Match Preview

New York Red Bulls host Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night in what is a crucial fixture for both sides.

The Red Bulls come into the game in terrible form, with just one win in their last eight MLS games, and have now lost three straight league games following that 4-2 defeat in Houston last time out.

Jesse Marsch’s side did win in their midweek US Open Cup game against the Atlanta Silverbacks though, and were boosted by the return of Ronald Zubar in that game.

But the priority will now be turning around their league form as they have fallen out of Supporters’ Shield contention in recent weeks and now sit fifth in the Eastern Conference, 11 points behind top placed DC United.

They have only lost once at home this season, but that came in their most recent MLS game at Red Bull Arena, so three points are vital for New York this weekend.

That will be no easy task against a Vancouver Whitecaps side that are still competing at the top of the Supporters’ Shield standings.

Vancouver currently sit third overall, despite only winning three in their last eight, with their 1-0 win away at LA Galaxy last time out their most impressive result so far.

They will hope to continue their road form when they travel to Red Bull Arena and go there with confidence, having won the last two meetings between the two sides.

Last season saw Vancouver win 4-1 at BC Place, while in 2013 the ‘Caps were victorious at Red Bull Arena with a 2-1 win.

Team News

New York Red Bulls will still be without Sal Zizzo, but are boosted by the return of Ronald Zubar who should make his first MLS start since the opening weekend. Matt Miazga is back from the U20 World Cup and could also return to the starting lineup, though Lloyd Sam is a doubt after being taken out of the midweek Open Cup game with and injury. Kemar Lawrence remains away on international duty.

Vancouver Whitecaps boss Carl Robinson has two injury worries going into this one as Andre Lewis and Marco Bustos will both miss out, while Sam Adekugbe remains a doubt. Darren Mattocks remains away with the Jamaican national team.

Score Prediction

New York Red Bulls 1-1 Vancouver Whitecaps – With neither side in inspiring form, it’s tough to see either winning this one. New York need to end their losing streak, while Vancouver will look to remain tight and try and take a point back to Canada.
