Match Preview

Chelsea will be hoping to finally get their domestic season going after a dreadful start as Southampton make the journey north to the capital on Saturday evening.

After losing in Europe to FC Porto on Tuesday, the onus is very much on Chelsea to get back to winning ways as manager Jose Mourinho is absorbing more pressure with every winless performance.

Currently the champions sit eight points off league leaders Manchester United and that gap could be widened if Chelsea fail to pick up three points on Saturday.

Southampton were always going to have a difficult task of remaining competitive for the European places following high profile departures in Nathaniel Clyne and Morgan Schneiderlin this summer.

However, with the return to fitness of Ryan Bertrand things are starting to fall into place for the Saints.

With two wins in their last six, Ronald Koeman’s men will feel that they should be doing better and face a tough task of changing things quickly in this one.

Team News

Chelsea are only missing one first team player through injury as Thibaut Courtois is still out following a knee injury that could keep him out until Christmas. Diego Costa is serving a domestic suspension so will not feature.

Southampton will be without Fraser Forster and Florin Gardos for the trip to Stamford Bridge as both are still nursing injuries. Jordy Clasie may be able to shake off a niggle in his ankle in time to feature but he remains a doubt.

Key Points

Southampton’s last five: D/W/D/L/W

Key Stat: Chelsea have only lost once in their last 23 home matches in the Premier League.

Key Player: Loic Remy – With Diego Costa currently serving a suspension it will be down to Loic Remy to lead the line. He’s a proven goalscorer and Chelsea need plenty of those at the moment.

United dealt HUGE blow as transfer target is set to stay put

Manchester United are looking likely to suffer a setback in their attempts to sign Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne as the defender is set to sign a new deal, according to The Independent.

United have been linked with Clyne for some time now and were favourites to sign the 24-year-old right-back who has just one year left on his current Saints contract.

Louis Van Gaal has not trusted his Brazilian full-back, Rafael, and has opted to play Antonio Valencia for the majority of the season. It now looks like United’s hunt for a top-class right-back is set to continue, with Barcelona’s Dani Alves another name linked.

Clyne has found his footing in the England national side and as a result has attracted attention from the Premier League’s top clubs.

Southampton will be desperate to keep hold of their stars at the end of the season after last summer’s raid which saw them lose many first team players, including left-back, Luke Shaw to United.

The appeal of Champions League action may sway Clyne in to wanting a move to the Red Devils but it seems likely a move is now off the cards, with Southampton’s chief executive Les Reed confident he will stay on the south coast.

“With Clyney it’s been the same as with Jay [Rodriguez], we’ve been talking for quite a while,” Reed told the club’s official website.

“Ronald made a comment that there was a deadline. That deadline was more about getting a response, and that issue has been solved by the fact Nathaniel has changed his agent. We got an immediate response from his new agent.

“That’s not our business, but there was something there slowing things down. That’s all accelerated, I’m in discussions with his agent and those have been very positive.

“We’re at a very good place at the moment in terms of discussions going on and I’m confident again that we will have a resolution to that sooner rather than later,” Reed concluded.

Will Nathaniel Clyne stay at Southampton? Is he the right-back United desperately need?

‘Done deal’: Manchester United beat Chelsea to £15m star – report

Manchester United look to have beaten Chelsea to the signing of Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne, as Daily Mirror journalist David McDonnell has told MUTV that “its a done deal”.

Clyne has put in some impressive performances under Ronald Koeman this season but as was the case last summer, good displays lead to links away from the Saints, and Clyne is believed to be worth around £15 million as he has just one year left on his current deal.

United and Chelsea have been linked with moves for the England international but the Red Devils have won the race to sign the 24-year-old defender if McDonnell is to be believed.

The Mirror journalist told MUTV: “United want him, what I’m told is it’s a done deal.”

If the deal is completed, Clyne will follow former teammate Luke Shaw to Old Trafford and the English duo could link up on either side of the United defence as they did so successfully at Southampton last season.

Clyne, who can also play at left-back, has made 29 Premier League appearances this season and has scored twice.

Brazilian full-back Rafael is looking likely to leave United this summer as he has just one year remaining on his contract and Louis Van Gaal will want to cash in on the defender after an injury-hit campaign.

Nothing has been confirmed by either club but the signs are pointing towards Nathaniel Clyne wearing a Manchester United shirt next season.

Southampton star drops major hint over move to Manchester United

Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne has dropped a major hint that he could be heading for the St Mary’s exit door this summer, especially if the Saints don’t qualify for Champions League football.

“I’m an ambitious person and want to try and win the title and play in the Champions League. It’s nice to hear teams are interested in you.” Clyne said according to the Express.

The news that Clyne is desperate to play in a team that can challenge for the title and offer him a chance to play in Europe’s elite competition will put Manchester United on red alert as they seek top quality strength in depth.

The 24-year-old right-back has been a mainstay in the Premier League‘s most formidable defence this season as Southampton have conceded fewer goals than any other team, with Clyne’s consistency one of the key reasons behind their success.

Clyne has made 29 league appearances for the Saints and a recent call-up to the England sqaud has made him highly sought after considering he still has his best years ahead of him.

Southampton would undoubtedly demand a hefty transfer fee for the Englishman who joined from Crystal Palace in 2012 and we could expect an offer that they would consider reasonable to be in a similar region to the £27 million fee that United paid the Saints for Luke Shaw.

Ronald Koeman has insisted that Southampton will do everything they can to retain the services of their best players and will be keen to avoid another summer exodus.

“We know it’s not easy as maybe there is some interest. At the moment, there is not a serious bid for whichever player in the team, but we’ll do everything to keep them.”

Chelsea plotting £45m double raid for Southampton duo

Chelsea are looking to bolster their side with the addition of impressive Southampton duo Morgan Schneiderlin and Nathaniel Clyne this summer, according to the Guardian.

The Blues are on their way to winning the Premier League but Jose Mourinho will still be keen to strengthen the team ahead of next year to keep them at the very top of English football.

Schneiderlin and Clyne have both been linked with moves away from St Mary’s this summer, with Manchester United strongly linked with the England right-back, while Arsenal are showing an interest in the French midfielder again.

But Chelsea could swoop in ahead of their Premier League rivals and secure both players for a combined total of around £45 million.

Clyne is entering the final year of his Saints contract and is likely to be on the move unless the Saints can tie him down to a long-term deal. The 24-year-old defender is expected to cost £15 million if United or Chelsea choose to make an offer.

Schneiderlin, 25, is a more expensive option and the Saints have already proved hard to negotiate with when it comes to their midfield enforcer.

Despite last summer’s exodus, Southampton managed to retain Schneiderlin when Spurs and Arsenal were heavily linked with moves, and Chelsea look set to test their resolve once more.

A bid of around £30 million could be enough to tempt the Saints, especially as the player has said he wants to play Champions League football next season. Cashing in now would be a sensible option, given that the club could reinvest into the squad, as they did so successfully following all of last year’s sales.

Clyne would rival Branislav Ivanovic for a starting role at right-back with a move to Stamford Bridge, while Schneiderlin could form a frightening partnership with Nemanja Matic in midfield, allowing Cesc Fabregas to play further forward if any deal is agreed.

Mourinho likes to do his summer business early, and with Arsenal and United both interested in the Southampton duo, Chelsea could look to swoop sooner rather than later.

Manchester United preparing £25m swap deal for Saints star

Manchester United are preparing to make a summer move for Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne in a £25 million deal that will see Javier Hernandez head to St Mary’s, according to Goal.

The Red Devils are looking to bring in a new right-back this summer as Rafael will have just one year to run on his contract at the end of the season, and Clyne has been extensively scouted by United over the course of the campaign.

Southampton are interested in signing Hernandez and his involvement in any deal could be key, though Real Madrid currently have first refusal on the Mexican striker who is on loan with Los Blancos.

United would reportedly be willing to offer Southampton £15 million plus Hernandez for Clyne as they look to raid the Saints for their star full-back for the second consecutive year.

Luke Shaw joined United for around £30 million last summer and Louis Van Gaal wants to reunite Clyne with the young left-back at Old Trafford.

Dani Alves is also believed to be a target, as was FC Porto right-back Danilo before he agreed to join Real Madrid.

But Clyne has proven to be one of the Premier League‘s most energetic defenders this year, and that excites Van Gaal, who could use him in a 3-5-2 system or a more traditional setup with four at the back.

The 23 year old has made 28 starts under Ronald Koeman this season and has just over a year remaining on his current deal.

Southampton have enjoyed a fine season and currently sit just six points behind fourth-placed Manchester United with eight games to play. But their success could lead to a number of first-team stars leaving the club as was the case last summer.

Would Nathaniel Clyne be a good signing for Manchester United? Would a swap deal for Hernandez benefit Southampton?
