2018 MLS All-Star Game: MLS All-Stars vs Juventus

Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta – Wednesday, August 1st 2018 – 19:30 ET (00:30 BST)

UK TV Coverage: Live on Sky Sports Main Event

MLS All-Stars vs Juventus: Preview

The best in MLS will take on Italy’s finest club side in the 2018 MLS All-Star Game in Atlanta on Wednesday. This will be the 23rd annual All-Star game and could break the attendance record with a full house expected at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The current All-Star attendance record is 70,728, set back in 2010 when fans packed into Houston’s Reliant Stadium to watch the MLS All-Stars take on Manchester United.

The MLS All-Stars are looking to win the game for the first time in three years after losing on penalties to Real Madrid this time last year. Prior to that, they fell 2-1 to Arsenal. The All-Stars last won the game in 2015, beating Spurs 2-1 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

This year’s All-Star team is stacked with attacking talent, even after Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Villa have had to pull out. The likes of Atlanta’s own Josef Martinez, Miguel Almiron and Ezequiel Barco will look to link up with fellow attackers Carlos Vela, Bradley Wright-Phillips and former Juventus star Sebastian Giovinco.

Head coach Tata Martino will set his side up to attack Juventus – a team renowned for their defensive prowess The Bianconeri have added a monumental attacking threat of their own this summer in Cristiano Ronaldo but the 33-year-old will not be ready to make his debut on Wednesday.

Juve are busy preparing for the 2018/19 Serie A season as they will look to retain their league title for the eighth successive year. They are also the reigning Coppa Italia champions and only the second Serie A side to ever take on the All-Stars, following AS Roma in 2013 – a game the All-Stars lost 3-1.

This will be the third of four Juventus preseason games in the United States. They have played two of their three International Champions Cup matches, beating Bayern Munich 2-0 before drawing 1-1 with Benfica, a game they won 4-2 on penalties. They will round off their ICC games when they face Real Madrid on Saturday but all focus is on the All-Star game ahead of that.

Ibrahimovic pulled out of the All-Star game on Sunday night after scoring his first hat-trick for LA Galaxy. That was as a result of playing three matches in a week. David Villa also misses out with injury. Minnesota United’s Darwin Quintero and New York Red Bulls’ Tyler Adams are the replacements.

MLS All-Stars vs Juventus: Key Stats

MLS All-Stars’ last five: L/L/W/L/D

Juventus’ preseason form: W/D

Key stat: Both sides have scored in each of the past six MLS All-Star games. There have been 29 goals scored in the past eight editions of the match – an average of 3.6 per game.

MLS All-Stars vs Juventus: Prediction

MLS All-Stars 3-2 Juventus: This has all the makings of being a spectacle. The All-Stars have an abundance of attacking talent and will have to set up to attack the Italian giants. However, that could lead to an open game and Juventus have more than enough weapons themselves to unleash. Either way, this should be full of goals and we think the All-Stars have enough to edge it. Don’t be surprised to see former Juve man Giovinco score the decisive goal…

MLS All-Stars vs Real Madrid: Preview and Prediction

2017 MLS All-Star Game: MLS All-Stars vs Real Madrid

Soldier Field, Chicago – Wednesday, August 2nd – 20:30 ET (01:30 BST)

Match Odds: MLS All-Stars 21/5 – Draw 3/1 – Real Madrid 7/10

MLS All-Stars vs Real Madrid: Preview

The 2017 MLS-All Stars take on Real Madrid on Wednesday night in the 22nd annual MLS All-Star game. North America’s finest soccer talents will have to try and topple the current European champions, with the sides clashing at Soldier Field in Chicago.

Real Madrid’s outlook

It’s the first time the best of MLS will come up against Spanish opponents, and Real Madrid arrive as the best club side in world football. That’s proven by the fact they’ve won back-to-back Champions League titles. They also won their first La Liga title in five years in 2016/17. They became the first side to score in every La Liga game on their way to glory.

Wednesday’s game will be Real Madrid’s final preseason warmup before they return to competitive action. Zinedine Zidane’s side face Manchester United in the UEFA Super Cup next Tuesday. They then face Barcelona over two legs for the Spanish Super Cup before the new La Liga season begins on August 20.

The haven’t had the best of summers, in terms of preseason results. They failed to win any of their three International Champions Cup matches. A penalty shootout loss to Manchester United in Santa Clara was followed by a 4-1 defeat to Manchester City in Los Angeles. They then fell 3-2 to Barcelona in Miami before flying to Chicago to prepare for the All-Star game.

MLS All-Stars outlook

The MLS All-Stars lost their first game since 2013 last year. They fell 2-1 to Arsenal in San Jose and will want to bounce back with a win against the Spanish giants here.

Major League Soccer is continuing to improve with every season. The quality of the league gets better with each season. The All-Star game is the best chance for the league to showcase that to the world.

Chicago Fire head coach Veljko Paunovic will lead the star-studded MLS All-Stars this year. He is enjoying a fine season in charge of Chicago. But he now has to try and beat the world’s best team with a squad of players that have had just three days to prepare for the game together.

Ultimately, this is an exhibition game. But the stars of MLS will want to show the world how far the league has come. The All-Stars are expected to lose. But a win would further highlight the giant strides being made across the Atlantic.

MLS All-Stars vs Real Madrid: Team News

Veljko Paunovic has a mix of world-renowned talent, US national team heroes and young stars to represent the best of MLS. Commissioner Don Garber has picked Dom Dwyer and Kellyn Acosta to represent the All-Stars, and they form part of a strong 24-man squad. Former Real Madrid galactico Kaka has never played against Real Madrid, so Wednesday’s match will be a special occasion for him. David Villa was a long-time rival to Real Madrid during his time with Valencia, Atletico and Barcelona. He has played 28 games against Real – more than against any other club in world football. Bastian Schweinsteiger will captain the All-Stars.

Position MLS All-Stars Squad
Goalkeepers Frei, Howard
Defenders Beasley, Garza, Grana, Hedges, Kappelhof, Parkhurst, Van Damme, Zusi
Midfielders Acosta, Almiron, Bradley, Dos Santos, Kaka, McCarty, Piatti, Schweinsteiger, Valeri
Forwards Altidore, Dwyer, Giovinco, Nikolic, Villa

Real Madrid won’t be able to call on star man Cristiano Ronaldo. The current Ballon d’Or holder hasn’t been apart of the team’s preseason tour. That’s because of his participation in the Confederations Cup with Portugal. However, the European champions still have some of the world’s finest talents to call on. The likes of Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema are all set to play at Soldier Field on Wednesday. Several young players have been used by Zidane on the tour and they will be expected to see some action in the later stages of the match.

Position Real Madrid Squad
Goalkeepers Navas, Casilla, Yanez, L. Zidane
Defenders Carvajal, Ramos, Varane, Nacho, Marcelo, Theo Hernandez, Quezada, Tejero, Achraf, Manu
Midfielders Kroos, Casemiro, Modric, Isco, Ceballos, Kovacic, Oscar, Franchu
Forwards Benzema, Bale, Vazquez, Gomez, Mayoral

MLS All-Stars vs Real Madrid: Key Points

MLS All-Stars last five games: W/L/W/W/L

Real Madrid’s last games: W/W/D/L/L

Key Stat: The MLS All-Stars have scored in 11 of their 12 All-Star games against European opponents since the format was introduced in 2005. The only year in which they failed to score was 2011 in a 4-0 loss to Manchester United.

Key Player: Sebastian Giovinco – Picking one player as the key man in a game that will be littered with stars is almost impossible. But Giovinco comes into the game having set an MLS record with his 10th free-kick goal in Sunday’s 4-0 win over NYCFC. That was also his 50th MLS goal. He has set Major League Soccer alight since moving to Toronto in 2015. If anyone is likely to tear the Madrid defence apart it’s The Atomic Ant.

MLS All-Stars vs Real Madrid: Prediction

MLS All-Stars 2-1 Real Madrid – The absence of Ronaldo will obviously be huge for Real Madrid. He’s their best player and is arguably the best in the world. But Real Madrid are still incredible strong without him. The worry for the visitors is that they have been in poor form on their US tour this summer. The All-Stars will look to take advantage of that. They are in the middle of the MLS season, meaning they are at optimum fitness. They also have a huge array of talent to call on. Don’t be surprised to see them beat Los Blancos on Wednesday night.

Live Coverage: Sky Sports 2 HD in the UK – ESPN in the USA.

Match Preview

The 2016 MLS All-Star game takes place on Thursday night as the best in MLS take on Premier League side Arsenal at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California.

The All-Star game has become a real showpiece event for Major League Soccer and also provides a really tough preseason test for some of the top sides in Europe.

This year, Arsenal will try and beat the MLS All-Stars in what is their first ever appearance in the game. The Gunners are the eighth Premier League side to take on Major League Soccer’s finest talent.

Last season’s All-Star game saw the MLS All-Stars beat Tottenham 2-1 in Colorado, thanks to early goals from Kaka and David Villa. Both of those stars are against in the squad this year, along with several other global stars.

San Jose Earthquakes head coach Dominic Kinnear will take control of the All-Stars for Thursday’s game – the second time he has been tasked with the job having done so in 2009 when MLS lost on penalties to Everton.

The All-Stars are looking for a third-straight win, following 2-1 victories over Bayern Munich and Spurs over the past two campaigns and will now be fully focused on adding Arsenal to that list.

Arsene Wenger’s men have only played one preseason game so far this year, drawing 1-1 away at Lens and are up for a real test against MLS stars at peak fitness in the middle of their domestic season.

The Gunners’ last trip to the USA ended in defeat as the New York Red Bulls sealed a 1-0 friendly win in July 2014 and they will be hoping for more success this time around.

Arsenal don’t have first-team stars such as Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny as they are all still recovering from international tournaments, but there is still a talented squad at Wenger’s disposal for Thursday’s clash.

Arsenal’s last five preseason games: L/W/W/W/W

Key Stat: The MLS All-Stars have not kept a clean sheet in any of the last eight games, conceding a total of 19 goals over the last eight years.

Score Prediction

MLS All-Stars 3-2 Arsenal – Goals are to be expected on Thursday night in what should be a memorable contest. Arsenal are not at full strength but do have a strong enough squad to expect to win this game. However, the best in MLS have proven to be stiff opponents over the last two seasons, beating Bayern Munich and Tottenham. A third-straight All-Star win is expected here.

Arsenal to become eighth British club to face MLS All-Stars

English Premier League giants Arsenal have officially been announced as the 2016 MLS All-Star opponents and will become the eighth British club to face off against the best in MLS when they take to the field on July 28 at San Jose Earthquakes’ Avaya Stadium.

The Gunners will continue the tradition of the MLS All-Stars facing off against Premier League opposition, with Fulham, West Ham, Chelsea, Everton and Manchester United all previously playing in the game.

Celtic also played in the showpiece match back in 2007, while Arsenal’s fierce rivals Tottenham took on the best in MLS last year, coming out as the losers thanks to goals from Kaka and David Villa in a 2-1 win for the All-Stars.

With more talent arriving in MLS every year, the All-Stars should only get stronger and that will mean Arsenal are set for a stiff preseason test.

The MLS All-Stars have beaten Bayern Munich and Tottenham over the last two years and would love to make it three on the bounce by beating the Gunners.

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, believes the game will serve them well as they prepare for the 2016/17 season. As well as playing the All-Star game in San Jose, Arsenal will play Mexican side Chivas de Guadalajara at LA Galaxy’s StubHub Center on July 31.

“Preseason is a critically important time for us and we are delighted to be coming to San Jose and Los Angeles to participate in the 2016 MLS All-Star Game and to play Chivas,” Wenger said in a statement.

“We have tremendous support across America and enjoyed our visit to New York in the summer of 2014 when we played the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena. We are all looking forward to this summer’s trip as we prepare for our 2016-2017 season.”

Who do you think will win the 2016 MLS All-Star game?

Preview and Prediction: MLS All-Stars vs Tottenham Hotspur

Competition: 2015 MLS All-Star Game – MLS All-Stars vs. Tottenham Hotspur

Venue: Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, Colorado – Wednesday, July 29 – 21:00 ET (02:00 BST)

Match Odds: MLS All-Stars 13/10 – Draw 12/5 – Spurs 6/4

Match Preview

The 2015 AT&T MLS All-Star Game will see the best in MLS take on Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in what should be a great game at the Colorado Rapids’ Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Wednesday night.

This will be the 11th time the best players in MLS have lined up against a club from Europe and Spurs will be the sixth Premier League club to take part in the match in what is their first All-Star appearance.

Tottenham have strong links across the USA with the likes of Kasey Keller, Clint Dempsey, Brad Friedel and current squad member DeAndre Yedlin all plying their trade in England for the Lilywhites, so the club will see Wednesday’s match as another fantastic opportunity to expand their fanbase stateside.

Mauricio Pochettino will watch his side face their toughest preseason test so far as the 2015 League Cup runners-up have only played low-key friendlies behind closed doors so far.

The MLS All-Stars beat Bayern Munich 2-1 last year as they put in a remarkable performance against the German giants and Spurs will be hoping to prevent the All-Stars from winning back-to-back games for the first time since 2008.

Embed from Getty Images

The All-Stars have a 4-2-1 record against Chelsea, Everton, Fulham, Manchester United and West Ham in past games and know they have a great chance in beating Spurs as they have what is probably the strongest ever MLS squad.

Stars such as Sebastian Giovinco, Laurent Ciman, Kaka and David Villa have all joined MLS this season and will make their All-Star debuts on Wednesday night alongside regular stars such as Clint Dempsey, Omar Gonzalez and Nick Rimando.

The MLS All-Star Games always guarantee goals and entertainment throughout. That should be no different on Wednesday as there will be a wealth of attacking talent on display from both sides.

Spurs need to impress as their Premier League opener against Manchester United will be just 10 days away after the All-Star game ends, with a trip to Germany to face Real Madrid and then Bayern Munich or AC Milan in the Audi Cup taking place next week.

Team News

This year’s MLS All-Star squad is probably the strongest ever seen. World stars such as Kaka, David Villa and Clint Dempsey will all look to inspire the best in MLS to victory against Spurs on Wednesday night. Dempsey will be facing his former club and will be looking to shine. MLS leading goalscorers Sebastian Giovinco and Kei Kamara are also included as Pablo Mastroeni has a wealth of attacking talent to choose from. Frank Lampard and Obafemi Martins were selected but miss out through injury, with Dax McCarty replacing Lampard in a midfield slot. While Chris Tierney, Michael Bradley, Steven Gerrard and Robbie Keane have all pulled out late though injury. Gyasi Zardes, Juninho, Waylon Francis, Ethan Finlay and Sam Cronin have replaced them. Keane was set to face his former side but misses out.

Spurs have taken a 25-man squad to Denver for their first-ever MLS All-Star game, though notable absentees include Vlad Chiriches, Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado – all of whom are linked with moves away this summer. Familiar stars such as Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Hugo Lloris are all still included though as Mauricio Pochettino is likely to field a strong lineup. Former Seattle Sounders right-back DeAndre Yedlin will hope to start at right-back ahead of Kyle Walker and new signing Kieran Trippier, while fellow new arrivals Toby Alderweireld and Kevin Wimmer are both likely to see game time too.

Key Points

MLS All-Star’s last five: L/L/W/L/W

Tottenham’s last five: L/W/W/W/W

Key Stat: There have been 29 goals in the seven MLS All-Star games against Premier League opposition since 2005 – an average of 4.1 per game.

Key Players:

MLS All-Stars: Fabian Castillo – The Colombian speedster is always a threat on the wing and comes into the game off the back of five straight wins with FC Dallas. The All-Stars have a wealth of talent but Castillo is a player who will be desperate to impress and could enjoy a fast-paced battle with DeAndre Yedlin down the flank.

Tottenham: Harry Kane – Kane will be looking to pick up where he left off after an incredible Premier League season last term. He impressed on Tottenham’s US preseason tour last year and will look to bag at least one goal on American soil once again here.

Score Prediction

MLS All-Stars 3-3 Tottenham – Expecting a really entertaining game in Colorado, though it’s difficult to pick a winner. Both teams should thrive in attack but could be vulnerable defensively to such quality players on both sides. This is not one you want to miss.

MUST WATCH: Drew Moor shows raw emotion after MLS All-Star selection for Spurs game

The 2015 AT&T MLS All-Star game might be viewed as little more than an exhibition game by some, but try telling Drew Moor that. The Colorado Rapids captain showed just how much it means for a player to represent the All-Star team when he learned of his call-up last night.

WATCH: Drew Moor reacts to MLS All-Star call-up for game against Tottenham Hotspur:

Moor has endured a tough year after suffering a serious knee injury that needed ACL repair last August and ruled him out of the first four games of the 2015 season, but the 12-year MLS veteran defender has been rewarded for his displays since with a first-ever All-Star call-up.

“I’ve always wanted to go to an All-Star Game, and individual awards are great, but it feels really good,” Moor said. “Hopefully my body of work has been enough to prove that I need to be in an All-Star Game, especially here in front of my home fans, which is awesome.

“It’s something that if I go out there and step on the field, I will give it absolutely everything. It has been a roller-coaster season and year for me, and to be picked to the All-Star Game is pretty special.”

Embed from Getty Images

It will be even more special for the 31-year-old as he will play in front of his own fans at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park against Tottenham on Wednesday, July 29 if he takes to the field.

Moor will be competing with seven other defenders named to the prestigious roster but has a good chance of seeing some playing time as his current head coach Pablo Mastroeni will lead the All-Star team out against Spurs.

Moor is the first Colorado Rapids player to make the MLS All-Star squad since 2011 and is the only Rapids player on this year’s roster.

Some will question whether he should be included due to the Rapids’ poor league position, but he has played as part of a Colorado defence that has the second-best defensive record in MLS, having conceded just 19 times in 20 games.

If he does take to the field on July 29, he could be tasked with trying to keep Tottenham’s star striker Harry Kane quiet in what is sure to be a great game.

Does Drew Moor deserve to be an MLS All-Star? Should he start against Tottenham?

MLS All-Stars game announced as Spurs travel to Colorado in July

The 20th annual MLS All-Stars game will see the best in Major League Soccer play against English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur on July 29th.

This very special fixture will be played in Denver as the Colorado Rapids host this year’s AT&T All-Star game at the midpoint of the MLS season in July. The match will be played at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, the home of the Rapids.

Previous All-Star matches have seen the best in MLS take on the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, AS Roma and last year’s opponents Bayern Munich, whom the All-Stars defeated 2-1 at Providence Park.

Embed from Getty Images

Munich took an early lead through Robert Lewandowski but Bradley Wright-Phillips and Landon Donovan fought back with goals for the MLS All-Stars, who were coached by Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter.

Tottenham Hotspur will be the 10th international team to take part in this fixture and return to the United States again, after last season saw them tour the USA as part of their pre-season preparations, and Mauricio Pochettino has said that the fixture will benefit his team.

“We’d like to thank Major League Soccer for the invitation to take part in the 2015 All-Star Game,” Pochettino said in a club statement.

“The fact that this will be our only fixture outside of Europe during preseason says a lot about how we view this game. We enjoyed three tough matches last summer in North America and the quality of football in MLS continues to grow every year.

“We know this quality of the facilities will be top class and we see this fixture against the best players from MLS as good preparations.”

Denver becomes the fourth city to host the All-Star Game for a second time, along with the now-defunct Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J, RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C and the MAPFRE Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.

The fixture could see former Tottenham players Robbie Keane, now of LA Galaxy, and Clint Dempsey of the Seattle Sounders play against their former employers. While now-Tottenham defender DeAndre Yedlin could feature against some of his U.S. National teammates as well as former Sounders players.

MLS President and Deputy Commissioner Mark Abbott is excited to see Spurs take part in the fixture.

“We are excited to welcome another world class opponent in Tottenham and look forward to a competitive match and a tremendous week of events,” he said.

“The AT&T MLS All Star Game continues to be one of the most entertaining and widely anticipating traditions for our league and our sport in North America” he added.

This is sure to be a terrific occasion for all those involved and tickets go on sale to the general public on April 23rd at noon ET. Plus an exclusive presale window for Colorado Rapids full season ticket members and additional partners will take place from April 16th-23rd 2015.

The game will be broadcast live in over 100 countries and UK supporters will be able to watch the game on Sky Sports as part of this season’s TV deal.
