Match Preview

New York Red Bulls host DC United on Sunday afternoon in a huge Eastern Conference battle between these Atlantic Cup rivals, with both sides desperate for three points.

The Red Bulls are just a point behind NYCFC in the race for the Eastern title and will be confident of a strong end to the season given the fact they are unbeaten in ten games.

Their current streak is the best in franchise history, while they will be looking to keep a third-straight clean sheet here against their long-standing enemies.

New York have won their last four at home and are looking like a real force. Jesse Marsch has a confident and motivated side at his disposal, who look set for a really strong playoff run.

DC United are still trying to secure a playoff spot before they can worry about their form. Ben Olsen’s men are two points behind Orlando City in the East going into the weekend and need to stay on their tails if they are to make the top six.

Their six-game unbeaten run came to an end at NYCFC last time out, losing 3-2 last weekend and that late Lampard goal might have taken the wind out of their sails.

However, they will be pumped up for a derby clash with the Red Bulls this weekend and need to go into the game looking to take the game to their rivals if they are to take anything from it.

The two previous meetings this season have both taken place in DC, with the side’s drawing 2-2 before DC won 2-0 in the most recent clash. However, the Black and Red haven’t won at Red Bull Arena since 2012 and are up against it.

Team News

New York Red Bulls are without Connor Lade and Gideon Baah, who remain sidelined through injury. On top of that, Mike Grella and Alex Muyl are both suspended and will miss out.

DC United are without Luciano Acosta, who is suspended, and that will be a real blow to their chances. On top of that, Chris Korb, Collin Martin, Chris Rolfe, Alhaji Kamara and Charlie Horton are all out, with Jared Jeffrey, Taylor Kemp and Kofi Opare all doubts, so DC are really stretched here.

Key Points

NY Red Bulls’ last five: D/W/D/W/W

DC United’s last five: W/D/D/W/L

Key Stat: New York Red Bulls are unbeaten in seven home games against DC, winning the last six on the bounce against their rivals. DC United haven’t scored a goal at Red Bull Arena in three years.

Key Player: Bradley Wright-Phillips – The Red Bulls striker has really found his form in recent weeks, scoring eight in his last seven. He is tied for the Golden Boot with David Villa and loves scoring against DC United, so expect him to be a real threat on Sunday night.

DC United host the New York Red Bulls in the latest Atlantic Cup rivalry clash on Friday night between two Eastern Conference sides that need to improve after slow starts.

DC have won just two of their ten games so far and are sitting seventh in the East, level on points with the Red Bulls who sit one place above them heading into the contest.

Both of United’s wins have come at home and so they will be fairly confident ahead of Friday’s game, though last week’s 2-0 home loss to NYCFC will have dented confidence.

DC know they need to improve quickly if they are to remain in contention for the playoffs come the end of the campaign. They play seven of their next ten games away from RFK Stadium so a crucial period of their season is approaching.

The Red Bulls looked doomed until three weeks ago. They had lost six of their first seven before then picking up seven points from their last three games.

Last week’s 1-1 draw in Orlando moved them into the top six for the first time this season and they will now have their eyes set on sides above them, with Jesse Marsch’s team just five points off the top of the East.

Injuries have hampered their chances so far but key players are returning with each week and so things are starting to look up for the Red Bulls, who play three of their next four at home following Friday’s trip to DC.

These rivals met five times last year, three times in the regular season and twice in the Eastern Conference semifinals of the playoffs. The Red Bulls won four of the five meetings in total, with the only other game ending in a 2-2 draw at RFK Stadium back in April.

Team News

DC United will welcome back Chris Rolfe following his suspension, while Fabian Espindola could return from the hamstring problem that has kept him out for three weeks. Bill Hamid remains out, along with Andrew Dykstra, Charlie Horton, Chris Korb and Collin Martin.

New York still have doubts hanging over Gideon Baah and Connor Lade, though Gonzalo Veron made his return to action last week and will be in contention to start here. Aurelien Collin made his debut in defence alongside Ronald Zubar and the pair may play again here, with Baah unlikely to make the starting lineup. Damien Perrinelle and Ryan Meara remain sidelined.

Key Points

DC United’s last five: W/L/W/D/L

NY Red Bulls’ last five: L/L/W/W/D

Key Stat: The Red Bulls are unbeaten in five matches against DC United (W4 D1), all of which took place last year in the regular season and playoffs combined.

Key Player: Bradley Wright-Phillips – The Red Bulls striker endured a tough start to the season but has now scored three in three and will hope to continue to add to his tally in this important rivalry clash. He bagged four goals in five games against DC last term and will be confident of finding the net again here.

Score Prediction

DC United 1-2 New York Red Bulls – Both sides will be fired up for this game but the Red Bulls look in much better shape coming into the contest. DC are struggling for any sort of form and have not beaten their rivals in their last five attempts. It should be an entertaining game but the Red Bulls look more likely to walk away with three points.

This Sunday evening will see the battle at the top of the Eastern Conference heat up as second place New York Red Bulls host first place DC United in the latest Atlantic Cup rivalry game in what is one of the standout fixtures of Heineken Rivalry Week.

The home side come into this one off the back of their 3-2 loss away at Chicago Fire on Wednesday night. They are sitting five points behind their DC United ahead of this fixture but have three games in hand so this is a great chance for Jesse Marsch’s side to close the gap on their fierce rivals.

The Red Bulls will be confident heading into the game but know it will be a tough task to take all three points. This is the third meeting between the sides this season in MLS and DC are yet to win, with the most recent game ending 2-2 at RFK Stadium in April.

The previous meeting at Red Bull Arena ended with in a 2-0 win for the home side back in March. Marsch and fans alike will be hoping for a repeat of that scoreline so they can move closer to DC at the top of the Eastern and claim back the Atlantic Cup series after last year’s 3-1 aggregate loss.

DC United come into this one after losing their second consecutive game. Their 2-0 home loss to San Jose Earthquakes is not what Ben Olsen would have expected from his side and there is a danger of the wheels coming off at the worst possible time.

DC have struggled on the road this season, having won just four of their 13 away ties. Olsen will be aware of Red Bulls’ recent home form and knows his players have a tough task on their hands here to take all three points.

Olsen’s side still have a chance of winning the Supporter’s Shield but are up against it now after their previous two defeats.

This is the first of two consecutive away games for DC and they will want to ensure they can take a positive result here so that confidence levels around the squad do not drop any further.

DC United have four injury concerns. Eddie Johnson and Chris Korb are out, while Fabian Espindola and Bill Hamid are doubts. Perry Kitchen and Davy Arnaud are both one booking away from suspension.

DC United host New York Red Bulls at the RFK Stadium on Saturday night as the Eastern Conference‘s top two sides clash in MLS for the second time this season.

The two met at the Red Bull Arena just three weeks ago when goals from Bradley Wright-Phillips and Lloyd Sam helped New York Red Bulls to a 2-0 victory over DC United in the first of the three Atlantic Cup rivalry matches this season.

Head Coach Ben Olsen and his DC side will be seeking immediate revenge and have recovered well since that 2-0 defeat to the Red Bulls with consecutive 1-0 wins over LA Galaxy and Orlando City.

There was more good news recently for DC United who will be delighted to have welcomed midfielder Luis Silva back from injury last weekend as he scored a stoppage time winner on his return after only being on the pitch for 15 minutes.

New York Red Bulls have started the season well, picking up two wins and a draw from their opening three games with the most recent victory coming in an impressive 2-1 success away at Columbus on March 28th.

Jesse Marsch‘s Red Bulls team enjoyed a rest last weekend and the players have had plenty of time to prepare for this crucial encounter and will be aiming to remain the only undefeated team in MLS alongside Real Salt Lake.

New York’s star-man Bradley Wright-Phillips has hit the ground running this season with two goals and two assists to his name already, so he will look to continue his fine form.

It promises to be another entertaining and feisty contest between the Atlantic Cup rivals in a fixture that has seen ten red cards brandished in a total of 32 meetings.

Team News

DC United’s Fabian Espindola continues to serve his ban and will miss this game and the next one before he will be available again. Midfielders Markus Halsti, Colin Martin and Nick DeLeon are also unavailable through injury, as is defender Steve Birnbaum. We’ve learnt this week that forward Eddie Johnson’s career is unfortunately all but over due to a heart condition.
