Match Preview

Swansea City host Watford in this week’s Monday night fixture in the Premier League, with both teams looking to get back to winning ways after midweek defeats.

With just one win since October, Swansea have plummeted down to 17th position and are just one point above the relegation zone following their 4-2 defeat at home to relegation rivals Sunderland  on Wednesday.

That result really hasn’t helped matters for the struggling Swans, as they suffered their fourth loss at home and tenth defeat this season.

The one positive they can take away from the defeat to Sunderland is that they managed to score more than one goal in a match in the Premier League for the first time since a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth in November.

They will be looking to seal all three points here against stiff opposition in Watford before they embark on consecutive away games to Everton and West Brom in the next two weeks.

Watford are on a run of three defeats in a row in the league, and with no win in four matches, they have slipped down to tenth place after a fantastic run during December.

A 2-0 defeat on the road to Southampton on Wednesday saw them fail to score for the first time since October. They were poor in that game and didn’t really look like the attacking side we have seen so often this season.

The slump has come after a remarkable December for the Hornets. They picked up 10 points from a possible 15 last month, earning manager Quique Sanchez Flores the Manager of the Month award for December.

Odion Ighalo scooped the Player of the Month award and he will now need to reignite his impressive impressive partnership with Troy Deeney as they look to hurt a vulnerable Swansea defence to keep them on course for the top ten finish they will desperately want to attain.

The reverse fixture at Vicarage Road saw Watford win 1-0 thanks to an Odion Ighalo strike back in September. This will be the first game between the two in Wales since the pair played out a 1-1 draw during their Championship campaign in 2011.

Team News

Swansea City have no injuries to report, but Kyle Naughton looks set to miss out through suspension after picking up a red card against Sunderland that many perceived as harsh.

Watford have no fresh injury concerns. Lloyd Doyley is still sidelined with a neck injury, while Joel Ekstrand is also missing with an ACL injury. Nathan Ake is back from suspension and might return to the starting lineup.

Key Points

Swansea’s last five: D/W/D/L/L

Watford’s last five: W/D/L/L/L

Key Stat: The last time the two teams played out a 0-0 draw was back in 1921, so expect goals in this one.

Key Player: Andre Ayew – The Ghanaian winger got amongst the goals against Sunderland with his seventh of the season and his fifth at the Liberty Stadium. He will need to be at his best on Monday night if Swansea are to get out of this horrid run of form.

Score Prediction

Swansea City 1-1 Watford – A draw seems the most likely outcome, with both teams likely to get on the scoresheet. A win for either side will be huge, more so for Swansea, but Watford are solid at the back and don’t concede often. Score draw.

Premier League Preview and Prediction: Swansea City vs West Ham United

Competition: Premier League – Swansea City vs. West Ham United

Venue: Liberty Stadium – Sunday, December 20 – 16:00 GMT (11:00 EST)

Match Odds: Swansea City 11/10 – Draw 23/10 – West Ham United 13/5

Match Preview

Swansea City welcome West Ham to the Liberty stadium on Sunday afternoon in the hope of finally ending a dreadful run that has seen them fail to win in the Premier League since October.

With only one win in 13 in all competitions, the Swans are in dire need of points and will now need to pick up without Garry Monk, following his sacking a fortnight ago.

Monk’s departure has made December a lot tougher than it already was for the Welsh side as many big managerial names have ruled themselves out of the running, and their search for a successor could be difficult.

Their performance at Manchester City was better last week and they will feel the defeat was unjust in the end. They need to rally to try and pick up three points here to take pressure off the remaining games during the hectic Christmas period.

Swansea City’s record in the Premier League: P16 – W3 – D5 – L8

Things aren’t much better for the travelling side as West Ham haven’t won in the Premier League since October 24. Much of the reasoning is down to the loss of their star player Dimitri Payet. The playmaker has been sensational but is out for a while still with an ankle sprain.

West Ham are losing pace with the top four, despite a fantastic start, and are finding it hard without the creativity of Payet and more recently Manuel Lanzini.

The loss of form the Hammers suffered in the second half of last season was well documented and they need to avoid a repeat to ensure the club remain on an upward path ahead of their move to the Olympic Stadium next summer.

This will be the seventh Premier League meeting between Swansea and West Ham. The Swans have only beaten their opponents once in their last six meetings, and haven’t won in any of the last five, so West Ham may hold the advantage as far as recent history goes.

Team News

Swansea City may be missing Jonjo Shelvey as he struggles with a calf strain, but he could feature. Andre Ayew may slot back into midfield as he played as a lone striker in the loss to Manchester City.

West Ham United are without Dimitri Payet, Manuel Lanzini, Diafra Sakho, Victor Moses and Winston Reid through injury. Andy Carroll is a doubt but should play some part. Injuries are costing the Hammers at the worst time of the season and so Slaven Bilic will have some important decisions to make in balancing his side.

Key Points

Swansea City’s last five: L/D/L/L/L

West Ham United’s last five: D/L/D/D/D

Key Stat: Swansea have lost five of their last six matches, scoring just three goals in that time.

Key Player: Andre Ayew – Swansea are desperate for points as they try and steer themselves clear of the relegation battle and Ayew is their greatest asset in attack. He will be key to their chances on Sunday.

Score Prediction

Swansea City 1-1 West Ham United – Neither side seem to have the desire and quality to beat teams at the moment. With their star players not performing on a consistent basis and both without a win in five, a score draw seems inevitable.

West Ham open talks with £70,000-a-week Ligue 1 star

West Ham United have opened talks with Marseille’s Andre Ayew as they look to sign the pacey winger on a free transfer this summer, according to the Sun.

Ayew has scored ten goals with six assists this season and scooped the best African player in France award on Monday.

His contract with Marseille expires at the end of June and he could be set to leave French football after eight seasons with a move to the Premier League.

West Ham look to be leading the chase for the 25-year-old Ghanaian and are willing to offer him £70,000-a-week to secure his services, an amount that the club are willing to pay because there will not be a transfer fee involved.

Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester United have all previously been linked with Ayew in the past and could make an approach when his contract expires, but a move to the Hammers would guarantee him regular first team football.

Would Andre Ayew be a good signing for West Ham this summer? Is he worth £70,000 per week?
