Premier League Preview and Prediction: Arsenal vs Burnley

Competition: Premier League – Arsenal  vs. Burnley

Venue: Emirates Stadium – Sunday, January 22 – 14:15 GMT (09:15 ET)

Match Odds: Arsenal 1/5 – Draw 11/2 – Burnley 12/1

Match Preview

Arsenal welcome Burnley to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon in a game which The Gunners will be expecting to win.

Arsene Wenger’s side are currently in fourth place, eight points off top spot. Wenger needs to get his side on a run of form to ensure they don’t drift too far out of the title race and maintain a game from the Manchester clubs chasing the top four.

This should be a relatively straightforward tie for Arsenal, but they will know they cannot afford to underestimate Burnley. If they can get an early goal and create a good atmosphere around the ground, they should get the job done.

Burnley have been in good form of late. Sean Dyche’s side have picked up nine points from the last five games and are sitting 10th.

The Clarets come into this one having progressed in the FA Cup after their replay win against Sunderland. Their last Premier League outing was an impressive 1-0 win against Southampton.

Burnley have struggled on the road this season though. They have lost eight of their last nine on their travels and the games don’t come much tougher than this. If they can put on a defensive display like they did against Manchester United, they stand a good chance of a positive result.

Team News

Arsenal’s injury woes continue. They could be without up to seven players for this one as Santi Cazorla, Mathieu Debuchy, Yaya Sanogo, Theo Walcott and Per Mertesacker are all expected to remain out, while Olivier Giroud is a doubt. Mohammed Elneny is away on international duty with Eygpt at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Burnley have just the three injury concerns as Dean Marney, Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Scott Arfield are all doubts.

Key Points

Arsenal’s last five: L/W/W/D/W

Burnley’s last five: L/W/W/L/W

Key Stat: Arsenal have won their last five games against Burnley in all competitions.

Key Player: Alexis Sanchez – Arsenal need to get this man tied down to a long-term contract as soon as possible. The Chilean has netted 14 times this campaign and is the Premier League’s joint top scorer. He will be expected to cause Burnley trouble here.

Score Prediction

Arsenal 3-1 Burnley – Arsenal to pick up a comfortable three points and continue their winning run against Burnley. The Gunners have struggled to keep clean sheets this campaign and Burnley are capable of causing problems, but this one will be a step too far for Dyche’s men.

Premier League Preview and Prediction: Burnley vs Manchester City

Competition: Premier League – Burnley  vs. Manchester City

Venue: Turf Moor – Saturday, November 26 – 12:30 GMT (07:30 ET)

Match Odds: Burnley 17/2 – Draw 17/4 – Manchester City 30/100

Match Preview

Burnley welcome Manchester City to Turf Moor on Saturday lunchtime in a game that looks set to be far from straightforward for either side.

Sean Dyche will be disappointed with the manor they lost their last game. The 4-0 drubbing away at West Brom wasn’t a reflection on how they have performed since their return to the Premier League. It is a result they need to quickly get over and bounce back from to avoid it being the start of a dull run of form.

Other than that result, The Clarets have been in solid form of late, picking up seven points from 15 in their last five games. This is going to be a real test of their resolve, but we have already seen how frustrating Burnley can be to play against this season.

Burnley have reason to believe they can pick up a favourable result against City, given a number of their impressive home results this season. The main thing for them in this game is to avoid being caught out early on, otherwise they could be in for a long afternoon.

Manchester City come into this game having won 2-1 in a cagey affair away at Palace. The return of Yaya Toure was welcomed as he netted both goals, which would have sent out a message of warning to the rest of the league, no club needs telling how dangerous the Ivorian powerhouse is.

Pep Guardiola will be pleased with the power his City side have been playing with and knows it’s only a matter of time before everything clicks into place. They’re creating well but just need to be more clinical in the final third.

City have to win this game, there are significant fixtures in the race for the title this weekend and they cannot afford to be off the pace at the start of December.

Guardiola’s side have been travelling well. They’ve won their last five away games in the Premier League and will expect to make it six on the bounce here. Worryingly for City they are leaking goals at the back, which will give Burnley hope heading into this one, but a win looks likely for The Citizens even if it is a tight affair.

Team News

Burnley have no injury concerns heading into this game. The decision Dyche has to make is how to set up to prevent being picked apart by City. He will more than likely pack out the midfield and aim for Burnley to break the game up.

Manchester City are set to be without captain Vincent Kompany as he has picked up another injury, which begs the question, will he get any luck and a run in the side? Fabian Delph is City’s only other injury concern. Guardiola will be expecting an intensive performance from his players, they’ll be looking to starve Burnley of the ball and will need their midfield to be energetic in order to do so.

Key Points

Burnley’s last five: L/W/D/W/L

Manchester City’s last five: D/D/W/D/W

Key Stat: One for the road – Manchester City have won their last five Premier League away games.

Key Player: Tom Heaton – The Burnley ‘keeper has already thwarted one Manchester club this season with an astonishing performance, he will need to be at his best once again if his side are to take a positive result here. Expect him to be busy.

Embed from Getty Images

Score Prediction

Burnley 1-3 Manchester City – Burnley to fall short in a game they can be forgiven for doing so. Manchester City have so much firepower in their squad that a win looks the most likely outcome. Guardiola will be disappointed if his side are to concede once again, but the three points will be the most important thing for him and his squad.

Premier League Preview and Prediction: West Brom vs Burnley

Competition: Premier League – West Brom vs. Burnley

Venue: The Hawthorns – Monday, November 21 – 20:00 GMT (15:00 ET)

Match Odds: West Brom 10/11 – Draw 23/10 – Burnley 7/2

Match Preview

West Bromwich Albion welcome Burnley to The Hawthorns for the Premier League’s Monday night clash as both sides return to action following the international break.

The Baggies most recent outing saw them pick up a 2-1 away win at last year’s champions, Leicester City – all the more impressive considering the Foxes hadn’t suffered a home league defeat for 20 games.

That win would have given West Brom a huge confidence boost following a run of five games without a win going into it.

Tony Pulis will hope his side have now turned a corner and can make a real challenge to finish in the top half of the table this season – a win here would be the first time they’ve recorded consecutive victories this season.

Confidence will be equally high in the Burnley camp after a dramatic last minute winner from Ashley Barnes secured a 3-2 win at home to Crystal Palace last time out.

The Clarets are undefeated in their last three games (W2, D1) and a win here would lift them into ninth place, sending out a real statement to anyone who thought they’d be this year’s whipping boys.

Embed from Getty Images

Sean Dyche will be hoping his side can improve on their poor away record however, as results have been hard to come by away from Turf Moor (D1, L3).

The last time these two sides played each other, it ended in a 2-2 draw at Turf Moor back in February 2015. The previous meeting at The Hawthorns saw West Brom run out comfortable 4-0 winners in September 2014.

Team News

West Brom could still be without both Saido Berahino (fitness) and Nacer Chadli (knee surgery), while striker Salomon Rondon should return to action following a hamstring injury.

Burnley defender Stephen Ward is a doubt as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury which kept him out of the home win against Crystal Palace a few weeks ago.

Key Points

West Brom’s last five: D/D/L/L/W

Burnley’s last five: L/L/W/D/W

Key Stat: Burnley haven’t won at The Hawthorns since 1969. They’ve played there on ten occasions since then in all competitions, drawing twice and losing the other eight.

Key Player: Matt Phillips – He scored the winner for the Baggies at Leicester and really impressed. He’ll be looking to build on that with another fine performance here.

Score Prediction

West Brom 1-1 Burnley – West Brom and Burnley will be confident from their previous results and a draw would probably be a reasonable outcome for both sides. Score draw.

Premier League Preview and Prediction: Southampton vs Burnley

Competition: Major League Soccer – Southampton vs. Burnley

Venue: St Mary’s Stadium – Sunday, October 16 – 16:00 BST (11:00 ET)

Match Odds: Southampton 4/11 – Draw 18/5 – Burnley 8/1

Match Preview

Southampton welcome Burnley to St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon as they look to stretch their unbeaten run to four in the Premier League.

The Saints drew 0-0 at Leicester before the international break but had won back-to-back games against Swansea and West Ham before that and look to be improving under Claude Puel.

They enter the weekend in 10th place but have a squad capable of challenging for European football once again. They need to be winning games like this one to prove they are a force to be reckoned with.

Embed from Getty Images

Southampton are unbeaten in eight Premier League home games coming into the match but have already had to settle for frustrating home draws against Watford and Sunderland this season, so they must be more clinical in front of their own supporters.

For Burnley, it’s a tough away game in which little is expected of them. Sean Dyche’s men have yet to score a goal away from home this season and are taking on a Saints team that hasn’t conceded in 540 minutes of league action.

Burnley were harshly beaten by Arsenal thanks to a controversial late Koscielny goal in their last game but they beat Watford 2-0 before that and need to continue fighting for each other if they are to stay up this year.

Embed from Getty Images

They come into this week’s action in 14th place and need to try and stay out of the bottom three for as long as possible to keep pressure off the squad.

This will be just the third Premier League game between these two sides, with each team winning once when they met over the course of the 2014/15 campaign.

Team News

Southampton will be without fullback’s Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares, who join Florin Gardos, Jeremy Pied and Sofiane Boufal on the injury list. Charlie Austin is expected to lead the attack ahead of Shane Long once again.

Burnley will be without star striker Andre Gray, who is serving the third of his four-game suspension this weekend. Ashley Barnes is Sean Dyche’s only injury worry.

Key Points

Southampton’s last five: D/L/W/W/D

Burnley’s last five: L/D/L/W/L

Key Stat: Southampton are unbeaten in their last eight home games in the Premier League and have beaten Burnley in each of the last three meetings at St Mary’s.

Key Player: Dusan Tadic – The Serbian playmaker has been in good form for club and country and helped his nation to victory by scoring in both games over the international break. He’ll be tasked with breaking down the Burnley backline on Sunday and should succeed in doing so, given his excellent vision.

Embed from Getty Images

Score Prediction

Southampton 1-0 Burnley – The Saints have a great defensive run going and are unlikely to concede to a team that has yet to score an away goal in the league this term. There might not be many goals here, but the Saints are a stronger side and should have enough to seal all three points.

Venue: Turf Moor – Sunday, October 2 – 16:30 BST (11:30 ET)

Match Odds: Burnley 15/2 – Draw 19/5 – Arsenal 4/11

Match Preview

Burnley welcome Arsenal to Turf Moor in the final game of the Premier League weekend in a tie that has the makings of a cracker.

Burnley will be full of confidence. They were given little hope by many ahead of their game against Watford last time out, but won 2-0 and picked up a valuable three points.

Sean Dyche’s side sit 13th, already four points ahead of the bottom three. They must make Turf Moor a difficult place to visit to ensure they pick up as many points as possible early in the season.

Burnley know they’re in for a tough one this weekend. They have lost their last four games against Arsenal, but they will be looking to frustrate their opposition here and come away with a positive result.

Arsenal couldn’t be more confident heading into this tie. They destroyed Chelsea last weekend, ending a long winless run against their London rivals and will be looking to mount a title challenge off the back of that result.

Arsene Wenger will be pleased with how his side have performed over their last four league games, they have taken maximum points and scored 12 goals along the way.

Arsenal have to kick on and look to take all three points in games like this if they are to mount a successful title challenge this season.

The Gunners haven’t looked as dangerous and clinical in front of goal as they did last weekend for some time. If Burnley give them chances here they will be punished.

Team News

Burnley have just the one injury concern as Ashley Barnes looks set to remain out.

Arsenal still have a whole host of injuries. Aaron Ramsey, Danny Welbeck, Per Mertesacker, Carl Jenkinson, Olivier Giroud and Francis Coquelin are all expected to miss this tie.

Key Points

Burnley’s last five: W/L/D/L/W

Arsenal’s last five: D/W/W/W/W

Key Stat: Arsenal have won their last four matches against Burnley.

Key Player: Theo Walcott – The Englishman has been in fine form. He is thriving having Wenger’s confidence instilled in him and looks dangerous every time he comes forward.

Score Prediction

Burnley 1-3 Arsenal – This one looks like it has the makings of being one step too far for Burnley. They have looked bright in games this season and certainly don’t look set for struggles in the coming weeks so long as the squad remains fresh and morale stays high. Arsenal have to take all three points in this one to keep pace at the top.

Match Odds: Burnley 19/10 – Draw 11/5 – Watford 6/4

Match Preview

Burnley welcome Watford to Turf Moor on Monday evening in a history making tie, the first ever top flight meeting between these sides.

The Clarets have had a mixed bag of results in their opening five games and are sitting 16th in the table, they will be looking to get as many points on the board as early as possible to avoid being dragged into a relegation scrap.

Sean Dyche will be demanding more from his players even at this early stage. Their one win was a surprise result and it is these sort of games at home where they have to be looking to pick up points.

Burnley come into this one off the back of their 3-0 loss to Leicester, their second 3-0 loss of the season, goal difference can mean a lot not only for the standings, but also confidence. They have to tighten up at the back.

Watford will still be on cloud nine after their stunning 3-1 over United last weekend, they’ll be relishing this game and will feel like they can take on anyone at the moment.

However, it is important they’re not over-confident heading into this tie. It has been a good start to the season for Walter Mazzarri’s side but they have work to do to continue to build.

Watford have a poor record away at Burnley, they have not won in their last eight attempts, losing four and drawing four.

The Hornets have scored three or more goals in consecutive games in the Premier League for the first time. They now sit 9th and will be working towards remaining in the top ten for as long as possible.

Team News

Burnley have just the one injury concern ahead of this tie as Ashley Barnes is expected to be out.

Watford are expecting to be without Daryl Janmaat and Stefano Okaka, while there are some concerns over the fitness of Jerome Sinclair, Younes Kaboul and Jose Holebas.

Key Points

Burnley’s last five: L/W/L/D/L

Watford’s last five: D/L/L/W/W

Key Stat: This is the first ever top flight meeting between these two sides.

Key Player: Etienne Capoue – The Watford midfielder is in spectacular form. He has already netted four goals, the joint third highest total in the early stages of the Premier League season and as many as Burnley have managed altogether.

Score Prediction

Burnley 0-2 Watford – Burnley’s winless run to extend to four games. Although they have looked bright in stages this season they have scored just four goals in their five league games. Watford will be full of confidence and have too much firepower for Burnley.

2014/15 Premier League Season Review: Burnley

Premier League Final Position: 19th

Review

Burnley suffered with an array of problems that ultimately lead to an unsuccessful Premier League season. First of all, they struggled to put the ball in the back of the net, scoring fewer goals (28) than any other side. They also recorded the fewest wins (7) out of any team. The squad that Sean Dyche had at his disposal simply wasn’t prepared for life at the top level and Burnley’s lack of financial resources played a big role in determining the quality of players they could bring in. You cannot fault the work-rate, desire and commitment of the Clarets but they didn’t have the technical ability or clinical finishing required in front of goal in a cut-throat division. The squad is essentially a Championship level of quality and that’s why they came up just short in the end.

Best Moment

Winning 1-0 at home to Manchester City. It was a great moment for everyone involved with the club as the reigning champions were stunned at Turf Moor by a fantastic George Boyd strike. That goal helped Burnley to their first win for eight games and gave them a glimmer of hope that they could potentially avoid the drop.

Worst Moment

The 1-0 defeat at home to Leicester. The Clarets welcomed fellow relegation strugglers Leicester to Turf Moor for a crucial game. Matt Taylor had the chance to give Burnley the lead from the penalty spot but he struck the post with his effort. Then 59 seconds later, Jamie Vardy bundled in a winner for the Foxes which crushed Burnley’s realistic hopes of survival.

What to improve for the 2015/16 season…

Achieving an instant return to the Premier League is going to be tough for Burnley. It’s going to be a summer of transition for the Clarets and holding to their key assets won’t be easy. Danny Ings has already drawn attention from Liverpool and Tottenham, while his contract expires in June anyway, so it looks like he’s certain to leave. Sean Dyche could also be on the shortlist for clubs looking for a new manager, so they will do well to keep hold of him. The areas for improvement next season are obvious – score more goals and bring in suitable replacement for those heading out of the club.

Premier League Preview and Prediction: Aston Villa vs Burnley

Competition: Premier League – Aston Villa vs. Burnley

Venue: Villa Park – Sunday, May 24th – 15:00 BST (10:00 ET)

Match Odds: Aston Villa 21/20 – Draw 5/2 – Burnley 12/5

Match Preview

Aston Villa take on Burnley in the final game of the 2014/15 of the Premier League season and Burnley’s last appearance before their drop back to the Championship.

Tim Sherwood‘s appointment as Villa boss in February is one of the stories of the season and his rejuvenation of the side has seen them stay up.

Despite Villa’s escape from the drop last weekend’s 6-1 thumping by Southampton is one to forget and the Villans can end the season on a good note by heaping more misery on already relegated Burnley.

Christian Benteke hit form at the right time for Sherwood and his goals have played a major role in retaining top flight football for the club. He has scored 11 in his last ten games.

Embed from Getty Images

Burnley just haven’t had enough to avoid the drop this season and they were the first side to be drop back down to the Championship.

Sean Dyche‘s side have lost 19 games this season and it is not surprising they haven’t stayed up as winning just six games is not good enough.

They picked up a point last weekend against Stoke and the best they can hope for is a positive result here to avoid finishing at the foot of the table.

Embed from Getty Images

Danny Ings has been the best thing for the club this season and his form, although not enough to keep them up, will surely force a Premier League move during the transfer window. He has netted ten goals in 34 games and can give his fans something to cheer as their stay in the top flight comes to an end.

Team News

Aston Villa have five injury concerns. Kieran Richardson, Libor Kozák, Nathan Baker, Ciaran Clark and Chris Herd are all unavailable. Sherwood will hope his side play with freedom and put last weekend’s result behind them.

Burnley have two absentees with Kevin Long and Dean Marney out. Other than that, Dyche has a full selection and has the opportunity to give some of the less regular members of his squad a final run-out.

Key Points

Aston Villa’s last five: L/L/L/W/D

Burnley’s last five: L/L/L/W/D

Key Stat: Burnley have failed to score in seven of their last eight games.

Key Player: Christian Benteke – The Belgian powerhouse is who Villa fans need to thank for their survival and he is now tipped for a big summer move.

Aston Villa 2-0 Burnley – Not much joy for Burnley here as Villa will ease to a final day victory

Premier League Preview and Prediction: Burnley vs Leicester City

Venue: Turf Moor – Saturday April 25th – 15:00 BST (10:00 ET)

Match Odds: Burnley 7/5 – Draw 12/5 – Leicester 9/5

Match Preview

It’s Burnley vs. Leicester in the Premier League and it’s crunch time at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon as two of the bottom three battle in a huge match with both clubs’ future surely on the line in this one.

Sean Dyches’ Burnley have been so resilient of late, and have picked up some very impressive results at home over the course of the season with a win over Manchester City and draws against Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

They will be expecting to therefore beat lesser opposition in Leicester and the home fans will be expecting to win, especially as they beat champions Manchester City at Turf Moor last month. The win over the reigning champions is their only win in 12 games though – worrying form especially if you are staring down the barrel of relegation.

With questions still surrounding Danny Ings future, and Burnley resigned to the fact they will lose their star striker come the summer, they will need to beat Leicester to remain in the Premier League for another season at least. That’s because next summer see’s the new TV deals come into effect and they will give clubs like Burnley some financial backing to do some business.

If Burnley can win this it could leave Leicester City in a bit of a mess and derail their own safety ambitions so this is a huge clash.

The Foxes won’t be easy customers as they have been very impressive of late, and if they play like they have in the last three, they will definitely remain in the Premier League next season.

Leicester have given themselves a fantastic chance of escaping their bottom three by winning their last three on the spin and now only remain in the drop zone on goal difference behind Hull City. Another bonus is that they have a game in hand over their relegation rivals, but that is against Chelsea next week in a game the Blues can wrap up the title in, depending on their result against Arsenal.

The worrying form for Leicester is that they have only picked up 11 points from a possible 51 on the road this season. The away win at West Brom two weeks ago was their first since December.

Having scored seven in their last three games, Nigel Pearson’s side will be looking to keep hitting the back of the net, and outfox the Burnley backline to give themselves the best chance of survival.

Embed from Getty Images

After this game for Leicester they face just one more away from home and will play at the King Power Stadium in their other four remaining games, which gives them another huge boost with regards to staying up.

The reverse saw the two sides battle out for a 2-2 draw with Ross Wallace equalising late in stoppage time for the Clarets to deny Leicester City all three points.

Team News

Burnley will be without Ashley Barnes, who was sent off against Everton last week, as he serves a one match ban, plus Dean Marney is out as is Kevin Long, who will be out until the Autumn.

Leicester City have doubts over David Nugent and Marcin Wasilewski, with Richie De Laet expected to come in if Wasilewski is ruled out of the relegation clash.

Key Points

Burnley’s last five: W/L/D/L/L

Leicester’s last five: D/L/W/W/W

Key Stats: Burnley have not beaten Leicester in any of their last eight meetings, stretching back to August 2010. They have lost their last three home games against the Foxes, scoring just once.

Embed from Getty Images

Key Player: Leonardo Ulloa – The Argentine striker found his goalscoring touch against Swansea City last weekend and will be hoping to add to his tally of eight goals as he looks to try and reach double digits before the season is out.

Score Prediction

Burnley 1-2 Leicester City – Leicester City have some terrific quality and in the confidence they are in, they can inflict some serious damage to Burnley with goals coming from all angles. It’s difficult to see the Clarets keeping Leicester out and that could result in another win for the away side.

Premier League Preview and Prediction: Burnley vs Arsenal

Competition: Premier League – Burnley vs. Arsenal

Venue: Turf Moor – Saturday, April 12 – 17:30 BST (12:30 ET)

Match Odds: Burnley 5/1 – Draw 16/5 – Arsenal 8/15

Match Preview

Burnley host the in-form Arsenal in the Premier League‘s evening game at Turf Moor this Saturday as their battle against relegation continues.

Burnley have just one win in their last ten games, but it has to be noted that was against the champions Manchester City at Turf Moor and they come into this game off the back off a 0-0 draw against Tottenham.

The Clarets are currently sitting 19th in the Premier League table and are running out of time to save themselves from the drop.

With every team in the bottom five on the edge, their fight will still have many twists and turns but they have to start picking up points and it doesn’t come much tougher than this.

Arsenal are the in-form team in the league after winning their last seven on the bounce, which has made them Chelsea’s closest rivals for the title and they’ve pushed themselves up into second in the table.

Arsene Wenger‘s men have clicked into form at a vital stage of the season and this run will certainly help them attract big names in the summer.

Sean Dyche‘s men have to take the same approach to this tie as they did from their astonishing win over Man City almost a month ago and they need to make their home advantage count during this run-in if they are to stay up.

It should be a tough, hard-fought tie with both sides having so much to play for at this stage of the season.

Team News

Burnley are set to have five sidelined as Steven Reid, Ross Wallace, Dean Marney, Kevin Long and Matt Taylor are all recovering from injuries. Sean Dyche will be hoping forward George Boyd can produce another moment of magic to continue his latest stint of giant killing.

Embed from Getty Images

Arsenal will be without Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, while Laurent Koscielny and Wojciech Szczęsny will be fighting to be fit following minor injuries. Wenger will need his goal-machine Olivier Giroud to keep the goals coming as he has seven in his last six. His partnership with Alexis Sanchez has proved to be a hit.

Key Points

Burnely’s last five: L/L/W/L/D

Arsenal’s last five: W/W/W/W/W

Key Stat: Winning Streak – Arsenal’s seven-game winning streak has seen them climb up into second and a push for the title is an aim even this late on. Their next game against Chelsea is possibly the biggest Premier League tie of the season.

Key Player: Olivier Giroud – An easy choice. Giroud is the man in form and now has a better strike-rate this season than fellow forward Alexis Sanchez. The Frenchman has notched an impressive 14 goals in 20 games.

Score Prediction

Burnley 1-3 Arsenal – Arsenal’s momentum will overpower a spirited Burnley side fighting for their Premier League status.
