FC Dallas vs Houston Dynamo: Preview

FC Dallas welcome Houston Dynamo to Toyota Stadium as MLS Rivalry Week starts with the Texas Derby on Wednesday night. This will be the third Texas Derby of the season but both previous clashes have ended in a draw, so El Capitán is up for grabs here.

As things stand this season’s rivalry series between the two clubs means that Houston are in a position to retain El Capitán. But a win for either side on Wednesday would decide who ends the season with bragging rights.

Dallas are in a bad run of form. It’s the worst stage of the campaign for the wheels to be coming off, but they haven’t won in four, losing three of those. Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Sporting KC leaves them five points off the top.

They are only holding on to a top six spot by two points and know they need to beat Houston to get back on track. Victory on Wednesday would move Dallas back ahead of the Dynamo as we enter the final two months of the season.

Houston have quietly been putting together a good run of form. They’ve not been setting the world alight, but were unbeaten in six before Saturday’s 2-1 loss in Vancouver.

The Dynamo are just three points off league leaders Sporting KC and Seattle coming into Wednesday’s set of fixtures. They haven’t made the playoffs since 2013 but look well on course to do so this term.

The worry for the visitors is that they’ve struggled on the road at Dallas for the past six years. They haven’t won at Toyota Stadium since 2011.

The two sides have already drawn their two meetings this season. First playing out a 0-0 at Toyota Stadium back in May before a 1-1 draw at BBVA Compass Stadium a month later.

FC Dallas vs Houston Dynamo: Team News

FC Dallas have no injury worries ahead of Wednesday’s derby. Head coach Oscar Pareja is likely to make at least one change after watching his team lose at SKC on Saturday. Dallas also have a trip to Columbus to think about on Saturday.

Houston Dynamo remain without George Malki for the season. Other than that, they have no injury concerns. Alberth Elis will return to the side after serving a suspension at Vancouver on Saturday. Juan David Cabezas and AJ DeLaGarza are suspended as a result of yellow card accumulation. Houston play SKC at home on Saturday, so Wilmer Cabrera may have to rotate his side.

FC Dallas vs Houston Dynamo: Key Points

FC Dallas’ last five: W/L/L/D/L

Houston Dynamo’s last five: W/D/D/W/L

Key Stat: Houston haven’t won away at their Texan Derby rivals in six years. FC Dallas have won four of the last six clashes at Toyota Stadium, outscoring the Dynamo 13-4 in that time.

Key Player: Maximiliano Urruti – The FC Dallas striker scored in the 1-1 draw at BBVA Compass Stadium back in June. He hasn’t scored in five but is still Dallas’ leading scorer with 11 this season. The hosts will look to Urruti for inspiration as they look to end their poor run of form.

FC Dallas vs Houston Dynamo: Prediction

FC Dallas 1-1 Houston Dynamo – It’s difficult to see where a winner is going to come from on Wednesday night. There is more pressure on Dallas than Houston here. But that should mean the Dynamo set up to stifle the home side, just as they did in the season’s first meeting back in May, which ended 0-0. FC Dallas have to win the game to take home this season’s El Capitán. But recent forms suggests they won’t have enough to do so.

Match Preview

Easily one of the standout fixtures of the weekend takes place on Sunday evening in the latest instalment of the Texas Derby. FC Dallas welcome Houston Dynamo to Toyota Stadium with the Western Conference sides locked level on points.

Dallas are sitting 3rd, having played a game less than Houston. Inconsistent form has cost them the chance to be in a really strong position at the top of the West, they could be leading the way with games in hand but are three points adrift.

They come into this one having lost back-to-back games. A crazy opening ten minutes which saw three goals was enough for Dallas to lose 2-1 at Chicago last time out and they need to get back to winning ways this weekend.

Houston Dynamo are 2nd and conceding goals has been a problem for the Texan side. While they are just three points off top spot they have just a plus two goal difference.

They have been in a rut of form on the road and have failed to pick up a point in their last five away games. This is going to be a big ask for them to break that trend, but you cannot rule anything out.

Houston do have a chance to to take advantage of a below par Dallas side but they are also coming into this one having lost their last two games.

Team News

Mauro Diaz is the only notable absentee for Dallas.

George Malki and Eric Alexander are both expected to miss out for Houston.

Key Points

FC Dallas’ last five: D/W/D/L/L

Houston Dynamo’s last five: L/W/W/L/L

Key Stat: Houston Dynamo have lost their last five away MLS games.

Key Player: Maximiliano Urruti – The Dallas forward has scored six times this season but has failed to find the back of the net in his last three. Oscar Pareja and the Dallas faithful will be expecting him to break his duck here.

Score Prediction

FC Dallas 2-2 Houston Dynamo – Given the form of the Western Conference pair ahead of this tie a score draw looks a likely result. While it leaves Dallas with a game in hand on Houston it does them no favours in the race for the Supporters’ Shield nor making the most of home advantage.

FC Dallas look to push for the Western Conference and continue their hunt for the Supporters’ Shield on Saturday night as Houston Dynamo visit Toyota Stadium for the third Texas Derby of the year.

With two losses in a row, Dallas have lost control of top spot in the Western and need to get back to winning ways quickly to stay within contention with just three weeks to go.

However, their recent form suggests they are prone to a slip up, having lost five of their last eight in MLS and winning the Supporters’ Shield may now be a bridge too far.

Houston have lost both previous meetings in this season’s rivalry, with a 2-0 loss and a 4-1 drubbing leaving them without a chance of claiming El Capitan in 2015. The Dynamo have remarkably lost 2-0 away from home five times this season, so scoring on the road is no easy task for Owen Coyle’s men.

And with just three wins in their last eight they have remained short of the form necessary for a playoff berth.

Houston Dynamo’s record in MLS: P31 – W11 – D8 – L12

They are, surprisingly, only three points off Portland in the race for sixth in Western Conference and so a playoff spot is still theirs to play for as we approach the end of the regular season.

Team News

FC Dallas have two first teamer’s doubtful as Dan Kennedy and Bakary Soumare missed the loss to LA Galaxy and may miss the visit of Houston.

Houston Dynamo will be without Jermaine Taylor who has a right quadricep tear and will miss the trip. Kofi Sarkodie has a bruise on his right knee but should be fit to feature.

Key Points

FC Dallas’ last five: W/W/W/L/L

Houston Dynamo’s last five: W/L/L/W/W

Key Stat: FC Dallas have won six of their last seven at home in MLS.

Key Player: Fabian Castillo – The sensational winger has proven once again this season what an asset he is to Dallas and MLS. The Columbian has become the main man for Dallas and as such we believe he will inspire another home win.

Score Prediction

FC Dallas 2-0 Houston Dynamo – After an impressive stint at home and with the playoffs edging closer, we expect Dallas to ease to victory, probably earning a clean sheet in the process to seal this year’s Texas Derby series with a 100% record.

Match Preview

FC Dallas host Houston Dynamo in the second Texas Derby game of the 2015 season on Friday night, with the home side looking to end their six-game winless streak in MLS against their fierce rivals.

Dallas haven’t won a game since early May, when they beat LA Galaxy 2-1 just a week after winning the first Texas Derby of the year in Houston by a 4-1 scoreline, but they will hope that a return to Toyota Stadium after five-straight road games can spark an improvement.

A run of three losses and three draws has seen FCD fall down to sixth in the Western Conference, barely hanging on to the last playoff spot in a very tight table.

Houston are in ninth place in the Western but are just three points behind Dallas, knowing a win on Friday would move them above their rivals on goal difference.

Owen Coyle’s side have only won once in their last four MLS games as inconsistency is costing them a playoff position at the midpoint of the campaign.

Their last away trip saw them lose 2-0 in Portland so they must improve on that performance if they’re to win here. They also need to try and forget the first meeting this term and focus on getting a result in Dallas.

History would suggest that might be difficult as Dallas have won the last three MLS meetings over the last three seasons, including the game in Houston this year, and haven’t lost at home to the Dynamo since 2011.

FC Dallas have won El Capitan for the past two seasons and know a win on Friday will secure a third straight Texas Derby title and an all-time fifth, tieing Houston’s record in the series.

Team News

Oscar Pareja may be without Matt Hedges, who is struggling with a hamstring strain, but has no other injury concerns and will be looking forward to playing on home soil once again.

Owen Coyle could be without Brad Davis again but has no other worries ahead of this key clash.

Key Points

FC Dallas’ last five: L/L/D/L/D

Houston Dynamo’s last five: W/L/D/W/L

Key Stat: There have been exactly five goals in each of the last four meetings between these two in all competitions, with Dallas winning all four matches.

Key Player: Fabian Castillo – Hard to overlook the rapid winger, especially after his devastating display in Houston earlier this season. Expect Castillo to cause problems again.

Score Prediction

FC Dallas 2-2 Houston Dynamo – Tough to separate the sides ahead of what is a huge game. Dallas have home advantage but their recent form makes it difficult to see them winning. Houston were blown away in the reverse fixture this term and will have learnt from their mistakes. Score draw.
