Former United assistant to help Liverpool hero complete move to MLS – report

The Philadelphia Union could be on the verge of completing a summer move for former Liverpool defender John Arne Riise, with former Manchester United assistant Rene Meulensteen playing a key part in any move, according to Philadelphia CBS.

Meulensteen joined the Union back in November as a special consultant but is leaving the MLS side after just six months as a return to coaching in the Indian Super League could be in store.

Though his parting gift with the Union could see John Arne Riise complete an MLS switch, as the Dutchman has urged Philadelphia chiefs to consider a move for the 34-year-old left-back.

Riise spent the last season in Cyprus with APOEL FC but has decided not to extend his contract beyond this summer and so he will be looking for one more challenge before possibly retiring.

A move to MLS is said to be an “attractive” option for the Norwegian and the Union could follow up Meulensteen’s recommendation with an official approach to Riise.

If the former United coach returns to management quickly he could try and sign Riise after working with him in the Premier League with Fulham in 2014, but a move to MLS remains a real possibility.

Riise was a part of the Liverpool side that famously won the UEFA Champions League in 2005, grabbing the assist for the first of the three Reds comeback strikes.

He made a total of 339 appearances for Liverpool before joining AS Roma in 2008. Riise helped APOEL FC to a domestic double this season and could be arriving stateside for his football soon.

Would John Arne Riise be a good signing for the Philadelphia Union?
