MLS Preview and Prediction: Atlanta United vs New York Red Bulls

Competition: Major League Soccer – Atlanta United vs. New York Red Bulls
Venue: Bobby Dodd Stadium – Sunday, March 5 – 19:00 ET (00:00 GMT)
Match Odds: Atlanta United 17/10 – Draw – 9/4 – New York Red Bulls 6/4

Match Preview

Sunday night will see the first match of Atlanta United’s Major League Soccer tenure as they welcome New York Red Bulls to Bobby Dodd stadium, where 50,000 Atlanta fans will be in full voice for what is a historic day for the club.

Both teams will be competing in the newly expanded eleven-team Eastern Conference, so this is a chance to pick up early points in a highly competitive division. Atlanta couldn’t have picked a much tougher opener than facing 2016’s Eastern winners in the Red Bulls.

Atlanta United will begin life in MLS looking good on paper, having recruited well this offseason. Good pickups in Brad Guzan, Greg Garza and Kenwyne Jones all with proven international experience will set a solid base going forward, although Guzan won’t be available until he joins in the summer.

The most impressive of Atlanta’s acquisitions is former Barcelona and Argentina manager, Gerardo Martino who obviously brings an impressive resume and a wealth of knowledge. No prizes for guessing how we expect his new Atlanta team to play, with a high-pressing nature expected from the outset.

atlanta-united-fans

New York Red Bulls’ search for an MLS Cup goes on. After a brilliant regular season last term they fell short in the playoffs and will be wanting to go one further this year. They don’t seem to have strengthened this offseason but still have a solid group of players that will expect to challenge high up the East once again.

Jesse Marsch has managed to keep all his attacking tools for a title push again, with captain Sacha Kljestan and golden boot winner Bradley Wright-Phillips still key. Dax McCarty may be gone, but you have to think they will be in the mix for the MLS Cup come the end of the season again.

MLS: New York Red Bulls vs. Columbus Crew - Red Bulls Celebrate

Key Points

Atlanta’s preseason form: W/L/W/W

New York Red Bulls preseason form: W/W/W/W/W/D/D/W/L

Key Stat: Slow starters – New York Red Bulls managed to lead the Eastern Conference last season, despite losing six of their first seven matches.

Key Player: Kenwyne Jones – Former Premier League striker Jones brings a huge presence to the Atlanta attack and will be handful for the Red Bulls defence that could be missing Gideon Baah on Sunday evening. Jones has young, talented attacking support around him that should provide him with plenty of chances.

Score Prediction

Atlanta United 1-1 New York Red Bulls – Playing their first game at home should ease Atlanta into the swing of the league, but the welcome of the reigning Eastern Conference leaders will be a tough test. A score draw seems the most likely result, but this is a really tough one to call.

MLS Playoff Preview and Prediction: New York City FC vs Toronto FC

Competition: MLS Cup Playoffs (Eastern Conference Semifinal – Second Leg) – New York City FC vs. Toronto FC

Venue: Yankee Stadium – Sunday, November 6 – 18:30 ET (23:30 GMT)

Match Odds: NYCFC 11/10 – Draw 5/2 – Toronto 21/10

Match Preview

New York City FC welcome Toronto FC to Yankee Stadium on Sunday in the second leg of their Eastern Conference Semifinal with a place in the Eastern final up for grabs.

There is a huge amount of work for Patrick Vieira’s side to do if they are to progress here. They suffered a sucker-punch in the first leg, conceding twice in the last six minutes to lose the game 2-0.

New York City FC fans will be behind their team from the off, they will be expecting their star-players to step up and be counted for.

One thing NYCFC have in their favour is their home form. They have been scoring freely at Yankee Stadium, eight in their last two, and they’re unbeaten in eight, winning seven.

As previously mentioned, Toronto FC have their two-goal advantage, which they wouldn’t have thought of having heading into the last ten minutes in the first leg last weekend.

Greg Vanney will be expecting his side to put on a professional display and not present NYCFC with easy chances.

While Toronto don’t want to be sitting back and playing a defensive game, they can expect NYCFC to come at them. They will get chances on the counter and with their strike-force it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them score.

If Toronto can keep things tight in the first half New York City will become even more desperate and mistakes will inevitably come, they have to be patient and make sure they get the job done.

New York City FC to remain without both Connor Brandt and Shannon Gomez.

Toronto FC have a full fit squad ahead of the second leg.

Key Points

NYCFC’s last five: W/W/L/W/L

Toronto FC’s last five: L/D/W/W/W

Key Stat: New York City FC have scored at least two goals in nine of their last ten home games. They will need to repeat that feat without conceding to take the tie to extra time at the very least.

Key Player: Frank Lampard – Many will suggest the spotlight is on his teammate David Villa to perform, but Lampard has always been the man for the big occasion throughout his career, scoring vital goals. He will be a huge concern for Toronto who, like Lampard’s opponents throughout the last two decades, will struggle to pick him up when he is in the right place at the right time.

Score Prediction

New York City FC 2-1 Toronto FC – Heartbreak for NYCFC who will fall at this stage. Whatever the outcome they have had a superb season and are making progress. Everything is in Toronto’s favour and they should surely be able to get the job finished off here.

MLS Playoffs Preview and Prediction: New York Red Bulls vs Montreal Impact

Competition: MLS Cup Playoffs Eastern Conference Semifinal (Second-Leg) – New York Red Bulls vs Montreal Impact

Venue: Red Bull Arena – Sunday, November 5 – 16:00 ET (21:00 GMT)

Match Odds: NY Red Bulls 8/15 – Draw 3/1 – Montreal 9/2

Match Preview

New York Red Bulls welcome the Montreal Impact to Red Bull Arena for the second leg of their Eastern Conference Semifinal showdown on Sunday evening. The Impact lead 1-0 from last Sunday’s first leg but know they have a lot to do if they are to advance to the Conference Finals.

The pressure is on the Red Bulls here. They failed to score in an MLS game for the first time since July in last weekend’s defeat but know they have more than enough quality to win this game.

Jesse Marsch guided his side to the top of the Eastern Conference over the course of the regular season and they will expect to live up to their billing as top seed in the East with a victory here.

MLS: New York Red Bulls vs. Columbus Crew - Red Bulls Celebrate

They have an incredibly strong home record but need to make sure they don’t chase the result too quickly here, as the Impact will set up to hit them on the counter in the hope of scoring some valuable away goals.

Montreal enter the game knowing they need to avoid defeat by more than one goal to stand a strong chance of advancing on Sunday night. A draw would be enough to see them through and so they may set up to defend deep and try and frustrate the Red Bulls here.

They played well last Sunday and if they can repeat that performance here, they will have a Conference Final to prepare for.

The Red Bulls beat Montreal in both of their regular season clashes at Red Bull Arena this season and remarkably have still have never lost at home to the Impact in any competition (W7 D1).

Team News

The Red Bulls remain without Gideon Baah and Connor Lade for Sunday’s game but Jesse Marsch isn’t expected to make too many changes, if any, from last week’s first-leg loss. Gonzalo Veron is pushing for a start after coming off the bench last Sunday.

Montreal have two injuries of their own, with Andres Romero and Didier Drogba both sidelined. Drogba hasn’t played for a month but Matteo Mancosu has been deputising well, scoring the only goal last weekend following a brace against DC on the final day of the regular season. Mauro Biello isn’t expected to make any changes for the second leg.

Key Points

New York Red Bulls’ last five: W/W/W/W/L

Montreal Impact’s last five: W/D/L/W/W

Key Stat: New York Red Bulls have not lost a home game in seven months. They are currently unbeaten in 17 home games in all competitions, and enter Sunday’s game off the back of four-straight victories at Red Bull Arena.

Key Player: Bradley Wright-Phillips – The 2016 Golden Boot winner had scored in three consecutive games before last week’s 1-0 loss in the first leg. But he always tends to play better at home and has scored three in his last two at Red Bull Arena. The home side will look to BWP for inspiration in such a crucial fixture.

MLS: New York Red Bulls vs. Columbus Crew - Bradley Wright-Phillips and Dax McCarty

Score Prediction

New York Red Bulls 3-1 Montreal Impact – Goals are expected in Sunday’s second-leg clash, but the pressure is on the hosts to deliver as the top seed in the East. The Red Bulls are a real force at home and should be able to win this match. The issue will be whether or not they can keep a clean-sheet, as any away goals scored by Montreal could be the deciding factor here. Ultimately, we expect the Red Bulls to advance in what should be an excellent game.

MLS Playoff Preview and Prediction: Montreal Impact vs New York Red Bulls

Competition: MLS Playoffs (Eastern Conference Semifinal – First Leg) Montreal Impact vs. New York Red Bulls

Venue: Stade Saputo – Sunday, October 30th – 15:00 ET (19:00 GMT)

Match Odds: Montreal Impact 6/4 – Draw 11/5 – Red Bulls 17/10

Match Preview

Montreal Impact welcome New York Red Bulls to Stade Saputo for the first leg of their Eastern Conference Semifinal clash in the 2016 MLS Cup Playoffs.

This is a huge tie for Montreal, who desperately need to put an end to the Red Bulls’ incredible run of form to give them any chance of reaching the Eastern Conference final.

Mauro Biello will be feeling ecstatic at how his Montreal side demolished DC 4-2 in the Knockout Round on Thursday evening, but he will be slightly frustrated at the way they conceded two very late goals.

The only meeting between these two in Montreal during the regular season ended with a 3-0 win for the Impact. They would definitely take a repeat of that scoreline, but this is going to be a very cagey contest, with both sides looking to ensure there’s still all to play for in the return leg in a week’s time.

Eastern Conference winners, New York Red Bulls eased past Philadelphia on the final day of the regular season to earn a bye through the Knockout Round. They have had extra time to prepare for this game and should be firing on all cylinders.

Jesse Marsch will have his side pumped and ready to take on Montreal and will be urging them to remember form means nothing when it comes to games as important as this.

The Red Bulls have beaten Impact in their last two meetings, although both of those games were at Red Bull Arena, so they will be expecting a hostile atmosphere here.

If New York keep a clean sheet in this tie you have to fancy them to progress in the second-leg. Montreal know they have to take a lead to Red Bull Arena, so the visitors may well have a slightly more cautious approach this weekend, although an away goal would certainly be a boost.

Embed from Getty Images

Montreal were eliminated from the playoffs last season at this very stage, despite winning their home tie in the first-leg, so they can take nothing for granted against a very strong opponent on Sunday evening.

Team News

Andres Romero remains Montreal Impact’s only injury concern. It remains to be seen whether Didier Drogba will return to the side following his soap opera saga in the last few weeks. He sat out of Thursday’s win over DC, with Matteo Mancosu shining up front in the Ivorian’s absence.

New York Red Bulls are expecting to be without four for this tie as Gideon Baah, Connor Lade, Justin Bilyeu and Daniel Royer are all out. Golden Boot winner Bradley Wright-Phillips will be looking to continue his fine form here.

Key Points

Montreal Impact’s form: W/W/D/L/W

New York Red Bulls’ form: D/W/W/W/W

Key Stat: The Red Bulls are unbeaten in their last 16 MLS outings.

Key Player: Ignacio Piatti – The obvious choice. Montreal Impact need their midfield maestro to be on top form to take a lead into the second leg. He can change a game in a flash and will need to be at his creative best once again here.

MLS: New York City FC vs. Montreal Impact Ignacio Piatti

Score Prediction

Montreal Impact 1-1 New York Red Bulls – This has the makings of a tight game, as most first legs do. Montreal are going to find the confident Red Bulls difficult to deal with and a draw would be an unsurprising result, but would certainly suit the visitors better.

MLS Preview and Prediction: New York Red Bulls vs Philadelphia Union

Competition: Major League Soccer – New York Red Bulls vs. Philadelphia Union

Venue: Red Bull Arena – Saturday, October 1 – 19:00 ET (00:00 BST)

Match Odds: NY Red Bulls 1/2 – Draw 16/5 – Philadelphia 9/2

Match Preview

New York Red Bulls host Philadelphia Union as two of the East’s top sides go to battle as the regular season moves to within three weeks of completion.

Both these sides are set for the playoffs but they are still looking to finish as high as possible, with the top two in the conference rewarded with a first-round playoff bye.

The Red Bulls have been sensational in recent months. They are unbeaten in 13 games – a franchise record – and despite some frustrating late collapses, they look like a complete team.

Embed from Getty Images

Jesse Marsch will be delighted with the turnaround after a terrible start and will now be looking to win the Eastern Conference for a second successive season.

They beat Montreal 1-0 at home last week and are just a point behind Toronto going into the weekend.

For Philadelphia, it’s about trying to build some form back up ahead of the postseason. They haven’t won in four now and have yet to guarantee a top six finish so it’s important they bounce back.

A 1-1 draw at Toronto last time out wasn’t bad but defeats at Portland and Chicago prior to that will have frustrated Jim Curtin.

Embed from Getty Images

The Union don’t have the best of records at Red Bull Arena, having only won one of their eight regular season trips there, so they aren’t expected to end their four-game winless streak on Saturday.

The reverse fixture this season ended 2-2 back in July, with Sacha Kljestan’s brace cancelled out by second-half CJ Sapong and Chris Pontius goals. The sides will meet again in Philadelphia on the final day of the regular season in three weeks.

Team News

The Red Bulls are still set to be without Ronald Zubar, Connor Lade and Gideon Baah for the visit of Philadelphia, while Omer Damari is a doubt and is unlikely to feature. Felipe is one booking away from suspension and needs to watch his step.

Philadelphia have one definite absentee, with Joshua Yaro sidelined as a result of concussion, while there are doubts over Maurice Edu, Walter Restrepo and Tranquillo Barnetta.

Key Points

NY Red Bulls’ last five: W/W/D/D/W

Philadelphia Union’s last five: W/L/D/L/D

Key Stat: The Red Bulls haven’t lost in 13 MLS games and are unbeaten in 12 at Red Bull Arena, keeping clean sheets in eight of those games in front of their own fans. Fortress.

Key Player: Bradley Wright-Phillips – The Red Bulls talisman goes from strength to strength and is on his way to the MLS Golden Boot for the second time in three seasons. It’s incredible to think it took him until Week 8 to score this season but he now has 20 for the season, one ahead of David Villa going into the weekend.

MLS: New York Red Bulls vs. New York City FC - Bradley Wright-Phillips Celebrates

Score Prediction

New York Red Bulls 2-0 Philadelphia Union – The Red Bulls have proven to be an absolute force in MLS. They started poorly but Jesse Marsch has his team in great shape ahead of the playoffs. They should stretch their unbeaten run to 14 here with another home clean sheet also likely.

MLS Preview and Prediction: Toronto FC vs New York Red Bulls

Venue: BMO Field – Sunday, September 18 – 17:00 ET (22:00 BST)

Match Odds: Toronto 5/4 – Draw 23/10 – NY Red Bulls 2/1

Match Preview

Toronto host New York Red Bulls on Sunday afternoon as two Eastern Conference title contenders go head-to-head in what should be an intriguing matchup.

Toronto sit top of the East heading into the weekend and have a game in hand over the New York sides that are both on their tail. The Reds have won seven of their last ten and look to be flying, with a second successive playoff berth all but guaranteed.

They sealed a 2-1 win at Chicago last weekend and will now be looking forward to playing five of their last six regular season games at home.

The Red Bulls will offer a stiff test but Toronto fans will remember their opening day win at Red Bull Arena and know they’re more than capable of outclassing the league’s top sides.

For the visitors, it’s a must-win contest if they are to try and take control of the East heading into the final stretch.

New York Red Bulls are unbeaten in 11 games – a franchise record – and look extremely solid. They will be devastated with the way they threw a 2-0 lead away at home to DC last weekend, with the game ending 2-2, but have to now respond.

MLS: New York Red Bulls vs. New York City FC - Red Bulls players

Their 1-0 win at Vancouver two weeks ago saw them win an away game for the first time since May and the challenge is now to try and win back-to-back road games for the first time in over a year.

Jesse Marsch’s side have the joint-best attack in MLS, scoring 49 goals in 29 matches so far. A high-scoring contest is expected on Sunday, even though Toronto are still set to be without star man Sebastian Giovinco.

Team News

Toronto FC will be without Jay Chapman and Ashtone Morgan, who are both injured, while Mark Bloom, Clint Irwin and Tosaint Ricketts are doubts. Sebastian Giovinco is nearing a return from injury but isn’t expected to be fit enough for Sunday’s game.

New York Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch remains without Gideon Baah and Connor Lade for the rest of the season, while Omer Damari and Ronald Zubar are doubts. Dax McCarty is expected to make his return following a few weeks on the sidelines.

Key Points

Toronto’s last five: D/W/W/L/W

NY Red Bulls’ last five: W/D/W/W/D

Key Stat: Form – These two sides are the league’s best as far as recent form goes. Toronto have taken 19 points from their last eight games, with the Red Bulls taking 16.

Key Player: Jozy Altidore – The powerful Toronto striker has been in great form of late, scoring six in his last eight. Last weekend saw Altidore pick up a goal and an assist in the same game for the first time in his MLS career and he looks to be a real threat overtime Toronto go forward.

Embed from Getty Images

Score Prediction

Toronto FC 2-2 New York Red Bulls – Toronto are the league’s in-form side but they haven’t been as good at home as they would have liked to have been to this point. They should still take something from Sunday’s game but the Red Bulls look unbeatable at the moment and will offer a real test. Goals are expected but ultimately this looks set to end all square.

Match Odds: NY Red Bulls 4/7 – Draw 14/5 – DC United 9/2

Match Preview

New York Red Bulls host DC United on Sunday afternoon in a huge Eastern Conference battle between these Atlantic Cup rivals, with both sides desperate for three points.

The Red Bulls are just a point behind NYCFC in the race for the Eastern title and will be confident of a strong end to the season given the fact they are unbeaten in ten games.

Their current streak is the best in franchise history, while they will be looking to keep a third-straight clean sheet here against their long-standing enemies.

New York have won their last four at home and are looking like a real force. Jesse Marsch has a confident and motivated side at his disposal, who look set for a really strong playoff run.

DC United are still trying to secure a playoff spot before they can worry about their form. Ben Olsen’s men are two points behind Orlando City in the East going into the weekend and need to stay on their tails if they are to make the top six.

Their six-game unbeaten run came to an end at NYCFC last time out, losing 3-2 last weekend and that late Lampard goal might have taken the wind out of their sails.

However, they will be pumped up for a derby clash with the Red Bulls this weekend and need to go into the game looking to take the game to their rivals if they are to take anything from it.

The two previous meetings this season have both taken place in DC, with the side’s drawing 2-2 before DC won 2-0 in the most recent clash. However, the Black and Red haven’t won at Red Bull Arena since 2012 and are up against it.

Team News

New York Red Bulls are without Connor Lade and Gideon Baah, who remain sidelined through injury. On top of that, Mike Grella and Alex Muyl are both suspended and will miss out.

DC United are without Luciano Acosta, who is suspended, and that will be a real blow to their chances. On top of that, Chris Korb, Collin Martin, Chris Rolfe, Alhaji Kamara and Charlie Horton are all out, with Jared Jeffrey, Taylor Kemp and Kofi Opare all doubts, so DC are really stretched here.

Key Points

NY Red Bulls’ last five: D/W/D/W/W

DC United’s last five: W/D/D/W/L

Key Stat: New York Red Bulls are unbeaten in seven home games against DC, winning the last six on the bounce against their rivals. DC United haven’t scored a goal at Red Bull Arena in three years.

Key Player: Bradley Wright-Phillips – The Red Bulls striker has really found his form in recent weeks, scoring eight in his last seven. He is tied for the Golden Boot with David Villa and loves scoring against DC United, so expect him to be a real threat on Sunday night.

Score Prediction

New York Red Bulls 2-0 DC United – The Red Bulls have dominated home games against DC United in recent years and should keep their strong run going with another win here. DC have not won away in seven and are facing the league’s in-form side. Surely there’s only one winner here.

DC United host Eastern Conference enemies New York Red Bulls on Sunday night in the latest Atlantic Cup rivalry clash, with both teams looking to extend unbeaten streaks in what should be a hard-fought contest.

DC have gone three games without defeat and will fancy their chances of beating their rivals on home soil for the second time this season when the two sides do battle on Sunday.

Ben Olsen’s men are sitting in sixth place in the East heading into the weekend, only just holding on to a playoff place, so they know it’s imperative they continue to pick up points over the remaining weeks of the regular season.

A win on Sunday would see DC record back-to-back wins over the Red Bulls for the first time in two years. They have only won one of their last six against Sunday’s visitors, including postseason results.

The Red Bulls might be the away side but they are a strong force and will expect to avoid defeat in what is a huge clash. They are just two points off the top of the East heading into the weekend and are currently unbeaten in seven regular season outings.

Jesse Marsch’s side are looking poised for a strong finish to the season, with a deep playoff run the ambition for a squad that’s scoring freely of late, netting 15 in their last six.

New York Red Bulls have won the Atlantic Cup series in four of their last six seasons but need to avoid defeat here to stand any chance of claiming an eighth series win. DC United have won 13 Atlantic Cup series since 1996.

These two sides will meet at Red Bull Arena in three weeks’ time, but all eyes will be on the battle at RFK Stadium this weekend, as these two long-standing enemies go to battle for the 52nd time.

Team News

DC United are without five first-team players through injury ahead of Sunday’s game. Chris Korb, Collin Martin, Chris Rolfe, Alhaji Kamara and Charlie Horton will all miss out, while Lamar Neagle is a doubt with a hamstring problem. Former Red Bull Lloyd Sam is set to lineup against his former teammates in what is sure to be a strange afternoon for the winger.

New York Red Bulls have four injuries to worry about themselves, with Dax McCarty, Gideon Baah, Connor Lade and Damien Perrinelle all sidelined. Sean Davis is expected to line up in midfield again, having scored two in his last two.

Key Points

Key Player: Bradley Wright-Phillips – The Red Bulls forward became the club’s all-time leading MLS regular season goalscorer with his brace against Montreal last weekend. He has now scored 59 regular season goals in 98 appearances and has a fine record against DC United. He will look to fire the Red Bulls to another victory on Sunday afternoon.

Score Prediction

DC United 1-1 New York Red Bulls – DC have proven tough to break down in recent weeks, going unbeaten through their last three. They will expect home advantage to count here against their fierce rivals but the Red Bulls will be confident of sealing a result as they look to keep their unbeaten run going. A tight contest is expected, with a score draw looking the most likely result.

Match Preview

The New York Red Bulls welcome Montreal Impact to Red Bull Arena on Saturday evening in a crunch Eastern Conference battle between two inconsistent sides.

Neither New York nor Montreal has managed back-to-back wins since June but both still find themselves in contention at the top end of the East.

The Red Bulls are in third place, one spot ahead of Montreal courtesy of goal difference so all is to play for here. Jesse Marsch watched his men throw away a two-goal lead at LA Galaxy last weekend and an immediate response to that setback will be required.

New York have won both of their last two home games and will fancy their chances back at Red Bull Arena. However, if Bradley Wright-Phillips misses out, their chances will take a knock.

Montreal Impact are ready to pounce, knowing a win would move them into the top three in the conference. They beat Houston 1-0 last weekend thanks to a Matteo Mancosu goal and will now be looking to win consecutive MLS matches for the first time since April.

The Impact are unbeaten in nine of their last ten regular season outings and have become a very tough team to break down.

This should be an intriguing battle, with the winner set to close the gap on NYCFC at the top to a point before they finish their game in Columbus.

Team News

Montreal Impact remain without Andres Romero, while Lucas Ontivero is a doubt with a knee injury. Didier Drogba will return to the team following his suspension and could partner Matteo Mancosu in attack.

The Red Bulls will be sweating over the fitness of Bradley Wright-Phillips after he left last weekend’s game in LA through injury. Elsewhere, Gideon Baah, Dax McCarty, Connor Lade and Damien Perrinelle are all out.

Key Points

New York Red Bulls’ last five: W/D/W/D/D

Montreal Impact’s last five: D/L/W/D/W

Key Stat: Montreal Impact are unbeaten in their last four away games in MLS. They have never managed to go five road games without a defeat in franchise history.

Key Player: Sacha Kljestan – The Red Bulls playmaker is enjoying a solid season, having netted five goals with 11 assists in 23 matches. He scored in the clash with Montreal at Red Bull Arena last season and will look to be a thorn in the Canadian team’s side once more here.

Score Prediction

New York Red Bulls 2-2 Montreal Impact – Goals are expected when these sides go head-to-head on Saturday evening, with both teams likely to fancy their chances. The Red Bulls have another worrying injury list and may not be at full strength. However, they are always a force at home and will expect to avoid defeat. They have drawn their last two games 2-2 and may have to settle for another point here against an Impact team that are tough to break down on their travels.

Match Preview

LA Galaxy take on New York Red Bulls in one of the standout fixtures of the MLS season on Sunday night. Both are in good form and know this is a crucial fixture.

The Galaxy sit third in the West heading into the weekend, with the Red Bulls sat in third in the East. Both clubs have their eyes on their conference titles and know that three points here would give them another major boost.

LA Galaxy saw their four-game win streak ended in Seattle last weekend as they earned a 1-1 draw despite being outplayed for much of the contest.

Portland Timbers vs LA Galaxy

However, a return to StubHub Center will increase their chances of success as they remain one of the league’s strongest sides at home. They have still not lost in front of their own fans this season.

The Red Bulls have been in inconsistent form over the past month, but importantly have gone unbeaten through their last five games.

Jesse Marsch’s side drew 2-2 at Chicago Fire last weekend and have now failed to win any of their last five away games in MLS. That will be a concern ahead of this contest.

MLS: New York Red Bulls vs. New York City FC - Red Bulls players

The Red Bulls sealed a 3-0 CONCACAF Champions League win against Antigua GFC on Wednesday night. A second-string side played that game but it may still leave the squad fatigued here.

This will be the 25th regular season meeting between the two sides. The Red Bulls hold the advantage based on their previous encounters, winning 12 of the last 24 games. LA have won five, with the teams playing out seven draws, including a 1-1 tie in last year’s only meeting.

Team News

LA Galaxy will remain without Robbie Rogers, who is still sidelined following ankle surgery. Gyasi Zardes is a doubt with a chest muscle strain, so Sebastian Lletget may replace him in the starting lineup.

New York Red Bulls have been rocked by the loss of Dax McCarty, who is set to sit out for around 4 weeks following a leg fracture. He joins Gideon Baah on the sidelines, who remains out for the season. Kemar Lawrence and Damien Perrinelle returned from injuries in the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday night but are unlikely to start this one so soon after.

Key Points

LA Galaxy’s form: W/W/W/W/D

New York Red Bulls’ form: D/W/D/W/D

Key Stat: Denied – LA Galaxy have kept a clean sheet in each of their last four home games in MLS.

Key Player: Jelle Van Damme – The imposing Galaxy defender has enjoyed an excellent debut campaign in Major League Soccer. He is a natural leader at the back for LA and can also spread the field with his excellent long passing. He will look to help earn the Galaxy a fifth-straight home clean sheet here.

Score Prediction

LA Galaxy 2-0 New York Red Bulls – The Red Bulls have struggled to earn points on the road this season and have only won one of their 12 away from Red Bull Arena. LA are a strong force at home and have kept four clean sheets in a row at StubHub Center. They should seal three points here and look poised to keep their Western Conference surge on track.
