Three reasons FC Dallas can win a first MLS Cup title this season

FC Dallas picked up a fifth win of the season with their comprehensive 3-0 victory at Real Salt Lake on Saturday night. They are still the only unbeaten side in MLS this term and are on track to retain their Supporters’ Shield title come the end of the season. But the club know they need to lift the MLS Cup trophy, given how well they’ve developed over the past three years.

Despite playing in all 22 MLS seasons to date (including the current campaign), FC Dallas have only been to one MLS Cup Final, in which they lost 2-1 to Colorado in extra-time in 2010. Since then, they’ve only won two of their six playoff games and were eliminated by eventual champions Seattle last year in their Western Conference semifinal clash.

Many felt Dallas were the team to beat heading into the 2016 MLS Cup Playoffs. They had just lifted a first-ever Supporters’ Shield and topped the West with 60 points for the second-successive year. On top of that, Dallas also lifted last season’s US Open Cup, becoming the first MLS team to win a double since 2014. Their priority this year is to get their hands on that elusive MLS Cup and here are three reasons why they look set to do it.

Oscar Pareja’s men have picked up 18 points from their first eight games of the 2017 season. That’s one more than they had after eight games in 2016 and four more than they had in 2015. They have finished with 60 points in each of the last two seasons – an amount that has been enough to win the Supporters’ Shield for the past two seasons, and only missed out on the 2015 title as a result of an inferior goalscoring record to the Red Bulls.

Major League Soccer is impossible to predict week-to-week and yet Dallas remain competitive, no matter the circumstances. They have the ninth-smallest wage bill in the league with the youngest team in the league and seem to have depth all over the field. They have only lost one of their last 16 regular season games in total and haven’t suffered back-to-back defeats for 12 months.

One of the key reasons Dallas remain so consistent is the fact they can run until the very last kick of the game. They don’t score many early goals – they are the only team yet to score in the first 30 minutes of a game this year – but they have scored 90% of their goals this season in the second half and their relentless pressure often pays off. The young legs throughout the side help, but Pareja and his coaching staff deserve great credit for ensuring fitness levels are always impressively high.

Home record

We all know a strong home record provides a platform for success in football. It’s the case all over the world but it’s imperative in MLS, given the long-distance travel teams have to endure for road games over the course of a campaign. For Dallas, Toyota Stadium is a fortress. They have only lost one of their last 29 MLS games at home and have won 74% of their home matches over the past two seasons.

Dallas are good wherever they play but whenever they take to the field in front of their own supporters, they seem to play with even more confidence and never look like losing. If they can keep that going over the remainder of this term, they should put themselves in a position to win a second-successive Supporters’ Shield, as well as a first MLS Cup title in December.

MLS Preview and Prediction: New York City FC vs FC Dallas

Competition: Major League Soccer – New York City FC vs. FC Dallas

Venue: Yankee Stadium – Saturday, September 17 – 19:00 ET (00:00 BST)

Match Odds: NYCFC 5/6 – Draw 5/2 – Dallas 3/1

Match Preview

It’s a huge clash at the top of the Supporters’ Shield standings this weekend as New York City FC welcome FC Dallas to Yankee Stadium on Saturday evening.

New York City FC are sitting 3rd in the Eastern Conference, two points off top spot and five points behind in the race for the Supporters’ Shield.

Patrick Vieira’s side have been in excellent form at home, winning their last five. But, as the case with so many clubs in MLS, their away form is letting them down.

NYCFC come into this one having lost 3-1 away against New England. They need to bounce back here but face a very strong Dallas side.

David Villa, MLS: NYCFC vs. LA Galaxy

FC Dallas are top of the Western Conference and lead the way for the Supporters’ Shield. The result of this tie could have a huge impact on their chances of winning the silverware.

The away side won the US Open Cup in midweek, a huge boost which will give them the confidence to push on and finish the regular season in style.

Despite winning the cup, Dallas come into this one with off the back off a mixed bag of results in their last five regular season games. They lost to Colorado last weekend, so it is essential they do everything to avoid back-to-back defeats here.

Oscar Pareja needs to get his side in a focused but in relaxed frame of mind for their remaining five games, they have some tricky outings ahead and are relying on other results going their way to avoid being caught by Colorado.

Dallas beat NYCFC in their inaugural season in the only meeting between the sides. This is their first visit to Yankee Stadium and they know their facing a New York side who are capable of beating anyone on their own patch.

New York City FC are in good shape heading into this tie. They are expecting to be without two as Connor Brandt and Shannon Gomez are both out through injury.

Zach Loyd remains the only injury concern for FC Dallas.

FC Dallas’ last five: D/L/W/W/L

Key Stat: New York City have won their last five home MLS matches, scoring 14 goals along the way.

Score Prediction

New York City 2-1 FC Dallas – New York City FC to continue their home run and put more pressure on a Dallas side who will be desperate to avoid defeat. Dallas know their chances of winning the Supporters’ Shield could be in a ‘make or break’ couple of weeks here as they prepare for two consecutive away games.

MLS Preview and Prediction: FC Dallas vs Portland Timbers

Competition: Major League Soccer – FC Dallas vs. Portland Timbers

Venue: Toyota Stadium – Saturday, September 3 – 21:00 ET (02:00 BST)

Match Odds: Dallas 4/6 – Draw 11/4 – Portland 15/4

Match Preview

Western Conference leaders FC Dallas welcome Portland Timbers to Toyota Stadium on Saturday evening in a tie that could throw up a surprise result.

Dallas are on an incredible run of form at home, unbeaten in their last 20 – winning 15, so Toyota Stadium is the last place any side wants to be visiting at this stage of the season.

Oscar Pareja’s side top the Supporters’ Shield standings and they’ll be feeling of going all the way this season, they need to continue their current form and they’ll have a great chance of doing so.

Dallas have a number of first choice players out through either injury or international duty ahead of this one so the pressure is on them to prove squad depth isn’t an issue.

Portland Timbers have failed to win in their last 13 games on the road in Major League Soccer, they’ll go some way to end that run here against Dallas considering their home form.

Caleb Porter’s side are sitting 6th in the West just above the red line. They have to at least finish in the top six to ensure this season isn’t seen as a complete failure and give themselves a chance of defending their MLS crown.

Portland have struggled for large parts of the season and their away form is preventing them from getting on a decent run of form. They do have a boost ahead of this one knowing how many Dallas regulars are away, but that by no means gives them a significant advantage.

A win here could be a turning point in The Timbers’ season, there are still 21 points up for grabs in their remaining fixtures, so anything is possible.

FC Dallas have just one injury concern heading into this tie as Zach Loyd is out with concussion. While Pareja doesn’t have a selection headache from injuries, he has an addition six unavailable as Tesho Akindele, Carlos Gruzeo, Moises Hernandez, Maynor Figueroa, Aubery David and Kellyn Acosta are all on international duty.

Portland Timbers have two players out in the form of Nat Borchers and Zarek Valentin. Portland have an additional three missing as Alvas Powell and Jermaine Taylor are on international duty with Jamaica, while Darlington Nagbe is with The USMNT.

Key Stat: FC Dallas on a staggering 20 games unbeaten run at home in MLS.

Score Prediction

FC Dallas 2-2 Portland Timbers – Given Dallas have seven players unavailable for this one a draw wouldn’t be the worst result, they’d remain top of the West and maintain their unbeaten home run. Portland would take a draw in this tie but a win would be a real confidence booster. Stalemate.

MLS Preview and Prediction: Toronto FC vs FC Dallas

Competition: Major League Soccer – Toronto FC vs. FC Dallas

Venue: BMO Field – Saturday, May 7 – 19:30 ET (00:30 GMT)

Match Odds: Toronto 11/10 – Draw 5/2 – Dallas 12/5

Match Preview

Toronto FC finally play their first home game of the season this weekend as they welcome FC Dallas to BMO Field on Saturday evening.

Toronto come into this tie off the back of their 2-1 away loss against Portland. They sit 3rd in the Eastern Conference, which is impressive considering all their matches have been away from home.

This tie starts a run of four consecutive home games for Toronto. If they can make home form count they could find themselves at the top of the Eastern Conference and mount a strong challenge for the Supporters’ Shield.

Greg Vanney’s side will be under pressure from their home fans who will expect them to win against a Dallas side who have struggled on the road.

Toronto Celebrate New York Red Bulls

FC Dallas come into this tie off the back of their 4-0 drubbing at the hands of NYRB, a far from ideal result heading into this one.

Oscar Pareja’s side have conceded 17 goals already this season, which is a concern as they face a Toronto side who have only let in seven.

Dallas haven’t lost a Major League Soccer tie between the sides since 2007, but they will be aware of how tough this game will be.

Team News

Toronto have just three injury concerns heading into this tie as Clement Simonin, Benoit Cheyrou and Jonathan Osorio are all expected to miss out. Vanney has no players suspended or nearing suspension.

FC Dallas are expecting to be without two as Alex Zendejas and Matt Hedges are both carrying injuries. Pareja also has no players missing through suspension.

Key Points

Toronto’s last five: L/D/W/W/L

FC Dallas’ last five: D/W/W/L/L

Key Stat: Despite playing every game away from home so far this season Toronto have conceded the least amount of goals in Major League Soccer.

Key Player: Sebastian Giovinco – An easy choice. The Toronto goal-machine has already scored six in his eight appearances this season. He will be looking forward to playing at home just as much as the Toronto fans will enjoy watching their star-player.

Sebastian Giovinco Toronto FC 2016

Score Prediction

Toronto FC 2-0 FC Dallas – There will be a buzz about this game for Toronto. They have conceded less goals than games they have played this season and will be relishing the chance to play in front of their home fans. Dallas have struggled away from home and might not have enough to take anything from this clash.

Oscar Pareja’s side are top of the Western Conference and lead the Supporters’ Shield standings heading into the weekend. Their home form has been impeccable and they have scored at least twice in ten of their last 11 outings in front of their own fans.

Dallas won the last meeting between the sides at Toyota Stadium 3-1 and will be hoping they can repeat that result this time around to remain top of the pile at this early stage of the campaign.

Sporting Kansas City suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Colorado Rapids in the first outing of their double game week on Wednesday evening in what was a surprise result.

They dropped from top of the West to second and now trail Dallas by two points heading into this tie. Peter Vermes will be ruing his side’s late lapse of concentration after they had levelled against Colorado before then throwing away a share of the points.

SKC will be feeling confident heading into this tie as they have won the last three meetings between the side’s in all competitions, scoring 13 times in those matches.

Team News

FC Dallas have just two injury concerns heading into this tie as Alex Zendejas and Mauro Diaz are both expected to miss out. Carlos Gruezo is one caution away from suspension and will need to watch his step.

Sporting Kansas City have seven injury concerns. Justin Mapp, Soni Mustivar, Kevin Ellis and Chance Myers are all expected to miss out, while Brad Davis, Matt Besler and Paulo Nagamura are all doubts. Key players Dom Dwyer and Benny Feilhaber started Wednesday’s game on the bench but should both start from the outset here.

Score Prediction

FC Dallas 2-1 Sporting Kansas City – FC Dallas look set to inflict a second loss in as many matches on Sporting Kansas City and remain top of the Western Conference. They are a real force, particularly at home, and have to be fancied above Sporting KC to take all three points on Sunday.

MLS Preview and Prediction: DC United vs FC Dallas

Competition: Major League Soccer – DC United vs. FC Dallas

Venue: RFK Stadium – Saturday, March 26 – 21:30 GMT (17:30 ET)

Match Odds: DC United 13/8 – Draw  23/10 – FC Dallas 17/10

Match Preview

DC United welcome FC Dallas to RFK Stadium on Saturday in a weekend with minimal MLS action due to the international games taking place across the globe.

DC’s struggles up top are ongoing and they have only scored twice in their three outings so far this season. Ben Olsen is going to need to ensure his side are as tight as possible at the back to make sure the goals they are scoring are having an impact in their fixtures.

The Black and Red are yet to win this season and come into this tie off the back of their draw against Colorado last time out.

The boost for DC will be that they have won the last two meetings between these sides at RFK 4-1, so they’ll be hoping history repeats itself once again to give them their much needed first win of the 2016 regular season.

Embed from Getty Images

FC Dallas are sitting 4th in the Western Conference after their solid start to the season. They have won two of their three ties so far but there is still room for improvement.

Oscar Pareja will be delighted with how his side bounced back from their 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Houston Dynamo two weeks ago, after his side won 2-0 over Montreal Impact last time out.

Dallas havent won at RFK since 2010 and will be hoping to capitalise on DC’s slow start to the new campaign this weekend.

The international break has left the Dallas side depleted heading into this tie so it will be real a test of Pareja’s squad depth.

Team News

DC United have four injury concerns as Bill Hamid, Andrew Dykstra, Chris Korb and Markus Halsti are all expected to miss out. Alvaro Saborio and Steve Birnbaum have both been called up for international duty.

FC Dallas have two injury concerns heading into this tie. Alex Zendejas it out, while Coy Craft is a doubt. Tesho Akindele, Moises Hernandez, Maynor Figueroa, Jesse Gonzalez, Atiba Harris, Kellyn Acosta and Walker Zimmerman are all on international duty.

Key Points

DC United’s form: L/D/D

FC Dallas’ form: W/L/W

Key Stat: Leaky – FC Dallas have conceded at least two goals in their last three away Major League Soccer outings.

Key Player: Fabian Espindola – The DC forward netted his sides late equaliser last weekend.

Score Prediction

DC United 1-1 FC Dallas – These two are tough to split for different reasons this weekend. DC United have had a difficult start to the 2016 season and Dallas have a lightweight squad due to the amount of players who have been called up for international duty. Both sides will be happy with a tie in this one.

MLS Preview and Prediction: FC Dallas vs Philadelphia Union

Competition: Major League Soccer – FC Dallas vs. Philadelphia Union

Venue: Toyota Stadium – Sunday, March 6 – 15:00 ET (20:00 GMT)

Match Odds: Dallas 8/13 – Draw 14/5 – Philadelphia 9/2

Match Preview

FC Dallas welcome Philadelphia Union to Toyota Stadium on Sunday as both sides look to get their 2016 MLS season off to a winning start.

This is a clash which matches up two teams that had completely contrasting season’s in 2015 as Dallas topped the Western Conference, and only New York Red Bulls got as many points as them across the whole of MLS (60).

Meanwhile, Philadelphia Union struggled in the Eastern Conference, finishing ninth with just 37 points as only Chicago Fire ended with a lower final tally.

But 2016 provides a chance to wipe the slate clean and Dallas will be desperate to get off to a positive start as they begin the long marathon that is the hunt for the Supporters’ Shield title and road to the MLS Playoffs.

Oscar Pareja’s side enjoyed a successful preseason, winning all three of the games they played, including a 2-1 success over New England Revolution.

Dallas have welcomed talented Argentinian forward Maxi Urruti from the Portland Timbers in an attempt to bolster an already strong squad – he bagged two goals in preseason and will be hoping to continue his good start to life in Texas.

Philadelphia Union have been hard at work in preseason with six games in total, winning two, drawing two and losing two, although their most recent fixture was a 1-0 success over Toronto.

Embed from Getty Images

Jim Curtin’s squad has a very different look about it compared to last year with a whole host of changes, so his main job will be trying to get this team to click as quickly as possible.

Perhaps the most promising addition is midfielder Chris Pontius who joins from DC United – the Union will be hoping he brings a stability to the team that will help them challenge for a playoff finish this year.

The only meeting between these two sides in 2015 saw Dallas come away with a 2-0 win from Philadelphia’s PPL Park thanks to goals from Tesho Akindele and Ryan Hollingshead.

Team News

FC Dallas have no injury concerns heading into their season opener, meaning Oscar Pareja has a full squad to choose from and will be expecting his side to be at their best right from the off. Rookie Timo Pitter will be pushing for a place in the squad after being the top goalscorer in preseason with three goals from midfield.

Embed from Getty Images

Maurice Edu (hernia) and Tranquillo Barnetta (knee) are both injury doubts for Philadelphia Union. There is likely to be a number of players making their debuts for the Union, including Chris Pontius and Roland Alberg.

Key Points

FC Dallas’ preseason form: W/W/W

Philadelphia Union’s preseason form: L/L/D/W/D/W

Key Stat: Philadelphia Union have never won a game against FC Dallas in MLS (P8, D4, L4).

Key Player: Fabian Castillo – The young Colombian was a once again a key player for Dallas in 2015 with nine goals and nine assists from 30 appearances and if he can hit the ground running, the Union may struggle to keep him at bay.

Embed from Getty Images

Score Prediction

FC Dallas 2-1 Philadelphia Union – FC Dallas had the best home record in MLS in 2015, winning 13 of their 17 home games, amassing 41 points from a possible 51, as well as losing just twice. It’s a tough ask for the Union to get a result on the opening day, but they’ll certainly put up a tough fight to prove otherwise.

2016 MLS Season Preview: FC Dallas

As the 2016 MLS season edges closer, we’ll be publishing each team’s MLS 2016 Season Preview. Today we take a look at what FC Dallas will be hoping to achieve this season.

FC Dallas enter 2016 in good shape and will be desperate to go one better than they managed last term, losing one game before the 2015 MLS Cup Final. Oscar Pareja has a talented squad at his disposal and knows that his side have a great chance of winning the Western Conference for a second-straight season. Dallas picked up 60 points over the course of the regular season last time out – their highest-ever points total in MLS – and beating that impressive tally would surely guarantee another year full of excitement and promise.

Last season’s finish:

Western Conference – Position: 1st – P34 – W18 – D6 – L10

Embed from Getty Images

What needs to change this year?

Very little. The real challenge for Dallas will be trying to keep things the same, rather than make changes to the team style and approach. They won the joint-most games in MLS in 2015 (18) and had the best home record in the league, amassing 41 points from a possible 51. Keeping Toyota Stadium a fortress will be important. Blas Perez and David Texeira have both left the club and so Dallas will hope they can continue scoring goals as freely without those two.

Key changes to squad:

Ins: Maximiliano Urruti – Forward, Carlos Gruezo – Midfielder, Maynor Figueroa – Defender, Carlos Lizarazo – Forward & Mauro Rosales – Midfielder.

Outs: Bakary Soumare – Defender, David Texeira – Forward, Michel – Midfielder, Stephen Keel – Defender, Dan Kennedy – Goalkeeper, Rolando Escobar – Midfielder, Blas Perez – Forward & Je-Vaughn Watson – Defender.

Key Player:

Embed from Getty Images

Fabian Castillo – Forward – Fabian Castillo has continued to improve as a winger with every season he has played in MLS. He scored ten goals and picked up nine assists in 34 regular season appearances last term – proving how important he is to the side. His pace and tricky dribbling make him impossible to contain and when he’s on song, Dallas normally walk away with three points. The Colombian completed more dribbles than any other player in MLS last term and will expect to do the same again in 2016.

One to Watch:

Carlos Gruezo – Midfielder – Gruezo joins FC Dallas as a Designated Player from Bundesliga side Stuttgart and big things are expected of the 20 year old this season and beyond. He can play in various positions and is experienced for a player of his age, having already played in a World Cup. Oscar Pareja is excited about the acquisition of the Ecuadorian and believes he will make the entire squad better.

Predicted Finish:

Western Conference – 2nd – Dallas should remain right at the very top of the Western Conference in 2016 and will be expecting to have another good playoff run too, with a young and energetic roster at Pareja’s disposal. The worry will be that they will have to get used to life without Blas Perez and David Texeira, who made 37 regular season starts between them in 2015, but that shouldn’t take too long and so FC Dallas look set for another highly promising campaign.

What are you expecting from FC Dallas in 2016?

MLS Preview and Prediction: FC Dallas vs Portland Timbers

Match Preview

Western Conference leaders FC Dallas entertain sixth placed Portland Timbers in the second meeting of the season between the sides.

Oscar Pareja will be delighted with last weekends performance against DC United, which saw his side dramatically take all three points in a 2-1 win.

Dallas have now won their last four regular season games on the bounce and there looks to be no stopping them.

They are unbeaten in their last five regular season outings, which will give them great confidence heading into this tie.

Despite being five places below Dallas, Portland Timbers are just three points behind the leaders, showing just how competitive the Western Conference is.

They come into this one off the back of their 1-1 draw with Vancouver Whitecaps last weekend and Caleb Porter will know his side need to keep taking points off the sides around them to remain part of the pack chasing top spot.

Worryingly for the Timbers they have only won once in their last five games on the road and this will be a real test for them.

Team News

FC Dallas are fortunate enough to still have a fully fit squad. Atiba Harris is one booking away from a suspension.

Portland Timbers have just the one injury concern with Ben Zemanski still out. Will Johnson is suspended while Alvas Powell, Liam Ridgewell and Diego Chara are all treading on thin ice, just one booking away from a suspension.

Match Preview

FC Dallas host top of the Eastern Conference DC United this weekend in what should be a tie worth watching.

Dallas have won their last three on the bounce, including last weekend’s 2-0 victory away against Orlando City.

Oscar Pareja’s side are one of three Western Conference teams who are level on 32 points, but they sit third on goal difference behind Vancouver Whitecaps in second and leaders Seattle Sounders. Dallas have played one game less than their opponents.

Fabian Castillo is in great form but missed out on the chance to score for the fourth game running in the victory over Orlando. The forward has netted seven times so far this campaign.

DC United are leading the Eastern Conference by eight points and look comfortable despite a slight dip in form.

Ben Olsen will be hoping his side can get back to winning ways in this tie as they have lost three in their last six outings and won just twice.

They lost last time out in the away tie at Seattle Sounders in a tight game and can count themselves unlikely to have come away with a 1-0 defeat.

DC will want to keep the cushioning of the eight point lead at the top of the Eastern and must avoid losing back-to-back games to ensure the chasing pack stay out of reach. They are leading the way in the Supporters’ Shield standings by three points, which adds to the occasion as Dallas could potentially draw level on points if they win this one.

Team News

FC Dallas have a fully fit squad going into this one but Atiba Harris remains one yellow card away from a suspension.

DC United have seven injury concerns. Eddie Johnson and Bill Hamid are set to miss out while, Michael Farfan, Collin Martin, Sean Franklin, Chris Pontius and Luis Silva are doubtful. Fabian Espindola is suspended and Perry Kitchen is one booking away from a suspension.

Key Points

FC Dallas’ last five: L/D/W/W/W

DC United’s last five: L/W/W/D/L

Key Stat: DC United have failed to score in five of their last seven away regular season outings.

Key Player: Fabian Castillo – The obvious choice for his attacking flare and recent form.

Score Prediction

FC Dallas 2-1 DC United – Dallas to take advantage of a slightly out of form DC side who have struggled on the road at times this season.
