MLS Preview and Prediction: LA Galaxy vs FC Dallas

Competition: Major League Soccer – LA Galaxy vs. FC Dallas

Venue: StubHub Center – Sunday, October 23 – 16:00 ET (21:00 BST)

Match Odds: LA Galaxy 11/8 – Draw 85/40 – Dallas 2/1

Match Preview

LA Galaxy welcome FC Dallas to Stubhub Center on the final weekend of the 2016 regular season, with the away side looking to secure a first-ever Supporters’ Shield title.

LA Galaxy have won the Shield four times but are not in the running this season, although they have secured a playoff berth and will be targeting the MLS Cup in December.

The Galaxy can’t finish anywhere other than third place in the West, so they will have to take part in the Knockout Round of the playoffs no matter what the result of Sunday’s game. But they might well be out to spoil the Dallas party, as watching their opponents lift the shield on their own turf wouldn’t be ideal for the home fans.

Dallas only need a point to claim the Supporters’ Shield after last week’s comeback win over Seattle moved them back to the top of the West over Colorado.

FC Dallas booked their place in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals with a 5-2 win over Suchitepequez during the week but all focus will now be on trying to secure the Supporters’ Shield.

Oscar Pareja’s men have been in good form of late and should be able to get a result at LA on Sunday to finish top of the West for the second successive season.

A defeat in California would open the door for Colorado, who need to beat Houston at home on Sunday, with all ten games in MLS kicking off simultaneously.

Team News

LA Galaxy will be without Gyasi Zardes and Steven Gerrard, while Robbie Keane is listed as ‘questionable’. Bruce Arena may decide to rest a few players ahead of the playoffs but Jelle Van Damme is available again after serving his one-game suspension last weekend.

FC Dallas remain will be without playmaker Mauro Diaz for the rest of the year after he tore his achilles tendon, while Kellyn Acosta has also been ruled out for the foreseeable future. Zach Loyd is out with concussion but Maynor Figueroa is back in contention after serving a one-match ban.

Key Points

LA Galaxy’s last five: W/D/L/L/W

FC Dallas’ last five: L/D/D/W/W

Key Stat: LA Galaxy have won their last five home games against FC Dallas in MLS by an aggregate scoreline of 11-4.

Key Player: Giovani Dos Santos – The Mexican attacker is LA Galaxy’s leading scorer this season with 14 and has three in his last three at home. Expect him to cause the Dallas defence problems throughout Sunday’s contest.

Score Prediction

LA Galaxy 2-2 FC Dallas – The fact that LA can’t finish any higher of lower than third in the West means they may not take this game as seriously as they could perhaps have done. Their focus will be on the playoffs but entering the postseason with a strong platform is always important and so they won’t want to lose this. Dallas know they only need a point to claim the Shield and should be able to get that in what could be an exciting game.

MLS Preview and Prediction: LA Galaxy vs Seattle Sounders

Competition: Major League Soccer – LA Galaxy vs. Seattle Sounders

Venue: StubHub Center – Sunday, September 25 – 16:00 ET (21:00 BST)

Match Odds: LA Galaxy 5/6 – Draw 13/5 – Seattle 14/5

Match Preview

LA Galaxy take on Seattle Sounders in this weekend’s standout MLS fixture on Sunday afternoon, with both sides battling hard in the Western Conference as the playoffs edge ever closer.

LA are all but guaranteed a place in the postseason. They have only lost one of their last 16 games and look to be in good shape heading into the crucial stages of the campaign.

Bruce Arena’s men earned a 2-2 draw at Sporting Kansas City last weekend, with Landon Donovan netting a special equaliser off the bench. Morale is high in the LA camp but they have not won back-to-back games since July and that inconsistency is the only real criticism at this stage.

They are a real force at home and will be expected to brush Seattle aside on Sunday, but that won’t be as easy at it seems with the Sounders fighting for their lives.

A terrible season has been turned on its head in recent weeks for Seattle. The Rave Green have been in good form and are making a late surge towards the playoffs. They enter the weekend five points outside the top six in the West and know a win here would be massive.

Seattle Sounders vs Real Salt Lake - Dempsey, Morris and Lodeiro

Sporting KC currently occupy the last playoff spot in the West but they have played two more games than Seattle and so the Sounders have their fate in their own hands.

They have not won at LA since their debut MLS season in 2009 so leaving with three points on Sunday seems unlikely, but this should be a great contest between two exciting and attacking teams.

Team News

LA Galaxy remain without Gyasi Zardes, while Steven Gerrard is a doubt. Landon Donovan scored from the bench last week but is unlikely to be fit enough to start this one so another substitute appearances is expected.

Seattle will once again be without Clint Dempsey and Aaron Kovar, while Brad Evans is a doubt with a calf strain. Roman Torres looks to be back to full fitness and should continue alongside Chad Marshall in the heart of the Sounders defence.

Key Points

LA Galaxy’s last five: D/W/D/W/D

Seattle Sounders’ last five: W/D/L/D/W

Key Stat: Fortress – LA Galaxy are unbeaten in their last 15 home games in MLS.

Key Player: Nicolas Lodeiro – The Sounders best chance of success in Carson is to try and get Lodeiro on the ball as much as possible. The Uruguayan playmaker has been sensational since moving to MLS in the summer and now has three goals and seven assists in his eight appearances.

Score Prediction

LA Galaxy 1-1 Seattle Sounders – This is a huge game for both sides and is the standout MLS clash of the weekend. Neither can afford to lose this and so a tight contest is expected. Seattle have been producing when it matters over the last few weeks and will need to be at their best to take anything away from StubHub Center on Sunday. Both sides should score, but we see this one ending all square.

MLS Preview and Prediction: LA Galaxy vs Orlando City

Competition: Major League Soccer – LA Galaxy vs. Orlando City

Venue: StubHub Center – Saturday, September 10 – 19:00 ET (00:00 BST)

Match Odds: LA Galaxy 4/7 – Draw 3/1 – Orlando 4/1

Match Preview

LA Galaxy host Orlando City in what should be an exciting battle on Sunday night as both sides are fighting hard for different goals in either conference.

Orlando will be looking to repeat the result from last year’s meeting between the two sides, in which the Lions ran out 4-0 winners at home. A similar result this weekend would be an enormous statement and would further boost their playoff push.

City only have a two-point cushion over Eastern Conference rivals DC United as they look to make the postseason for the first time, so a win here would be massive. Although no side has yet won at StubHub Center this season so it’s a massive ask for the Lions.

New York Red Bulls vs Orlando City

They might still be well in the playoff picture, but it has been another average season for Orlando, having struggled along before replacing manager Adrian Heath with Jason Kreis. Things look to be slowly improving but they must now make the top six to take a step forward as a franchise.

LA Galaxy are the favourites though and the home fans will be incredibly excited following the huge announcement in the week that MLS and USMNT legend Landon Donovan is back on the team, coming out of retirement to try and help the Galaxy win a sixth MLS Cup title.

The Galaxy are second in the West going into the weekend, but are seven points behind FC Dallas, who are seemingly running away with both the Western Conference title and the Supporters’ Shield. A second-place finish would leave LA in a great position to head into the post-season, but they won’t have given up on the Western title just yet.

The injury list will worry LA at the moment with key figures on the sidelines, so it will be interesting to see if they can maintain performances and solidify a top two finish in the West. They battled well to draw 3-3 at Real Salt Lake on Wednesday and will be out to avenge last year’s humiliating defeat in Orlando on Sunday.

Team News

Orlando City are without Pedro Ribeiro who has a back injury, while Cristian Higuita has a hamstring injury troubling him. Harrison Heath is a major doubt but could make the squad.

LA Galaxy are without four first team members. Jelle Van Damme has a MCL sprain, Gyasi Zardes has a broken metatarsal, Steven Gerrard has a hamstring injury and Robbie Keane has an undisclosed injury and is set to miss out again.

Key Points

Orlando City’s last five: D/D/L/W/W

LA Galaxy’s last five: L/D/D/W/D

Key Stat: Fortress – LA Galaxy are still unbeaten in MLS this season, winning seven and drawing seven of their 14 games at StubHub Center so far.

Key Player: Giovani Dos Santos – The Mexican forward has been making waves in the past few weeks and we expect him to have a big impact once again for the Galaxy. There is added pressure on Dos Santos, with Zardes out for the season.

Score Prediction

LA Galaxy 2-2 Orlando City – Both sides haven’t stopped scoring recently as they have 11 combined goals in their last two fixtures. We cannot pick a winner so a score draw is expected on Sunday night – a result that would be better for Orlando than the home side.

MLS Preview and Prediction: Real Salt Lake vs LA Galaxy

RCompetition: Major League Soccer – Real Salt Lake vs. LA Galaxy

Venue: Rio Tinto Stadium – Wednesday, September 7 – 21:30 ET (02:30 BST)

Match Odds: RSL 21/20 – Draw 23/10 – LA Galaxy 12/5

Match Preview

Real Salt Lake host LA Galaxy in a huge Western Conference battle between two long-standing MLS rivals on Wednesday night.

The Playoff battle is really heating up now, with both these sides set to be left with just six to play following Wednesday’s battle at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Real Salt Lake come into the game fresh after not playing at the weekend. They are fourth in the West but are tied on points with both Colorado and LA Galaxy, who fill the two spots above them.

Seattle Sounders vs Real Salt Lake - Joao Plata Celebrates

A midweek win here would leave RSL just five points behind Supporters’ Shield leaders FC Dallas so it’s a huge game for the home side. They have beaten Dallas and Colorado at home in their last two games and could complete an impressive hat-trick of victories with three points here.

LA Galaxy arrive at RSL off the back of their first win in seven on Saturday. Bruce Arena’s side emerged from a tricky spell with a 2-1 home win against Vancouver, thanks to a pair of fine goals from Baggio Husidic and Giovani Dos Santos.

Embed from Getty Images

The return of Robbie Keane will boost confidence further, though the Galaxy have not won away at RSL since 2013 and have not scored at Rio Tinto in their last four visits.

Their away form has been better this season than it was during the 2015 campaign, but they have not managed to seal a victory in their last three road games.

Team News

Real Salt Lake will be without Emery Welshman and Aaron Maund once again, while Sunday Stephen remains a doubt. Omar Holness and Kyle Beckerman are away on international duty and won’t return in time to play on Wednesday night.

LA Galaxy have a concerning injury list to worry about as the postseason edges ever closer. Gyasi Zardes is out for the season, while Jelle Van Damme and Steven Gerrard remain sidelined, so the absence of those three leaves Bruce Arena short-staffed in key areas. Robbie Keane should be back after retiring from international duty in last week’s Ireland game against Oman.

Key Points

Real Salt Lake’s last five: L/W/L/W/W

LA Galaxy’s last five: D/L/D/D/W

Key Stat: Real Salt Lake are unbeaten in seven home games against LA Galaxy, winning four of those games, including each of the last two meetings at Rio Tinto.

Key Player: Yura Movsisyan – The Armenian striker scored twice in RSL’s 2-1 win over Colorado last time out and now has nine goals for the season. The Designated Player looks to be in good form and will be hoping to hurt the Galaxy backline here.

Embed from Getty Images

Score Prediction

Real Salt Lake 2-1 LA Galaxy – RSL look to have hit a strong run of a form at the best possible time and are poised to win a third-straight league game for the second time this season as they look to move into second in the West. The home support gives them a major advantage, as well as the fact LA have a trio of key absentees. There should be goals here, but RSL ultimately look in better shape to edge this.

MLS Preview and Prediction: LA Galaxy vs Columbus Crew

Competition: Major League Soccer – LA Galaxy vs. Columbus Crew

Venue: StubHub Center – Saturday, September 3 – 22:30 ET (03:30 BST)

Match Odds: LA Galaxy 3/4 – Draw 13/5 – Columbus Crew 100/30

Match Preview

LA Galaxy host Columbus Crew on Saturday night in a battle between two sides that need to get a result without a number of first-team regulars.

The Galaxy are in a poor run of form, going winless through their last six games. They’ve drawn five of those, playing out a 0-0 draw with Vancouver last Saturday.

Bruce Arena has lost Gyasi Zardes for the season and won’t be able to call upon the services of Robbie Keane or Steven Gerrard this weekend, so squad depth is really being tested.

LA are eight points behind FC Dallas at the top of the West but do have a game in hand, so a win this weekend would give them a real boost.

Columbus have had a terrible season to this point. It’s incredible to think that virtually the same group of players reached the MLS Cup final last term.

The Crew do come into this one on a high after ended their seven-game home winless streak with a 2-0 win over San Jose last weekend. Justin Meram scored one and assisted the other in that victory but he is away on international duty this week.

Photo: @ColumbusCrewSC

Photo: @ColumbusCrewSC

Columbus are six points off the playoff places in the East and need to rally if they are to make the postseason. But they have the second-worst away form in MLS this term, so taking anything away from StubHub on Saturday would have to be seen as a great result.

Last season’s only meeting ended in a 1-1 draw in Columbus. LA Galaxy have won five of the last eight meetings between the teams, with two draws. The only win for the Black and Yellow in that time came two years ago.

Team News

LA Galaxy will be without defender Jelle Van Damme as he is sidelined with a knee sprain, while Gyasi Zardes is out for the season with a broken metatarsal. Steven Gerrard is also sidelined as he is struggling with a hamstring problem. Robbie Keane played his final Republic of Ireland friendly on Wednesday and is unlikely to be back in time to play on Saturday night.

Columbus Crew have a long injury list to worry about with Matt Pacifici and Ben Swanson both ruled out, while Gaston Sauro, Waylon Francis, Wil Trapp and Conor Casey are all doubts. On top of that, Tony Tchani, Harrison Afful, Justin Meram and Rodrigo Saravia are all away on international duty.

Key Points

LA Galaxy’s last five: D/D/L/D/D

Columbus Crew’s last five: L/D/W/L/W

Key Stat: LA Galaxy is unbeaten in five-straight home games against Columbus. The Crew have not won away at Saturday’s opponents since June 2007.

Key Player: Giovani Dos Santos – LA have a number of key men out so the pressure will be on Giovani Dos Santos to deliver for the home side here. He only has two goals in his last ten MLS games so he needs to start producing more regularly if LA are to make a surge for the Western Conference title over the final few weeks.

Giovani dos Santos, MLS: NYCFC vs. LA Galaxy

Score Prediction

LA Galaxy 1-1 Columbus Crew – Both sides are very far from being full strength as a result of injuries and international call-ups so this is a tough one to call. LA Galaxy are strong at home and still haven’t lost at home all season. That’s unlikely to change against a Crew side that has only won one of their 11 away games this term. Score draw.

Some of the biggest stars in Major League Soccer went head-to-head on Saturday afternoon as New York City FC took on LA Galaxy at Yankee Stadium.

It was NYCFC who emerged victorious, thanks to an early David Villa goal, helping them to a 1-0 win to remain top of the Eastern Conference in just their second MLS season.

LA Galaxy will be disappointed with their performance, suffering a first defeat in ten regular season outings this weekend. They fell to fourth in the West and are seven points off Dallas in first place.

MLS Preview and Prediction: New York City FC vs LA Galaxy

Competition: Major League Soccer – New York City FC vs. LA Galaxy

Venue: Yankee Stadium – Saturday, August 20 – 15:30 ET (20:30 BST)

Match Odds: NYCFC 13/10 – Draw 9/4 – LA Galaxy 2/1

Match Preview

New York City FC welcome LA Galaxy to Yankee Stadium for the first time in MLS on Saturday evening in what should be an excellent clash between two high-flying teams.

NYCFC remain top of the Eastern Conference ahead of Week 24’s action. They only have a one-point leader over Toronto though and know they must continue to win matches if they are to stay top come the end of the regular season.

Patrick Vieira’s men had to settle for a 3-3 draw in Columbus last week after late drama saw both teams score in the 90th minute. That result took their unbeaten run to three ahead of Saturday’s huge game.

Frank Lampard NYCFC, MLS: New York City FC vs. Colorado Rapids

City have won their last three home games on the spin – their best run of home form since entering the league – so LA Galaxy know they are in for a real test at Yankee Stadium on Saturday.

Bruce Arena’s men have been fairly poor of late, drawing their last three games, but remaining unbeaten is the key for the Western Conference title chasers, who sit seven points behind leaders Dallas with two games in hand.

Earning points without playing well is something all title-winning sides have to do, but LA know they need to step up if they are to leave New York with at least a point here.

The boost for the visitors is that star striker Robbie Keane should be fit to return to the side, meaning both sides should have all their Designated Players on the field.

The Galaxy beat NYCFC 5-1 at StubHub Center in last season’s clash between the two sides and so the hosts will undoubtedly be out for revenge here.

Team News

New York City FC have just two injury worries ahead of Saturday’s clash. Connor Brandt and Shannon Gomez remain sidelined, so neither will take part here. Jack Harrison may come back into the side after coming off the bench at Columbus last weekend.

LA Galaxy will be without goalkeeper Brian Rowe, who is out with a head injury picked up last weekend, while Robbie Rogers remains a doubt. Robbie Keane is expected to be passed fit in time for Saturday’s contest, with Emmanuel Boateng likely to drop out if the Irishman does returning to the starting lineup.

Key Points

New York City’s last five: W/L/W/D/D

LA Galaxy’s last five: W/W/D/D/D

Key Stat: LA Galaxy have come from behind to earn draws in each of their last three MLS matches.

Key Player: Frank Lampard – The NYCFC midfielder has really found form this summer, netting nine goals in his last ten MLS appearances. He will be relishing the prospect of lining up opposite Steven Gerrard once again on Saturday and will be hoping he can guide the home side to three important points.

Frank Lampard, MLS: New York City FC vs. Colorado Rapids

Score Prediction

NYCFC 2-2 LA Galaxy – New York City FC are the favourites ahead of this huge game, but both teams have lacked a killer instinct in recent weeks, and that could cost them both again here. LA have drawn three in a row and would probably settle for a fourth on the spin here, in what is a tricky trip to Yankee Stadium. NYCFC need to try and take this game by the scruff of the neck, but they showed their frailties by throwing away a stoppage time lead in Columbus last weekend and those weaknesses could cost them a win here.

Gallery: Exclusive photos from LA Galaxy’s 2-1 win in Portland

LA Galaxy kept their strong run of form going as they beat Portland Timbers 2-1 at Providence Park on Saturday night to remain in the hunt for the Western Conference title.

The Galaxy raced into an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Robbie Keane and Gyasi Zardes inside the first 11 minutes and instantly left Portland with it all to do.

The Timbers rallied throughout the remainder of the game, firing twice as many shots as LA over the course of the game but Zarek Valentin’s strike on the stroke of halftime wasn’t enough to prevent defeat for the hosts.

The Galaxy remain in third in the West, six points off Dallas at the top. Portland fell out of the playoff spots and into seventh with the defeat.

Match Preview

Portland Timbers face LA Galaxy in one of the weekend’s standout MLS fixtures on Saturday evening as two of the league’s in-form sides go head-to-head at Providence Park.

Portland have been in solid form of late, going unbeaten in nine games. They saw off their arch rivals Seattle on Sunday and will be in fine spirits off the back of that result.

The Timbers enter the match in sixth place in the West and will be looking to remain unbeaten to keep their playoff hopes intact, with 12 games left to play after the weekend.

Portland Timbers vs Seattle Sounders - Portland Celebrate

They have won four of their last five at home and will look to put a strong LA Galaxy side to the sword here as they look to continue climbing the table.

However, the Galaxy are a side high in confidence and won’t be expecting to leave Portland empty-handed come the end of play on Saturday.

Bruce Arena’s men have won three in a row and are making a real charge at the title. They are eight points behind league leaders Dallas and know they must win as many games as possible to stand a chance of finishing in front of the Texans.

Winning games away from home has proven tough for LA over the last two seasons, but they did beat Seattle 1-0 on the road two weeks ago and will be hoping for another successful trip to the north-west here.

This will be the second clash between the pair this term. The reverse fixture ended 1-1 at StubHub Center back in April. The Galaxy have not won in Portland in four years.

Team News

Portland have just the one injury concern to worry about heading into the weekend as Darren Mattocks is ruled out with a hamstring injury. Caleb Porter has had to put up with a lot of injuries this term but his squad is looking healthy at a key part of the campaign. Alvas Powell is one booking away from suspension and needs to watch his step.

LA Galaxy will remain without Robbie Rogers for this one, while Ashley Cole is also unlikely to be available for selection again after sitting out with a hamstring problem for a couple of weeks. Ariel Lassiter is a doubt and Steven Gerrard may also miss this one after failing to train outside this week.

Key Points

Portland Timbers’ form: W/D/D/D/W

LA Galaxy’s form: D/D/W/W/W

Key Stat: Form – Portland are unbeaten in their last nine MLS matches (W4 D5).

Key Player: Diego Valeri – Portland will need their star players to be at their best if they are to get past a strong LA side on Saturday. They will look to Valeri for inspiration yet again. He bagged two goals in the win over Seattle last time out and will hope to build on that with another fine performance here.

Portland Timbers vs Seattle Sounders - Valeri Celebrates

Score Prediction

Portland Timbers 2-2 LA Galaxy – Goals are expected on Saturday in a game between two in-form sides looking to keep momentum building as the playoff edge ever closer. LA have won three on the spin but may find it tough to break down a Portland side that hasn’t lost in two months. A score draw looks likely, though this should be entertaining.

MLS Preview and Prediction: LA Galaxy vs Houston Dynamo

Competition: Major League Soccer – LA Galaxy vs. Houston Dynamo

Venue: StubHub Center – Friday, July 15 – 23:00 ET (04:00 BST)

Match Odds: LA Galaxy 4/7 – Draw 3/1 – Houston 5/1

Match Preview

LA Galaxy host Houston Dynamo in this week’s Friday night MLS clash between two sides at opposite ends of the Western Conference.

The Galaxy enter Friday’s match looking for a third-straight win for the first time this season. They saw off the Seattle Sounders 1-0 on Saturday to win just their second away game of the season.

That result will have boosted confidence in Bruce Arena’s squad and the players will now have their eyes fixed on the top of the Western Conference table with 16 games to go.

Embed from Getty Images

LA are sitting eight points behind Supporters’ Shield leaders, FC Dallas, but are renowned for their late-season surges and will believe they can still catch the long-time leaders.

Houston are facing a somewhat different battle, as they are trying to stay off the bottom of the conference table after another below-par campaign has left them set for another without playoff football.

There is, of course, a long way to go and so the Dynamo are not down and out just yet. However, they have picked up just four wins all season and don’t look poised to improve dramatically enough to close the gap to the top six.

They are ten points off the playoff spots in the West and have the third-worst points-per-game ratio in Major League Soccer. Seattle’s win on Wednesday moved Houston back to the bottom of the West and they look in real trouble.

Embed from Getty Images

They drew 0-0 away at Orlando on Saturday, earning their first road clean sheet of the season. Although repeating that feat at StubHub seems highly unlikely.

LA beat Houston 4-1 in the reverse fixture at BBVA Compass Stadium back in April, despite going a goal down early on and will fancy their chances of completing a first league double over the Dynamo since the 2010 season.

Team News

LA Galaxy will be without widemen Robbie Rogers and Ashley Cole, who are both injured, while Ariel Lassiter is a doubt. Nigel De Jong will serve an extra game’s suspension for his red card picked up against Vancouver two weeks ago. Galaxy defender Daniel Steres is one booking away from suspension and needs to watch his step.

Houston’s only injury worry is DaMarcus Beasley, who is set to be out for the rest of the month following minor knee surgery. Alex is one booking away from suspension.

Key Points

LA Galaxy’s last five: L/D/D/W/W

Houston Dynamo’s last five: D/D/L/W/D

Key Stat: Houston have not won any of their last 18 away games in MLS. Their last away win came on July 10, 2015 at San Jose.

Key Player: Robbie Keane – The Galaxy frontman has returned from Euro 2016 in great form, by scoring in back-to-back games. He now has six in eight appearances for the season and will expect to add to his tally in front of the home crowd on Friday evening.

Embed from Getty Images

Score Prediction

LA Galaxy 3-0 Houston Dynamo – The Dynamo look set for another convincing defeat at the hands of the Galaxy here. LA are a real force at home and have not lost in front of their own fans all season. The Dynamo, meanwhile, have only won one of their last seven and haven’t won away from home in over a year now. The Galaxy to find their scoring boots and put Houston to the sword.
