Portland Timbers vs LA Galaxy: Preview

Portland Timbers welcome LA Galaxy to Providence Park on Saturday evening, looking to extend their impressive run to seven consecutive MLS wins. LA Galaxy arrive with some key absentees are and are up against it as they try and bounce back from their midweek loss to FC Dallas.

The Timbers are the league’s hottest team right now. Portland have won six-straight games – four of which have come at home – and have climbed to fourth in the Western Conference, five points behind leaders SKC with two games in hand.

Portland’s players have clearly now taken on Giovanni Savarese’s philosophies and they are paying dividends. They come into this one off the back of last weekend’s 3-2 win at Colorado Rapids, with Swedish striker Samuel Armenteros netting a brace.

LA Galaxy will be looking to their own Swedish striker to try and guide them to victory here. Zlatan Ibrahimovic returned from suspension by scoring twice in Wednesday night’s home clash with FC Dallas. However, those goals weren’t enough as LA fell 3-2.

The Galaxy have now lost five of their last seven games and sit eighth in the West heading into the weekend. Sigi Schmid’s men have more than enough quality to be performing better than they are. They just need to start putting a few good results together. Winning at Portland on Saturday would go a long way to helping.

This will be their second meeting of the season after the Galaxy beat the Timbers 2-1 on the opening weekend in Giovanni Savarese’s first MLS game as a head coach. However, Portland did win the only league clash at Providence Park last term, winning 3-1.

Portland Timbers 2-1 LA Galaxy: Both teams have plenty of attacking threats, even with key international absences. Portland are on an incredible run and don’t look set to drop their form here. The Galaxy had a tough time midweek and need to try and shake off the disappointment quickly. However, it’s hard to see them stopping the Timbers, who should make it seven wins on the bounce.

Portland Timbers vs LA Galaxy: Preview

Portland Timbers take on LA Galaxy on Sunday afternoon at Providence Park. The Western Conference sides are both on an inconsistent run of form. The game has been moved forward two hours due to the forecasted extreme heat.

The Timbers come into this one having drawn away at Houston. They have only lost one in their last six, but have picked up just seven points from 18 on offer.

Portland are sitting comfortably in the top six and still have a realistic chance of pushing to top the West. They are reliant on the form of Diego Valeri, who produced the goods once again last time out.

LA Galaxy have not had a good season by any stretch of the imagination. They are seven points outside of the top six but there is still time to close that gap.

They come into this game without a win in their last six. Galaxy are looking to avoid losing three away games on the bounce for the first time in four years.

LA have conceded 15 goals in those last six games. If results go against them this weekend they could find themselves bottom of the Western Conference.

Portland Timbers vs LA Galaxy: Prediction

Portland Timbers 2-1 LA Galaxy – Given the current form of LA Galaxy ahead of this game a defeat at the hands of Portland looks likely. However, the heat and conditions are going to play a big part in this one. The pace of the game could well be slower than usual and both sets of players will be wary of conditions.

Match Preview

Portland Timbers face LA Galaxy in one of the weekend’s standout MLS fixtures on Saturday evening as two of the league’s in-form sides go head-to-head at Providence Park.

Portland have been in solid form of late, going unbeaten in nine games. They saw off their arch rivals Seattle on Sunday and will be in fine spirits off the back of that result.

The Timbers enter the match in sixth place in the West and will be looking to remain unbeaten to keep their playoff hopes intact, with 12 games left to play after the weekend.

Portland Timbers vs Seattle Sounders - Portland Celebrate

They have won four of their last five at home and will look to put a strong LA Galaxy side to the sword here as they look to continue climbing the table.

However, the Galaxy are a side high in confidence and won’t be expecting to leave Portland empty-handed come the end of play on Saturday.

Bruce Arena’s men have won three in a row and are making a real charge at the title. They are eight points behind league leaders Dallas and know they must win as many games as possible to stand a chance of finishing in front of the Texans.

Winning games away from home has proven tough for LA over the last two seasons, but they did beat Seattle 1-0 on the road two weeks ago and will be hoping for another successful trip to the north-west here.

This will be the second clash between the pair this term. The reverse fixture ended 1-1 at StubHub Center back in April. The Galaxy have not won in Portland in four years.

Team News

Portland have just the one injury concern to worry about heading into the weekend as Darren Mattocks is ruled out with a hamstring injury. Caleb Porter has had to put up with a lot of injuries this term but his squad is looking healthy at a key part of the campaign. Alvas Powell is one booking away from suspension and needs to watch his step.

LA Galaxy will remain without Robbie Rogers for this one, while Ashley Cole is also unlikely to be available for selection again after sitting out with a hamstring problem for a couple of weeks. Ariel Lassiter is a doubt and Steven Gerrard may also miss this one after failing to train outside this week.

Key Points

Portland Timbers’ form: W/D/D/D/W

LA Galaxy’s form: D/D/W/W/W

Key Stat: Form – Portland are unbeaten in their last nine MLS matches (W4 D5).

Key Player: Diego Valeri – Portland will need their star players to be at their best if they are to get past a strong LA side on Saturday. They will look to Valeri for inspiration yet again. He bagged two goals in the win over Seattle last time out and will hope to build on that with another fine performance here.

Score Prediction

Portland Timbers 2-2 LA Galaxy – Goals are expected on Saturday in a game between two in-form sides looking to keep momentum building as the playoff edge ever closer. LA have won three on the spin but may find it tough to break down a Portland side that hasn’t lost in two months. A score draw looks likely, though this should be entertaining.

Match Preview

Portland Timbers host MLS Cup holders LA Galaxy at Providence Park this Sunday night in the final game of the second gameweek of the new season.

The Timbers began their MLS 2015 season with a 0-0 draw against Real Salt Lake last weekend, getting their first point on the board with their fourth straight MLS clean sheet a major plus for the team.

LA Galaxy picked up where they left off last campaign, winning 2-0 at home to Chicago Fire to open the 2015 season on Friday night and will be looking to make it two from two as they travel to Portland.

The Timbers are unbeaten in their last five home games and will hope they can make home advantage count to avoid this run coming to an end against the reigning champions.

Galaxy haven’t won on the road in their last six attempts and this is a trend Bruce Arena will hope they can halt this weekend, but they haven’t beaten the Timbers away from home in their last three meetings, and face a real tough task against their Western Conference rivals.

Portland head coach Caleb Porter will be hoping his side can up their game and ensure nothing is made easy for the Galaxy this weekend as they will want to show that they’re capable of upsetting any challengers who make the trip to Providence Park.

The Western Conference already has four teams on three points and the Timbers cannot afford to fall behind the early pace-setters if they are to push for a playoff spot this season.

LA Galaxy will want to ensure they maintain their winning start and they will also want to win more away games this season to send out a message to those looking to challenge them for their MLS Cup title.

Team News

Portland Timbers have three major injury concerns out for a large proportion of the season as Will Johnson (broken leg), Diego Valeri and Ben Zemanski (both torn ACL) are all set to miss the opening months of the new season. They could also be without Diego Chara (bruised calf).

LA Galaxy look set to be blessed with a fully fit squad and as we know squad depth is majorly important for success. Jose Villarreal, who opened Galaxy’s account for 2015, will be under the spotlight after his impressive first performance of the season and will hope to retain his starting place on the left side of midfield. Jaime Penedo did not play in last week’s opener but he could step back in between the sticks as Brian Rowe had a couple of shaky moments in that 2-0 win.

Key Points

Portland Timber’s form: D

LA Galaxy’s form: W

Key Stat: Goalfest – These two sides have scored ten between them in their last three meetings and we could be in for a treat if we are to see a similar game to previous ties.

Key Player: Gyasi Zardes – The pacy forward has added pressure to provide this season following the retirement of Landon Donovan and he will be looking to get off the mark on Sunday night.

Score Prediction

Portland Timbers 1-2 LA Galaxy – The Galaxy’s squad depth and lack of injuries compared to their opponents will surely be a factor this weekend and their firepower up top should see them make it two wins from two.
