Premier League Preview and Prediction: Newcastle vs Arsenal

Competition: Premier League – Newcastle United vs Arsenal

Venue: St James’ Park – Saturday, March 21 – 15:00 GMT (11:00 ET)

Match Odds: Newcastle 9/2 – Draw 3/1 – Arsenal 4/7

Match Preview

Newcastle battle Arsenal at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon as both sides are looking for vital Premier League wins with the international break looming.

A win for Newcastle will push them closer to a position in the top half of the table, whereas Arsenal are now in a battle for second with reigning champions Manchester City.

Newcastle take to Arsenal having only won only twice since the turn of the new year – a complete contrast to their opponents Arsenal, who have lost only twice since then.

The Magpies are bouncing back from a crushing 3-0 defeat at Everton last week, which would have knocked the stuffing out of them as they only managed a measly four shots-on-target compared to Everton’s nine.

Arsenal are coming off a superb win away at AS Monaco in the Champions League but have again failed at the last-16 hurdle for a fifth straight season.

A win for Arsenal would see them further grasp their hold on the top four position and with the form they are in at the moment, it’s easy to see why the Gunners are being tipped to finish in those all important Champions League places.

The reverse fixture at the Emirates Stadium in December saw Arsenal run out comfortable 4-1 winners over Newcastle with the red hot Olivier Giroud grabbing two goals along the way, with Santi Cazorla also contributing two.

Team News

Newcastle United will still be without Papiss Cisse who is serving a suspension. Captain Fabricio Coloccini begins his three-match ban following his sending off against Everton last weekend, while Cheick Tiote, Paul Dummett and Siem De Jong remain long term absentees, hampering Newcastle of key players heading into this one.

Arsenal also have a few injury concerns of their own with Alex Oxlade Chamberlain out, along with other notable injuries to former magpie Mathieu Debuchy who could return to training in a few weeks. Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere are still recovering so will be unavailable, but they could both be back before the end of the season.

Premier League Preview and Prediction: Manchester City vs Newcastle

Manchester City vs. Newcastle: Premier League

Venue: Etihad Stadium – Saturday, February 21st – 17:30PM (12:30PM ET)

Match Odds: Manchester City 2/7 – Draw 9/2 – Newcastle 9/1

Newcastle United travel to Manchester City on Saturday evening as major underdogs as they look to end a worrying streak of 16 straight Premier League games without a win against the reigning champions.

City ended a poor streak of their own last time out as they beat Stoke 4-1 to end a winless run of four in the league and need to continue winning matches if they are to have any chance of catching Chelsea at the top of the table.

Manuel Pellegrini is boosted by the return of Yaya Toure to the side as well as new signing Wilfried Bony after the pair won the African Cup of Nations with the Ivory Coast earlier this month.

Bony is in line to make his City debut as Sergio Aguero is facing a battle to be fit in time after he picked up a back injury in the win at Stoke two weeks ago.

Manchester City’s home record in the Premier League: Played 12 – Won 7 – Drawn 3 – Lost 2

Newcastle are unbeaten in three in the league now but travel to City with a long list of injuries. Cheick Tiote could be out of action until April and joins Siem de Jong, Rolando Aarons, Steven Taylor, Rob Elliot, Paul Dummett, Jonas Gutierrez and Ryan Taylor on the sidelines.

John Carver has Newcastle playing some better football but it will take a lot for them leave Manchester with at least a point this weekend.

The Magpies will look to their most recent meeting with City for confidence though as they beat them 2-0 at the Etihad back in October in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup.

Newcastle United’s away record in the Premier League: Played 13 – Won 3 – Drawn 4 – Lost 6

It’s a very different story in the league though as Newcastle have been beaten in the last ten meetings between the two sides and haven’t won a league game at Manchester City in 15 years.

Manchester City’s last five in the Premier League: D/L/D/D/W

Newcastle’s last five in the Premier League: L/L/W/D/D

Key Stat: Manchester City have won their last nine games in all competitions when Yaya Toure has started the game.

Key Player: Moussa Sissoko – The Newcastle midfielder will need to try and keep Toure quiet and Sissoko can be a real threat himself, as he proved by scoring at the Etihad in October’s cup win.

Score Prediction: Manchester City 3-1 Newcastle – City need this more and will be too strong for the Magpies.

Premier League Preview and Prediction: Newcastle United vs Southampton

Newcastle United welcome Southampton to St James’ Park on Saturday evening as the Toon Army look to make amends for their 4-0 thrashing in the reverse fixture at St Mary’s back in September.

Newcastle have slowly slipped down to 10th position in the table since they had dragged themselves up to 5th after they beat QPR in late November in a run of five straight wins.

Since then, a run of nine games with five defeats, two draws and just two wins, as well as the departure of manager Alan Pardew, has left them in a strange period of transition that can’t be allowed to go on for too long otherwise they’ll start looking over their shoulder at the relegation zone.

The Magpies are currently eight points above 18th placed Hull City, so it isn’t a desperate situation just yet, but they will still be keen to continue picking up points in order to maintain their distance.

Newcastle United’s home record: Played 10 – Won 5 – Drawn 3 – Lost 2

As for Southampton, they will be bubbling with confidence after their magnificent 1-0 victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend which has lifted them to third in the table.

It extends their unbeaten run in the Premier League to five games despite a tricky run of fixtures which has seen them face Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United consecutively.

They also continued their good domestic form in midweek with a narrow FA Cup third round replay win over Ipswich Town at Portman Road thanks to a goal from Shane Long.

The Saints are certainly staking a huge claim to show that they’re capable of qualifying for Champions League football this season and if people weren’t taking them seriously before, they most definitely will be now.

Southampton’s away record: Played 10 – Won 5 – Drawn 1 – Lost 4

With the best defence in the division and the fourth highest scoring attack, Southampton will be tipped as favourites for the win, but Newcastle is always a tough place to go, so it makes for a fascinating contest.

Newcastle will be without numerous players through injury, suspension and African Cup of Nations duty, namely Papiss Demba Cisse and Cheick Tiote while Southampton are without Toby Alderweireld (hamstring), Sadio Mane (calf), Morgan Schneiderlin (thigh) and Maya Yoshida (international duty).

Newcastle United’s last five: L/L/W/D/L

Southampton’s last five: W/W/D/W/W

Key stat: Southampton haven’t lost a Premier League game in which they’ve scored the first goal this season.

Key player: Dušan Tadić – The Serbian has been a revelation this season and Newcastle must stop his creativity if they’re to take anything from the game.

Score prediction: Newcastle United 1 – 1 Southampton
