Match Preview

Orlando City and New York City kickoff their third MLS campaign this weekend, as the two Eastern Conference rivals face off in a historic tie in what will be the first competitive game at the brand new Orlando City Stadium.

Orlando failed to make the playoffs once again in 2016 and will be hoping for a better campaign this time around. Former New York City FC head coach Jason Kreis is starting his first full season in Florida and will be looking to take an immediate step forward in what is a really tough opener here.

The Lions had a mixed preseason, winning two of their five games, but they will need to be far more consistent than that if they are to make the playoffs for the first time in 2017. Orlando won just nine games last season and they’ll have to make a dramatic improvement to avoid giving their fans another season without much to shout about.

OCSC haven’t lost a competitive home game against New York City since they joined MLS and if they can avoid defeat in their opener it will provide a promising start to the season against a rival side expected to make the postseason for the second successive year.

The 2016 campaign was an ‘almost’ season for New York City FC, who made the playoffs but were eliminated in the Eastern Conference semifinals in devastating fashion, so they’ll be looking to go one better this time around.

Patrick Vieira’s side lost three on the bounce in their six-game preseason but finished strongly with a win over Sporting KC. The departure of both Frank Lampard and Jason Hernandez has lowered the age of the side, but with Andrea Pirlo and David Villa still in the ranks they still have plenty of experience.

This could be a transitional season considering the departures and arrivals to Vieira’s squad but it shows he is trying to build for the future. The acquisition of Designated Player Maximiliano Moralez is an exciting prospect for the City faithful and preseason offered a look into the potential link up between him and Villa, something that will be vital for success in 2017.

Orlando City’s preseason form: W/D/L/L/W

New York City’s preseason form: W/D/L/L/L/W

Key Stat: New York City FC are yet to win away in this fixture and given this is the first regular season game at the new Orlando Stadium it would be surprising to see that record broken.

Key Player: Kaka – It’s the obvious choice but this is a huge game for Kaka. A lot will be expected of him to lead Orlando to their first MLS win at Orlando City Stadium and throughout the rest of the season.

Score Prediction

Orlando City SC 2-2 New York City FC – With previous results in mind and shake-ups for both of these squads during the offseason it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a draw here. Orlando are in for a tough season so they need to make their new home a fortress. New York City FC have a difficult task of reaching the same heights as they did in 2016 but they have the class in the squad, it all depends on how quickly the new-look team gels. Score draw.

Match Preview

Orlando City host New York City on Sunday night in a crucial Eastern Conference clash for both sides as the postseason edges ever closer.

Orlando have had a tough season and have not improved as much as they would have liked since former NYCFC boss Jason Kreis arrived earlier in the summer.

The Lions are seventh in the East heading into the weekend, just a point behind DC United but need to start winning more regularly if they are to make the playoffs in their second MLS season.

Orlando have only won one of their last ten regular season outings and don’t look in a position to go and win Sunday’s contest.

Things are looking much better for NYCFC, who come into Sunday’s match as Eastern title contenders. They lost their long-term lead during the week, as Toronto’s win in Orlando moved them above City with eight games to go.

Patrick Vieira’s men have down very well this season and the aim will now be to capitalise on a great season by winning the East in just their second campaign.

This will be the sixth clash between the two sides since they entered the league a year ago. NYCFC have only beaten Orlando once but will expect to earn a first away win on Sunday night.

Team News

Orlando City remain without Pedro Ribeiro, Harrison Heath and Cristian Higuita, while Rafael Ramos is still a doubt. Jason Kreis is expected to make a couple of changes following the midweek home loss to Toronto.

New York City have just two injury concerns as Connor Brandt and Shannon Gomez remain sidelined for the trip to Florida.

Key Points

Orlando City’s last five: W/L/D/D/L

NYCFC’s last five: L/W/D/D/W

Key Stat: Mismatch – NYCFC have scored more away goals (22) than any other side in MLS this season, with Orlando conceding 20 in their 13 home matches so far.

Key Player: David Villa – The NYCFC striker has enjoyed a fine campaign so far and has three in his last two. He is battling Sebastian Giovinco for the Golden Boot and will be looking to find the net against Orlando for the second time this term.

Score Prediction

Orlando City 1-2 New York City FC – It’s difficult to see Orlando winning Sunday’s game. They are in a rough run of form and are coming up against the league’s best away side this season. Goals are to be expected, although an away win looks the most likely outcome of Sunday’s crunch tie.

Orlando City host New York City on Friday evening in what is a huge playoff game in the Eastern Conference between the league’s two expansion franchises.

This will be the third meeting between Orlando and NYCFC this year and is a repeat fixture of both sides’ opening games as MLS teams.

Orlando will be looking to win a fifth straight game to keep their playoff hopes alive heading into the final weekend of the season. They are four points off Montreal, who occupy the last remaining spot in the Eastern Conference, so a loss here would end their hopes for good.

New York City had their hopes of an inaugural playoff run ended with their 2-1 defeat to DC United last week and will now be looking to finish strong. They had won three in a row before last weekend’s defeat and have certainly improved as the season has gone on.

Orlando know a win will put them just one point behind Montreal, before the Impact play away at New England on Saturday, but New York City will be out to end the Lions’ season early.

New York City’s MLS record: P32 – W10 – D7 – L15

The last meeting between the two ended in a 5-3 win for NYCFC at Yankee Stadium, with the sides sharing a point in their opening MLS game back in March.

Orlando have several injury worries coming into this one. Kevin Molino, Conor Donovan and Earl Edwards Jr. are all out for the season. Corey Ashe, Rafael Ramos and Tommy Redding are all doubts. The biggest worry will be that Kaka is suspended for the game, along with Brek Shea.

New York City have two suspensions of their own to worry about as Jason Hernandez and RJ Allen are both ruled out. George John and Tony Taylor are ruled out through injury, while Shay Facey and Andoni Iraola are doubts.

Key Points

Score Prediction

Orlando City 2-1 New York City FC – This is a bigger game for Orlando than it is for NYCFC and the home crowd will be out to roar their side to victory. Orlando haven’t beaten their expansion franchise in two previous encounters but should prevail here, keeping their playoff hopes alive for at least another 24 hours.
