Who will make the greater impact in MLS – Gerrard or Lampard?

Ahead of the much anticipated arrival of Premier League legends, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard to Major League Soccer, we look at who will have the greater impact.

LA Galaxy have had a slow start to the season and the pressure is mounting on Bruce Arena. Sitting seventh in the Western Conference is not where they would expect to be and if their poor run of form continues, more will be expected of Gerrard when he links up with the squad in July.

New York City FC have won just one game in their first season in MLS. They have shown promising signs but it is clear that they will need time to gain invaluable experience. Sitting ninth in the Eastern Conference is not ideal but Jason Kreis and NYCFC fans have to have realistic expectations of how their first season can unfold.

So how do the two compare in key areas in the Premier League this season?

Apps Goals Assists Pass Accuracy Key Pass Shot Accuracy Tackles Won Average Mins/Game
Gerrard 28 8 1 85% 48 50% 35 77 mins
Lampard 31 5 1 85% 14 55% 15 30 mins

Lampard has played three more games than Gerrard but staggeringly averages just 30 minutes a game. The Manchester City midfielder has been used 22 times as a substitute, starting just nine. By stark contrast, Gerrard averages 77 minutes per game and has started 24 of his 28 appearances. Which implies that Gerrard will be the fitter of the two players when they join.

The two have had the same pass accuracy but Gerrard has made 34 more key passes (leading to a shot at goal) which is encouraging for the potential service he will supply to former teammate Robbie Keane. Lampard’s teammate to be, David Villa, has netted just two goals this season and is in desperate need of service.

These two have dominated the Premier League for years and there has been continual debate about who is the better player and that debate will now spread across the Atlantic. It is vital that both players hit the ground running and expectations of what they can bring are incredibly high.

Former Liverpool goal-machine: ‘Gerrard is the best I’ve played with’

Former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has claimed Steven Gerrard is the best player he has ever played with.

The statement from the 31-year-old Spaniard heaps an incredible amount of praise on Gerrard, as he was part of arguably one of the best World Cup and European Championship squads ever, playing with the likes of Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta.

“I would chose him above all if I had to have him in my team, if I had him behind me,” Torres told Marca. “Steven Gerrard is the best player I have played with throughout my career, therefore my ideal player would be very like him.”

Torres has played with some of the highest quality teams and players in Europe but Gerrard is his number one.

“It is very difficult to choose because I have had the luck to play with a lot of great footballers. For me, the best is and has been Gerrard,”

Gerrard’s Liverpool career is almost over as he braces himself for the move to MLS with LA Galaxy this summer but he could have a fairytale ending with his boyhood club if Liverpool make it through their FA Cup semifinal this weekend.

The former England captain could lead his side out at Wembley in the final, which falls on the same day as his birthday, in his final appearance for the club before heading off to his exciting new challenge where Galaxy fans eagerly await his arrival.

Do you agree with Fernando Torres that Steven Gerrard is the best played he has played with?
