Sporting Kansas City hoping to land Arsenal target for free – report

Sporting Kansas City are interested in signing Lazio midfielder Cristian Ledesma when his contract expires at the end of the month, according to reports out of Italy.

The 32-year-old holding midfielder was being linked with a move to the Premier League with Arsenal in January after his agent revealed Gunners scouts had been watching him in Italy.

And although Arsene Wenger never made an official move, he could be waiting to try and sign him on a free transfer when the window opens next month.

If that is the case, he will face competition from Sporting KC as the MLS club are looking to lure Ledesma stateside with a Designated Player contract.

Graham Zusi and Matt Besler are both DP’s, leaving SKC with one slot available and Ledesma could be the man to fill it.

Southampton, New York Red Bulls and Montreal Impact have also previously been linked with Ledesma as a real battle to secure his services looks set to ensue.

The Argentine midfielder has been with Lazio for nine years, making over 300 appearances for the Serie A outfit and netting 14 goals with 41 assists.

He made just 13 league appearances this season though as his services are no longer needed with the Biancocelesti and MLS could be his next destination.

Would Cristian Ledesma be a good signing for Sporting Kansas City? Will Arsenal try to sign him?

Lazio’s Cristian Ledesma targeted by Southampton and two MLS clubs

Lazio midfielder Cristian Ledesma is being tracked by Southampton, Montreal Impact and the New York Red Bulls, according to Italian publication Gazzetta Dello Sport.

Ledesma is out of contract with the Serie A club in the summer and he is not set to renew his current deal with the team he has been with for the past nine seasons.

He will therefore be able to move on for free and can negotiate a pre-contract agreement with any interested parties now.

Premier League club Southampton are reportedly interested in the Argentine-born Italian international but the Montreal Impact and the New York Red Bulls have both made approaches for the 32-year-old midfield veteran.

Fiorentina and Bologna are also linked as Ledesma looks to be a player in demand.

He has only made ten appearances in all competitions for Lazio this season, scoring one goal and adding one assist but he has made 312 total appearances for the Rome-based club since joining from Lecce in 2006.

A move to MLS looks to be a real option and Montreal will hope that their history of capturing Italians from Serie A could help them to lure Ledesma to Canada.

The Impact brought Alessandro Nesta and Marco Di Vaio to Major League Soccer in 2012 and would be willing to bolster their midfield with the addition of Ledesma this summer.

But the New York Red Bulls are also be keen, having lost Tim Cahill, and they have money to spend as well as two Designated Player slots to fill following the departures of Cahill and Thierry Henry this offseason.

Ledesma is thought to be keen on a new challenge outside of Italy and he could well be the latest name to join MLS in 2015, though interest from Southampton could be a key factor.
