LA Galaxy vs Portland Timbers: Preview

Major League Soccer is back and what a way for LA Galaxy and Portland Timbers to start their campaigns. Sunday’s clash pits top versus bottom from last years Western Conference final standings. LA will want to turn their fortunes around after a terrible season and Sigi Schmid has been busy reshaping the squad after his appointment last July so they will expect to be challenging for silverware again as soon as possible.

LA Galaxy have recycled their attacking options for want of a better phrase. The headline trade saw Ola Kamara make his way south to LA and homegrown talent Gyasi Zardes going the opposite way to Columbus. Chris Pontius has also joined, coming in from Philadelphia Union to support Kamara.

A playoff spot is the bare minimum expected this year for LA, as they look to return to winning ways. As the most successful franchise in league history, it is only a matter of time before they are back chasing the big prize, but questions remain over the depth of their squad in the build up to kickoff.

Portland have added young quality to a side that was in need of reinjection after a disappointing playoff campaign. Andy Polo is a versatile winger who will add pace to the Portland attack and Christhian Parades is a Paraguayan striker who will look to add support to the prolific Fanendo Adi.

The biggest talking point of the offseason for both Portland and MLS as a whole was the Darlington Nagbe move to Atlanta United. USMNT international, Nagbe was the marquee man and fan favorite in Portland and losing him is bound to have a effect on the Timbers.

Portland will want to maintain last years position but ultimately they will be hoping to replicate their MLS Cup winning campaign from 2015. There may be some teething problems however, with new manager Giovanni Savarese taking over from Caleb Porter following his surprise departure.

LA Galaxy vs Portland Timbers: Prediction

LA Galaxy 1-2 Portland Timbers: LA Galaxy have had a complete restructure following the dismal campaign of last season and Portland should bring confidence going into the new season following last year’s success. It would be unjust to suggest a goalless affair seeing as both teams have made attacking additions who will be out to impress. Portland just edge it for us in wha should be an entertaining clash.

Match Preview

LA Galaxy take on Portland Timbers in the late game on Sunday night with lots still at stake in the Western Conference for both sides.

They will cap off the penultimate week of the regular season at StubHub Center with the Galaxy’s hopes of lifting the Supporters’ Shield still alive, while Portland are battling to make the postseason.

LA Galaxy are three points of FC Dallas and the New York Red Bulls in the race for the Supporters’ Shield. Those two will have played before LA take to the field on Sunday night, though the Galaxy will still have a chance of glory regardless of their results.

Bruce Arena’s side have only lost once at home this season but their recent form hasn’t been great as they’ve only won one in their last five.

Portland don’t have much more to cheer about with regard to recent form either. The Timbers have only won two of their seven. Both of those have been away from Providence Park though, so Caleb Porter will be quietly confident of stunning the Galaxy here.

Portland sit outside of the playoffs on goal difference with two games to play. Seattle and San Jose sit in fifth and sixth, respectively both on 47 points along with Portland in seventh.

The Timbers need to win both of their last games to give themselves the best chance of making the top six but that will be no easy task as they have not won away at the Galaxy in their last seven trips.

Team News

LA Galaxy have a few injury concerns going into this one. Brian Perk and Bradford Jamieson remain out, while Todd Dunivant, Baggio Dunivant, Robbie Rogers and Giovani Dos Santos are doubts.

Portland will be without right-back Alvas Powell as he will serve a one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation. Ben Zemanski is still out, while Will Johnson remains doubtful with a leg problem.

Match Preview

LA Galaxy welcome Portland Timbers to StubHub Center on Wednesday night in one of the seven midweek MLS fixtures.

Galaxy come into the game off the back of their 5-1 destruction of Philadelphia Union on Saturday and so spirits will be high. But they cannot afford to think this will be an easy tie.

Bruce Arena will be pleased that his side showed they are still as deadly in front of goal, but will know they have been below par by their standards for most of this campaign.

LA have only won three of their last ten regular season games and are sitting fourth in the Western Conference, level on 25 points with Wednesday’s opponents Portland.

Portland Timbers won their fourth MLS game on the bounce last weekend as they beat Houston Dynamo 2-0 at home.

Caleb Porter‘s side have been in brilliant form and they now sit third in the Western Conference, having played two games less than their opponents.

They have scored seven in their last four games which is worrying for anyone they’re are coming up against, as they are scoring freely.

Goals have been coming from all over the pitch for Portland, which makes them all the more of a threat and they will be hoping to extend their winning run to five in LA.

Portland Timbers could be without up to four players too. Ben Zemanski is out, while Diego Valeri, Dairon Asprilla and Alvas Powell are all doubts.

Score Prediction

LA Galaxy 2-2 Portland Timbers – A tight game with neither side able to come out on top. This has the potential for goals but it’s too tough to split them.
