Major League Soccer: New York City FC vs Orlando City

Yankee Stadium – Saturday, June 2nd 2018 – 19:30 ET (00:30 BST)

New York City FC vs Orlando City: Preview

Saturday evening sees New York City FC welcome Orlando City to Yankee Stadium. Both the Eastern Conference sides are in an inconsistent run of form.

Patrick Vieira’s NYCFC come into this one having won just two of their last five games. As a result of their recent run they have lost a little ground in the race at the top of the East. Although they are sitting third, they are just two points behind the leaders.

Form at Yankee Stadium paints a completely different picture for New York City FC. They have won all five of their home fixtures and will be looking at this game as a winnable one.

Orlando City have lost three games on the bounce. They are in danger of slipping out of the top six and considering their form earlier in the season it will be disappointing for all involved.

Jason Kreis’ side saw their inability to find the back of the net when they are on top cost them last time out. They lost 2-1 for the third game in a row, this time at the hands of Chicago. In stark contrast, some clinical finishing was enough for Chicago to inflict that defeat on Orlando.

The Lions are hoping for the return of Dom Dwyer, they have not been the same side without him. The striker has six goals in the seven games he has played – so it’s no surprise they have missed his input.

New York City FC vs Orlando City: Prediction

New York City FC 3-1 Orlando City: Despite Orlando being in a difficult run of form there is encouragement for them as they are still finding the back of the net. NYCFC’s Yankee Stadium form and superior league position makes it difficult to see anything but a home win. No game is a given, but Orlando have work to do if they are to bring that 100% home record to a stop.

New York City FC vs Orlando City: Preview

New York City FC welcome Orlando City to Yankee Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The home side are looking to make it three wins in a row as their former coach Jason Kreis comes to town. It is the first time in their history they have won their opening two games.

Last weekend should have been a far more comfortable result for NYCFC. Their 2-1 win against the Galaxy was a solid result but there is still plenty for them to improve on.

There can be no excuses for not killing the game off this weekend if they get into a similar position. If NYCFC are looking to send out a message to the rest of the Eastern Conference, they need continue their fine start.

Orlando City have had a rough start to their 2018 campaign. They have been blighted with injuries and have felt the impact of missing players. Despite preseason optimism after a busy winter of re-shaping the squad, the Lions find themselves in a tough position with one point from two home games.

This weekend should mark the debut for new signing Sacha Kljestan. That will be a much needed lift to the rest of a depleted squad. The former RBNY man will be out to prove a point and continue his fine run of form against NYCFC.

Some might find the all-time series standings a surprise. Orlando have won five of the nine meetings between the two, with NYCFC winning just twice. If Orlando can pick up their first three points of the season here it should kick-start what could be a very exciting 2018.

NYCFC’s MLS form: W/W

Orlando City’s MLS form: D/L

Key stat: Sacha Kljestan is back and due to make his Orlando City debut. The creative midfielder has ten assists against NYCFC from his time with New York Red Bulls.

New York City FC vs Orlando City: Prediction

New York City FC 3-1 Orlando City: Given the key players missing for the Orlando side and how NYCFC have started the 2018 season a home win looks likely. Patrick Vieira’s side will have to be careful not to allow Orlando too much time on the ball as despite absentees, they still have players who can have a huge impact here. Goals are expected but the home side should run out winners.

Match Preview

New York City welcome Orlando City to Yankee Stadium in one of the standout fixtures of gameweek eight, the Eastern Conference sides are separated by just two points ahead of the clash.

NYCFC come into this one having won 2-0 away at Philadelphia. David Villa scored one of the goals of his career, an incredible strike from distance.

Patrick Vieira’s side are unbeaten at home so far this season and they will want to keep that run going this weekend. They should be competing to top the Eastern Conference and will need to be beating sides like Orlando to do so.

Orlando City are one point off top spot in the East despite playing two games less than leaders Columbus. They have scored just six goals in their five games this season, but have been resolute at the back.

The Lions are looking fierce and resilient early on this season but to win here is going to be a huge ask. Their only away game of 2017 was a 2-0 loss against Columbus and they only won three times on the road last season.

Cyle Larin has enjoyed some great success in front of goal against NYCFC, netting seven in the last six meetings between the two sides.

Team News

Khiry Shelton and Ronald Matarrita look set to be the only absentees for NYCFC against the visiting Orlando this weekend.

Orlando could be without up to five players for this fixture as Kaká, Seb Hines, Rafael Ramos and Jose Aja are all out, while Antonio Nocerino remains a doubt.

Key Points

NYCFC’s form: W/D/W/L/W

Orlando City’s form: W/W/L/W/W

Key Stat: David Villa and Kyle Larin have both scored four times so far this season, their reliability in front of goal may well be key to decide who wins this one.

Key Player: Jack Harrison – The NYCFC forward has had a good start to the season, he netted his second goal of 2017 last weekend and will be hoping to get on the scoresheet once again here.

Score Prediction

New York City FC 2-2 Orlando City – Score draw. NYCFC will continue their unbeaten run at Yankee Stadium and not lose any ground against their Eastern Conference rivals this weekend. Orlando to pick up their first away point of the season, albeit this is only their second game on the road.

Match Preview

Orlando City and New York City kickoff their third MLS campaign this weekend, as the two Eastern Conference rivals face off in a historic tie in what will be the first competitive game at the brand new Orlando City Stadium.

Orlando failed to make the playoffs once again in 2016 and will be hoping for a better campaign this time around. Former New York City FC head coach Jason Kreis is starting his first full season in Florida and will be looking to take an immediate step forward in what is a really tough opener here.

The Lions had a mixed preseason, winning two of their five games, but they will need to be far more consistent than that if they are to make the playoffs for the first time in 2017. Orlando won just nine games last season and they’ll have to make a dramatic improvement to avoid giving their fans another season without much to shout about.

OCSC haven’t lost a competitive home game against New York City since they joined MLS and if they can avoid defeat in their opener it will provide a promising start to the season against a rival side expected to make the postseason for the second successive year.

The 2016 campaign was an ‘almost’ season for New York City FC, who made the playoffs but were eliminated in the Eastern Conference semifinals in devastating fashion, so they’ll be looking to go one better this time around.

Patrick Vieira’s side lost three on the bounce in their six-game preseason but finished strongly with a win over Sporting KC. The departure of both Frank Lampard and Jason Hernandez has lowered the age of the side, but with Andrea Pirlo and David Villa still in the ranks they still have plenty of experience.

This could be a transitional season considering the departures and arrivals to Vieira’s squad but it shows he is trying to build for the future. The acquisition of Designated Player Maximiliano Moralez is an exciting prospect for the City faithful and preseason offered a look into the potential link up between him and Villa, something that will be vital for success in 2017.

Key Points

Orlando City’s preseason form: W/D/L/L/W

New York City’s preseason form: W/D/L/L/L/W

Key Stat: New York City FC are yet to win away in this fixture and given this is the first regular season game at the new Orlando Stadium it would be surprising to see that record broken.

Key Player: Kaka – It’s the obvious choice but this is a huge game for Kaka. A lot will be expected of him to lead Orlando to their first MLS win at Orlando City Stadium and throughout the rest of the season.

Score Prediction

Orlando City SC 2-2 New York City FC – With previous results in mind and shake-ups for both of these squads during the offseason it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a draw here. Orlando are in for a tough season so they need to make their new home a fortress. New York City FC have a difficult task of reaching the same heights as they did in 2016 but they have the class in the squad, it all depends on how quickly the new-look team gels. Score draw.

MLS Preview and Prediction: New York Red Bulls vs Orlando City

Competition: Major League Soccer – New York Red Bulls vs. Orlando City

Venue: Red Bull Arena – Wednesday, July 13 – 19:30 ET (00:30 BST)

Match Odds: NY Red Bulls 8/15 – Draw 100/30 – Orlando 9/2

Match Preview

New York Red Bulls welcome Eastern Conference rivals Orlando City to Red Bull Arena on Wednesday evening in one of six regular season midweek games.

The Red Bulls saw their five-game home winning streak come to an end at the weekend as they only managed a 0-0 draw with Portland.

That result has left New York Red Bulls without a win in their last four, drawing two and losing two. They are currently fourth in the East, trailing top spot by six points.

New York have been very tough to break down at Red Bull Arena and have kept five consecutive clean sheets. They will be feeling confident of getting back to winning ways in this tie.

Orlando City have struggled for form on the road in recent weeks and their winless away run has extended to six games.

OCSC come into this one off the back of their 0-0 draw with Houston and have now managed just one win in their last six outings.

Orlando are now sitting eighth in the East, one point outside the playoff places and three points off the Red Bulls heading into this tie, so a victory would push them right back into the mix.

Worryingly for Orlando, they have conceded at least two goals in their last six games on the road. They’ll know they cannot afford to give the Red Bulls anything to boost their confidence early in this tie otherwise they risk seeing their struggles on the road worsen.

New York Red Bulls vs Orlando City

Team News

New York Red Bulls could still be without as many as three players as Damien Perrinelle, Kemar Lawrence and Tyler Adam are all carrying injuries. Aurelien Collin and Chris Duvall are both set to return after they served their suspensions last time out.

Orlando City have three injury concerns heading into this tie, as Pedro Ribeiro and Kaka are both still expected to be out, while Rafael Ramos is a doubt.

Key Points

New York Red Bulls’ last five: W/L/D/L/D

Orlando City’s last five: D/D/W/L/D

Key Stat: New York Red Bulls are unbeaten in their last six home matches in Major League Soccer, winning five and drawing the other.

Key Player: Bradley Wright-Phillips – The Red Bulls forward has netted five in his last six games at Red Bull Arena. He will be eager to get back amongst the goals here after going two games without hitting the back of the net.

New York Red Bulls vs Orlando City Bradley Wright-Phillips

Score Prediction

New York Red Bulls 2-1 Orlando City – New York Red Bulls to continue the theme of putting two goals past Orlando City as a visiting side. This looks like it has the makings of a tight tie with New York likely to edge it considering their strong home form.

MLS Preview and Prediction: Orlando City vs San Jose Earthquakes

Competition: Major League Soccer – Orlando City vs. San Jose Earthquakes

Venue: Camping World Stadium – Saturday, June 18 – 19:30 ET (00:30 BST)

Match Odds: Orlando City 13/10 – Draw 23/10 – San Jose Earthquakes 21/10

Match Preview

Orlando City and San Jose Earthquakes go head-to-head at Camping World Stadium on Saturday as Major League Soccer returns following a two-week international break.

Orlando City have only won once in their last nine MLS matches, which is quite dreadful considering they are expected to challenge for a playoff place this year.

With Kaka expected back, as well as Cyle Larin, Orlando will want to kick start a run of form that can send them into the postseason for the first time.

They will need to harness their strong home support for the rest of the campaign and Saturday’s clash with San Jose offers a good chance to pick up three important points.

The Quakes have had a few rough seasons but now they have a good chance at making the playoffs, as Dominic Kinnear has built a very good squad.

Key man Chris Wondolowski is still away with the USMNT, while pacey forward Innocent Emeghara is still on his way back from injury, so San Jose are a little light in the final third ahead of this one.

Embed from Getty Images

The next five games could be crucial for the Quakes as they host LA Galaxy, Toronto FC and FC Dallas in the coming weeks. They must continue to pick up points on a consistent basis if they are to secure a top six finish come October.

This will just the second meeting between the two sides. Last year’s clash in San Jose saw the pair share the spoils after a 1-1 draw in a game that saw Chris Wondolowski net his 100th MLS goal.

Team News

Orlando City will be without Pedro Ribeiro, Darwin Ceren and Rafael Ramos through injury. Kaka should return from the injury that ruled him out of Brazil’s Copa America squad, while Cyle Larin os also back having only been involved in friendlies while away on international duty.

San Jose Earthquakes are missing Marc Pelosi, Clarence Goodson and Mark Sherrod through injury. Innocent Emeghara and Matheus Silva are both doubtful. The worry is that Chris Wondolowski is still away with the USA and he is unlikely to be back in time for Saturday’s game. Alberto Quintero, Anibal Godoy, Kip Colvey and Simon Dawkins have all returned from international duty, though.

Key Points

Orlando City’s last five: D/L/W/D/D

San Jose Earthquakes’ last five: L/W/D/D/L

Key Stat: Orlando City are now unbeaten in their last 13 home matches in MLS.

Key Player: Cyle Larin – The Canadian forward has been in fine form this season and has become a key part of this Orlando side. His presence will be key on Saturday yet again.

MLS: NYCFC vs. Orlando Cyle Larin

Score Prediction

Orlando City 2-0 San Jose Earthquakes – San Jose likely to suffer without star striker Chris Wondolowski, who will be sorely missed. That absence will make a tricky away fixture even more of a challenge and we expect Orlando to win this one as a result, with Adrian Heath’s side looking in good shape ahead of this one.

MLS Preview and Prediction: Orlando City vs Philadelphia Union

Competition: Major League Soccer – Orlando City vs. Philadelphia Union

Venue: Citrus Bowl – Wednesday, May 25 – 19:30 ET (00:30 BST)

Match Odds: Orlando City 1/1 – Draw 5/2 – Philadelphia Union 13/5

Match Preview

Orlando City play host to Philadelphia Union on Wednesday night in the first of two games for both Eastern Conference sides’ this week.

Orlando have managed only one win in their last seven, with their win against Montreal Impact last weekend ending a run that saw Orlando spiral down the Eastern Conference. However, that victory saw them get back into the playoff slots and they will now be looking to kick on again.

With players like Julio Baptista, Cyle Larin, Antonio Nocerino and Kaka all looking to make an impact, there should be no reason for Orlando to not make the playoffs this season.

Embed from Getty Images

Philadelphia Union are currently the best team in the Eastern Conference and have the best defence as well – an impressive turnaround when you consider their poor form last season.

Much of their success this season has been down to the goal scoring of CJ Sapong. His form hasn’t gone unnoticed, with a potential call-up to the USMNT being spoken about.

The Union’s form this season would be even more impressive if the Colorado Rapids weren’t top of the Supporters’ Shield standings at this stage, but their feats should still be applauded to this point.

Embed from Getty Images

That being said, Philadelphia will definitely have their eyes on the Eastern Conference title this year, with a playoff place looking nailed on.

This will be the second meeting between the two sides this season. Philadelphia won 2-1 in the first clash thanks to a late Tranquillo Barnetta free-kick. The Lions have yet to beat the Union in three attempts.

Team News

Orlando City are without Pedro Ribeiro, Darwin Ceren, Seb Hines and Rafael Ramos all through injury.

Philadelphia Union are still missing Maurice Edu, who is recovering from a stress fracture. Anderson is still a doubt with a right shoulder dislocation.

Key Points

Orlando City’s last five: L/D/D/L/W

Philadelphia Union’s last five: W/D/D/D/W

Key Stat: Orlando are undefeated in their last 12 home matches in MLS.

Key Player: Kaka – The former World Player of the Year turned on the magic last weekend against Montreal Impact where he assisted both goals. He’s the maverick of this Orlando side and will be extremely important on Wednesday night once again.

Embed from Getty Images

Score Prediction

Orlando City 2-2 Philadelphia Union – Orlando’s unbeaten record at home will be hard for Philly to end. Yet the Union are unbeaten in their last five and look in great shape. This one has draw written all over it, though there should be some goals.

MLS Preview and Prediction: Orlando City vs Montreal Impact

Competition: Major League Soccer – Orlando City vs. Montreal Impact

Venue: Camping World Stadium – Saturday, May 21 – 19:30 ET (00:30 BST)

Match Odds: Orlando 6/5 – Draw 12/5 – Montreal 9/4

Match Preview

Orlando City welcome Montreal Impact to Camping World Stadium on Saturday night in what is a key Eastern Conference clash between sides at either end of the table.

Neither side has been in good form of late, though Montreal still sit second in the East heading into the weekend, five points ahead of Orlando down in eighth.

The Lions are enduring a six-game winless run and Adrian Heath knows his side must starting producing results now.

Embed from Getty Images

They fell 2-1 at Orlando last weekend and have not won since April 3. One positive is that they have yet to lose at home this season and will be confident of taking at least a point from Saturday’s clash, although that wouldn’t help their cause much.

Montreal arrive in Florida off the back of four consecutive draws in MLS. They had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Philadelphia last weekend and have not won since mid-April.

They do remain just one point off the top of the Eastern Conference but need to start winning regularly again if they are to maintain their charge.

Embed from Getty Images

The Impact play three of their next four games at home after Saturday’s trip to Orlando and are in good position to kick on and challenge at the top end of the standings.

This will be the first of three regular season meetings between the two sides this season. They met three times last year, with each side posting 1-1-1 record’s over that stretch of games.

Team News

Orlando have three injury concerns heading into the game. Pedro Ribeiro and Darwin Ceren remain sidelined through injuries, while Seb Hines is a doubt and may not feature.

Montreal will be sweating on the fitness of Didier Drogba as he is listed as doubtful ahead of Saturday’s game. Andres Romero, Cameron Porter and Donny Toia are all out.

Key Points

Orlando City’s last five: D/L/D/D/L

Montreal Impact’s last five: L/D/D/D/D

Key Stat: Early goals – There were nine goals in the three meetings between these sides last season, with seven of those scored in the first 45 minutes.

Key Player: Kaka – The Brazilian playmaker will look to inspire his team to victory in what is an important home game. He has two goals and two assists this season and they have all come at home so he will look to be among the goals here.

Score Prediction

Orlando City 2-2 Montreal Impact – Goals are expected here between two attacking sides that will be out for three points on Saturday evening. The hosts are tough to break down at home and haven’t lost in front of their own fans since last August. But Montreal are also difficult to beat and so a high-scoring draw could be on the cards here.

MLS Preview and Prediction: New England Revolution vs Orlando City

Competition: Major League Soccer – New England Revolution vs. Orlando City

Venue: Gillette Stadium – Sunday, May 1 –  19:30 ET (00:30 BST)

Match Odds: New England Revolution 3/4 – Draw 13/5 – Orlando City 15/4

Match Preview

New England Revolution host Orlando City on Saturday night as they look to end a run of four games without a win. With both sides in playoff spots at the moment, this could be a very exciting affair.

These two met just two weeks ago in Orlando, with a dramatic and controversial ending to the game seeing both sides score in stoppage time to draw 2-2.

Jay Heaps and his New England side were MLS Cup finalists in 2014 and now they are struggling to maintain a playoff place. Much of this problem stems from the six draws from their nine games so far.

The Revs need to kickstart their season soon as they are nearly a third of the way through the campaign and have only managed nine points to date. A points-per-game ratio of 1.0 is way below the requirements for success and also below club expectations.

Embed from Getty Images

New England come into this one off the back of Wednesday night’s 1-1 draw at home to Portland and will hope they don’t show signs of fatigue here.

Orlando City are a much improved unit this season, having seemingly overcome their goalkeeping issues from last year with Joe Bendik playing every minute of their campaign so far.

The additions of Julio Baptista and Antonio Nocerino have helped bolster the attacking options and now Orlando are in a position to challenge the top two of the Eastern Conference, should key players stay fit through the season.

Embed from Getty Images

Orlando is an exciting place to be if you’re a fan as the side plays a creative and fearless style that will trouble the Revs on Saturday. Orlando will be looking to end a winless run of three when they take to the road this weekend.

The 2-2 draw in Orlando two weeks ago was the third meeting between these two. The only previous clash at Gillette Stadium saw the Revs win 3-0 last September and more goals are expected here.

Team News

New England Revolution are without Steve Neumann (knee) and Chris Tierney (hamstring). Juan Agudelo and Teal Bunbury (both hamstring) are doubts so Charlie Davies may get the nod in attack.

Orlando City are definitely without Conor Donovan (ACL), while Kaka is suffering with a groin injury but should shake it off to play.

Key Points

New England Revolution’s last five: W/D/D/L/D

Orlando City’s last five: W/W/L/D/L

Key Stat: Orlando City have never beaten New England in the three attempts so far.

Key Player: Cyle Larin – The Canadian striker has started this season the way he finished the last – scoring goals. He is now a huge player for the Florida-based franchise and will be important on Saturday night again.

Embed from Getty Images

Score Prediction

New England 1-2 Orlando City – Both these sides that should be challenging for the Eastern Conference playoff spots this season but have yet to hit true form. Orlando have been the more potent side so far and have had an extra few days rest than the home side so we see them edging it.

MLS Preview and Prediction: Orlando City vs Montreal Impact

Competition: Major League Soccer – Orlando City vs. Montreal Impact

Venue: Citrus Bowl – Saturday, October 3 – 19:30 ET (00:30 BST)

Match Odds: Orlando City 10/11 – Draw 12/5 – Montreal Impact 11/4

Match Preview

Orlando City entertain Montreal Impact in an important clash in the Eastern Conference this weekend as the race for a playoff spot is set to further intensify.

Orlando are outsiders for a playoff place as it stands, sitting 7th and trailing their opponents Montreal, who sit 6th, by four points.

The home side come into this one off the back of their impressive 5-2 away win over the New York Red Bulls, making it three wins on the bounce. They will need to win all of their remaining fixtures, and have other games go their way, if they are to stand any chance of making the playoffs in their inaugural season.

This is the first regular season meeting between the sides at the Orlando Citrus Bowl, with the earlier meetings in the regular season both being away ties for Orlando. They are yet to beat Montreal, drawing one 2-2 and losing the other 2-0.

Embed from Getty Images

Montreal Impact have also won three on the bounce and are unbeaten in their last six in total. They come into this one off the back of their 2-0 home win over DC United and look to be in good shape.

Montreal know their fate is in their own hands and they just need to continue this great run of form to ensure they remain in the last remaining playoff spot.

A loss in this one would not a catastrophic result due to their two games in hand over Orlando but they will be desperate to increase the gap to seven points over their opponents and continue to send out the message that they mean business as the regular season draws to a close.

This is the first of four away games in succession for the Impact, so they need to remain high in confidence in this tough run of fixtures. They will hope Didier Drogba can carry on his impressive scoring record to strike fear into opponents away from Stade Saputo.

Team News

Orlando City have six injury concerns ahead of this one. Kevin Molino and Conor Donovan are out, while Harrison Heath, Corey Ashe, Pedro Ribeiro and Seb Hines are all doubts. Discipline is going to be key for Orlando here as they have Darwin Ceren, Cristian Higuita, Brek Shea and Rafael Ramos all one booking away from suspension.

Montreal Impact are expected to be without Cameron Porter and Kenny Cooper, while Justin Mapp is a doubt. Laurent Ciman and Andres Romero are both suspended and Marco Donadel is one booking away from suspension.

Key Points

Orlando City’s last five in MLS: D/L/W/W/W

Montreal Impact’s last five in MLS: D/D/W/W/W

Key Stat: Homesick – Montreal have failed to win 28 of their last 30 away matches in MLS.

Key Player: Didier Drogba – Montreal’s talisman has netted seven goals in his first six regular season outings for the club. He has quickly become a fan-favourite and is always deadly in front of goal.

Score Prediction

Orlando City 2-2 Montreal Impact – Another tight tie between the sides to end with the same scoreline we saw earlier in the season.
