MLS Preview and Prediction: DC United vs Colorado Rapids

Competition: Major League Soccer – DC United vs. Colorado Rapids

Venue: RFK Stadium – Sunday, March 20 – 21:00 GMT (17:00 EDT)

Match Odds: DC United 13/10 – Draw  11/5 – Colorado Rapids 11/5

Match Preview

DC United welcome Colorado Rapids to RFK Stadium this weekend in a game which sees two sides looking for goals go head-to-head, both only managing to score once so far this term.

DC are obviously struggling with a lack of depth up top with Colin Doyle and Eddie Johnson both leaving the franchise during the offseason and so goals won’t be as easy to come by this season.

They do have an impressive defensive unit however, that will be tested without USMNT international Bill Hamid for the coming months and we expect Colorado to test them this weekend.

DC’s 0-0 draw with New England last week was a solid result but they will now hope to win their home opener and start to climb the Eastern Conference.

Colorado are very much a side that are efficient in what they do. They rarely concede goals at home but equally aren’t the most threatening side in attack.

They showed their defensive qualities last week as they beat LA Galaxy 1-0, thanks to a 95th minute winner. Colorado held the Galaxy to a pass completion percentage of just 64.9%, proving how tough they are to break down.

To add to this, Rapids ‘keeper Zac MacMath has only faced four shots on target in the two games so far this term, highlighting the defensive displays Colorado have been putting in.

Team News

DC United are missing both Bill Hamid and Andrew Dykstra so third choice ‘keeper Travis Worra will be between the sticks. Chris Korb remains out with an ACL tear and Markus Halsti and Fabian Espindola are doubtful.

Colorado Rapids are only without Sean St. Ledger and John Berner who are out with knee and wrist injuries respectively.

Key Points

DC United’s form: L/D

Colorado Rapids’ form: L/W

Key Stat: Colorado haven’t beaten DC in their last five meetings in MLS, a run which started in May 2011.

Key Player: Lamar Neagle – Utility forward Naegle was a great pick up from Seattle in the offseason and he has been leading the line in the absence of Espindola. He will be wanting to get his name on the scoresheet on Sunday night and should be a threat.

Score Prediction

DC United 1-0 Colorado Rapids – DC need to kick start their season and will look to build on last week’s draw with New England, in which they were very hard to break down, Colorado have been good so far and will keep the game low-scoring, but we see DC just edging this one.

MLS Preview and Prediction: New England Revolution vs DC United

Competition: Major League Soccer – New England Revolution vs. DC United

Venue: Gillette Stadium – Saturday, March 12 – 15:00 ET (20:00 GMT)

Match Odds: New England Revolution 4/6 – Draw 14/5 – DC United 4/1

Match Preview

New England Revolution welcome DC United to Gillette Stadium this weekend in what is a big tie for both of these Eastern Conference sides.

New England started their 2016 campaign with a 3-3 draw against Houston Dynamo in a thrilling clash in which they showed great resilience by scoring late on to pick up a point.

Jay Heaps will be pleased with how his side stole a share of the points but will be disappointed to have thrown away their early lead. He will be looking for a much tighter defensive display in their home opener.

The last meeting between these sides at Gillette Stadium saw the game finish 1-1. New England are unbeaten against DC in their last four home meetings and will expect to avoid defeat once more here.

DC United had an opening weekend to forget as they were thumped 4-1 by LA Galaxy. It was a huge disappointment for Ben Olsen as his side took an early lead, before capitulating in the second half.

They sit bottom of the Eastern Conference – which this early on isn’t a problem as it will be a few weeks before the standings take shape – but they will not want to be there come the end of Week 2’s fixtures.

This is going to be a tough tie and DC will give their fans a huge lift if they are to take points from New England ahead of their first home game of the 2016 campaign against Colorado Rapids next weekend.

No doubt Ben Olsen will have given his side an intense week of preparation heading into this game to ensure they don’t show the same frailties they did against the Galaxy. This is a chance for DC to show the rest of the conference what they are capable of.

Team News

New England Revolution have no injuries or suspensions heading into this tie.

DC United are still without goalkeeper Bill Hamid who has a long-term knee injury, while defender Chris Korb is also out with a knee problem. Markus Halsti is expected to miss out, while Patrick Nyarko and Fabian Espindola are both doubts.

Key Points

New England’s form: D

DC United’s form: L

Key Stat: Travelsick – DC United have lost 11 of their last 16 away games in MLS.

Key Player: Charlie Davies – The Revs forward bagged his first goal of the season on the opening day and will be full of confidence. He could play a pivotal role to his side this season if he can score on a regular basis.

Score Prediction

New England Revolution 2-1 DC United – We can expect these two sides to provide each other with a difficult game from the off. Both defences will look to be far more organised than last weekend as they conceded seven goals combined. New England look set just to edge it and should pick up their first win of the new season against Eastern rivals on Saturday night.

MLS Playoff Preview and Prediction: DC United vs New England Revolution

Competition: Major League Soccer Playoffs – DC United vs. New England Revolution

Venue: RFK Stadium – Wednesday, October 28 – 19:30 ET (23:30 GMT)

Match Odds: DC United 13/8 – Draw 9/4 – New England Revolution 13/8

Match Preview

DC United welcome New England Revolution to RFK Stadium in the first of the Eastern Conference playoff ties on Wednesday night as the two go head-to-head in the knockout round.

DC couldn’t have had a worse result heading into this game after they were thumped 5-0 by Columbus Crew on the final day of the regular season on Sunday.

The home side have won just two of their last five games, but as we know, knockout rounds see the form books chucked to one side.

DC need to come into this with a fresh approach and play the way they know they can. They won the second meeting between the sides in the regular season 2-1 back in June and can take confidence from that.

Finishing 4th and subsequently earning home-field advantage has given DC a great chance of progressing into the next round of the playoffs. They need to make sure they come out of the blocks quickly and not give New England the upper hand early on in the game.

New England Revolution will be relieved to have made the playoffs after having to wait until the final day and will now be hoping to go one step further than last year and win the MLS Cup.

They come into this one off the back of their solid 3-1 win away at New York City FC, a result which put an end to a four-game winless run.

The Revs failed to beat DC in the regular season, drawing the first meeting between the sides back in May before then, as previously mentioned, losing in June.

New England haven’t won at RFK Stadium since 2013, but will be feeling confident going into the game. They cannot, however, afford to let DC’s recent run of poor form make them complacent.

Team News

DC United have four injury concerns heading into this one. Eddie Johnson, Chris Korb, Davy Arnaud and Jared Jeffrey are all expect to miss out.

New England Revolution have just the one injury concern as Darrius Barnes looks set to miss out.

Key Points

DC United’s last five: L/L/W/W/L

New England Revolution’s last five: L/D/L/L/W

Key Stat: DC have only won two of their last six home games in the playoffs (W2 D3 L1).

Key Player: Charlie Davies – The Revs forward netted four times in last season’s playoff run. He played an influential role in their win over NYCFC on Sunday, with one assist and a goal and comes into the game in good form. His ten goals in the regular season make him his side’s top scorer for the campaign.

Score Prediction

DC United 1-2 New England Revolution – This is an intriguing tie because so much hangs on what DC United side turn up. Sunday’s 5-0 hammering has raised plenty of questions and the Revs will look to capitalise. We’re predicting the Revs to edge a close tie and progress into the next round, heaping more misery on DC.

MLS Preview and Prediction: DC United vs New York City FC

Competition: Major League Soccer – DC United vs. New York City FC

Venue: RFK Stadium – Friday, October 2 – 19:00 ET (00:00 BST – Live on Sky Sports 5)

Match Odds: DC United 10/11 – Draw 12/5 – NYCFC 11/4

Match Preview

DC United host New York City FC on Friday night to get the final month of MLS regular season action underway in fine style as these two have lots to play for in the Eastern Conference.

DC are in freefall at the moment. They have lost five of their last six and have not won since early August.

They seemed to be cruising towards the Eastern Conference title as well as the Supporters’ Shield at the halfway point of the season but the wheels have come off and they are now just trying to hold on to their playoff spot.

DC United’s MLS record: P31 – W13 – D6 – L12

Currently sitting on 45 points in the East, DC United find themselves in fourth spot, eight ahead of Friday’s opponents NYCFC who are chasing a top six finish with three games to play. A win here would secure a playoff place for DC but that is by no means as likely to happen as the odds suggest.

NYCFC need to basically win all three of their remaining fixtures to stand a good chance of making the postseason on their first attempt. It has been a largely disappointing season for Jason Kreis and his team but their recent form has been impressive and they finally look to be a solid force in MLS.

Three wins on the bounce set them up well coming into this one. Last weekend’s dramatic late 2-1 win at Vancouver will only have further boosted confidence and they will be looking to win four games in a row for the first time in MLS at DC here.

New York City FC’s MLS record: P31 – W10 – D7 – L14

The reverse fixture ended 3-1 to New York City in August as the home side came from 1-0 down to record a huge victory and they’ll be looking for a repeat performance.

Team News

DC United will be without Connor Doyle and Steve Birnbaum for the game as they will serve one-game suspensions for picking up yellow cards last weekend. Eddie Johnson and Chris Korb remain out, while Davy Arnaud is a doubt as he is dealing with concussion symptoms.

New York City have three injury concerns as Iraola, George John and Tony Taylor are all ruled out. Other than that, Kreis has a full squad to choose from.

Key Points

DC United’s last five: L/L/D/L/L

New York City FC’s last five: L/L/W/W/W

Key Stat: New York City have scored at least one goal in each of their last eight MLS games, while DC United have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last six league outings.

Key Player: David Villa – The Spanish striker is now on 17 goals for the season. He has been a shining the light for the expansion franchise all year and is consistently delivering when needed.

Score Prediction

DC United 1-2 NYCFC – This should be a fiercely competitive game as both need the win for playoff implications. DC have been abysmal of late and may struggle to deal with a New York City side that looks hungry. We’re going with a narrow away win in what should be an entertaining game.

MLS Preview and Prediction: Montreal Impact vs DC United

Competition: Major League Soccer – Montreal Impact vs. DC United

Venue: Stade Saputo – Saturday, September 26 – 17:00 ET (22:00 BST)

Match Odds: Montreal Impact 4/5 – Draw 5/2 – Chicago 16/5

Match Preview

Montreal Impact entertain D.C United this weekend with both sides in playoff places as the end of the regular season closes in.

Impact come into this one off the back of their 2-1 midweek victory over Chicago Fire as Didier Drogba netted once again.

The home side are sitting sixth in the Eastern Conference, four points ahead of Orlando City with two games in hand. Mauro Biello will feel his side should make the playoffs now but knows there is no room for careless mistakes.

This is the third and final regular season meeting between the sides and Montreal are yet to win against their opponents.

DC United have dropped off the pace in the Eastern Conference and have now failed to win any of their last five matches, they need a big performance in this one.

Despite their poor run of form they still sit fourth with an outside chance of finishing top of the Eastern, but that would be dependent on results going their way.

They come into this one off the back of their 2-1 home defeat to the Columbus Crew and are a side lacking confidence.

DC will take confidence from the fact they have won the two previous meetings in the season between the sides, both 1-0, and know they are capable of beating Montreal. This however, will not be an easy task.

Team News

Montreal Impact are expected to still be without Cameron Porter, Kenny Cooper, Patrice Bernier and Justin Mapp. Laurent Ciman is suspended, while Nigel Reo-Coker, Andres Romero and Marco Donadel are all one booking away from suspension.

DC United have three injury concerns. Eddie Johnson and Chris Korb are expected to miss out while Davy Arnaud is a doubt. Perry Kitchen is suspended, while Conor Doyle, Steve Birnbaum and Taylor Kemp are all one booking away from suspension.

Key Points

Montreal Impact’s last five: W/D/D/W/W

DC United’s last five: L/L/L/D/L

Key Stat: DC United have failed to win any of their last five regular season games, losing four of them.

Key Player: Didier Drogba – The powerhouse has five goals in five appearances for Impact, leaving us wondering how much better their season could have been if they had the goal-machine from the start of the season.

Score Prediction

Montreal Impact 2-1 DC United – Impact to record their first of the season against DC as they take advantage of their opponents poor run of form.

MLS Preview and Prediction: New York Red Bulls vs DC United

Competition: Major League Soccer – New York Red Bulls vs. DC United

Venue: Red Bull Arena – Sunday, August 30 – 19:00 ET (00:00 BST)

Match Odds: NY Red Bulls 8/15 – Draw 100/30 – DC United 9/2

Match Preview

This Sunday evening will see the battle at the top of the Eastern Conference heat up as second place New York Red Bulls host first place DC United in the latest Atlantic Cup rivalry game in what is one of the standout fixtures of Heineken Rivalry Week.

The home side come into this one off the back of their 3-2 loss away at Chicago Fire on Wednesday night. They are sitting five points behind their DC United ahead of this fixture but have three games in hand so this is a great chance for Jesse Marsch’s side to close the gap on their fierce rivals.

The Red Bulls will be confident heading into the game but know it will be a tough task to take all three points. This is the third meeting between the sides this season in MLS and DC are yet to win, with the most recent game ending 2-2 at RFK Stadium in April.

The previous meeting at Red Bull Arena ended with in a 2-0 win for the home side back in March. Marsch and fans alike will be hoping for a repeat of that scoreline so they can move closer to DC at the top of the Eastern and claim back the Atlantic Cup series after last year’s 3-1 aggregate loss.

DC United come into this one after losing their second consecutive game. Their 2-0 home loss to San Jose Earthquakes is not what Ben Olsen would have expected from his side and there is a danger of the wheels coming off at the worst possible time.

DC have struggled on the road this season, having won just four of their 13 away ties. Olsen will be aware of Red Bulls’ recent home form and knows his players have a tough task on their hands here to take all three points.

Olsen’s side still have a chance of winning the Supporter’s Shield but are up against it now after their previous two defeats.

This is the first of two consecutive away games for DC and they will want to ensure they can take a positive result here so that confidence levels around the squad do not drop any further.

Team News

New York Red Bulls are expected to be without Chris Duvall. Kemar Lawrence is also a doubt for this one. Ronald Zubar returned on Wednesday and could line up again alongside Matt Miazga. Shaun Wright-Phillips will be hoping for a start after sitting on the bench once again on Wednesday.

DC United have four injury concerns. Eddie Johnson and Chris Korb are out, while Fabian Espindola and Bill Hamid are doubts. Perry Kitchen and Davy Arnaud are both one booking away from suspension.

MLS Preview and Prediction: DC United vs San Jose Earthquakes

Competition: Major League Soccer – DC United vs. San Jose Earthquakes

Venue: RFK Stadium – Saturday, August 22 – 19:00 ET (00:00 BST)

Match Odds: DC United 4/5 – Draw 5/2 – San Jose Earthquakes 7/2

Match Preview

DC United face San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night as the away side look to build on Wednesday night’s shock 5-0 win away at Sporting KC with a victory at the Supporters’ Shield leaders.

DC still top the MLS standings after 24 weeks and look on track to lift a first Supporters’ Shield since 2007. They are one point in front of LA Galaxy with eight games to play and need to keep winning as many games as possible to stay top of the pile.

A disappointing 3-1 loss at NYCFC last weekend ended a three-game win streak and a return to home comforts should see them restore celebration as they have won each of their last three league games at RFK Stadium.

They beat Panamanian side Arabe Unido 1-0 on Wednesday night in the Champions League and are rightly favourites for this one.

San Jose went into their double gameweek looking like a side in trouble. Few would have predicted them getting anything from away trips to Sporting Kansas City and DC United but Wednesday night’s 5-0 win at Sporting Park stunned the nation.

That victory followed a 1-0 win over Colorado and they will now look to win a third-straight game for the first time this season.

They are now just three points behind Seattle in the hunt for the last remaining playoff spot with ten games to play and have plenty to play for.

The Quakes have all three games in which they have played away at Eastern Conference opposition this season so winning at DC will be a real test, even after their midweek success.

Photo: Denise McCooey

DC won last season’s meeting 2-1 in San Jose and beat the Earthquakes 1-0 at RFK the year before in a game that ended a three-game losing streak at home to the Quakes.

Team News

DC United are still without Eddie Johnson and Chris Korb, while Fabian Espindola and Nick DeLeon are doubtful but could make the squad. Bill Hamid should return between the sticks along with a host of first-team players who were rested for the midweek CONCACAF Champions League tie with Arabe Unido.

San Jose Earthquakes will be without Innocent Emeghara, Steven Lenhart, Jordan Stewart, Matias Perez-Garcia and Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi. Dominic Kinnear could name an unchanged lineup from the team that thumped SKC on Wednesday night.

Key Points

DC United’s last five: L/W/W/W/L

San Jose Earthquakes’ last five: L/D/L/W/W

Key Stat: San Jose Earthquakes have won three of the last four meetings between the two when DC United have been at home.

Key Player: Chris Wondolowski – The Quakes forward netted twice in the stunning midweek win over Sporting KC, taking his tally with San Jose to 100. He also became the first player in league history to score at least 10 goals in six consecutive seasons and will be a real threat on Saturday evening too.

Score Prediction

DC United 2-1 San Jose Earthquakes – Expecting San Jose to really challenge DC on Wednesday night after their midweek success. But that game may see them tire towards the end of this clash and DC should edge it by the odd goal.

MLS Preview and Prediction: FC Dallas vs DC United

Competition: Major League Soccer – FC Dallas vs. DC United

Match Odds: FC Dallas 4/5 – Draw 13/5 – New England Revolution 100/30

Match Preview

FC Dallas host top of the Eastern Conference DC United this weekend in what should be a tie worth watching.

Dallas have won their last three on the bounce, including last weekend’s 2-0 victory away against Orlando City.

Oscar Pareja’s side are one of three Western Conference teams who are level on 32 points, but they sit third on goal difference behind Vancouver Whitecaps in second and leaders Seattle Sounders. Dallas have played one game less than their opponents.

Fabian Castillo is in great form but missed out on the chance to score for the fourth game running in the victory over Orlando. The forward has netted seven times so far this campaign.

DC United are leading the Eastern Conference by eight points and look comfortable despite a slight dip in form.

Ben Olsen will be hoping his side can get back to winning ways in this tie as they have lost three in their last six outings and won just twice.

They lost last time out in the away tie at Seattle Sounders in a tight game and can count themselves unlikely to have come away with a 1-0 defeat.

DC will want to keep the cushioning of the eight point lead at the top of the Eastern and must avoid losing back-to-back games to ensure the chasing pack stay out of reach. They are leading the way in the Supporters’ Shield standings by three points, which adds to the occasion as Dallas could potentially draw level on points if they win this one.

Team News

FC Dallas have a fully fit squad going into this one but Atiba Harris remains one yellow card away from a suspension.

DC United have seven injury concerns. Eddie Johnson and Bill Hamid are set to miss out while, Michael Farfan, Collin Martin, Sean Franklin, Chris Pontius and Luis Silva are doubtful. Fabian Espindola is suspended and Perry Kitchen is one booking away from a suspension.

Key Points

FC Dallas’ last five: L/D/W/W/W

DC United’s last five: L/W/W/D/L

Venue: CenturyLink Field – Friday, July 3 – 23:00 ET (Saturday, July 4 – 04:00 BST)

Match Odds: Seattle Sounders 17/20 – Draw 5/2 – DC United 16/5

Match Preview

Seattle Sounders face DC United this weekend. The Sounders are sitting second in the Western Conference while DC are top of the Eastern Conference.

Seattle come into the game off the back of a 4-1 thumping at the hands of fierce rivals Portland Timbers last weekend and they have now lost their last three regular season outings.

Sigi Schmid will no doubt be concerned with his side’s’ recent form, as they are now three points behind Vancouver Whitecaps and have Portland Timbers and LA Galaxy closing in on them in second, both just one point behind.

A win here for the Sounders would be a huge victory, not just for ending their winless run but also sending out a message to their chasers that they are still to be feared.

Embed from Getty Images

DC United come into this one after their midweek loss in the US Open Cup to Philadelphia Union, leaving them without a win in their last two games.

Their last regular season match was the draw at Toronto last week, which came after back-to-back wins. They are eleven points above New England Revolution in the Eastern Conference and look to be running away from the chasing pack.

Ben Olsen will be pleased with his side and will be expecting to continue building on their great season so far, an away win here would be a great result.

DC have been winning many games this season by the odd goal and will be difficult to break down. If they can make things tough for the Sounders they have a great chance of taking all three points.

Embed from Getty Images

Seattle will be desperate to try and close the gap on the MLS Supporters’ Shield leaders in what should be a gripping contest in the only regular season meeting between the two this year.

Team News

Seattle Sounders are still expecting Obafemi Martins to be sidelined, while Osvaldo Alonso and Andres Correa are doubts. Clint Dempsey and Brad Evans will be away with the USMNT preparing for the upcoming Gold Cup.

DC United will be without Eddie Johnson, while Michael Farfan, Collin Martin, Sean Franklin and Chris Pontius are all doubtful.

Key Points

Seattle Sounders’ last five in MLS: L/W/L/L/L

DC United’s last five in MLS: L/L/W/W/D

Key Stat: Seattle have scored at least two goals in their last four home matches against DC United in all competitions.

Key Player: Jairo Arrieta – The forward has netted five so far this season and scored in the midweek loss, so he will be expecting to hurt the Sounders and be on the winning side this time out.

Score Prediction

Seattle Sounders 1-2 DC United – DC United to return to winning ways and make things more difficult for the struggling Sounders.

MLS Preview and Prediction: Chicago Fire vs DC United

Competition: Major League Soccer – Chicago Fire vs. DC United

Venue: Toyota Park – Wednesday, June 24 – 20:30 ET (01:30 BST)

Match Odds: Chicago Fire 1/1 Draw 5/2 DC United 13/5

Match Preview

Bottom play top on Wednesday evening as Chicago Fire host DC United looking to get their first win in three. DC are back to winning ways after their 2-1 victory over New England Revolution on Sunday night and will be hoping to further extend their lead at the top of the MLS Supporters’ Shield standings here.

Chicago Fire are back in action after enjoying a bye week and should be much more fresh than their opponents. Playing at Toyota Park, where they have won four times from seven matches, should also give the fans confidence that they can give DC a real game.

Despite sitting at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, the Fire have bright sparks in their team with David Accam and Harry Shipp enjoying solid season’s. Accam is the Fire’s leading scorer on six, while Shipp has two goals and five assists, though Frank Yallop is set to be without the Designated Player striker on Wednesday night as a result of injury.

DC United have won the last two meetings between the two, including the game at RFK Stadium at the start of the month in which Ben Olsen’s men won 3-1.

DCU are sat top of the Eastern Conference on 31 points, seven clear of second-placed New England Revolution and look to be in fine shape to win the conference for the second year running.

Last week they ended their two-game losing streak by beating the Revs but this is their fifth match of six to be played this month, and that could start to have a real effect on performances.

Chris Rolfe is a man in form having netted two late goals to beat New England last weekend, putting him on six for the season, and he will hope to provide the difference again in this one.

DC United have only picked up seven points away from home this season which isn’t a terrific return but they are well and truly clear in first place in the Eastern Conference and head to Chicago as favourites.

Team News

Chicago Fire will be without Patrick Nyarko as well as DP’s Shaun Maloney and David Accam.

DC United will be without Eddie Johnson, Sean Franklin, Michael Farfan, Collin Martin, Chris Pontius.

Key Points

Chicago Fire last five: D/W/L/L/L

DC United last five: W/W/L/L/W

Key Stat: DC United haven’t won at Toyota Park since 2009.

Key Player: Harry Shipp – Shipp has been brilliant this season and his killer passes could pick off a DC United team who haven’t had much rest time before this midweek clash.

Score Prediction

Chicago Fire 1-0 DC United – DC United have played four times so far in June, with this being their fifth game in just over three weeks. The Fire are ready for this one, they have had more rest time and will look to end three games without a victory with a home win over the Eastern Conference leaders.
