Match Preview

New York Red Bulls play host to Columbus Crew on Sunday afternoon in the penultimate round of MLS regular season fixtures.

The Red Bulls are in contention to win the Eastern Conference, but are level on points with rivals NYCFC, so their remaining two games are huge.

New York come into this tie having overcome Philadelphia in an exhilarating 3-2 home win. Their form at Red Bull Arena has been nothing short of incredible, 11 wins from 13 games.

This is a game Jesse Marsch will be expecting his side to win, but he will have his players warned that any previous result means nothing once the game gets underway.

Columbus Crew are in 8th place, six points behind the top six and this looks like a season of disappointment for their fans.

Crew have won just twice and only picked up ten points on the road this season. That has all-but ultimately cost them throughout the regular season and they will need to rebuild and go again in the 2017 campaign.

This season has been a far cry from Crew’s 2015 campaign but they still have a huge part to play in the final standings of the 2016 season and they will have the backing of plenty of RBNY’s rivals.

Columbus Crew haven’t had much luck with injuries either, as Matt Pacifici, Ben Swanson, Cedrick Mabwati, Tyson Wahl, Waylon Francis are all out, while Federico Higuain and Conor Casey are both doubts

Competition: Major League Soccer – New York Red Bulls vs. New England Revolution

Venue: Red Bull Arena – Sunday, August 28 – 14:30 ET (19:30 BST)

Match Odds: NY Red Bulls 4/7 – Draw 3/1 – Montreal 4/1

Match Preview

New York Red Bulls welcome Eastern Conference rivals New England Revolution to Red Bull Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Jesse Marsch’s side have been in strong form and are unbeaten in their last eight regular season games, they will be feeling confident of extending that run here.

Red Bulls come into this one off the back of their disappointing 2-2 draw away at DC. Although the game was disrupted early on due to the weather, NYRB had gone on to lead 2-0, but threw three points away to a DC side who showed great spirit to turn things around.

New York are six points off top spot in the East and will be looking to finish the season in the highest position possible. They have eight regular season games remaining and if they carry on this unbeaten run they have a great chance of topping the East.

MLS: New York Red Bulls vs. New York City FC - Red Bulls Celebrate

New England Revolution are having a season to forget, but they still have plenty of games ahead of them to push their way above the red line. They’re currently sitting 8th, two points behind the top six.

Jay Heaps will be eager for his side to end their five game winless run here but will know how tough this tie is going to be.

The Revs drew their last outing 0-0 away at San Jose, that result ended a four game losing streak. They now need to build upon that and take a positive result in this one.

New England haven’t won in their last six attempts on the road and face a Red Bulls side who are proving to be tough to beat at home.

Score Prediction

New York Red Bulls 3-1 New England Revolution – Given the form of these two sides it is difficult to see anything other than a win for Red Bulls. New England have struggled for large parts of the regular season and although they ended their losing run last time out it looks set to be another tough one to take for their fans.

It’s the Hudson River Derby this Sunday as New York Red Bulls host rivals New York City FC at Red Bull Arena in a huge Eastern Conference battle between two fierce rivals.

New York Red Bulls welcome City for the first time this season, with the previous two meetings both coming at Yankee Stadium. The sides are tied with a win a piece so far this term. The latest meeting ended with a 2-0 loss for the Red Bulls in a result not many would have predicted after they thrashed City 7-0 back in April.

That 2-0 defeat a month ago was also the first time NYCFC managed to overcome their local enemies so this clash couldn’t be more finely poised.

Jesse Marsch’s side come into this one struggling for form, with just one win in their last six outings. The Red Bulls are sitting third on 28 points, trailing NYCFC, who lead the Eastern Conference, by five points going into the weekend.

It is away form that is troubling New York Red Bulls as they have been on a solid run at home. They’ve won six of their last seven ties and kept a clean sheet in their last six at Red Bull Arena.

New York City FC vs New York Red Bulls

New York City FC come into this one with the bragging rights over their rivals, as previously mentioned and sitting topof the East will only boost morale. But there is plenty of work to do to if they are to take all three points here.

Patrick Vieira will be pleased with how his side responded to their 3-1 away loss to SKC as they bounced straight back to winning ways with a 3-1 win over Montreal last time out.

NYCFC had the look of a side who believed they could overcome any opponent in that win last weekend, they were under pressure for large parts of the game but defended well and countered with great precision.

The New York City players will be hoping to further avenge the pain they put their fans through in that 7-0 loss at Yankee Stadium with a win in their rivals backyard this time around.

Team News

New York Red Bulls have just two injury concerns heading into the derby as Kemar Lawrence and Gideon Baah both remain out.

New York City have a bit of an injury crisis on their hands at the moment, as they could be without as many as six for this one. Connor Brandt, Steven Mendoza, Shannon Gomez, Ronald Matarrita and Khiry Shelton all look set to miss out, while Andoni Iraola has been training after suffering his ankle injury last weekend but remains a doubt.

Key Points

New York Red Bulls’ last five: D/L/D/W/D

New York City FC’s last five: W/W/W/L/W

Key Stat: Home form – New York Red Bulls have won six of their last seven home games in Major League Soccer.

Key Player: Sacha Kljestan – The Red Bulls midfielder has a huge role for the derby. He will be tasked with keeping the inform NYCFC midfielders quiet. If he can stop the likes of Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo bossing the game his side have a great chance of winning this tie. Possibly an even more important task for the Red Bulls midfielder will be to keep service to the City stars to a minimum.

MLS: New York Red Bulls vs. Houston Dynamo Sacha Kljestan

Score Prediction

New York Red Bulls 2-2 New York City FC – This has the makings of a classic tie. Both sides are in form in one way or another. With Red Bulls looking solid at home and with City winning six of their last seven outings it’s difficult to see either side losing. RBNY know they have to win this tie to close the gap on their neighbours, while a draw for NYCFC will see them remain top of the East beyond this weekend. Score draw.

New York Red Bulls welcome Eastern Conference rivals Orlando City to Red Bull Arena on Wednesday evening in one of six regular season midweek games.

The Red Bulls saw their five-game home winning streak come to an end at the weekend as they only managed a 0-0 draw with Portland.

That result has left New York Red Bulls without a win in their last four, drawing two and losing two. They are currently fourth in the East, trailing top spot by six points.

New York have been very tough to break down at Red Bull Arena and have kept five consecutive clean sheets. They will be feeling confident of getting back to winning ways in this tie.

Orlando City have struggled for form on the road in recent weeks and their winless away run has extended to six games.

OCSC come into this one off the back of their 0-0 draw with Houston and have now managed just one win in their last six outings.

Orlando are now sitting eighth in the East, one point outside the playoff places and three points off the Red Bulls heading into this tie, so a victory would push them right back into the mix.

Worryingly for Orlando, they have conceded at least two goals in their last six games on the road. They’ll know they cannot afford to give the Red Bulls anything to boost their confidence early in this tie otherwise they risk seeing their struggles on the road worsen.

New York Red Bulls vs Orlando City

Team News

New York Red Bulls could still be without as many as three players as Damien Perrinelle, Kemar Lawrence and Tyler Adam are all carrying injuries. Aurelien Collin and Chris Duvall are both set to return after they served their suspensions last time out.

Orlando City have three injury concerns heading into this tie, as Pedro Ribeiro and Kaka are both still expected to be out, while Rafael Ramos is a doubt.

Key Points

New York Red Bulls’ last five: W/L/D/L/D

Orlando City’s last five: D/D/W/L/D

Key Stat: New York Red Bulls are unbeaten in their last six home matches in Major League Soccer, winning five and drawing the other.

Key Player: Bradley Wright-Phillips – The Red Bulls forward has netted five in his last six games at Red Bull Arena. He will be eager to get back amongst the goals here after going two games without hitting the back of the net.

Match Preview

New York Red Bulls host Toronto FC in a key Eastern Conference clash between two side’s chasing top spot as we approach the midpoint of the season.

The Red Bulls have recovered from a horrendous start and proved so with last weekend’s emphatic 7-0 derby win over New York City – the joint-biggest winning margin in MLS history.

Jesse Marsch will be delighted with the recovery his side have made and will now be urging his team to continue to build. They are third in the East coming into this one, just three points behind Philadelphia at the top.

New York City FC vs New York Red Bulls

The Red Bulls are rightly favourites for this, having only lost one of their last six matches. They’ve won three in a row at home and will be out for revenge over Toronto here.

The Reds are travelling to Red Bull Arena for the second time this season. The two sides met on the opening weekend of the campaign, with Toronto earning a 2-0 win following a resolute defensive display.

Greg Vanney’s men looked to be flying after taking 11 points from seven consecutive away games to start the year. However, they’ve only won one of their last four – a far from impressive return considering all those games were at home.

They come into the weekend level on points with New York and know there is time to recover from a mini slump with 22 games still to play.

This will be the second of three meeting between the two sides this season. Toronto’s win at Red Bull Arena on the opening day was their first there since 2008 but they would love nothing more than to make it back-to-back victories in New York here.

Team News

The Red Bulls will not be able to call on the services of Damien Perrinelle yet again, while Ryan Meara remains a doubt. Jesse Marsch will be relieved to have a much shorter injury list and the challenge will now be to keep the best XI on the field for as long as possible.

Toronto are without two key players as Benoit Cheyrou and Jozy Altidore are sidelined. Marky Delgado is struggling with a hamstring problem and is a doubt.

Toronto’s last five: L/W/L/D/D

Key Stat: Three times lucky? Toronto are looking to record three-straight wins over the Red Bulls for the

Key Player: Bradley Wright-Phillips – The English forward struggled to begin with this season but has now scored five in his last six and enjoys playing against Toronto. He has scored in three of his last five games against the Canadian side.

New York Red Bulls 3-1 Toronto – Toronto might have already won at Red Bull Arena this season but New York are in much better shape this time around and will surely build on last weekend’s 7-0 win by picking up three more points here. The home fans will be starting to believe they can achieve big things this season and a win here would be another boost to those aspirations.

MLS Preview and Prediction: New York Red Bulls vs Chicago Fire

Competition: Major League Soccer – New York Red Bulls vs. Chicago Fire

Venue: Red Bull Arena – Wednesday, May 18 – 19:30 ET (00:30 BST)

Match Odds: NY Red Bulls 8/15 – Draw 16/5 – Chicago 5/1

Match Preview

New York Red Bulls welcome Chicago Fire to Red Bull Arena on Wednesday night in the first of two fixtures for both Eastern Conference sides this week.

The Red Bulls need to start climbing the table. They are eighth in the East heading into this game but are only six points off the top of the conference at this stage.

They must make the most of this double gameweek, with a tricky game away at fierce rivals New York City coming up on Saturday following Wednesday’s clash with the Fire.

New York Red Bulls vs Orlando City

Jesse Marsch watched his side fall 2-0 at DC last time out, ending a three-game unbeaten run and he will not accept anything less than three points from his players here in what looks like a winnable fixture.

The Fire, however, will be out to seal three points for themselves. They are in poor form, having lost back-to-back games away from home coming into this and are now winless in five.

Head coach Veljko Paunovic knows his side need to start scoring more regularly if they are to have any chance of climbing off the foot of the East. They have netted just five in their last eight games since scoring three in the opening day defeat to NYCFC.

A 2-0 loss at New England last week saw Chicago fail to keep a clean sheet for the fourth consecutive game and keeping out the Red Bulls at home seems an unlikely feat.

This will be the first of two meetings between the sides this season. They met three times late last season, with the Red Bulls winning both of the most recent meetings after Chicago won at Toyota Park in August.

Team News

The Red Bulls will be without Damien Perrinelle once again, although he is the only certain absentee as backup goalkeeper Ryan Meara is close to returning from a long-term injury. Gonzalo Veron is back to full fitness and could start here.

Chicago Fire will be without John Goossens for the trip to Red Bull Arena, while Collin Fernandez is also unlikely to feature as he is struggling with an ankle strain. Gilberto will be back in contention to start up top, with Kennedy Igboananike likely to start on the wing.

Key Points

New York Red Bulls’ last five: L/W/W/D/L

Chicago Fire’s last five: D/L/D/L/L

Key Stat: Goals, goals, goals – There have been 36 goals in the last eight meeting between these two sides – an average of 4.5 per game.

Key Player: Sacha Kljestan – The Red Bulls midfielder has probably been the team’s best player so far this term. He so often proves influential when it matters most and will look to break down a Chicago defence struggling to keep sides out at the moment.

Score Prediction

New York Red Bulls 3-1 Chicago Fire – This should be another high-scoring game between two sides that are desperate for three points as they look to climb the Eastern Conference. The Red Bulls are a strong outfit at home and will prove tough to beat here, while Chicago have yet to win away this season. A home victory looks likely, though both will expect to find the net.

The New York Red Bulls have endured a tough start to the 2016 season, but they offered fans some hope when they came from behind to beat Orlando City 3-2 on Sunday night at Red Bull Arena.

A very early Cyle Larin goal would have worried supporters but the team battled well in the second-half as a Mike Grella strike was followed by a Bradley Wright-Phillips brace to put the home side in control.

Karl Ouimette scored an unfortunate own goal with six minutes remaining to set up a nervy finish but the Red Bulls secured three important points to move them off the foot of the Eastern Conference and into eighth.

Orlando sit in fourth place but have not won in three now and will need to rediscover their form quickly to stay in contention.

Match Preview

New York Red Bulls welcome Sporting Kansas City to Red Bull Arena on Saturday night with the hosts looking to end a sorry run of form which has seen them lose three of their first four matches of the new season.

They are yet to keep a clean sheet and all of their goals this season came in the 4-3 win over Houston Dynamo. Furthering their problems, Felipe will miss the game through suspension and star striker Bradley Wright-Phillips is yet to score this term.

However, the most worrying problems seem to be the lack of defensive options available as four first-team defenders are injured in some way and Karl Ouimette is the only fit central defender available to Jesse Marsch.

Jesse Marsch New York Red Bulls

Turning things around this weekend looks a tough ask for the Red Bulls, though the home support should give their chances a significant boost.

Sporting Kansas City on the other hand started the season with a 100% record until the 2-1 loss to Real Salt Lake last weekend.

They have so far scored in every game and have quickly set themselves a good platform for success this season.

Their early-season form will need to carry on if SKC are to challenge at the top end of the Western Conference and they will fancy their chances of beating an injury-plagued Red Bulls team here.

Embed from Getty Images

They have a huge upcoming month with three of their next four fixtures away from home. So this clash is the start of a tough run for the Kansas City squad.

These sides met just once last term, playing out a 1-1 draw in Kansas City. The Red Bulls won the most recent meeting at Red Bull Arena in the 2014 MLS Cup Playoffs, before SKC were transferred back over to the Western Conference.

Team News

New York Red Bulls will be without three first team defenders as their defensive crisis continues to cause Jesse Marsch serious selection problems. Damien Perrinelle, Gideon Baah and Ronald Zubar are all still out, while Kemar Lawrence is a doubt with a knee injury picked up last week. Gonzalo Veron is also out and Felipe is suspended after being sent off against New England Revolution.

Sporting Kansas City are missing Justin Mapp and defensive star Matt Besler. Paulo Nagamura is a doubt with a calf strain.

Key Points

New York Red Bulls’ form: L/L/W/L

Sporting Kansas City’s form: W/W/W/L

Key Stat: Including postseason meetings, SKC have failed to beat the Red Bulls on the last six occasions. The Red Bulls have won four of those last six meetings.

Key Player: Dom Dwyer – English-born striker Dwyer is the lone attacker in SKC’s current system and the impressive start to the season has shown signs that he will have plenty of service this year. It’s only a matter of time before they start flying in regularly for Dwyer and he will be a threat here.

Score Prediction

New York Red Bulls 2-2 Sporting Kansas City – After a good start from SKC and a poor start from Red Bulls, this clash is hard to call. We are expecting goals and quite an even battle. However, the Red Bulls’ defensive options are limited and SKC will set out to earn three points. A score draw looks likely, though this really could go either way.

The New York Red Bulls managed to pick up their first points of the season in a thrilling clash with the Houston Dynamo on Saturday night, winning 4-3 at Red Bull Arena much to the delight of the home fans.

The Dynamo came into the game in excellent early form and threatened Luis Robles’ goal throughout. They twice led the contest but were eventually beaten by a resilient Red Bulls team.

Will Bruin netted twice for Houston, with Alex scoring the Dynamo’s other goal. But it was New York’s Felipe Martins who stole the headlines as he netted two fine late goals to seal all three points.

Sacha Kljestan and Mike Grella netted New York’s first two of the evening. But Felipe’s excellence made the difference in the end. He drew the Red Bulls level in the 77th minute with a curling strike from distance and then went one better with a stunning free-kick six minutes later.

Match Preview

New York Red Bulls welcome Houston Dynamo to Red Bull Arena on Saturday as they look to finally get off the mark in the 2016 Major League Soccer regular season.

The reigning Supporters’ Shield holders have endured a very tough opening two games so far this season and are yet to score a goal. They lost their opener at home against Toronto and last weekend fell to a 3-0 thumping away at Montreal.

Although it is early doors this is still a worrying factor for Jesse Marsch and he will have his side fully prepared to take on an inform Houston side. Red Bulls are currently propping up the Eastern Conference and nothing short of a win here will be good enough.

If the Red Bulls are to challenge for the Supporters’ Shield again this campaign they are going to need to be far more impressive than they have been so far. It isn’t all doom and gloom as we are still early into the new campaign but Marsch’s side cannot afford another lapsed performance here and they will already have some impatient fans heading into the tie.

Sebastian Giovinco Penalty

Houston come to Red Bull Arena in a prime position. They are unbeaten in their opening two outings and have looked impressive.

They come into the tie off the back of their amazing 5-0 demolition job over FC Dallas last weekend, a result that not only shocked fans but sent out a message to the rest of the Western Conference.

Owen Coyle will be delighted to see his side sitting third in the West but will be more than aware of how difficult this tie can be.

Dynamo have really struggled on the road in recent times in MLS and they won just twice away from home last season. Starting with an away win here would be an enormous boost.

Team News

New York Red Bulls have just the one injury concern heading into this tie as Damien Perrinelle remains out.

Houston Dynamo have five injury concerns. Collen Warner is out, while Tyler Deric, DaMarcus Beasley, Giles Barnes and Cristian Maidana are all doubts.

Key Points

New York Red Bulls’ form: L/L

Houston Dynamo’s form: D/W

Key Stat: New York Red Bulls are unbeaten in their last 13 home matches against Houston in all competitions.

Key Player: Sacha Klještan – The NYRB midfielder can help lead his side here after their poor start to the season. If he can get on the ball, control the game and keep things simple this weekend it will enable his teammates to regain some of their lost confidence.

Score Prediction

New York Red Bulls 2-1 Houston Dynamo – Red Bulls to continue their good run of form at home against Houston and pick up their first win of the season in a very competitive tie. Dynamo have conceded at least two in their last six away outings and that combined with their poor away form will likely cost them here, despite a good start to the campaign.
