MLS Preview and Prediction: Sporting Kansas City vs LA Galaxy

Competition: Major League Soccer – Sporting Kansas City vs. LA Galaxy

Venue: Children’s Mercy Park – Sunday, September 18 – 14:00 ET (19:00 BST)

Match Odds: SKC 6/5 – Draw 9/4 – LA Galaxy 85/40

Match Preview

Sporting Kansas City welcome LA Galaxy to Children’s Mercy Park on Sunday afternoon in a tie which could have an impact in both the race for the Supporters’ Shield and the playoff places.

SKC are sitting 5th heading into this tie, five points above the red line. Another win here would put them in a very strong position.

Peter Vermes will be hoping his side can continue their unbeaten run of eight home games against Galaxy going, but he will be aware of how dangerous the away side have looked in front of goal in their last two.

Sporting Kansas City come into this one having drawn 3-3 with Houston. They have now won just one of their last five games.

LA Galaxy looked strong during their double gameweek, picking up four points and scoring seven goals along the way.

Bruce Arena will be disappointed not to have taken all six points from their two games as they would have closed the gap at the top of the Western Conference to just two points.

Galaxy do have a realistic chance of winning the Supporters’ Shield but are relying on other results, they must ensure they finish the regular season well to give themselves the best chance of picking up the silverware.

LA have lost just one of their last 15 games but have won just two of their last 11 on the road. This isn’t going to be an easy tie for them as they face an SKC side who have picked up 19 points from a possible 21 in their last seven home games.

Team News

Sporting Kansas City could be without four as Justin Mapp and Lawrence Olum are out, while Tim Melia and Chance Myers are both doubts ahead of this tie.

LA Galaxy are still expecting to be without Gyasi Zardes, while Steven Gerrard is a doubt.

Key Points

Sporting Kansas City’s last five: L/D/W/L/D

LA Galaxy’s last five: D/D/W/D/W

Key Stat: Sporting Kansas City are unbeaten in their last eight home games against LA Galaxy in all competitions.

Key Player: Giovani Dos Santos – The Galaxy forward was in sensational form for their double gameweek, he added another four goals to his tally, taking him to 14 for the season.

Score Prediction

Sporting Kansas City 2-2 LA Galaxy – Sporting Kansas City to continue their unbeaten home run against LA Galaxy going. LA have been scoring freely but their away form has let them down. A draw here wouldn’t be the worst result for either side but will be more beneficial to SKC at this stage of the season.

Match Preview

Sporting Kansas City welcome Western Conference rivals Houston Dynamo to Children’s Mercy Park on Friday night.

SKC are sitting comfortably above the red line in 5th, six points clear of 7th place and given their quality they should easily claim a playoff spot now.

Peter Vermes will make sure his side are focused as we head to the tail end of the season and he will not be expecting any slip ups.

Kansas City come into this one having lost 2-0 away to Philadelphia. They’ll be looking forward to getting back onto home soil, where they have picked up 18 points from the last 18 available.

Houston Dynamo are sitting bottom of the West coming into this tie, ten points outside the playoff places, while it is still mathematically possible for them to make up the difference it would be astonishing to see.

Interim coach Wade Barrett will be looking to oversee a strong finish to the campaign and Houston certainly have the players to cause damage to their rivals.

The Dynamo won 2-0 in the earlier meeting between the sides this season at BBVA Compass Stadium, they’ll be itching to repeat that scoreline here.

MLS: New York Red Bulls vs. Houston Dynamo Bruin

Score Prediction

Sporting Kansas City 2-1 Houston Dynamo – Sporting Kansas City to take all three points against a Houston Dynamo side who will come up just short. Many will predict an easy win for SKC considering Houston’s recent form but there is no such thing as an easy tie.

MLS Preview and Prediction: LA Galaxy vs Sporting Kansas City

Competition: Major League Soccer – LA Galaxy vs. Sporting Kansas City

Venue: StubHub Center – Thursday, June 2 – 22:30 ET (03:30 BST)

Match Odds: LA Galaxy 7/10 – Draw 14/5 – Kansas City 15/4

Match Preview

LA Galaxy welcome Sporting Kansas City to StubHub Center on Thursday evening in one of six midweek fixtures before the two week international break.

Galaxy’s unbeaten run of nine was ended by Montreal at the weekend in dramatic fashion as they conceded in the last seconds of injury time.

Bruce Arena’s side have now only won once in their last five games and trail top spot in the Western Conference by eight points.

LA are still 5th and do boast the best goal difference in Major League Soccer. They’ll be looking to get back on track here and improve on recent results.

Sporting Kansas City are struggling for form and come into this one off the back of their 1-0 loss to DC, their second loss on the bounce and fourth in their last five.

Peter Vermes will be concerned with SKC’s form, as they have only won once in their last ten outings and only scored seven goals in those games.

Kansas City remain 7th in the West and only three points outside the top six, so if they can regain form and get on a run they could push their way back up the table.

Team News

LA Galaxy have no injury concerns heading into this tie but will be without Robbie Keane, Baggio Husidic and Gyasi Zardes who are all on international duty.

Sporting Kansas City are expecting to be without Kevin Ellis through injury and Seth Sinovic is a doubt. Soni Mustivar, Matt Besler and Graham Zusi are also on international duty.

Key Points

LA Galaxy’s last five: D/W/D/D/L

Sporting Kansas City’s last five: L/L/W/L/L

Key Stat: Fortress – Galaxy are unbeaten in their last six games at StubHub Center

Key Player: Steven Gerrard – The midfield maestro is the joint leader of assists for Galaxy so far this season. He will need to step up and take the game to SKC in the absence of so many key faces for his side.

Score Prediction

LA Galaxy 3-1 Sporting Kansas City – Galaxy to bounce back and continue their strong run of home form. Although both sides are missing players through international duty, SKC have struggled of late and don’t have quite the same squad depth as the home side.

MLS Preview and Prediction: Colorado Rapids vs Sporting Kansas City

Venue: Dick’s Sporting Goods Park – Wednesday, May 11 – 21:00 ET (02:00 GMT)

Match Preview

Colorado Rapids welcome Sporting Kansas City to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Wednesday evening in the first outing of a double gameweek for both of these sides.

Colorado are in fine form as they sit top of the Western Conference and lead the way in the Supporters’ Shield standings by two points.

Pablo Mastroeni will be delighted with how his side have performed so far this season. They come into this tie off the back of their 1-0 home win against Real Salt Lake, which was their 5th consecutive home win of the 2016 campaign. They have scored eight goals in that run and only conceded two.

The Rapids will be full of confidence heading into the game. They are unbeaten in their last six games and have won the last three meetings between the sides, including their 2-1 win over SKC earlier in the season.

Sporting Kansas City are experiencing a difficult patch of form. They come into this tie off the back of their 2-0 away loss to Houston.

SKC won their first two away games of 2016 but are winless in four on the road since then, losing three and drawing one. They have scored five goals in those six away games.

Peter Vermes will be disappointed with how recent results have gone and his side now sit 6th in the Western Conference, which is disappointing considering they had won four of their first five games in the 2016 regular season.

Sporting Kansas City haven’t won any of their last six games, their longest winless run since 2011 where that tally extended to ten games, something the SKC fans will be fearing could happen again.

Team News

Colorado Rapids have three injury concerns ahead of this tie as Sean St Ledger, Eric Miller and Marco Pappa all look set to miss out.

Sporting Kansas City have just the two injury concerns. Kevin Ellis is out, while Soni Mustivar is a doubt. Neither of the sides have any players suspended or nearing suspension.

Key Points

Colorado Rapids’ form: W/W/W/D/W

Sporting Kansas City’s form: L/L/D/D/L

Key Stat: Colorado have won all five of their home games so far this season, which is the same amount they managed in all of their home games in the 2015 campaign.

Key Player: Jermaine Jones – The Rapids midfielder has been a great addition to their squad. He has netted three goals in his four appearances so far this season and is one of the league’s most complete midfielders.

Score Prediction

Colorado Rapids 2-0 Sporting Kansas City – The Rapids are in a fine run of form and face a SKC side who seem to be lacking confidence. Given how good Colorado have been at home this season it would be surprising to see anything other than three points once again at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park for Mastroeni’s side.

The Quakes are sitting 6th in the West and come into this tie off the back of their 3-1 away loss against Portland Timbers last time out.

Dominic Kinnear’s side are unbeaten in their last nine home Major League Soccer outings, so they will be looking to bounce back here and continue their great run of home form.

San Jose have won the last two meetings between the sides, scoring six goals along the way, so the Quakes faithful have the bragging rights over SKC heading into this tie.

Sporting Kansas City are sitting 4th in the West coming into the weekend but there is room for improvement, as they have lost their last two.

Their last outing saw them fall 2-1 away to FC Dallas, a disappointing result for SKC after they had taken the lead.

Peter Vermes will be more than aware of how tough this tie will be and will have his side best prepared to not throw points away this time out.

FC Dallas impressed in the first outing of their double game week on Wednesday, winning 3-1 away against Portland Timbers in a tie that saw them net three times within the first half hour.

Oscar Pareja’s side are top of the Western Conference and lead the Supporters’ Shield standings heading into the weekend. Their home form has been impeccable and they have scored at least twice in ten of their last 11 outings in front of their own fans.

Dallas won the last meeting between the sides at Toyota Stadium 3-1 and will be hoping they can repeat that result this time around to remain top of the pile at this early stage of the campaign.

Sporting Kansas City suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Colorado Rapids in the first outing of their double game week on Wednesday evening in what was a surprise result.

They dropped from top of the West to second and now trail Dallas by two points heading into this tie. Peter Vermes will be ruing his side’s late lapse of concentration after they had levelled against Colorado before then throwing away a share of the points.

SKC will be feeling confident heading into this tie as they have won the last three meetings between the side’s in all competitions, scoring 13 times in those matches.

Team News

FC Dallas have just two injury concerns heading into this tie as Alex Zendejas and Mauro Diaz are both expected to miss out. Carlos Gruezo is one caution away from suspension and will need to watch his step.

Sporting Kansas City have seven injury concerns. Justin Mapp, Soni Mustivar, Kevin Ellis and Chance Myers are all expected to miss out, while Brad Davis, Matt Besler and Paulo Nagamura are all doubts. Key players Dom Dwyer and Benny Feilhaber started Wednesday’s game on the bench but should both start from the outset here.

Score Prediction

FC Dallas 2-1 Sporting Kansas City – FC Dallas look set to inflict a second loss in as many matches on Sporting Kansas City and remain top of the Western Conference. They are a real force, particularly at home, and have to be fancied above Sporting KC to take all three points on Sunday.

Match Preview

Sporting Kansas City welcome Colorado Rapids to Sporting Park in an all-Western Conference clash on Wednesday evening.

SKC are leading the way in the Supporters’ Shield standings after their impressive start to the season which has seen them lose just the once. They take on FC Dallas this coming weekend and will be hoping to continue their run of form by taking maximum points in this double gameweek.

Peter Vermes’ side come into this one off the back of their solid 2-0 away win over New York Red Bulls on Saturday and will be brimming with confidence. SKC have been solid at the back so far this season and opponents have struggled to breach their defence.

Last season’s meeting at Sporting Park saw Sporting Kansas City’s suffer their first home loss to Colorado since 2002, ending a 15-game unbeaten streak against the Rapids.

Colorado have had a solid start to the 2016 regular season and are sitting sixth, in a playoff spot, in the Western Conference as a result.

Pablo Mastroeni’s side have won two, drawn one and lost two of their five fixtures so far. They come into this one off the back of their 1-0 loss away at Real Salt Lake last time out and will be hoping to bounce back immediately.

The Rapids won two of the three meetings between these sides last season, but as previously mentioned they have historically struggled away against SKC. If Mastroeni’s side can take a win from this game it will go a long way to showing Rapids fans they are capable of putting their away struggles against SKC to an end.

Colorado’s next fixture sees them take on New York Red Bulls at home. Rapids fans will be optimistic about taking two positive results out of this double gameweek and continue building towards a push for the playoffs.

Team News

Sporting Kansas City could be without up to five players through injury. Justin Mapp, Matt Besler, Brad Davis and Soni Mustivar are all expected to miss out, while Paulo Nagamura is a doubt.

Colorado Rapids are also expecting to be without five through injury. Sean St.Ledger, John Berner, Kevin Doyle, Jared Watts and Marlon Hairston are all out. Jermaine Jones is serving the final game of his ban he picked up in last season’s playoffs and so his debut is not too far away.

Key Points

Sporting Kansas City’s last five: W/W/W/L/W

Colorado Rapids’ last five: L/W/D/W/L

Key Stat: Sporting Kansas City and Colorado Rapids have the joint best defensive records so far this season, with both sides only conceding three goals in their five outings respectively.

Key Player: Dom Dwyer – The SKC forward has got off a strong scoring start this campaign, with three in five. He netted in his side’s win last weekend and will be looking to cause the Rapids trouble in this midweek clash.

Score Prediction

Sporting Kansas City 2-1 Colorado Rapids – Despite Colorado ending their winless run away against SKC they are likely to struggle here considering how strong the home side have been at the start of this season. As the saying goes, old habits die hard.

MLS Preview and Prediction: Seattle Sounders vs Sporting Kansas City

Competition: Major League Soccer – Seattle Sounders vs. Sporting Kansas City

Venue: CenturyLink Field – Sunday, March 6 – 19:00 ET (00:00 GMT)

Match Odds: Seattle 5/6 – Draw 5/2– Kansas City 16/5

Match Preview

Seattle Sounders kick off their 2016 campaign by welcoming Western Conference rivals Sporting Kansas City to CenturyLink Field on Sunday evening.

Both these sides fell short in the playoffs last season. Reaching the 2016 playoffs will be the minimum requirement once again and both sides can send out a real signal of intent here.

The Sounders will be looking to improve on last season’s fourth place finish in the Western Conference and a key start to the campaign is vital for getting early points on the board.

Sigi Schmid will be relatively pleased with Seattle’s preseason – they won their last two games after struggling with three consecutive defeats. Preseason can’t be looked into in too much depth as it doesn’t compare to the intensity of the real action, so it will be interesting to see how Seattle get going here.

Their two CONCACAF Champions League games against Club America will have helped preparations despite crashing out 5-3 on aggregate.

Sounders started the 2015 campaign with a 3-0 win and will look to replicate that this weekend. Their midseason wobble, where they lost six in seven games, probably cost them the Supporters’ Shield – they cannot afford a repeat of that this time around.

Seattle Sounders vs FC Dallas Fans

Sporting Kansas City struggled to get going in their 2015 campaign. It took them four attempts to get their first win and they will be looking to get off to a flyer here in what is a tricky opener.

Kansas City are unbeaten in their last three outings against Seattle, winning one and drawing two, and a win here would be a remarkable confidence booster to get things going for their 2016 regular season.

Peter Vermes’ side had an unbeaten preseason and will be looking to use that momentum heading into this tie. They finished 6th in the Western Conference last season and will be looking to improve on that and challenge for the Supporters’ Shield this time around.

Team News

Seattle Sounders have no injury concerns heading into the new campaign. The squad has undergone a little reshape though. The departure of Obafemi Martins will be a big role to fill and it appears Schmid is entrusting Jordan Morris with that task. He penned the highest paid contact for a homegrown player in Major League Soccer history so big things are expected from him. Joevin Jones and Michael Farfan will be hoping to make their Sounders debuts.

Sporting Kansas City will also be pleased not to have any major injuries heading into this one. However Ike Opara and Graham Zusi are doubts after picking up knocks towards the end of preseason. The squad has had minimal change which could be a plus for them this season, as players will continue to develop a great understanding of each other on the field. New signings Justin Mapp and Brad Davis will hope to feature.

Key Points

Seattle Sounders’ preseason form: L/L/L/W/W

Sporting Kansas City’s preseason form: W/D/D/D

Key Stat: Goals – Seattle have scored at least two goals in six of their last seven home Major League Soccer outings.

Key Player: Clint Dempsey – The obvious choice! Dempsey is easily the Sounders’ key man, as he makes them tick. His role in an injury-hit 2015 campaign was still immense. In the 20 games he featured in, Seattle only lost three times and he contributed to them finding the net 20 times, with ten goals and ten assists.

Score Prediction

Seattle Sounders 2-1 Sporting Kansas City – Seattle to start their 2016 regular season with a win. They won their last two games of preseason before their Champions League clashes, and they will have put them into good shape. The Sounders should make home advantage count in an action packed game. The last meeting between these sides was a 0-0 draw and Seattle will not want to continue their winless run against SKC in an important opener.

2016 MLS Season Preview: Sporting Kansas City

As the 2016 MLS season edges closer, we’ll be publishing each team’s MLS 2016 Season Preview. Today we take a look at what Sporting Kansas City will be looking to achieve this season.

The 2015 season wasn’t the greatest for Sporting Kansas City. Despite finishing in a playoff place, they will feel disappointed that their season ended in the knockout round as they were knocked out by eventual MLS Cup winners Portland Timbers on penalties. They were flying along at the midpoint of the regular season and looked set to challenge for the Supporters’ Shield. But a distinctly average run through the latter stages cost them as they finished with two losses from their last three. They did manage to lift the 2015 US Open Cup and will be proud of that success but Sporting KC will expect to achieve more in MLS in 2016. We’re honestly not sure what SKC will bring this season but the loss of Krisztian Nemeth is sure to affect them upfront.

Embed from Getty Images

Last season’s finish:

Western Conference – Position: 6th – P34 – W14 – D9 – L11

What needs to change this year?

Their first eleven shouldn’t change too drastically this year, which could benefit them massively over the course of the season. The addition of Brad Davis will help add valuable experience to the squad and will help them in clutch situations, though the loss of Nemeth is a blow. In terms of things that need addressing, their discipline has to improve. SKC picked up 71 yellow cards and nine red cards last term, making them the most ‘aggressive’ team in MLS. It’s also worth a mention that their away form will need to improve. With only four wins from their 17 road trips last term, they will need to pick up more points away from Sporting Park if they are to improve on last year’s finish. We will say, however, the limited changes to the first team should pay dividends and SKC fans should be optimistic for the coming season.

Key changes to squad:

Ins: Lawrence Olum – Defender, Alec Kann – Goalkeeper, Justin Mapp – Midfielder, Brad Davis – Midfielder, Daniel Salloi – Forward & Nuno Andre Coelho – Defender

Outs: Jalil Anibaba – Defender, Mikey Lopez – Midfielder, Krisztian Nemeth – Forward, Erik Palmer-Brown  Defender, Bernardo Anor Midfielder & Amobi Okugo  Midfielder

Key Player:

Dom Dwyer – Forward – English striker Dom Dwyer had, by his high standards, an average year in 2015, only scoring 12, which is a half-decent return. However, Dwyer managed 22 goals in 2014 so a drop by ten goals over a season will have disappointed the pacey forward. Being the senior striker now for SKC may take some getting used to and the previously mentioned loss of Krisztian Nemeth will only add to the reliance on Dwyer to score goals. This is a team that needs to be in the playoffs and Dwyer has a huge part to play once again this season.

Embed from Getty Images

One to Watch:

Daniel Salloi – Forward – Salloi moved to the US in 2014 as an exchange student and joined SKC’s Under-18 squad, scoring 21 goals in 28 games. The 19-year-old forward knows how to score frequently, the question is will he see enough minutes to prove his worth in MLS this year. He is SKC’s first Homegrown Player in nearly three years and has previously spent time in Hungary’s first division on an amateur contract with Ujpest FC. He has potential to be crucial but is unproven at this level. Time will tell how he fairs but he is an exciting prospect.

Predicted Finish:

Western Conference – 7th – The decline of Sporting Kansas City over the course of 2015 should not go unnoticed. They only won three of their last 12 games and might struggle as they enter 2016, with the loss of Nemeth a really significant one. If no replacement is brought in, SKC are likely to struggle to score enough and that could cost them a playoff spot. They just edged into the postseason last term but don’t look like they have improved enough to do any better this season and so a tough year could be in store.

What are you expecting from Sporting Kansas City in 2016?

MLS Preview and Prediction: Sporting Kansas City vs LA Galaxy

Competition: Major League Soccer – Sporting Kansas City vs. LA Galaxy

Venue: Sporting Park – Sunday, October 25 – 19:00 ET (23:00 GMT)

Match Odds: Sporting Kansas City 6/4 – Draw 5/2 – LA Galaxy 13/8

Match Preview

Sporting Kansas City welcome LA Galaxy to Sporting Park for a crucial MLS Decision Day encounter on Sunday evening as both sides still have it all to play for.

SKC are currently sixth in the Western Conference and clinging on to a playoff spot by the skin of their teeth with just one point separating them from San Jose in seventh.

Their fate is still in their own hands and they know that a win in this game is vital in order to secure a place in the postseason – a draw may still be enough but they would be relying on San Jose failing to beat FC Dallas or Seattle Sounders losing against Real Salt Lake.

Peter Vermes doesn’t bring his team into this game in particularly high spirits after a poor run of form. They’ve lost their last two games without scoring and have won just two of their last 11 (D2, L7).

Sporting Kansas City’s MLS record: P33 – W13 – D9 – L11

LA Galaxy arrive in Kansas having experienced similar fortunes to their opponents recently. Since a run of four straight victories through August, the Galaxy have managed just one win in their last six (D2, L3).

Most disappointingly, they were convincingly beaten 5-2 at home to Portland Timbers last time out in MLS, although they did pick up a 1-1 draw away to Guatemalan side Comunicaciones in midweek, which saw them win their CONCACAF Champions League group stage and advance to the quarter-final.

Embed from Getty Images

Despite a run of poor results, Bruce Arena’s side are still second in the Western Conference and will clinch an automatic semi-final berth with victory – a draw would be enough if Vancouver Whitecaps and Portland Timbers both fail to win.

Whatever the outcome, LA Galaxy will be in the postseason having already secured a top six finish.

LA Galaxy’s MLS record: P33 – W14 – D9 – L10

The last meeting between these two sides saw LA Galaxy edge a 2-1 home victory back in April. The last clash at Sporting Park was a 2-1 success for SKC in July 2014.

Team News

SKC have a number of doubts as Ike Opara (achilles), Seth Sinovic (hamstring), Amadou Dia (knee) and Roger Espinoza (foot) are all struggling with injuries.

Embed from Getty Images

LA Galaxy will be without injured goalkeeper Brian Perk (ankle) and Bradford Jamieson IV (concussion). Todd Dunivant (foot) and Baggio Husidic (leg) are also doubts.

Key Points

Sporting Kansas City’s last five: L/D/W/L/L

LA Galaxy’s last five: D/L/W/D/L

Key Stat: LA Galaxy have only kept one clean sheet away from home in MLS this season.

Key Player: Robbie Keane – LA Galaxy have scored more goals than any other side in the Western Conference and Keane is one of the main reasons why. He has 19 goals and eight assists this season and has netted in his last three. He will be hoping for more of the same on Sunday.

Score Prediction

Sporting Kansas City 1-1 LA Galaxy – Neither side comes into the game with any real form to boast about. As a result, we could see a tight affair with both sides relying on other results to decide their fate.
