Match Preview

New York City FC host New York Red Bulls in the latest installment of the Hudson River Derby on Sunday afternoon, with the home side desperate for revenge after their 7-0 drubbing six weeks ago.

This will be the fifth meeting between the two local enemies. The Red Bulls have won each of the previous four games so far and New York City fans are desperate for a first-ever derby win against their neighbours.

NYCFC come into the game in good form, having won back-to-back games since the international break. They have moved ahead of the Red Bulls in the Eastern Conference and are up to second, just two points behind Philadelphia heading into the weekend.

Patrick Vieira’s side know that form is irrelevant in a big derby game though. They entered the most recent battle between the sides in great form, before shipping seven goals in a horrendous performance.

That match is still very much important ahead of this one. NYCFC need to respond from that setback with a positive performance and controlling their emotions will be the key to success on Sunday.

For the Red Bulls, it will very much be a case of trying to repeat what they did six weeks ago. They arrived at Yankee Stadium in fairly indifferent form but blew their rivals away from start to finish.

Jesse Marsch’s men have not won since the international break but their excellent record against NYCFC so far means they are favourites for this one.

The winner of this could move into top spot in the East, depending on the Union’s result, but there is so much more at stake than league position as the New York rivals go to battle for the fifth time on Sunday.

Team News

New York City have three injury worries heading into Sunday’s clash. Connor Brandt, Federico Bravo and Steven Mendoza are all sidelined and won’t feature. All three Designated Players will start again and will hope to keep their strong form together going.

The Red Bulls travel to their local rivals with four injuries to deal with as Tyler Adams, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Damien Perrinelle and Kemar Lawrence are all out.

Score Prediction

New York City FC 2-3 New York Red Bulls – It’s impossible to go against the Red Bulls based on their impressive record in this derby so far. NYCFC look in good shape heading into the game and they will be desperate to avoid defeat to their neighbours for the first time since joining MLS. However, the Red Bulls seem to have the edge over their enemy and another away win looks likely.

Match Preview

New York City FC host the New York Red Bulls in this season’s first New York Derby as part of MLS Rivalry Week on Saturday night.

Both sides were in action on Wednesday night and will hope fatigue doesn’t affect them here in what is a huge game for the city.

NYCFC have turned their season around in recent weeks and are in sublime form. Their 1-1 draw at Toronto on Wednesday saw them move to the top of the Eastern Conference and they are now unbeaten in five.

New York City have only lost one of their six home games this term, but have only managed to win one too. Saturday’s game will be the first of four consecutive home games for the club in what is now an exciting period.

The Red Bulls aren’t quite in the same rich vein of form, but they have only lost one of their last five and have climbed up to fifth in the East ahead of the weekend’s fixtures.

Jesse Marsch watched his side win all three New York Derbies last season and getting three points here would be a major boost for the 2015 Supporters’ Shield winners.

New York Red Bulls vs Orlando City

The problem is that New York haven’t performed well on the road at all this term. They have lost five of six games away from Red Bull Arena, drawing the only other one, and have only scored twice in those six outings.

As mentioned above, the Red Bulls emerged victorious in all three New York Derby clashes last season – the first year in MLS that the New York Derby was played – and so NYCFC would love to get a first-ever win over the Red Bulls on home soil here.

Team News

New York City FC will be without Connor Brandt yet again, while Frank Lampard’s long spell on the sidelines is also set to continue. Patrick Vieira made a number of changes for the midweek game at Toronto but the likes of Andrea Pirlo, David Villa, Andoni Iraola and RJ Allen could all come back into the starting lineup for this huge clash.

New York Red Bulls remain without Damien Perrinelle, while Ryan Meara is still listed as ‘doubtful’. Gonzalo Veron might come into the starting lineup here but Jesse Marsch is unlikely to make many changes from the side that beat Chicago on Wednesday.

Key Points

New York City FC’s last five: D/W/W/W/D

New York Red Bulls’ last five: W/W/D/L/W

Key Stat: New York City FC are on their longest unbeaten streak since joining MLS last year. Avoiding defeat here would stretch their run to six and would keep them in contention at the summit of the Eastern Conference.

Key Player: David Villa – The Spanish striker started Wednesday’s game in Toronto on the bench but should be even sharper here as a result. He has eight goals this season and has scored four in five at Yankee Stadium. Expect him to be in fine form on Saturday evening.

Score Prediction

New York City FC 2-1 New York Red Bulls – The Red Bulls have really struggled to produce results on the road this year and facing the conference’s most in-form team in an enormous rivalry game will really test the squad. NYCFC look in great shape and should retain their place at the top of the East with three huge points on Saturday.

Match Preview

Sunday night sees the second New York Derby of the season as New York City FC welcome the New York Red Bulls to Yankee Stadium for the first time ever in MLS.

New York City will be seeking revenge after losing the first encounter 2-1 at Red Bull Arena back in May and have only lost once in six since that game.

Recent form suggests that NYCFC will be favourites to win the clash as they have won their last three in MLS and are now just three points behind their fierce rivals in the hunt for playoff football in the Eastern Conference.

Frank Lampard is set to arrive in the next week or so, while Andrea Pirlo looks very close to signing and could even be officially announced as an NYCFC player during the game on Sunday. Jason Kreis knows his side can only get stronger.

New York City FC’s 2015 MLS record: P16 – W4 – D5 – L7

The Red Bulls’ ended their terrible four-game losing streak in midweek as they defeated Real Salt Lake 1-0 to win their first in six games.

However, the form of Bradley Wright-Phillips is still a concern as he is without a goal in six now and missed two penalties last weekend in the home defeat to the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Both sides could do with a win as they both enter a crucial period of the season where the playoffs near closer with every game.

This should be all the more intense given the local rivalry and NYCFC fans will be desperate to ensure their side win the first ever home clash against the Red Bulls.

Team News

New York City FC will be without Tony Taylor and George John through injury. Khiry Shelton, Connor Brandt, Ryan Meara, Josh Williams and Javier Calle are all doubts. David Villa could play alongside Patrick Mullins, if Jason Kreis prefers the 4-4-2 system.

New York Red Bulls are without key player Lloyd Sam as he is out with a groin injury. Anatole Bertrand Abang could play as the lone striker again after impressing against Real Salt Lake on Wednesday night, as Wright-Phillips played in a more supportive role.

Key Points

New York City FC’s last five: L/D/W/W/W

New York Red Bulls’ last five: L/L/L/L/W

Key Stat: New York City have won their last three matches in Major League Soccer.

Key Player: David Villa – Star striker Villa is in fine form and leads a confident NYCFC side. He could be lethal once again on Sunday night.

New York City FC 2-1 New York Red Bulls – New York City look extremely strong at the moment and with New York Red Bulls having only won once in six, you can expect NYCFC to edge it by the odd goal in what should be an excellent game.
