playoff spot at the midway point. But they are four points closer to the bottom of the West than the top.

One win in five MLS outings sums up the Galaxy’s problems. They were unbeaten in eight league games before a 2-1 home defeat to SKC two weeks ago. This will be their first game at StubHub since, and they have to take three points.

Real Salt Lake’s season has been even more worrying than the Galaxy’s. A change of manager hasn’t helped. Mike Petke has come in and struggled to improve results.

Their 1-0 home loss to Orlando on Friday was their fifth defeat in six in all competitions. They are bottom of the West and look to be in real trouble.

RSL are five points behind LA Galaxy in sixth coming into Tuesday night, but have played two games more than their opponents. So they don’t even have the luxury of games in hand.

Seattle proved last year that making the right roster moves in the summer can prove to be a masterstroke. But Real Salt Lake are unlikely to pull of a similar miracle. A first away win at LA in three years would be a major boost. But it looks a long shot.

Team News

LA Galaxy will be without Jelle Van Damme after the powerful defender picked up a 95th minute red card in Saturday’s California Clasico defeat. Gyasi Zardes is away with the USMNT in preparation for the Gold Cup. The Galaxy will soon be able to welcome Giovani Dos Santos back to the side, following his involvement with the Mexican national team. But he is unlikely to feature here. Robbie Rogers remains out for the season, while Sebastian Lletget and Baggio Husidic are also sidelined. Brian Rowe, Daniel Steres, Jermaine Jones and Bradley Diallo are all listed as ‘questionable’.

Real Salt Lake midfielder Sunny is suspended as a result of picking up five yellow cards. Nick Rimando is away on international duty with the USMNT. Chad Barrett, Jordan Allen and Omar Holness are all injured, while Demar Phillips and Tony Beltran are doubts.

LA Galaxy vs Real Salt Lake: Key Points

LA Galaxy’s form: D/D/W/L/L

Real Salt Lake’s form: L/L/W/L/L

Key Stat: Real Salt Lake have lost their last seven away games in a row in all competitions, conceding 25 goals in that run.

Key Player: Romain Alessandrini – The Frenchman has been the Galaxy’s best player this season. Eight goals and seven assists in 16 games shows how important he is. LA need him if they are to outgun RSL on Tuesday.

LA Galaxy 2-1 Real Salt Lake – Neither side can come into the game with any real confidence but the Galaxy are in a better position than RSL, even with a couple of key absentees for the game. Real Salt Lake are in poor form. They can’t stop losing away. And that’s unlikely to change here. Home win.

MLS Preview and Prediction: San Jose Earthquakes vs LA Galaxy

Competition: Major League Soccer – San Jose Earthquakes vs. LA Galaxy
Venue: Stanford Stadium – Saturday, July 1 – 22:30 ET (03:30 BST)
Match Odds: SJ Earthquakes 5/6 – Draw 12/5 – LA Galaxy 3/1

Match Preview

San Jose Earthquakes do battle with local rivals LA Galaxy at Stanford Stadium for the second Californian Clasico of the season on Saturday night, with the two rivals separated by just a point coming into Week 18.

San Jose are one point ahead of LA, having played one game more, and know they need to get revenge for their 4-2 home defeat to their West-coast rivals just over a month ago.

The Earthquakes are now preparing for their first MLS game since sacking Dominic Kinnear earlier this week in a move that took many people by surprise, particularly off the back of last Saturday’s 2-1 win over RSL.

The Quakes advanced past Seattle 2-1 on Wednesday night in the US Open Cup in Chris Leitch’s first outing as head coach. But he knows that Saturday’s Clasico will offer a much tougher test. The home fans will expect a win, but they’ve only managed one in their last seven clashes against the Galaxy.

The visitors arrive having eased past Sacramento Republic in Wednesday’s Open Cup clash, but they will still feel disappointed at losing their first MLS outing in nine last weekend, as Sporting KC emerged victorious from StubHub Center last Saturday.

Curt Onalfo has got his side looking more solid than they did through the first six weeks of the season but they still have a big job at hand if they are to seal a place in the playoffs, let alone challenge for a sixth MLS Cup title.

The boost for LA is that they’ve already beaten San Jose this season in that 4-2 win a few weeks back. That was one of the Galaxy’s four away wins from their last five road games, with the only other result in that stretch a 0-0 draw at DC United, so they should arrive at Stanford Stadium in high spirits.

Team News

San Jose will be without Nick Lima after he was sent off in last weekend’s clash with Real Salt Lake. The Quakes also have six players sidelined through injury, with Quincy Amarikwa, Marvell Wynne, Marc Pelosi, Harold Cummings, Florian Jungwirth and Fatai Alashe all out.

LA Galaxy are definitely without four players as Robbie Rogers, Sebastian Lletget, Baggio Husidic and Brian Rowe are injured, while doubts are hanging over Daniel Steres, Jermaine Jones, Raul Mendiola and Bradley Diallo. Gyasi Zardes won’t be available as he is part of the USA’s Gold Cup squad that play Ghana on Saturday. Giovani Dos Santos will also miss out as a result of his participation at the Confederations Cup with Mexico.

Key Points

SJ Earthquakes’ form: W/L/L/D/W

LA Galaxy’s form: W/D/D/W/L

Key Stat: San Jose Earthquakes have only lost one of their last 11 home games in MLS, but that was to LA Galaxy back in May.

Key Player: Chris Wondolowski – The San Jose veteran knows what it takes to win a Californian Clasico, given the fact this will be his 17th derby clash against LA. He has scored five in his last seven games against the Galaxy and will look to hurt them again here.

Embed from Getty Images

Score Prediction

SJ Earthquakes 1-1 LA Galaxy – It’s tough to separate the rivals coming into this weekend’s clash. Both had midweek cup successes and that might take its toll on a few members of each squad but a game of this magnitude requires full concentration from start to finish. Both will expect to score but ultimately, we see this one ending all square.

MLS Preview and Prediction: LA Galaxy vs Sporting Kansas City

Competition: Major League Soccer – LA Galaxy vs. Sporting Kansas City
Venue: StubHub Center – Saturday, June 24 – 22:30 ET (03:30 BST)
Match Odds: LA Galaxy 29/20 – Draw  11/5 – Sporting Kansas City 9/5

Match Preview

Another weekend comes around and once again there are big games in Major League Soccer as Sporting Kansas City travel to the West coast in search of three points against LA Galaxy.

Unbeaten in eight MLS games, the Galaxy look in great form and seem to be restoring the type of form which has long been associated with the league’s most successful franchise. However, an early-season slump has put a dampener on the current buzz in LA as they sit five points of leaders Sporting KC in the West.

Embed from Getty Images

Injuries haven’t helped the Californians as key players such as Robbie Rogers and Jermaine Jones are currently sidelined for extended periods. Their squad depth has of course been needed due to these injuries and current form pays tribute to this.

The Galaxy will be delighted with their 3-1 win at Colorado on Wednesday night, with Jack McBean scoring twice before a Romain Alessandrini penalty sealed three points on the road ahead of Saturday’s clash.

Sporting Kansas City have had a full week to prepare for this game but have only one win in five, so the favourite tag for this clash is possibly undeserved.

Embed from Getty Images

They have struggled on their travels over the past couple of months, failing to win any of their last six away games in MLS. They had to settled for a 0-0 draw at San Jose last week but will be pleased to have finally kept an away clean sheet for the first time since April.

SKC have not enjoyed visiting LA over the years, as their last win away to the Galaxy came in June of 2004. Breaking that record before it gets even more embarrassing is the aim here for Peter Vermes’ side, especially if they want to re-affirm their status as the West’s side to beat this season.

Team News

LA Galaxy are without several key players for the visit of SKC. Robbie Rogers, Sebastien Lletget, Baggio Husidic, Daniel Steres, Brian Rowe and Jermaine Jones are all unavailable through injury. Bradley Diallo is listed as questionable and Raul Mendiola is a doubt. Giovani Dos Santos is away with Mexico at the Confederations Cup but Jack McBean will surely lead the attack again after his brace at Colorado on Wednesday.

Sporting Kansas City have only one doubt as Eric Palmer-Brown is listed as questionable with a thigh injury.

Key Points

LA Galaxy’s last five: W/W/W/D/D

Sporting Kansas City’s last five: L/L/W/D/D

Key Stat: Sporting Kansas City have only scored in one of their last six league matches.

Key Player: Romain Alessandrini – The Frenchman has already asserted himself as a massive addition to a rebuilt Galaxy team. The wide-man provides creativity and an eye for goal which could prove the difference once again here.

Score Prediction

LA Galaxy 1-1 Sporting Kansas City – It’s a tough one to call considering league positions and form, but with LA having so many injuries and Sporting Kansas City returning to normality after the international break, SKC look more likely to win. However, we’re going to play it safe and predict a score draw.
