Cech, who has made 491 appearances for the club, is too good to sit on the Chelsea bench as backup to Thibaut Courtois as the Belgian has established himself as Jose Mourinho’s first-choice since returning from Atletico Madrid, where he spent three seasons on loan.
That means Cech will need to move on and at 32, he still has time ahead of him to enjoy his football. Mourinho will not stand in his way and that means a replacement for the Czech Republic international will be one of the Blues’ transfer priorities this summer.Embed from Getty Images
Mourinho likes to do his transfer business early and English ‘keeper Green looks like the primary target, according to a report in the Times.
Green has impressed despite playing for a QPR side that has struggled in the Premier League this season and relegation from the top flight will mean the R’s will need to sell.
Chelsea are looking to receive about £10 million for Cech and bringing in Green will cost the club considerably less than that.
The Times’ report suggests Green will be given a pay rise from his current £40,000 per-week wage if he agrees to a move to the Premier League leaders, but lack of regular playing time could be a concern for the former England No.1.Embed from Getty Images
Cech, who started in the Capital One Cup final at the start of the month, has told Czech paper Idnes that he does not want to sit on the bench for another season and that will spark interest from a host of European sides.
“It works with Thibaut. But I think it can work for only one season. I don’t want another season of this.”
Arsenal and Liverpool have been linked with a move for Cech but Chelsea would be unlikely to sell to English rivals. That will leave Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, AS Monaco, AC Milan and AS Roma left to fight for his signature.
Would Rob Green be a good signing for Chelsea? Does Petr Cech need to leave the club this summer?
