New York Red Bulls vs New York City FC: Preview

New York Red Bulls take on New York City FC in the first NY Derby of the 2018 season on Saturday afternoon. Both sides have young, attacking squads and so this one shouldn’t disappoint.

The Red Bulls come into the derby off the back of last weekend’s 3-2 win at LA Galaxy. That was their first away win of the season and they now return home looking to make up for last season’s series loss against their fierce rivals.

After winning the first four derby clashes, it looked as though the Red Bulls were set to dominate NYCFC. But since then, New York City FC have won three of the last five MLS battles, including two last season in which they went unbeaten against RBNY.

NYCFC come into Week 10 at the top of the Supporters’ Shield. They bounced back from their away loss at Portland to beat FC Dallas 3-1 last time out and restore confidence heading into the New York Derby.

David Villa scored his 400th and 401st career goals in that win over Dallas. However he has yet to score a goal at Red Bull Arena in six previous attempts.

Their latest clash ended in the first ever draw between the two rivals, and Saturday’s game is expected to be a close-run contest again, with both these sides looking set to challenge high up the East this season.

New York City FC’s MLS form: W/W/D/L/W

Key stat: Expect goals – There have been 32 goals in the nine previous MLS clashes between these two – an average of 3.5 per game.

New York Red Bulls vs New York City FC: Prediction

New York Red Bulls 2-2 New York City FC: This one is really tough to call. NYCFC got blown away on their last road trip to Portland but that doesn’t usually happen and they will be well up for the trip to Red Bull Arena. The hosts are looking for revenge after failing to win any of the three games last season. If this is an open contest, there should be goals but expect the two sides to cancel each other out. Score draw.

Watch: Bradley Wright-Phillps and Sean Johnson reveal all ahead of Friday’s New York Derby

It’s MLS Rivalry Week. There are mouth-watering games everywhere you look this weekend. But there’s no doubt all eyes will be on New York as the latest Hudson River Derby takes place on Friday night.

The New York Red Bulls welcome New York City FC to Red Bull Arena for the final derby clash between the pair of the 2017 regular season. The series has already been decided. New York City FC has won both of the previous two MLS meetings this season. But don’t expect Friday’s game to be played with any less ferocity as a result.

The teams met less than three weeks ago at Yankee Stadium, with NYCFC running out 3-2 winners as David Villa scored the second hat-trick in New York City FC history. That result followed on from NYCFC’s first-ever win at Red Bull Arena back in June. The hosts will be desperate to avoid a second home loss to their cross-town rivals here.

Don’t miss: New York Red Bulls vs New York City FC Preview and Prediction

The New York Derby has quickly become one of the fiercest in MLS. There are more established rivalries across the league, but this one feels personal. Fans and players put it all on the line whenever they meet. That usually leads to incredible games, and expect nothing else this week.

In the build-up to Friday’s game, our friends over at Copa90 US have been speaking to NYCFC goalkeeper Sean Johnson as well as New York Red Bulls star Bradley Wright-Phillips.

Watch the video below to find out everything from both sides of the rivalry, including locker room superstitions and what colour New York will be come this weekend…

New York Red Bulls vs New York City FC: Preview

The New York Red Bulls face New York City FC on Friday night in their third and final New York Derby clash of the 2017 regular season. NYCFC have already claimed the series but don’t expect that to lead to any less drama in Friday’s battle.

The New York Red Bulls won the first four New York derbies – including that famous 7-0 thrashing at Yankee Stadium in 2016 – but have lost three of their last four in MLS since. They have lost both games this season and must avoid a third-straight defeat here.

Last Friday’s 2-0 defeat in Portland saw them lose just their second MLS game in seven. However, they had played 120 minutes in the US Open Cup semifinal win at FC Cincinnati three days earlier.

The Red Bulls come into Friday’s game in good form. They know the pressure is on them to get revenge over NYCFC. Apart from securing bragging rights, they can move up to joint-third with Chicago Fire with a win, at least until the Fire play on Saturday night.

New York City FC know that they must complete a treble over their neighbours to keep pace with Toronto FC at the top of the East. The visitors are seven points behind Toronto but have a game in hand over the league leaders.

NYCFC have proven a more resilient side this season. They have developed a clinical edge and have perhaps surprised the Red Bulls by winning the past two derby clashes.

The series is already tied up for the season. NYCFC have claimed their first series win over the Red Bulls. But don’t think that will stop them going for victory on Friday night. Their fans and their players will be desperate to complete a hat-trick of league wins over their rivals, especially with the game being played at Red Bull Arena.

New York Red Bulls vs New York City FC: Team News

The Red Bulls are likely to be without Daniel Royer once again. The winger hyperextended his knee in the latest New York Derby three weeks ago and has yet to return. Aurelian Collin is a doubt but could yet make the starting lineup. Gideon Baah and Mike Grella are out for the season. Summer signing Muhamed Keita could be ready to make an impact off the bench, according to Jesse Marsch.

New York City FC boss Patrick Vieira will have to cope without Yangel Herrera. He is suspended as a result of yellow card accumulation. Ronald Matarrita, Miguel Camargo and Maxime Chanot are all sidelined through injury. Alexander Ring and Ethan White will return after serving suspensions against the Revs last weekend.

New York Red Bulls vs New York City FC: Key Points

NY Red Bulls’ last five: W/W/L/W/L

NYCFC’s last five: W/L/W/W/W

Key Stat: New York Red Bulls have scored 12 goals in their last three home games since being shutout and losing to NYCFC in June, winning all three games.

Key Player: Bradley Wright-Phillips – To score two goals in a derby game and not be the best player on the pitch is rare. But that’s exactly what happened to BWP in the 3-2 loss at NYCFC three weeks ago, as David Villa fired in a match-winning hat-trick. However, Wright-Phillips now has ten goals in eight MLS games against NYCFC. If anyone is likely to grab this game by the scruff of the neck, it’s the Englishman.

New York Red Bulls vs New York City FC: Prediction

New York Red Bulls 2-2 New York City FC – Goals are expected in Friday’s game. The New York Derby has quickly established itself as one of the most ferocious and exciting rivalries in MLS. Expect that trend to continue here, even with the series already wrapped up. Both sides are in good form and are looking to stay at the top end of the East. However, they look set to cancel each other out here. The Red Bulls can’t afford to drop a third-straight game to their rivals. But NYCFC have proven they are a tough unit to break down this season. Score draw.

New York City FC vs New York Red Bulls: Preview

New York City FC host the New York Red Bulls on Sunday evening as the fierce rivals go head-to-head in a pivotal Eastern Conference clash. There are just two points between the pair coming into the weekend.

The New York Derby has quickly become one of Major League Soccer’s most action-packed games. That should be no different this weekend, with the introduction of Video Assistant Referees (VARs) to the league this week sure to add to the drama.

New York City FC stunned the Red Bulls when they picked up a first ever win at Red Bull Arena just over a month ago. That 2-0 win suggested a power shift in New York. But results since mean this is perfectly poised.

NYCFC fell 4-0 to league leaders Toronto FC last time out. That heavy defeat reaffirmed Toronto’s status as the team to beat. But it also once again highlighted that New York City FC are not yet the full package.

They know they must respond with a strong performance in a huge game here. They are a real force at Yankee Stadium and have only lost once at home this year.

For the New York Red Bulls, Sunday is all about revenge. That 2-0 home loss to NYCFC at the end of June was a real statement. The hosts didn’t deserve anything on the day but they have rallied well since.

Jesse Marsch’s men have won four-straight games since that loss. Last weekend’s 4-0 win over Montreal was probably their best game of the campaign. So they couldn’t be coming into the Hudson River Derby in better form.

The Red Bulls are in great form. They know they can leapfrog their rivals into third with a win on Sunday. So this one could turn out to be a classic.

This will be the second of three regular season battles between the pair in 2017. NYCFC hold the advantage after their win back in June. But the two sides will clash again on August 25 at Red Bull Arena.

New York City FC vs New York Red Bulls: Team News

Patrick Vieira will be without a few key men for Sunday’s derby. Khiry Shelton, Ronald Matarrita, Miguel Camargo, James Sands, Rodney Wallace and Maxime Chanot are all out.

Jesse Marsch will defintely be without Gideon Baah and Mike Grella. Aurelien Collin is listed as questionable with a hamstring problem. Connor Lade is expected to be passed fit in time for the game.

New York City FC vs New York Red Bulls: Key Points

NYCFC’s last five: W/L/D/W/L

NY Red Bulls’ last five: L/W/W/W/W

Key Stat: Entertainment – This will be the eighth MLS clash between the New York rivals. In the seven previous clashes, there have been 25 goals. That’s an average of 3.6 per game.

Key Player: Daniel Royer – The Red Bulls’ Austrian star comes into Sunday’s game off the back of being named MLS Player of the Month for July. He scored six goals and picked up one assist in the four games last month. He looks sharp as ever and is in lethal form in and around goal. If NYCFC fail to deal with him, he could run riot.

New York City FC vs New York Red Bulls: Prediction

New York City FC 1-3 New York Red Bulls – The game is perfectly poised ahead of kickoff. It’s tough to split the two sides. But the Red Bulls are in the best form of their season. Their current run was sparked from the defeat to NYCFC at Red Bull Arena, so expect them to be on the hunt for revenge here. New York City’s 4-0 defeat to Toronto last weekend was their worst loss of the year. If they defend as they did a week ago, they won’t be able to cope with the Red Bulls’ attack.

Match Preview

New York Red Bulls host New York City FC in the first New York Derby of the 2017 MLS season on Saturday afternoon in one of the standout fixtures of Heineken MLS Rivalry Week.

The Red Bulls come into Saturday’s game off the back of a solid 2-0 win at Philadelphia Union last weekend. They come into this clash in fifth place, just four points behind NYCFC who sit third in the Eastern Conference.

The home side know they are the favourites here, given their impressive record over their noisy neighbours over the past two seasons. They have won all three MLS games at home to New York City to date, including a 1-0 victory 12 months ago in the only regular season battle in New Jersey.

The added boost for the Red Bulls is that their last game on home soil saw them beat NYCFC less than two weeks ago in the US Open Cup. They have only lost once at home all season and are expected to put the visitors to the sword again here.

But New York City have the advantage of coming into the game four points clear of their rivals and in good form themselves. Patrick Vieira’s men came from behind to beat Seattle Sounders 2-1 last weekend and are now unbeaten in three-straight league games.

The worry for the visitors is that their away form isn’t all that impressive. They have lost three of their last four away from Yankee Stadium – including that Open Cup defeat – and have won just one away game since April.

If either side can take all three points from this one, they will put themselves in a really strong position to kick on and challenge for the Supporters’ Shield over the second-half of the campaign. There has yet to ever be a draw between the two rivals.

This will be actually be the third meeting between the two clubs in 2017, but the first in Major League Soccer. As well as their cup battle this month, the pair met in the Desert Diamond Cup during preseason preparations, with a Sacha Kljestan brace enough to see the Red Bulls win 2-0 on that occasion.

Team News

New York Red Bulls have had to prepare for this huge game without head coach Jesse Marsch, as he has been in Poland, continuing work on his UEFA Pro Licence Course. Gideon Baah remains the only long-term absentee for the Red Bulls on the field, while Connor Lade and Mike Grella are doubts but are officially listed as ‘probable’.

New York City FC travel to Red Bull Arena without three key players as Ronald Matarrita, Maxi Moralez and Khiry Shelton are all ruled out with injuries. Ethan White is one booking away from suspension and will need to watch his step.

Key Points

NY Red Bulls’ form: L/D/W/L/W

NYCFC’s form: W/L/D/W/W

Key Stat: Including their US Open Cup win less than two weeks ago, the New York Red Bulls have beaten New York City in all four of their clashes at Red Bull Arena to date, outscoring their local rivals 9-2 in that time.

Key Player: Bradley Wright-Phillips – The Red Bulls star striker has started to find some form, having scored four in his last four MLS outings. He netted his first brace of the season in last weekend’s 2-0 win at Philadelphia and has a great goalscoring record against NYCFC in MLS. He has played in every Hudson River Derby to date, scoring eight goals in six games against Saturday’s visitors.

Score Prediction

New York Red Bulls 3-1 New York City FC – This is a big game for both sides but injuries to key players means NYCFC’s chances of getting their first points away at their local rivals is unlikely. They still have the attacking quality to hurt the Red Bulls but ultimately, the home side’s strong form in this rivalry is poised to continue.

Gallery: Exclusive photos from Sunday’s New York Derby as Red Bulls run riot

The third and final Hudson River Derby of the 2016 season took place on Sunday night, with the New York Red Bulls thumping arch rivals New York City FC 4-1 at Red Bull Arena.

The Red Bulls dominated the game from start to finish and raced into a 2-0 lead inside the first 25 minutes thanks to goals from Bradley Wright-Phillips and Ronald Zubar.

Sacha Kljestan then converted a penalty on 41 minutes to seemingly put the game beyond NYCFC’s reach, until Tommy McNamara fired a stunning strike into the top corner to give the visitors hope just before halftime.

But Patrick Vieira’s men couldn’t build any kind of momentum in the second half, with Wright-Phillips cooly slotting in his second and the Red Bulls’ fourth of the night to seal a fifth derby win from six meetings.

Ethan White was sent off for New York City in the dying embers of the game to cap off a miserable night for the Eastern Conference leaders. The Red Bulls’ win moved them into second, just two points behind their rivals.

Sunday’s clash offered everything you could want from a big rivalry clash. Check out photos from the game below, taken by MLSGB photographer Ashley Marshall.

Match Preview

It’s the Hudson River Derby this Sunday as New York Red Bulls host rivals New York City FC at Red Bull Arena in a huge Eastern Conference battle between two fierce rivals.

New York Red Bulls welcome City for the first time this season, with the previous two meetings both coming at Yankee Stadium. The sides are tied with a win a piece so far this term. The latest meeting ended with a 2-0 loss for the Red Bulls in a result not many would have predicted after they thrashed City 7-0 back in April.

That 2-0 defeat a month ago was also the first time NYCFC managed to overcome their local enemies so this clash couldn’t be more finely poised.

Jesse Marsch’s side come into this one struggling for form, with just one win in their last six outings. The Red Bulls are sitting third on 28 points, trailing NYCFC, who lead the Eastern Conference, by five points going into the weekend.

It is away form that is troubling New York Red Bulls as they have been on a solid run at home. They’ve won six of their last seven ties and kept a clean sheet in their last six at Red Bull Arena.

New York City FC vs New York Red Bulls

New York City FC come into this one with the bragging rights over their rivals, as previously mentioned and sitting topof the East will only boost morale. But there is plenty of work to do to if they are to take all three points here.

Patrick Vieira will be pleased with how his side responded to their 3-1 away loss to SKC as they bounced straight back to winning ways with a 3-1 win over Montreal last time out.

NYCFC had the look of a side who believed they could overcome any opponent in that win last weekend, they were under pressure for large parts of the game but defended well and countered with great precision.

The New York City players will be hoping to further avenge the pain they put their fans through in that 7-0 loss at Yankee Stadium with a win in their rivals backyard this time around.

MLS: New York City FC vs. Montreal Impact

Team News

New York Red Bulls have just two injury concerns heading into the derby as Kemar Lawrence and Gideon Baah both remain out.

New York City have a bit of an injury crisis on their hands at the moment, as they could be without as many as six for this one. Connor Brandt, Steven Mendoza, Shannon Gomez, Ronald Matarrita and Khiry Shelton all look set to miss out, while Andoni Iraola has been training after suffering his ankle injury last weekend but remains a doubt.

Key Points

New York Red Bulls’ last five: D/L/D/W/D

New York City FC’s last five: W/W/W/L/W

Key Stat: Home form – New York Red Bulls have won six of their last seven home games in Major League Soccer.

Key Player: Sacha Kljestan – The Red Bulls midfielder has a huge role for the derby. He will be tasked with keeping the inform NYCFC midfielders quiet. If he can stop the likes of Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo bossing the game his side have a great chance of winning this tie. Possibly an even more important task for the Red Bulls midfielder will be to keep service to the City stars to a minimum.

MLS: New York Red Bulls vs. Houston Dynamo Sacha Kljestan

Score Prediction

New York Red Bulls 2-2 New York City FC – This has the makings of a classic tie. Both sides are in form in one way or another. With Red Bulls looking solid at home and with City winning six of their last seven outings it’s difficult to see either side losing. RBNY know they have to win this tie to close the gap on their neighbours, while a draw for NYCFC will see them remain top of the East beyond this weekend. Score draw.

MLS Preview and Prediction: New York City FC vs New York Red Bulls

Competition: Major League Soccer – New York City FC vs. New York Red Bulls

Match Odds: NYCFC 2/1 – Draw 12/5 – NY Red Bulls 13/10

Match Preview

New York City FC host New York Red Bulls in the latest installment of the Hudson River Derby on Sunday afternoon, with the home side desperate for revenge after their 7-0 drubbing six weeks ago.

This will be the fifth meeting between the two local enemies. The Red Bulls have won each of the previous four games so far and New York City fans are desperate for a first-ever derby win against their neighbours.

NYCFC come into the game in good form, having won back-to-back games since the international break. They have moved ahead of the Red Bulls in the Eastern Conference and are up to second, just two points behind Philadelphia heading into the weekend.

MLS: New York City FC vs. Montreal Impact

Patrick Vieira’s side know that form is irrelevant in a big derby game though. They entered the most recent battle between the sides in great form, before shipping seven goals in a horrendous performance.

That match is still very much important ahead of this one. NYCFC need to respond from that setback with a positive performance and controlling their emotions will be the key to success on Sunday.

For the Red Bulls, it will very much be a case of trying to repeat what they did six weeks ago. They arrived at Yankee Stadium in fairly indifferent form but blew their rivals away from start to finish.

New York City FC vs New York Red Bulls

Jesse Marsch’s men have not won since the international break but their excellent record against NYCFC so far means they are favourites for this one.

The winner of this could move into top spot in the East, depending on the Union’s result, but there is so much more at stake than league position as the New York rivals go to battle for the fifth time on Sunday.

Team News

New York City have three injury worries heading into Sunday’s clash. Connor Brandt, Federico Bravo and Steven Mendoza are all sidelined and won’t feature. All three Designated Players will start again and will hope to keep their strong form together going.

The Red Bulls travel to their local rivals with four injuries to deal with as Tyler Adams, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Damien Perrinelle and Kemar Lawrence are all out.

Key Points

NYCFC’s last five: L/D/L/W/W

NY Red Bulls’ last five: W/W/W/L/D

Key Stat: Feisty – There have been 19 yellow cards and one red in the four previous meeting between these two – an average of five bookings per game.

Key Player: Bradley Wright-Phillips – The Red Bulls frontman loves playing against NYCFC. He has scored in every meeting with them so far, netting six in four games, and will look to add to his tally on Sunday afternoon.

Score Prediction

New York City FC 2-3 New York Red Bulls – It’s impossible to go against the Red Bulls based on their impressive record in this derby so far. NYCFC look in good shape heading into the game and they will be desperate to avoid defeat to their neighbours for the first time since joining MLS. However, the Red Bulls seem to have the edge over their enemy and another away win looks likely.
