MLS All-Stars vs Juventus: Preview

The best in MLS will take on Italy’s finest club side in the 2018 MLS All-Star Game in Atlanta on Wednesday. This will be the 23rd annual All-Star game and could break the attendance record with a full house expected at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The current All-Star attendance record is 70,728, set back in 2010 when fans packed into Houston’s Reliant Stadium to watch the MLS All-Stars take on Manchester United.

The MLS All-Stars are looking to win the game for the first time in three years after losing on penalties to Real Madrid this time last year. Prior to that, they fell 2-1 to Arsenal. The All-Stars last won the game in 2015, beating Spurs 2-1 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

This year’s All-Star team is stacked with attacking talent, even after Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Villa have had to pull out. The likes of Atlanta’s own Josef Martinez, Miguel Almiron and Ezequiel Barco will look to link up with fellow attackers Carlos Vela, Bradley Wright-Phillips and former Juventus star Sebastian Giovinco.

Head coach Tata Martino will set his side up to attack Juventus – a team renowned for their defensive prowess The Bianconeri have added a monumental attacking threat of their own this summer in Cristiano Ronaldo but the 33-year-old will not be ready to make his debut on Wednesday.

Juve are busy preparing for the 2018/19 Serie A season as they will look to retain their league title for the eighth successive year. They are also the reigning Coppa Italia champions and only the second Serie A side to ever take on the All-Stars, following AS Roma in 2013 – a game the All-Stars lost 3-1.

This will be the third of four Juventus preseason games in the United States. They have played two of their three International Champions Cup matches, beating Bayern Munich 2-0 before drawing 1-1 with Benfica, a game they won 4-2 on penalties. They will round off their ICC games when they face Real Madrid on Saturday but all focus is on the All-Star game ahead of that.

Ibrahimovic pulled out of the All-Star game on Sunday night after scoring his first hat-trick for LA Galaxy. That was as a result of playing three matches in a week. David Villa also misses out with injury. Minnesota United’s Darwin Quintero and New York Red Bulls’ Tyler Adams are the replacements.

MLS All-Stars vs Juventus: Key Stats

MLS All-Stars’ last five: L/L/W/L/D

Juventus’ preseason form: W/D

Key stat: Both sides have scored in each of the past six MLS All-Star games. There have been 29 goals scored in the past eight editions of the match – an average of 3.6 per game.

MLS All-Stars vs Juventus: Prediction

MLS All-Stars 3-2 Juventus: This has all the makings of being a spectacle. The All-Stars have an abundance of attacking talent and will have to set up to attack the Italian giants. However, that could lead to an open game and Juventus have more than enough weapons themselves to unleash. Either way, this should be full of goals and we think the All-Stars have enough to edge it. Don’t be surprised to see former Juve man Giovinco score the decisive goal…

Lodeiro inspires Sounders to beat Whitecaps as another late-summer playoff surge looms

Throughout their MLS history, the Seattle Sounders have made a trend of struggling in the early stages of the season before finding their stride in the Summer, much like they did in 2016 en route to winning MLS Cup. That Summer, Nico Lodeiro joined the club and, under then interim coach Brian Schmetzer, helped lead Seattle into playoff positions and ultimately was named the 2016 MLS Newcomer of the Year.

Fast forward two years later and the Sounders again find themselves in a hole, trying to continue their streak of making the playoffs every year of their MLS existence.

This time the hole is much deeper and the club has been devastated by injury all year but for possibly the first time this season the lofty expectations seem to be within reach.

The Sounders knocked off their Cascadia Cup rivals Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0 on Saturday thanks to a brace from Lodiero and a confident performance from his teammates. Most excitingly we finally got a chance to see Raul Ruidiaz take the field in Rave Green and while it’s apparent that he is still learning how to play with his teammates he already looks dangerous in front of goal.

Ruidiaz’s debut would have been the biggest talking point this week if not for Lodeiro upstaging him with a masterful performance in midfield. Lodeiro’s passing was precise and incisive, constantly splitting defenders and finding open teammates. After opening the scoring from the penalty spot in the 4th minute of the match, Lodeiro doubled the lead in the 31st with a knuckling ball that completely fooled the Whitecaps’ keeper Stefan Marinovic. With the two-goal lead, Lodeiro seemed to really get into a groove and spent much of the second half terrorising defenders with his ball control and forcing Vancouver to foul him a match-high seven times.

With more time together Lodiero and Ruidiaz have the potential to unlock the Sounders attack as they learn each other’s habits and tendencies. Ruidiaz’s pace will help to stretch opposing defenses and open space for other attackers and should Lodiero continue his form from Saturday he’ll be an integral part of maximizing the danger that Ruidiaz creates.

As Seattle now prepares to head to Avaya Stadium in San Jose to face the cellar dwelling Earthquakes, they’ll also be looking to build upon only their third shutout of the season and first in a winning effort. Now just 10 points out of the playoffs and with games in hand, the Sounders will be desperate to get their first win at Avaya and continue their climb from the bottom of the Western Conference.

New York City FC vs Orlando City | 2018 MLS Preview and Prediction

Major League Soccer: New York City FC vs Orlando City

Yankee Stadium – Saturday, June 2nd 2018 – 19:30 ET (00:30 BST)

New York City FC vs Orlando City: Preview

Saturday evening sees New York City FC welcome Orlando City to Yankee Stadium. Both the Eastern Conference sides are in an inconsistent run of form.

Patrick Vieira’s NYCFC come into this one having won just two of their last five games. As a result of their recent run they have lost a little ground in the race at the top of the East. Although they are sitting third, they are just two points behind the leaders.

Form at Yankee Stadium paints a completely different picture for New York City FC. They have won all five of their home fixtures and will be looking at this game as a winnable one.

Orlando City have lost three games on the bounce. They are in danger of slipping out of the top six and considering their form earlier in the season it will be disappointing for all involved.

Jason Kreis’ side saw their inability to find the back of the net when they are on top cost them last time out. They lost 2-1 for the third game in a row, this time at the hands of Chicago. In stark contrast, some clinical finishing was enough for Chicago to inflict that defeat on Orlando.

The Lions are hoping for the return of Dom Dwyer, they have not been the same side without him. The striker has six goals in the seven games he has played – so it’s no surprise they have missed his input.

New York City FC vs Orlando City: Prediction

New York City FC 3-1 Orlando City: Despite Orlando being in a difficult run of form there is encouragement for them as they are still finding the back of the net. NYCFC’s Yankee Stadium form and superior league position makes it difficult to see anything but a home win. No game is a given, but Orlando have work to do if they are to bring that 100% home record to a stop.

Portland Timbers vs LA Galaxy: Preview

Portland Timbers welcome LA Galaxy to Providence Park on Saturday evening, looking to extend their impressive run to seven consecutive MLS wins. LA Galaxy arrive with some key absentees are and are up against it as they try and bounce back from their midweek loss to FC Dallas.

The Timbers are the league’s hottest team right now. Portland have won six-straight games – four of which have come at home – and have climbed to fourth in the Western Conference, five points behind leaders SKC with two games in hand.

Portland’s players have clearly now taken on Giovanni Savarese’s philosophies and they are paying dividends. They come into this one off the back of last weekend’s 3-2 win at Colorado Rapids, with Swedish striker Samuel Armenteros netting a brace.

LA Galaxy will be looking to their own Swedish striker to try and guide them to victory here. Zlatan Ibrahimovic returned from suspension by scoring twice in Wednesday night’s home clash with FC Dallas. However, those goals weren’t enough as LA fell 3-2.

The Galaxy have now lost five of their last seven games and sit eighth in the West heading into the weekend. Sigi Schmid’s men have more than enough quality to be performing better than they are. They just need to start putting a few good results together. Winning at Portland on Saturday would go a long way to helping.

This will be their second meeting of the season after the Galaxy beat the Timbers 2-1 on the opening weekend in Giovanni Savarese’s first MLS game as a head coach. However, Portland did win the only league clash at Providence Park last term, winning 3-1.

Portland Timbers’ MLS form: W/W/W/W/W

LA Galaxy’s MLS form: L/L/W/W/L

Key stat: Portland have won 10 of their last 11 MLS games at Providence Park, outscoring their opponents 26-8 in that time.

Portland Timbers vs LA Galaxy: Prediction

Portland Timbers 2-1 LA Galaxy: Both teams have plenty of attacking threats, even with key international absences. Portland are on an incredible run and don’t look set to drop their form here. The Galaxy had a tough time midweek and need to try and shake off the disappointment quickly. However, it’s hard to see them stopping the Timbers, who should make it seven wins on the bounce.

Sporting Kansas City vs Columbus Crew | 2018 MLS Preview and Prediction

Major League Soccer: Sporting Kansas City vs Columbus Crew

Children’s Mercy Park – Sunday, May 27th 2018 – 18:00 ET (23:00 BST)

Sporting Kansas City vs Columbus Crew: Preview

Sporting Kansas City welcome Columbus Crew to Children’s Mercy Park in Sunday’s lone MLS fixture. They are both in great form and so both will be looking to mark their superiority with another three points here.

The hosts come into the weekend at the top of the Western Conference. They will stay their regardless of results this weekend but will be hoping to add another three points to their tally of 24 points from 12 games.

Peter Vermes’ men have lost just one of their last 11 games and are unbeaten in three coming into Sunday’s contest. They are a really tough outfit to break down at home and so the Crew have their work cut out if they are to take points back to Columbus.

However, the visitors couldn’t arrive in much better confidence. They have rolled off three-straight wins and sit just one point behind Atlanta United at the top of the East heading into the weekend’s fixtures.

The Crew haven’t conceded a goal in any of their last four games and are currently unbeaten in six. They will be looking to frustrate SKC on Sunday, before hitting them on the break whenever possible. New York City FC executed that strategy to perfection on the opening weekend and remain the only side to have won in Kansas City this season.

The worry for Columbus is that they have now managed to take anything away from Sporting KC since 2012. They’ve lost each of their last four MLS games at SKC, conceding 11 goals in the process. Their lone meeting last season ended in a 1-1 draw at MAPFRE Stadium.

Sporting Kansas City vs Columbus Crew: Team News

Sporting KC

❌ Suspensions: None.

❓ Doubts: Jimmy Medranda (undisclosed injury).

🚑 Out: Felipe Gutierrez (sports hernia surgery), Colton Storm (ankle sprain).

Columbus Crew

❌ Suspensions: None.

❓ Doubts: None.

🚑 Out: Pedro Santos (right thigh injury).

Sporting Kansas City vs Columbus Crew: Key Stats

Sporting KC’s MLS form: W/L/W/W/D

Columbus Crew’s MLS form: W/D/W/W/W

Key stat: There has never been a 0-0 draw between these sides in 20 years of clashes. Their last five meetings have had an average of 3.8 goals per game.

Sporting Kansas City vs Columbus Crew: Prediction

Sporting Kansas City 1-1 Columbus Crew: This is a really tricky one to call. Sporting Kansas City are in good form and are a real force at home. They sit top of the West for a reason and will be relishing the challenge of an in-form Crew side. But the form Columbus are in means it’s hard to see them losing. They have been solid defensively and should create problems for Sporting KC here. Score draw.

New York Red Bulls vs Philadelphia Union: Preview

Saturday evening sees New York Red Bulls welcome Philadelphia Union to Red Bull Arena. The Eastern Conference rivals are separated by seven points ahead of the tie.

It’s been a very good run of form for the home side. They have won four on the bounce, coming into the game off the back of their 3-1 away win against Atlanta.

That win last time out was made all the more impressive as Jesse Marsch’s side came back from 1-0 to take all three points back to New York. More of the same will be expected from the Red Bulls faithful here.

Philadelphia Union have bounced back. They have won their last two after losing two on the bounce and now is the time for them to find some consistency.

A 4-1 win last time out against RSL was exactly the kind of performance the Union needed to produce having previously won 2-0 against Montreal.

If history is anything to go by, Philadelphia fans can expect a difficult game with a slim chance of taking anything away with them – managing just one win in the all-time series on the road.

New York Red Bulls’ MLS form: L/W/W/W/W

Philadelphia Union’s MLS form: W/L/L/W/W

Key stat: Philadelphia Union have won just once away at New York Red Bulls in the all-time series.

New York Red Bulls vs Philadelphia Union: Prediction

New York Red Bulls 2-1 Philadelphia Union: Despite winning three of their last five, Philadelphia Union have struggled to make much of an impact away against New York Red Bulls. Jesse Marsch will be expecting his side to continue their winning streak but will be more than aware of the threat the Union pose.

Seattle Sounders vs Real Salt Lake | 2018 MLS Preview and Prediction

Major League Soccer: Seattle Sounders vs Real Salt Lake

CenturyLink Field – Saturday, May 26th 2018 – 17:00 ET (22:00 BST)

UK TV Coverage – Live on Sky Sports Football

Seattle Sounders vs Real Salt Lake: Preview

Seattle Sounders take on Real Salt Lake on Saturday evening in a clash between two Western Conference rivals desperate to turn their form around. The two sides have lost 11 games combined already this season and need to improve. They will meet again next weekend at Rio Tinto Stadium so this is a big two weeks for both sides.

Seattle have only played nine games, fewer than anyone else in the West. But they have only managed to pick up eight points (2-5-2). They had mixed results in last week’s double gameweek, winning 2-1 at Toronto FC before losing 1-0 to a late goal at fierce rivals Portland Timbers.

The Sounders have a whole host of injuries to deal with and so Brian Schmetzer is having a tough job in getting men on the field. They will be glad to be returning home this weekend though, as they are unbeaten at home to Real Salt Lake in over six years.

RSL are not playing to the level many thought they would this season. Yes, it’s still early enough for them to turn it around, but they have lost three of their last four games. To make matters worse, they’ve conceded 11 goals in their past four games so defensively they are a mess at the moment.

Mike Petke has watched his side lose five-straight away games. They took a point on opening weekend at FC Dallas but that remains their only road point from their past seven MLS games away from Rio Tinto.

The two sides met twice last season, with both sides taking a home victory each. The Sounders won 1-0 at CenturyLink last May in similarly bad form to that they are in now. But their win over RSL last May saw them turn things around as they only lost two of their next 18 matches after that win. And it was actually Real Salt Lake who ended the 13-game Sounders unbeaten run in September.

Seattle Sounders vs Real Salt Lake: Team News

Seattle Sounders

❌ Suspensions: None.

❓ Doubts: Nicolas Lodeiro (toe fracture).

🚑 Out: Jordan Morris (torn ACL), Victor Rodriguez (right knee arthroscopy), Roman Torres (right hamstring strain), Osvaldo Alonso (left quad strain), Will Bruin (left heel pain).

Real Salt Lake

❌ Suspensions: None.

❓ Doubts: Joao Plata (quad injury).

🚑 Out: Tony Beltran (right knee surgery), Jordan Allen (knee injury), Alex Horwath (Achilles surgery), Shawn Barry (knee), Demar Phillips (ankle injury).

Seattle Sounders vs Real Salt Lake: Key Stats

Seattle Sounders’ MLS form: W/L/D/W/L

Real Salt Lake’s MLS form: W/L/L/W/L

Key stat: The home side has been victorious in this fixture in the past 13 MLS meetings. The last time the away side took a point from this fixture was 2012.

Seattle Sounders vs Real Salt Lake: Prediction

Seattle Sounders 2-1 Real Salt Lake: Both sides have problems to deal with and poor defensive records to try and fix. That should lead to both sides finding the net but the trend of the home side winning this fixture could well continue. Real Salt Lake’s shocking away form is a major concern so it’s hard to look past the Sounders just edging this one.

New York Red Bulls vs New York City FC: Preview

New York Red Bulls take on New York City FC in the first NY Derby of the 2018 season on Saturday afternoon. Both sides have young, attacking squads and so this one shouldn’t disappoint.

The Red Bulls come into the derby off the back of last weekend’s 3-2 win at LA Galaxy. That was their first away win of the season and they now return home looking to make up for last season’s series loss against their fierce rivals.

After winning the first four derby clashes, it looked as though the Red Bulls were set to dominate NYCFC. But since then, New York City FC have won three of the last five MLS battles, including two last season in which they went unbeaten against RBNY.

NYCFC come into Week 10 at the top of the Supporters’ Shield. They bounced back from their away loss at Portland to beat FC Dallas 3-1 last time out and restore confidence heading into the New York Derby.

David Villa scored his 400th and 401st career goals in that win over Dallas. However he has yet to score a goal at Red Bull Arena in six previous attempts.

Their latest clash ended in the first ever draw between the two rivals, and Saturday’s game is expected to be a close-run contest again, with both these sides looking set to challenge high up the East this season.

❌ Suspensions: None.

❓ Doubts: Connor Lade (ankle sprain).

New York Red Bulls’ MLS form: W/L/W/L/W

New York City FC’s MLS form: W/W/D/L/W

Key stat: Expect goals – There have been 32 goals in the nine previous MLS clashes between these two – an average of 3.5 per game.

New York Red Bulls vs New York City FC: Prediction

New York Red Bulls 2-2 New York City FC: This one is really tough to call. NYCFC got blown away on their last road trip to Portland but that doesn’t usually happen and they will be well up for the trip to Red Bull Arena. The hosts are looking for revenge after failing to win any of the three games last season. If this is an open contest, there should be goals but expect the two sides to cancel each other out. Score draw.

Colorado Rapids vs Orlando City | 2018 MLS Preview and Prediction

Major League Soccer: Colorado Rapids vs Orlando City

Dick’s Sporting Goods Park – Sunday, April 29 2018 – 16:00 ET (21:00 BST)

Colorado Rapids vs Orlando City: Preview

Sunday afternoon sees Colorado Rapids welcome Orlando City to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The Rapids sit 8th in the Western Conference, while Orlando are 3rd in the East.

Last weekend was Colorado’s first loss since Week 1. They can feel hard done by not to see performances reflect a higher position in the standings – having won two, drawn two and lost two.

This is going to be a test for Anthony Hudson’s side, who are welcoming an Orlando outfit in good form. They are going to be without their ‘keeper, Tim Howard, who saw red for handling the ball outside of the area.

Orlando have won four games on the bounce. That is most certainly playoff form and they are hoping the good run can continue here.

It is not going to straightforward though and they must iron out some defensive frailties. Their 3-2 win over San Jose last weekend should have been far more comfortable. At 3-0 up the game was out of sight but weak defending from crossing made for a cagey ending to that one.

The only previous meeting between the two in Colorado ended 0-0, while the Lions are yet to lose against the Rapids. That by no means implies an away is guaranteed, which Orlando will be all too aware of.

Colorado Rapids vs Orlando City: Team News

Colorado Rapids

❌ Suspensions: Tim Howard.

❓ Doubts: Danny Wilson (undisclosed).

🚑 Out: Kortne Ford (knee) and Marlon Hairston (knee).

Orlando City

❌ Suspensions: None.

❓ Doubts: RJ Allen (hamstring).

Colorado Rapids vs Orlando City: Key Stats

Colorado Rapids’ MLS form: D/W/D/W/L

Orlando City’s MLS form: L/W/W/W/W

Key stat: Orlando City are one win away from equalling the longest win streak (five) since their inception to MLS.

Colorado Rapids vs Orlando City: Prediction

Colorado Rapids 2-2 Orlando City: Given Rapids recent form it’s difficult to see them losing this one, despite missing Howard and having lost last time out. Orlando’s winning run adds pressure to both sides – it is going to be an interesting tie which has the potential for goals. Score draw.

LAFC vs Seattle Sounders | 2018 MLS Preview and Prediction

Major League Soccer: Los Angeles FC vs Seattle Sounders

Banc of California Stadium – Sunday, April 29 2018 – 21:00 ET (02:00 BST)

LAFC vs Seattle Sounders: Preview

Los Angeles FC are finally set for their first ever home game in Major League Soccer. The expansion side welcome Seattle Sounders to Banc of California Stadium on Sunday night for the first ever game in the brand new stadium.

LAFC have opened the 2018 season with six-straight road games. Their return of four wins from those games is mighty impressive but now they have to try and instantly settle into their new home as they play in front of their own fans for the first time.

They opened their season against Sunday’s opponents, picking up a historic victory as Diego Rossi struck the only goal in a 1-0 win at CenturyLink Field on opening weekend. Another win here would keep LAFC in second place in the West after a fine start to life in MLS.

The Seattle Sounders took five games but they finally have their first win of the season. They beat Minnesota United 3-1 last Sunday and will be hoping to get revenge over LAFC after that opening day loss in which former Sounder Tyler Miller made an incredible seven saves.

Seattle are still rooted to the bottom of the West as we enter Week 9 but they have played just five games – the fewest in the conference – so have plenty of time to turn things around. Brian Schmetzer does have big decisions to make however, after starting both Clint Dempsey and Magnus Wolff Eikrem on the bench last weekend.

❌ Suspensions: None.

❓ Doubts: Joao Moutinho (left quad strain).

🚑 Out: Luis Lopez (right tibial stress fracture).

LAFC vs Seattle Sounders: Key Stats

LAFC’s MLS form: W/L/L/W/W

Seattle Sounders’ MLS form: L/L/L/D/W

Key stat: Seattle Sounders have still yet to keep a clean sheet this season, despite being joint-leaders in clean sheets in 2017.

LAFC vs Seattle Sounders: Prediction

Los Angeles FC 3-1 Seattle Sounders: This one should be special. An incredible atmosphere is expected inside the brand new Banc of California Stadium on Sunday night as LAFC make their home debut. They have shown how dangerous they are in and around the box and should put on a show for their fans. Seattle Sounders got up and running last weekend but ultimately don’t look to be in a position to ruin the party here. Home win.
