Match Odds: Seattle 4/9 – Draw 100/30 – LA Galaxy 5/1

Seattle Sounders vs LA Galaxy: Preview

The Seattle Sounders welcome LA Galaxy to CenturyLink Field on Sunday night as Sigi Schmid returns to his former club with a struggling LA side.

The Sounders come into the weekend at the top of the West. However, they could be down in third by the time they kick off on Sunday, depending on other results.

Seattle drew 1-1 in back-to-back Cascadia Cup clashes against rivals Vancouver and Portland. They are unbeaten in ten home games in MLS, having last lost in front of their own fans back in May.

LA Galaxy are 11 points outside the playoffs heading into the weekend. That margin could be even greater by the time this game kicks off. Another defeat would surely end their hopes of making the postseason.

The Galaxy picked up their first MLS win in two months last time out. That 3-0 win against Colorado snapped a nine-game winless run. If they can make it two wins on the spin, they will believe they can make a dramatic late charge for the playoffs.

But LA have lost five consecutive away games in all competitions. Sigi Schmid might be returning to his old stomping ground, but he’s unlikely to find any joy with his new team.

This will be the last of three meetings between the two this season. Seattle won 3-0 at StubHub Center back in April, before they played out a 0-0 draw in Schmid’s first game in charge of the Galaxy in July.

Seattle Sounders vs LA Galaxy: Team News

Seattle Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer will be without Nouhou Tolo after his red card last time out. Brad Evans is injured, while Harry Shipp is listed as ‘questionable’.

LA Galaxy are still without four players through injury. Robbie Rogers, Sebastian Lletget, Pele van Anholt and Baggio Husidic are all out for the season. Romain Alessandrini and Jermaine Jones are one booking away from suspension.

Seattle Sounders vs LA Galaxy: Key Points

Seattle Sounders’ last five: W/W/W/D/D

LA Galaxy’s last five: L/L/L/L/W

Key Stat: Seattle Sounders are unbeaten at home in ten MLS games.

Key Player: Clint Dempsey – The Sounders star has seven goals in his last eight MLS outings. He will be looking to keep his form going as Seattle look to stay atop the West.

Seattle Sounders vs LA Galaxy: Prediction

Seattle Sounders 3-1 LA Galaxy – Goals are to be expected on Sunday night. The Galaxy have to go for it, given their position in the West. Anything other than a win for the visitors would likely spell the end of their playoff hopes. Seattle are a force at home though and will be wanting to stay at the top of the West for the rest of the season. The hosts should prove too strong.

LA Galaxy vs Seattle Sounders: Preview

LA Galaxy host Seattle Sounders on Saturday night in what is surely the biggest game of the weekend. The reason? Sigi Schmid. Major League Soccer’s most successful manager is back. His job is to get the Galaxy back to the top. And his first test will be against former club Seattle.

It’s been a year and three days since Schmid was sacked by the Sounders after seven-and-a-half years of service. Now he has to inspire some confidence into his newly adopted LA Galaxy team, and fast.

The Galaxy are 9th in the West coming into the weekend. They’re not used to that end of the table and have now lost five-straight MLS games. Last week’s 4-3 defeat at New England proved to be Curt Onalfo’s final game as he has made way for Schmid.

The Galaxy know they have the squad to climb the table over the remaining weeks of the season. They are currently five points behind Vancouver Whitecaps in the final playoff slot, but have played one game more.

Seattle Sounders come into the weekend in good form after winning back-to-back home games last week against DC United and San Jose Earthquakes. They scored seven goals in those two thrilling outings and have now won three on the spin in MLS.

Their upturn in form has fired them back into the top six and back into the picture for the Western Conference lead. They trail FC Dallas by just four points coming into this one.

It was this time last season that saw Seattle start their fine run towards the MLS Cup title. They only lost two of their final 14 league games to force their way into the most unlikely of playoff spots. Another strong end to the season can’t be ruled out.

This will be the second meeting between the pair of three this season. Seattle stunned LA by winning 3-0 at StubHub back in April. That came after they won 4-2 at LA last September. They are looking to make it three-straight wins away at LA Galaxy for the first time ever.

LA Galaxy vs Seattle Sounders: Team News

LA Galaxy might roll out a 4-3-3 with Schmid now back at the helm. However, Jack McBean will serve a one-match suspension and is unavailable. Robbie Rogers, Baggio Husidic and Sebastian Lletget all remain injured. LA confirmed the DP signing of Jonathan Dos Santos on Thursday and he will likely be in line for a first MLS start here.

Seattle Sounders will be hoping Clint Dempsey and Jordan Morris are fit to start after the pair helped the USA to win the 2017 Gold Cup on Wednesday night. Nicolas Lodeiro is back after serving his suspension. A knee sprain is keeping Osvaldo Alonso on the sidelines for a few more weeks.

LA Galaxy vs Seattle Sounders: Key Points

LA Galaxy’s last five: L/L/L/L/L

Seattle Sounders’ last five: D/D/W/W/W

Key Stat: LA Galaxy have the league’s worst home form this season. They have picked up just six points from a possible 30 at StubHub.

Key Player: Romain Alessandrini – If anyone is going to carry LA out of their slump, it’s the man who’s done it more than anyone else this season already. Alessandrini has been good in his debut MLS campaign, scoring eight times and assisting eight more.

LA Galaxy vs Seattle Sounders: Prediction

LA Galaxy 2-2 Seattle Sounders – The arrival of Schmid should spark a change at the Galaxy. But it’s hard to tell if it will inspire them to an immediate improvement against a strong Sounders outfit here. With the attacking qualities that both sides possess, it’s easy to see this one being high-scoring. But ultimately, this looks like it could end all square.

Seattle’s season has been a difficult one for fans to take so far, they sit 9th in the West and trail the top six by seven points.

Sigi Schmid is under a huge amount of pressure to get his Sounders side playing to work up the table, finishing outside the playoff places would be disastrous but there is plenty of time to turn things around.

Sounders come into this one off the back of their 1-1 draw with Toronto, a positive result that ended a two-game losing streak. They must now build upon that point and aim to take all three this time out.

Seattle Sounders vs Philadelphia Union

LA Galaxy are sitting 4th in the West and will be far happier with how their season is currently going compared to their opponents.

There are still a lot of things that Galaxy need to improve on, especially away form, as they have only won one of their last 13 on the road.

Galaxy come into this one off the back of their 2-0 win over Vancouver, ending a seven-game winless run. Now is the time for LA to find form and really push on to challenge for the Supporters’ Shield.

Bruce Arena will be pleased to see some of his star players back in the side and on form, Robbie Keane scored on his return last time out and Steven Gerrard played a key role with both assists. He will be expecting his experienced players to step up here.

This is the first of two consecutive home games for Seattle, giving them the chance to pick up some much needed points. Scoring goals has been a problem though, as they have only averaged a goal per game so far this season, so this is something they have to improve upon.

Seattle Sounders welcome Montreal Impact to CenturyLink Field on Saturday night as they look to make amends to their woeful start to the 2016 season.

The Sounders have lost all three of their games and are bottom of the Western Conference as a result. They come into this one off the back of their 2-1 home loss against Vancouver and need to pick up quickly.

Sigi Schmid will be more than concerned by this start to the season and will already be feeling intense pressure. His side must pick up their first win as soon as possible otherwise they could be at risk of confidence dropping to rock bottom, while finding themselves in a long run of bad form.

A win here wouldn’t even take Seattle off bottom spot but it’s not all doom and gloom, there is plenty of time to turn things around. But that change needs to happen, otherwise it could become a difficult season for the Sounders faithful to endure.

Seattle Sounders vs Vancouver Whitecaps 2016

By contrast, Montreal Impact have had a great start to 2016 and are sitting top of the Eastern Conference after their first three outings.

They won their opening two ties but do come into this one off the back of their 2-0 loss away against FC Dallas.

Mauro Biello will be delighted with his side but their loss last time out shows there is still room for improvement – they will see this as a great chance to continue their good run of form against Seattle, who they have had the better of more often than not.

Seattle Sounders 1-2 Montreal Impact – It’s tough to see things drastically improving for Seattle in the short term as they haven’t been good enough in their opening three games. MLS Preview and Prediction: Seattle Sounders vs Sporting Kansas City

Competition: Major League Soccer – Seattle Sounders vs. Sporting Kansas City

Venue: CenturyLink Field – Sunday, March 6 – 19:00 ET (00:00 GMT)

Match Odds: Seattle 5/6 – Draw 5/2– Kansas City 16/5

Match Preview

Seattle Sounders kick off their 2016 campaign by welcoming Western Conference rivals Sporting Kansas City to CenturyLink Field on Sunday evening.

Both these sides fell short in the playoffs last season. Reaching the 2016 playoffs will be the minimum requirement once again and both sides can send out a real signal of intent here.

The Sounders will be looking to improve on last season’s fourth place finish in the Western Conference and a key start to the campaign is vital for getting early points on the board.

Sigi Schmid will be relatively pleased with Seattle’s preseason – they won their last two games after struggling with three consecutive defeats. Preseason can’t be looked into in too much depth as it doesn’t compare to the intensity of the real action, so it will be interesting to see how Seattle get going here.

Their two CONCACAF Champions League games against Club America will have helped preparations despite crashing out 5-3 on aggregate.

Sounders started the 2015 campaign with a 3-0 win and will look to replicate that this weekend. Their midseason wobble, where they lost six in seven games, probably cost them the Supporters’ Shield – they cannot afford a repeat of that this time around.

Seattle Sounders vs FC Dallas Fans

Sporting Kansas City struggled to get going in their 2015 campaign. It took them four attempts to get their first win and they will be looking to get off to a flyer here in what is a tricky opener.

Kansas City are unbeaten in their last three outings against Seattle, winning one and drawing two, and a win here would be a remarkable confidence booster to get things going for their 2016 regular season.

Peter Vermes’ side had an unbeaten preseason and will be looking to use that momentum heading into this tie. They finished 6th in the Western Conference last season and will be looking to improve on that and challenge for the Supporters’ Shield this time around.

Team News

Seattle Sounders have no injury concerns heading into the new campaign. The squad has undergone a little reshape though. The departure of Obafemi Martins will be a big role to fill and it appears Schmid is entrusting Jordan Morris with that task. He penned the highest paid contact for a homegrown player in Major League Soccer history so big things are expected from him. Joevin Jones and Michael Farfan will be hoping to make their Sounders debuts.

Sporting Kansas City will also be pleased not to have any major injuries heading into this one. However Ike Opara and Graham Zusi are doubts after picking up knocks towards the end of preseason. The squad has had minimal change which could be a plus for them this season, as players will continue to develop a great understanding of each other on the field. New signings Justin Mapp and Brad Davis will hope to feature.

Key Points

Seattle Sounders’ preseason form: L/L/L/W/W

Sporting Kansas City’s preseason form: W/D/D/D

Key Stat: Goals – Seattle have scored at least two goals in six of their last seven home Major League Soccer outings.

Key Player: Clint Dempsey – The obvious choice! Dempsey is easily the Sounders’ key man, as he makes them tick. His role in an injury-hit 2015 campaign was still immense. In the 20 games he featured in, Seattle only lost three times and he contributed to them finding the net 20 times, with ten goals and ten assists.

Score Prediction

Seattle Sounders 2-1 Sporting Kansas City – Seattle to start their 2016 regular season with a win. They won their last two games of preseason before their Champions League clashes, and they will have put them into good shape. The Sounders should make home advantage count in an action packed game. The last meeting between these sides was a 0-0 draw and Seattle will not want to continue their winless run against SKC in an important opener.

2016 MLS Season Preview: Seattle Sounders

As the 2016 MLS season edges ever closer, we’ll be publishing each team’s MLS 2016 Season Preview. Today we take a look at what the Seattle Sounders could achieve this season.

Seattle Sounders had a solid 2015 campaign, finishing 4th – nine points off top spot – but they will still be disappointed they fell short in the playoffs once again. They reached the Conference Semifinals, before being knocked out on penalties to eventual winners and fierce rivals Portland Timbers. The Sounders will expect nothing less than reaching the playoffs once again in 2016 as head coach Sigi Schmid has made some key additions to his squad. He has lost a talisman in Obafemi Martins but there is plenty to be positive about heading into the new campaign. Seattle ended the 2015 regular season unbeaten in eight games and will now hope to start 2016 in the same rich vein of form.

Last Season’s Finish:

Western Conference – Position: 4th – P34 – W15 – D6 – L13

What Needs To Change This Year?

Seattle need to lose less games – it’s as simple as that. They only won two more games than they lost, which ultimately cost them from potentially winning the Western Conference in 2015. The Sounders are a side quite capable of beating any opponent but they mustn’t rely too heavily on their key players. Clint Dempsey is obviously a massive influence on the side, so if in the unfortunate occurrence of him picking up knocks, they have to find a way of still picking up points. Schmid’s side have three of their first five fixtures at CenturyLink Field so they need to make that a fortress once again and get off to a flyer.

Key Changes:

InsTyler Miller – Goalkeeper, Joevin Jones – Defender, Jordan Schweitzer – Midfielder, Michael Farfan – Midfielder, Nathan Sturgis – Midfielder & Jordan Morris – Forward

Outs: Troy Perkins – Goalkeeper, Andres Correa – Defender, Leonardo Gonzalez – Defender, Michael Azira – Midfielder, Gonzalo Pineda – Midfielder, Thomas – Midfielder, Andy Rose – Midfielder, Lamar Neagle – Midfielder, Marco Pappa – Midfielder, Chad Barrett – Forward & Andy Craven – Forward

Key Player:

Clint Dempsey – Forward – The obvious choice. Dempsey is a standout performer for Seattle and deals amazingly well with the pressure of providing not only for his side, but also for the fans. His 2015 campaign was riddled with injury but the USMNT star was highly influential in the games he featured in – contributing to an average of a goal or assist per game (ten goals and ten assists in his 20 appearances). Seattle only lost three of the 20 games in which Dempsey played in so we can see how much he means to his side.

One to Watch:

Embed from Getty Images

Jordan Morris – Forward – There is a lot of expectation on the new signing. He has penned the highest paid contact for a homegrown player in Major League Soccer history. With the departure of Obafemi Martins, Morris has some huge boots to fill, but that could play to his advantage and the youngster could quite quickly become a fan favourite for Sounders. Morris is expected to come in and play on the right side of the attack and get at opposition defenders with his pace from day one.

Predicted Finish:

Western Conference – 4th – We expect another solid season from Seattle and they should make a playoff spot quite comfortably. Sounders fans may well be expecting more than 4th from their side but as we keep mentioning the Western Conference is extremely competitive. The loss of Martins may have some impact on Sounders but we don’t consider it to be crippling to them and expect a repeat of last season’s finish in the regular season.

What are you expecting from Seattle Sounders in 2016?

Sigi Schmid “very proud” after Sounders’ 2-2 draw with Club America

The CONCACAF Champions League sprung back into life on Tuesday night with the first legs of the quarterfinals getting underway. Seattle Sounders earned a 2-2 draw at home to Club America in what was their first competitive match of 2016, with Clint Dempsey scoring both of the Sounders’ goals.

Seattle had the daunting prospect of hosting reigning champions Club America in a tricky looking game but will be pleased with their performance, even if the result wasn’t what they wanted.

Dempsey’s performance in particular will have delighted the capacity crowd of 42,836 at CenturyLink Field – a club record for a CONCACAF Champions League match – with the forward looking very sharp on either side of the ball.

His excellent free-kick before halftime put Seattle in front, before a very quick response from the Liga MX giants made it 1-1 at the break. Dempsey then headed the Rave Green back in front in the 52nd minute, only for Oribe Peralta to net a valuable second goal for Club America.

Seattle head coach Sigi Schmid was pleased with the performance of his players, despite letting a lead go twice at home, and thinks there are positives to take from the game heading into the second-leg.

“Obviously there are things we want to get better at moving forward, and we will,” he said after the game. “For this stage of our season, and for where they are in their season, and the quality of team they are, I thought we showed well. I was very proud with what our guys did.

“I think Clint played very well. He’s coming off the left for us – we were trying to give him some spaces there in the first half – and we needed [Andreas] Ivanschitz to push a little wider left to allow Clint to stay up higher. In the second half, he was able to stay higher, so more of his touches came in the attacking end of the field. Those are tweaks in the system that we are working on and getting better with.”

Seattle will travel to Mexico for the second-leg of their clash with Club America next Wednesday before hosting Sporting KC in their 2016 MLS opener on Sunday, March 6.
