In pictures: Seattle Sounders 0-1 LAFC – MLS newcomers make statement with debut win

Seattle Sounders 0-1 LAFC – Los Angeles FC‘s first MLS game in history couldn’t have gone much better. They went to Seattle Sounders, one of the league’s most difficult places to visit, and showed incredible composure and belief to come away with a special 1-0 victory.

Bob Bradley’s side made the most of a strong start, with Diego Rossi’s 11th-minute strike from distance enough to earn all three points. The Sounders rallied to try and respond but couldn’t break down a resolute LAFC backline over the remainder of the game.

The expansion franchise have some star-studded names as their disposal but it still takes something special to go into one of the league’s top sides and walk out with a win and a clean sheet. LAFC did that and immediately made a statement to the rest of the league. They’re not just here to make up the numbers.

They pressed high, countered effectively and defended impressively as Seattle were left to rue missed chances and a lack of a cutting edge. It’s the third-straight season in which the Sounders have dropped their season opener.

MLS Playoffs Preview and Prediction: Seattle Sounders vs Houston Dynamo

2017 MLS Cup Playoffs – Western Conference Final (2nd Leg): Seattle Sounders vs Houston Dynamo

CenturyLink Field – Thursday, November 30 – 22:30 ET (03:30 GMT)

Match Odds: Seattle 3/4 – Draw 5/2 – Houston 7/2

Seattle Sounders vs Houston Dynamo: Preview

The Seattle Sounders welcome Houston Dynamo to CenturyLink Field on Thursday night for the second-leg of the 2017 Western Conference Final.

Many felt the Dynamo had nothing to lose heading into last week’s first-leg. But it seems whatever they did have to lose was lost on the night as the Sounders ran out 2-0 winners against a Houston side that had 10 men for more than an hour.

Jalil Anibaba’s 28th-minute red card left the Dynamo with a mountain to climb. Joe Willis may have saved the resulting penalty kick from Nicolas Lodeiro but they were already 1-0 down and that lead was doubled when Will Bruin fired in before halftime.

The Sounders had plenty more chances to put the game – and probably the tie – to bed but the Dynamo held on to somehow retain some form of optimistic hope ahead of Thursday’s second leg.

But make no mistake about it, Seattle have taken one giant stride into the MLS Cup Final. They have two crucial away goal and are well on track to have a chance at retaining their championship on December 9.

The Dynamo have to score at least two goals to have any chance at turning the tie around on Thursday night. But the Sounders have only conceded more than one goal at home on two occasions this season. And didn’t lose either of those games.

Seattle are unbeaten in 15 at home. They don’t need to attack Houston and should be able to wait for opportunities to attack on the counter. The odds of Houston advancing are slim but it should set up an exciting game as they have no choice but to go for it.

Seattle Sounders vs Houston Dynamo: Team News

The Seattle Sounders won’t be able to call on the services of powerful defender Roman Torres. The Panamanian is suspended as a result of yellow card accumulation but will be back for the MLS Cup Final, should Seattle advance. Stefan Frei missed the first leg with a hamstring strain and could return here, although his status isn’t yet confirmed. Brad Evans and Jordan Morris are ruled out with ongoing injury problems. Osvaldo Alonso is listed as questionable but could be in line to return.

The Dynamo will be without Jalil Anibaba, following his red card in last week’s first leg. Alberth Elis is also suspended as a result of yellow card accumulation. Tyler Deric is suspended as a result of off-field conduct. George Malki, AJ DeLaGarza and Memo Rodriguez remain their only injury absentees.

Seattle Sounders vs Houston Dynamo: Key Points

Seattle Sounders’ last five: W/W/D/W/W

Houston Dynamo’s last five: W/W/D/W/L

Key Stat: Fortress – Seattle Sounders have won their last four home games (including playoffs) by a combined score of 12-0. It’s been almost seven months since they lost at CenturyLink Field.

Key Player: Clint Dempsey – The veteran attacker scored twice in the Western Conference Semifinal win over Vancouver at home and will be looking to help the hosts through here. He is playing with extra hunger after missing last season’s run to the title and will be looking to exploit a Houston defence that will undoubtedly leave gaps as they chase a comeback.

Seattle Sounders vs Houston Dynamo: Prediction

Seattle Sounders 2-1 Houston Dynamo – The Dynamo have to go for it. They have enough attacking options to hurt the Sounders backline, particularly given the absence of Roman Torres. But the problem is, the more they attack, the more open they will be to the Sounders’ ruthless attack. The likes of Lodeiro and Dempsey will be looking to be clinical and put the tie to bed. Expect both sides to score, but the Sounders are surely sailing through to the final.

Gallery: Exclusive photos from Seattle’s incredible comeback over New England

Seattle Sounders produced an incredible late comeback to rescue a point at home to New England Revolution on Saturday, scoring three goals in the final 15 minutes to stun the visitors.

The Revs started well and found themselves 2-0 up through 26 minutes and on course for a first away win of the season. They must have thought they were cruising when Juan Agudelo made it 3-0 nine minutes into the second half, but Seattle weren’t giving up.

Brian Schmetzer sent Harry Shipp on and Seattle started to dominate. Nicolas Lodeiro’s deflected goal on 75 minutes gave the home fans a glimmer of hope, before Will Bruin made it 3-2 ten minutes later.

Then, with just two minutes to go, Osvaldo Alonso headed in from close range to send CenturyLink Field into raptures. Both sides left with a point, but given the manner of the result, New England will have felt like they’d left Seattle with a defeat.

There are still a lot of things that Galaxy need to improve on, especially away form, as they have only won one of their last 13 on the road.

Galaxy come into this one off the back of their 2-0 win over Vancouver, ending a seven-game winless run. Now is the time for LA to find form and really push on to challenge for the Supporters’ Shield.

Bruce Arena will be pleased to see some of his star players back in the side and on form, Robbie Keane scored on his return last time out and Steven Gerrard played a key role with both assists. He will be expecting his experienced players to step up here.

The Seattle Sounders picked up their third win from their last four games as they beat San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 on Saturday night in a highly entertaining game at CenturyLink Field.

Goals from Clint Dempsey and Jordan Morris sealed the win for Seattle, who managed to keep a clean sheet against a San Jose side that hadn’t been shutout in 22-straight games.

The Quakes had a great chance to score when Chris Wondolowski stepped up to the penalty spot in the 84th minute with the score at 1-0, but the striker could only find the post.

Morris then secured the win five minutes later with his fourth goal in as many games. Seattle are eighth in the Western Conference, just two points behind San Jose who sit fifth.

Seattle Sounders welcome Columbus Crew to CenturyLink Field on Saturday afternoon in another action packed weekend of MLS.

The Sounders have struggled for consistency so far in the 2016 campaign and as a result sit 9th in the Western Conference coming into the weekend.

Sigi Schmid’s side come into this tie off the back of their 3-1 loss away at Colorado in what was their fourth loss of the season. Seattle need to up their game if they are to ensure they don’t fall too far behind the top six.

This is the first of two consecutive home games for Seattle, giving them the chance to pick up some much needed points. Scoring goals has been a problem though, as they have only averaged a goal per game so far this season, so this is something they have to improve upon.

Seattle Sounders vs Philadelphia Union

Columbus Crew have also found themselves lower than expected at the start of the 2016 campaign. They sit 7th in the Eastern Conference but have recently found form.

Crew SC come into this one off the back of their 1-0 home win against Houston Dynamo – their second win on the bounce.

Gregg Berhalter’s side have lost just one in their last five and will be feeling confident heading into this one given the fact that they have scored at least twice in their last three away matches against Seattle in all competitions.

MLS Preview and Prediction: Seattle Sounders vs Montreal Impact

Competition: Major League Soccer – Seattle Sounders vs. Montreal Impact

Venue: CenturyLink Field – Saturday, April 2 – 22:00 ET (03:00 BST)

Match Odds: Seattle 10/11 – Draw 5/2 – Montreal 3/1

Match Preview

Seattle Sounders welcome Montreal Impact to CenturyLink Field on Saturday night as they look to make amends to their woeful start to the 2016 season.

The Sounders have lost all three of their games and are bottom of the Western Conference as a result. They come into this one off the back of their 2-1 home loss against Vancouver and need to pick up quickly.

Sigi Schmid will be more than concerned by this start to the season and will already be feeling intense pressure. His side must pick up their first win as soon as possible otherwise they could be at risk of confidence dropping to rock bottom, while finding themselves in a long run of bad form.

A win here wouldn’t even take Seattle off bottom spot but it’s not all doom and gloom, there is plenty of time to turn things around. But that change needs to happen, otherwise it could become a difficult season for the Sounders faithful to endure.

Seattle Sounders vs Vancouver Whitecaps 2016

By contrast, Montreal Impact have had a great start to 2016 and are sitting top of the Eastern Conference after their first three outings.

They won their opening two ties but do come into this one off the back of their 2-0 loss away against FC Dallas.

Mauro Biello will be delighted with his side but their loss last time out shows there is still room for improvement – they will see this as a great chance to continue their good run of form against Seattle, who they have had the better of more often than not.

Team News

Seattle will be without Brad Evans, Roman Torres and Erik Friberg once again, while Michael Farfan remains a doubt

Montreal Impact could be without up to six players through injury. Andres Romero, Cameron Porter, Patrice Bernier and Maxime Crepeau are all expected to miss out, while Marco Donadel and Laurent Ciman are both doubtful.

Key Points

Seattle Sounders’ form: L/L/L

Montreal Impact’s form: W/W/L

Key Stat: Seattle have only beaten Impact once in their four meetings (W1, L3) in Major League Soccer.

Key Player: Ignacio Piatti – The Impact man has had a great start to the 2016 campaign and has netted three in three.

Score Prediction

Seattle Sounders 1-2 Montreal Impact – It’s tough to see things drastically improving for Seattle in the short term as they haven’t been good enough in their opening three games. This will be a tight affair but playing against a Montreal side with such attacking quality will be the last thing Seattle need coming into this round of fixtures.

CenturyLink Field hosted the 2016 season’s first Cascadia Cup clash of the year as Vancouver Whitecaps edged past the Seattle Sounders by a 2-1 scoreline.

The result left Seattle as the only team in MLS yet to register a point after three consecutive losses have left the Sounders rooted to the bottom of the Western Conference.

Andreas Ivanschitz netted a superb free-kick during the game but it wasn’t enough as two Pedro Morales penalties saw the Whitecaps return home with all three points.

MLS Preview and Prediction: Seattle Sounders vs Sporting Kansas City

Competition: Major League Soccer – Seattle Sounders vs. Sporting Kansas City

Venue: CenturyLink Field – Sunday, March 6 – 19:00 ET (00:00 GMT)

Match Odds: Seattle 5/6 – Draw 5/2– Kansas City 16/5

Match Preview

Seattle Sounders kick off their 2016 campaign by welcoming Western Conference rivals Sporting Kansas City to CenturyLink Field on Sunday evening.

Both these sides fell short in the playoffs last season. Reaching the 2016 playoffs will be the minimum requirement once again and both sides can send out a real signal of intent here.

The Sounders will be looking to improve on last season’s fourth place finish in the Western Conference and a key start to the campaign is vital for getting early points on the board.

Sigi Schmid will be relatively pleased with Seattle’s preseason – they won their last two games after struggling with three consecutive defeats. Preseason can’t be looked into in too much depth as it doesn’t compare to the intensity of the real action, so it will be interesting to see how Seattle get going here.

Their two CONCACAF Champions League games against Club America will have helped preparations despite crashing out 5-3 on aggregate.

Sounders started the 2015 campaign with a 3-0 win and will look to replicate that this weekend. Their midseason wobble, where they lost six in seven games, probably cost them the Supporters’ Shield – they cannot afford a repeat of that this time around.

Seattle Sounders vs FC Dallas Fans

Sporting Kansas City struggled to get going in their 2015 campaign. It took them four attempts to get their first win and they will be looking to get off to a flyer here in what is a tricky opener.

Kansas City are unbeaten in their last three outings against Seattle, winning one and drawing two, and a win here would be a remarkable confidence booster to get things going for their 2016 regular season.

Peter Vermes’ side had an unbeaten preseason and will be looking to use that momentum heading into this tie. They finished 6th in the Western Conference last season and will be looking to improve on that and challenge for the Supporters’ Shield this time around.

Team News

Seattle Sounders have no injury concerns heading into the new campaign. The squad has undergone a little reshape though. The departure of Obafemi Martins will be a big role to fill and it appears Schmid is entrusting Jordan Morris with that task. He penned the highest paid contact for a homegrown player in Major League Soccer history so big things are expected from him. Joevin Jones and Michael Farfan will be hoping to make their Sounders debuts.

Sporting Kansas City will also be pleased not to have any major injuries heading into this one. However Ike Opara and Graham Zusi are doubts after picking up knocks towards the end of preseason. The squad has had minimal change which could be a plus for them this season, as players will continue to develop a great understanding of each other on the field. New signings Justin Mapp and Brad Davis will hope to feature.

Key Points

Seattle Sounders’ preseason form: L/L/L/W/W

Sporting Kansas City’s preseason form: W/D/D/D

Key Stat: Goals – Seattle have scored at least two goals in six of their last seven home Major League Soccer outings.

Key Player: Clint Dempsey – The obvious choice! Dempsey is easily the Sounders’ key man, as he makes them tick. His role in an injury-hit 2015 campaign was still immense. In the 20 games he featured in, Seattle only lost three times and he contributed to them finding the net 20 times, with ten goals and ten assists.

Score Prediction

Seattle Sounders 2-1 Sporting Kansas City – Seattle to start their 2016 regular season with a win. They won their last two games of preseason before their Champions League clashes, and they will have put them into good shape. The Sounders should make home advantage count in an action packed game. The last meeting between these sides was a 0-0 draw and Seattle will not want to continue their winless run against SKC in an important opener.
