Match Preview

Eastern Conference leaders DC United play host to Philadelphia Union on Sunday night as DC look to return to winning ways after a run of two straight defeats.

DC United come into this game five points clear of Columbus Crew at the top of the Eastern Conference. However, their recent form hasn’t been great due to the absence of Bill Hamid. The shot-stopper has been a huge loss and his absence significantly weakens DC’s backline.

Philadelphia come into this game without a win away from home all season, losing five of their last six on the road.

The Union need inspiration in the final third and with Fernando Aristeguieta a doubt for the game, they are extremely weak in the attacking department. CJ Sapong has delivered the goods on several occasions this term, with six goals in MLS, but hasn’t scored in Philly’s last three games.

This will be the third and final regular season meeting between the two this year. Philadelphia won 1-0 at PPL Park in May, before DC won 2-1 at RFK two weeks later, so it’s evenly poised heading into Sunday’s clash.

Both sides will be seeking a win as both will see weaknesses in the other, and with three very valuable points up for grabs, this should be an entertaining affair.

Team News

DC United will be without Bill Hamid as the USMNT keeper’ is recovering from hand and knee surgery. Michael Farfan, Collin Martin, Sean Franklin and Chris Pontius are all doubts. Michael Seaton is away on international duty.

Philadelphia Union’s Michael Lahoud has been deemed questionable. Fernando Aristeguieta, Eric Bird, Andrew Wenger and Richie Marquez are all doubts. Andre Blake is away on international duty.

Match Preview

DC United take on Philadelphia Union at RFK Stadium on Saturday night in what is the second meeting in two weeks, with DC looking for revenge following their 1-0 defeat at PPL Park on May 17.

DC come into this one in relatively poor form with no wins in their last three matches but they still sit at the top of the Eastern Conference. A loss in the week away to Portland Timbers handed them their third defeat of the season but they are yet to lose at RFK this season and will expect to get back to winning ways in this one.

DC United had been in great form before their three-game winless run, amassing 18 points from a possible 24 in their eight previous games. A win against Philadelphia would put them in a strong position, cementing their place at the top of the Eastern for at least another week.

Players like Chris Rolfe and Jairo Arrieta have been good so far and the team needs to look to them for guidance to get them out of this run they currently find themselves in.

Philadelphia Union come into this one having registered back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Their 2-0 win over New York Red Bulls last Sunday saw them keep a second consecutive clean sheet and they look to be in good shape.

The two wins come after a run of four straight losses in which they conceded ten goals so it’s a huge turnaround for the team that were languishing in ninth until those victories.

Heading to RFK Stadium hasn’t been an easy visit for away teams but the Union can take confidence after beating their opponents two weeks ago, with that crucial injury time winner from Zach Pfeffer giving them a possible psychological advantage.

Another bonus is that DC have played a game already this week in Portland and Philadelphia have had more rest time before this fixture.

Team News

DC United will be without Collin Martin, Fabian Espindola, Luis Silva, Nick Deleon and also Michael Farfan through injury, plus Eddie Johnson still isn’t available for selection. Davy Arnaud is one booking away from suspension and needs to be careful.

Philadelphia Union also have their fair share of injuries with Conor Casey, Michael Lahoud, Andre Blake and Steven Vitoria all expected to miss out. Doubts remain over Raymon Gaddis, Jimmy McLaughlin and Antoine Hoppenot. Maurice Edu is expected to captain the side after returning from suspension.

Key Points

DC United last five: D/W/L/D/L

Philadelphia Union last five: L/L/L/W/W

Key Stat: DC United are undefeated in their last 15 at RFK Stadium.

Key Player: Taylor Kemp – He has three assists for DC United so far, with two of them coming at home, and will look to provide more service for a strong frontline in this one.
