MLS Playoff Preview and Prediction: New York Red Bulls vs Columbus Crew

Competition: MLS Cup Playoffs (Eastern Conference Final Second Leg) – New York Red Bulls vs. Columbus Crew

Venue: Red Bull Arena – Sunday, November 29 – 19:30 ET (00:30 GMT – Monday, November 30)

Match Odds:  New York Red Bulls 4/6 – Draw 3/1 – Columbus Crew 15/4

Match Preview

New York Red Bulls and Columbus Crew clash at the Red Bull Arena for the crucial second leg of their MLS Cup playoff Eastern Conference final tie.

The Crew made the most of their home advantage in the first leg, securing a 2-0 win thanks to Justin Meram who scored the fastest goal in MLS Cup playoff history after just nine seconds of the game, before top goalscorer Kei Kamara added a vital second late on.

The New York Red Bulls will be disappointed with their performance in the first leg and know full well they’ve left themselves a monumental task to try and reach the MLS Cup final.

Jesse Marsch has to rally his men and draw upon their good form coming into the postseason – the defeat to Columbus ended a run of four straight victories and was only their second loss in eight games.

New York have been almost impeccable on home soil in the last few months, winning ten of their last 11 games at Red Bull Arena – in order to go through, they need to win either 2-0 or by a three goal margin should Columbus score, given the away goals rule.

Columbus Crew will be ecstatic after a quite simply magnificent performance in the first leg and they’ve given themselves an excellent chance of going all the way.

They came into this contest as underdogs, so it will be interesting to see how they cope with the pressure of knowing they’re now in a great position and are most definitely favourites to reach the final.

Gregg Berhalter’s side have only lost by two goals or more on one occasion in their last 14 games, so they will be confident of finishing the job on Sunday night.

The Red Bulls can’t really afford to let Columbus score if they are to have a realistic chance of progressing, as one goal for the Crew would leave them needing to score four in reply.

With an MLS Cup final spot at stake, one thing we can guarantee is that it promises to be another night of entertainment, excitement and drama – it’s certainly not one to miss.

Team News

New York Red Bulls will be without defensive duo Chris Duvall (broken leg) and Damien Perrinelle (knee). Ronald Zubar will partner Matt Miazga at the centre of the defence and they will need to be fully focused and organised to ensure they avoid any silly mistakes. Miazga, Zubar, Wright-Phillips and Sacha Kljestan are all one yellow card away from missing the final should they qualify.

Columbus Crew will continue to be without midfielder Kristinn Steindorsson who is recovering from a knee injury. Harrison Afful and Tyson Wahl will be keen to avoid cautions, as one more would see them miss the final if they were to make it.

Key Points

New York Red Bulls’ last five: W/W/W/W/L

Columbus Crew’s last five: W/W/L/W/W

Key Stat: No side has ever overcome a two goal deficit from a conference final first leg to reach the MLS Cup final.

Key Player: Bradley Wright-Phillips – The English striker was isolated for large periods of the first leg in Columbus and the Red Bulls need to bring him into the game more frequently this time around to stand a chance of recovering the tie.

Score Prediction

New York Red Bulls 2-1 Columbus Crew – The New York Red Bulls have left themselves with a mountain to climb but they’ll certainly give their all to turn it round. They will run Columbus close but having to come out and attack may leave the door open for the Crew to expose their defensive frailties. A narrow Red Bulls win could be on the cards, but it may not be enough to see them make the final.

MLS Playoff Preview and Prediction: Columbus Crew vs New York Red Bulls

Competition: MLS Cup Playoffs (Eastern Conference Final First Leg) – Columbus Crew vs. New York Red Bulls

Venue: MAPFRE Stadium – Sunday, November 22 – 17:00 ET (22:00 GMT)

Match Odds: Columbus Crew 5/4 – Draw 12/5 – New York Red Bulls 21/20

Match Preview

Columbus Crew welcome New York Red Bulls to MAPFRE Stadium for the first leg of their Eastern Conference Final clash, with one of these sides just two games away from the 2015 MLS Cup Final.

This is a huge fixture for Crew as they can get a real feeling as to whether or not they will advance into the final if they can outplay the Red Bulls on home soil.

In the last five meetings between the sides where Columbus have been at home they’ve been extremely hard to split. Both sides have won two and the other game a draw in that time so it’s almost impossible to call which way this first leg will go.

Columbus were taken to extra time by Montreal Impact in the last round and have Kei Kamara to thank for them getting them to this match. They cannot afford to give the Red Bulls chances otherwise they will more than likely be punished and keeping a clean sheet in the home leg will be one of the priorities for Columbus on Sunday.

New York Red Bulls will be feeling confident heading into this tie. They have been in fantastic form but still have a lot of work to do if they are to complete a Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup double.

We can expect a similar performance to that of the first leg of the semifinals against DC United, where New York were happy to sit and wait for chances to arise on the counter.

Jesse Marsch will be looking for his side to get an away goal. As we know, losing the first leg with the consolation of an away goal keeps the second leg interesting and the Red Bulls’ approach to the game will be interesting to see.

As previously mentioned, the Red Bulls travel well away to Columbus and they have only failed to score once in their last five visits.

Team News

Columbus Crew could be without up to three players as Kristinn Steindorsson and Mohammed Saeid are out, while Tony Tchani is a doubt. The Crew will need their top players to be on song here. Kei Kamara, Ethan Finlay and Federico Higuain have 46 goals between them this season and they need to continue to provide in this one.

New York Red Bulls are expected to be without Chris Duvall, Anatole Abang and Damien Perrinelle. Bradley Wright-Phillips and Lloyd Sam have 28 goals combined this season and their performances have been key to NYRB success. Luis Robles was awarded the Allstate goalkeeper of the season and it comes as no real surprise, he is a vital last line of defence for the Red Bulls.

Key Points

Columbus Crews’ last five: L/W/W/L/W

New York Red Bulls’ last five: L/W/W/W/W

Key Stat: Columbus have scored at least two goals in eight of their last ten Major League Soccer outings. You feel they will need to score at least two in the first leg and make use of their home advantage to have to best chance of progressing.

Key Player: Kei Kamara – The Crew look a completely different side when he is playing at his best and his brace against Montreal Impact in the last round saw them progress to this stage. They will need him at his best here.

Score Prediction

Columbus Crew 2-1 New York Red Bulls – Crew to make home advantage count but still concede to a Red Bulls side who are very hard to stop. This will leave it perfectly poised for the second decisive leg to see who can make it to the MLS Cup Final.

MLS Playoff Preview and Prediction: FC Dallas vs Seattle Sounders

Competition: MLS Playoffs (Western Conference Semifinal Second Leg) – FC Dallas vs. Seattle Sounders

Venue: Toyota Stadium – Sunday, November 8 – 19:30 ET (00:30 GMT)

Match Odds: FC Dallas 10/11 – Draw 5/2 – Seattle Sounders 3/1

Match Preview

FC Dallas face Seattle Sounders on Sunday evening in the crucial second leg of their Western Conference MLS Playoff Semifinal.

The first leg ended with Dallas losing 2-1 late on after Clint Dempsey’s wonder-goal earned the Sounders a vital win. This tie is far from over though and Dallas will be aware of that.

FC Dallas boast brilliant home form, winning nine of their last ten, and they have the ability to turn this around. But recent form against Seattle would suggest this is going to be a tough task, having only won one of their last five against Sunday’s opponents.

Dallas have scored 24 goals in their last ten games, so are in great form in front of goal and there are plenty of positives despite being behind on aggregate. Dallas didn’t finish top of the Western Conference by chance.

Seattle Sounders vs FC Dallas

Seattle Sounders have done half the job, but this a bigger challenge than the one they faced last week.

Dempsey’s late winner was a huge moment for them in the tie, but conceding the Dallas away goal was a real blow and could prove to be their undoing.

Sounders need to approach this positively and not be overly cautious. If Dallas sense any nerves it could be an evening of disappointment for the away side.

Seattle haven’t lost to Dallas this season (W2 D1) with the only meeting between the sides at Toyota Stadium ending 0-0, so Seattle know they have a great chance of progressing but will have to be at their best.

Seattle Sounders vs Portland Timbers

Team News

FC Dallas have three injury concerns. Rolando Escobar is out, while Bakary Soumare and Kellyn Acosta are doubts.

Seattle Sounders have seven injury concerns as Roman Torres, Andres Correa and Andy Craven are out. Osvaldo Alonso, Brad Evans, Leonardo Gonzalez and Marco Pappa are all doubts.

Key Points

FC Dallas’ form: D/W/W/W/L

Seattle Sounders’ form: D/D/W/W/W

Key Stat: Fortress – FC Dallas have won nine of their last ten home matches in Major League Soccer.

Key Player: Fabian Castillo – The Dallas star netted his side’s only goal in the first leg and FCD will need him to be at his best if they are to progress. His pace can cause any side problems and he could be the real star on Sunday.

Seattle Sounders vs FC Dallas Fabian Castillo

Score Prediction

FC Dallas 3-1 Seattle Sounders – Dallas to turn the tie around and advance. You have to feel their crucial away goal will prove to be the difference in this one. If they are to score early on, the Sounders have to push, which will inevitably leave gaps in their defence. This one will be well worth the watch as goals look inevitable.

Red Bulls Revolution: The Kljestan Effect

As the New York Red Bulls look to build on their Supporters’ Shield win by claiming a first ever MLS Cup title, Louis East looks at how Sacha Kljestan has inspired his team to glory in his first year back in MLS.

When Sacha Kljestan landed back on U.S. soil following his switch to the New York Red Bulls from Belgian giants Anderlecht in January, few predicted he would outshine the likes of Frank Lampard, Jermaine Jones and Michael Bradley as one of Major League Soccer’s outstanding central midfielders in 2015.

But after scoring eight goals and picking up 14 assists (fourth most in MLS in 2015), Kljestan has proved to be one of the league’s most dynamic midfield assets and his performances have helped the Red Bulls enjoy plenty of success this year.

When head coach Jesse Marsch joined the Red Bulls in early January, rumours immediately began pouring out of New York that Kljestan was a key transfer target, following a turbulent offseason that saw Designated Player’s Thierry Henry and Tim Cahill leave the club.

Marsch, who enjoyed four seasons playing alongside Kljestan at Chivas from 2006 to 2009, clearly knew that the powerful midfielder strengths and decided he would help transform the team’s fortunes following a mixed 2014 campaign. He wasn’t wrong.

Embed from Getty Images

Only seven players contributed to more goals in the 2015 regular season than Kljestan (22), with only one other central midfielder registering more goals and assists as Benny Feilhaber ended with a total of 25 combined. That puts into perspective how good Kljestan has been.

Let’s also not forget this is a player who joined the league after already playing 21 games for Anderlecht in the first four months of the Belgian side’s 2014-15 season. Tiredness proved to be no concern whatsoever as Kljestan started 33 of the Red Bulls’ 34 games – only Felipe and Luis Robles started all of them.

Despite playing 58 matches in just over 12 months, Kljestan looks as fresh as anyone else entering the MLS Cup Playoffs. He was the best player on the field against DC United on Sunday and it was his perfect free-kick to Dax McCarty that led to the winning goal.

DC United vs New York Red Bulls Sacha Kljestan Perry Kitchen

New York now take a huge away goal into the home leg at Red Bull Arena on Sunday and are expected to sail through to the Conference Finals.

His relationship with McCarty in midfield is one of the best in Major League Soccer. It’s hardly a surprise given the fact the two have been alongside each other since they entered the game professionally nearly ten years ago.

Kljestan was taken with the fifth overall pick of the 2006 MLS SuperDraft by Chivas USA before McCarty immediately followed as Dallas used their sixth overall selection to pick the tenacious tackler.

DC United vs New York Red Bulls Dax McCarty

They experienced different career paths but have wound up next to each other in one of the league’s most effective teams. A first ever MLS Cup title would represent the quality of their partnership and few could argue with the fact the Red Bulls’ have been the league’s most solid unit in 2015.

The club will now be preparing for Sunday’s huge Conference Semifinal second leg with DC. With Kljestan enjoying some of the best form of his season (one goal and three assists in his last three games), it’s hard to see the 2015 Supporters’ Shield winners losing.

How important is Sacha Kljestan to the New York Red Bulls?

Venue: CenturyLink Field – Sunday, November 1 – 21:30 ET (02:30 GMT)

Match Odds: Seattle Sounders 21/10 – Draw 12/5 – FC Dallas 13/5

Match Preview

Seattle Sounders take on FC Dallas at CenturyLink Field in the first leg of their Western Conference playoff semifinal on Sunday night as both sides look to move a step closer to the 2015 MLS Cup.

The Sounders come into this one off the back of their 3-2 home win over LA Galaxy in the knockout round on Wednesday, eliminating last year’s MLS Cup winners so they will be feeling confident, especially with home advantage again in the first leg here.

Seattle Sounders vs LA Galaxy MLS Playoffs 2015 Nelson Valdez

Seattle have an excellent record at home to Dallas and have won five of the last six meetings between the sides at CenturyLink Field.

The hosts are unbeaten in their last nine games and they have certainly hit form at the right time of the year. They need a big performance in this one in order to stand the best chances of progression over the two legs.

FC Dallas finished top of the Western Conference and will want to win the MLS Cup even more after missing out on the Supporters’ Shield on goal difference to the Red Bulls.

They come into this one off the back of beating San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 on the final day of the regular season and are unbeaten in five now.

Dallas know all too well how hard it is to pick up results at CenturyLink Field, having not won there since 2011 but have had an extra week to prepare for this game and should be the fresher side as a result of their first-round playoff bye.

If they can avoid defeat here they stand a great chance of progressing but know this is going to be a difficult tie in front of one of the league’s most intimidating crowds.

Team News

Seattle Sounders have five injury concerns heading into this one. Roman Torres, Andres Correa and Andy Craven are set to miss out while Oniel Fisher and Marco Pappa are doubts.

FC Dallas have three injuries to worry about. Rolando Escobar is expected to miss out while Bakary Soumare and Kellyn Acosta are doubts.

Key Points

Seattle Sounders’ last five: D/D/D/W/W

FC Dallas’ last five: W/D/W/W/W

Key Stat: Seattle have kept a clean sheet against Dallas in each of their last three meetings in all competitions.

Key Player: Obafemi Martins – The Sounders forward has had another brilliant season in front of goal and he will be looking to make things tough for Dallas on home soil.

Seattle Sounders 2-1 FC Dallas – Seattle to continue their strong run of form at home to Dallas and set themselves up nicely for the second leg next weekend.

Venue: CenturyLink Field – Wednesday, 28 October – 22:00 ET (02:00 GMT)

Match Odds: Seattle Sounders 11/8  – Draw 23/10 – LA Galaxy 19/10

Match Preview

Seattle Sounders entertain LA Galaxy on Wednesday night as the Western Conference rivals go to battle in the knockout round in what is arguably the juiciest fixture of the first round of postseason games.

The Sounders come into the tie off the back of their 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake in the final game of the regular season and have earned home-field advantage as a result of finishing higher than the Galaxy.

They will see this as a good chance to progress given LA Galaxy’s poor run of form away from home, but know they cannot take anything for granted.

In the last ten meetings between the sides when the Sounders have been at home they have only lost twice, winning six, but memories of last year’s Western Conference final exit at the hands of the Galaxy will still hurt.

Seattle Sounders vs Orlando City

LA Galaxy will be looking to replicate their playoff form of last year but know this is going to be a really tough task.

The sides met three times in the regular season, with the Galaxy going unbeaten (W2 D1) but they have failed to win at CenturyLink Field in each of their last three attempts.

Galaxy have the players to lead them in this game, but they cannot afford any slack performances. This is a huge chance for the likes of Steven Gerrard and Giovani Dos Santos to really make a name for themselves in their first MLS Cup Playoff appearances.

LA cannot afford to think about their dismal form on the road this season too much otherwise they’ll be in trouble from the off. The playoffs set up completely different types of games and Galaxy need to use that to their advantage in this monumental tie.

Team News

Seattle Sounders are expecting to be without Roman Torres, Andres Correa and Andy Craven. Oniel Fisher, Marco Pappa and Nelson Valdez are all doubts.

LA Galaxy have four injury concerns. Brian Perk and Bradford Jamieson IV are set to miss out, while Todd Dunivant and Baggio Husidic are doubts.

Key Points

Seattle Sounders’ last five in MLS: W/D/D/D/W

LA Galaxy’s last five in MLS: L/W/D/L/L

Key Stat: LA Galaxy’s road struggles saw them fail to win in 17 of their 19 regular season games away from StubHub Center. Homesick.

Key Player: Robbie Keane – LA Galaxy’s goal machine netted an impressive 20 goals in 24 regular season appearances. He knows how to deliver in big knockout games and will no doubt look to terrorise the Sounders defence here.

Score Prediction

Seattle Sounders 2-1 LA Galaxy – Sounders to progress in what looks set to be a really tight tie. Both sides will expect to find the net but home advantage should see Seattle advance. But don’t hold your breath as the lottery of the playoffs mean nothing is certain!

MLS Playoff Preview and Prediction: DC United vs New England Revolution

Competition: Major League Soccer Playoffs – DC United vs. New England Revolution

Venue: RFK Stadium – Wednesday, October 28 – 19:30 ET (23:30 GMT)

Match Odds: DC United 13/8 – Draw 9/4 – New England Revolution 13/8

Match Preview

DC United welcome New England Revolution to RFK Stadium in the first of the Eastern Conference playoff ties on Wednesday night as the two go head-to-head in the knockout round.

DC couldn’t have had a worse result heading into this game after they were thumped 5-0 by Columbus Crew on the final day of the regular season on Sunday.

The home side have won just two of their last five games, but as we know, knockout rounds see the form books chucked to one side.

DC need to come into this with a fresh approach and play the way they know they can. They won the second meeting between the sides in the regular season 2-1 back in June and can take confidence from that.

Embed from Getty Images

Finishing 4th and subsequently earning home-field advantage has given DC a great chance of progressing into the next round of the playoffs. They need to make sure they come out of the blocks quickly and not give New England the upper hand early on in the game.

New England Revolution will be relieved to have made the playoffs after having to wait until the final day and will now be hoping to go one step further than last year and win the MLS Cup.

They come into this one off the back of their solid 3-1 win away at New York City FC, a result which put an end to a four-game winless run.

Embed from Getty Images

The Revs failed to beat DC in the regular season, drawing the first meeting between the sides back in May before then, as previously mentioned, losing in June.

New England haven’t won at RFK Stadium since 2013, but will be feeling confident going into the game. They cannot, however, afford to let DC’s recent run of poor form make them complacent.

Team News

DC United have four injury concerns heading into this one. Eddie Johnson, Chris Korb, Davy Arnaud and Jared Jeffrey are all expect to miss out.

New England Revolution have just the one injury concern as Darrius Barnes looks set to miss out.

Key Points

DC United’s last five: L/L/W/W/L

New England Revolution’s last five: L/D/L/L/W

Key Stat: DC have only won two of their last six home games in the playoffs (W2 D3 L1).

Key Player: Charlie Davies – The Revs forward netted four times in last season’s playoff run. He played an influential role in their win over NYCFC on Sunday, with one assist and a goal and comes into the game in good form. His ten goals in the regular season make him his side’s top scorer for the campaign.

Score Prediction

DC United 1-2 New England Revolution – This is an intriguing tie because so much hangs on what DC United side turn up. Sunday’s 5-0 hammering has raised plenty of questions and the Revs will look to capitalise. We’re predicting the Revs to edge a close tie and progress into the next round, heaping more misery on DC.

Match Odds: Chicago Fire 23/10 – Draw 14/5 – New York Red Bulls 1/1

Match Preview

Chicago Fire host New York Red Bulls on Sunday night in the regular season finale. The Fire will regrettably finish bottom of the Eastern Conference regardless of their result on MLS Decision Day.

Their position in the table is justified down to the fact they are the only team in MLS to have a points-per-game ratio of under 1.00.

With one win in eight, this season has ended on a sour note and they will be hoping to at least give their fans something to cheer about on the final day.

New York Red Bulls have run away with the Eastern Conference this year after consistent performances throughout this term.

Currently battling FC Dallas for the Supporters’ Shield, a prize they won in 2013, the Red Bulls know that a win would more than likely see them lift the silverware due to a superior goal difference.

And with three wins in their last four, New York will feel extremely confident of securing their second Supporters’ Shield in three years here.

Match Odds: Philadelphia Union 13/10 – Draw 5/2 – Orlando City 19/10

Match Preview

Philadelphia Union welcome Orlando City to PPL Park in their final game of the regular season with the away side chasing an unlikely playoff spot.

Philadelphia haven’t had much to shout about this season but will be hoping to end on a high and deny Orlando any slim chance they have of making the knockout rounds.

The home side come into this one of the back of their 4-1 thumping at the hands of New York Red Bulls.

The have a lot to improve on for next season and will want to come back stronger in 2016 with a push for the playoffs.

Orlando City can still make the playoffs, but they require New England Revolution to lose and an eight goal difference swing in their favour, unlikely, but stranger things have happened.

We can expect the away side to go for it from the off, that’s all they can do here, but they have to ensure they don’t leave themselves vulnerable at the back.

They come into this one off the back of their 2-1 win over New York City FC, their 5th win on the bounce, form which has seen a late playoff serge.

This has been a solid first season for Orlando and they have the potential to become a force in MLS.

Philadelphia Union have three injury concerns. Jimmy McLaughlin, Brian Sylvester and Maurice Edu are all out. Steven Vitoria is suspended.

Orlando City have six injuries to deal with. Kevin Molino, Conor Donovan, Earl Edwards Jr. and Tally Hall are all out. Rafael Ramos and Tommy Redding are doubts.

Key Points

Philadelphia Union’s last five: L/W/D/L/L

Orlando City’s last five: W/W/W/W/W

Key Stat: Orlando City have scored at least two goals in their last three MLS games.

Key Player: Kaka – The Brazilian masterclass has plenty of experience in the biggest games, if Orlando are to stand any chance of making the playoffs they need goals, Kaka obviously has the ability to provide and finish chances against any opponent.

Philadelphia Union 1-3 Orlando City – Orlando to push hard for the eight goal swing, but ultimately leave themselves suspect to the counter.

New York City will be looking to end their first MLS season on a high and could play a huge role in whether or not New England Revolution make the playoffs.

The home side come into this one off the back of their 2-1 loss to Orlando City.

It has been a season to take plenty of positives from but New York City have a lot to learn and can only get better as they gain more experience.

New England Revolution’s playoff fate is in their own hands, all they need is a point to secure their place in the knockout rounds.

They haven’t been in the best of form recently, without a win in their last four games.

The Revs need their key players to put in strong performances and ensure they don’t make any slip ups on the final day of the regular season.

Top scorer Charlie Davies has netted nine for the season and he could prove to be the match winner in this one.
