MLS Playoffs Preview and Prediction: LA Galaxy vs Real Salt Lake

Venue: StubHub Center – Wednesday, October 25 – 22:30 ET (03:30 BST)

Match Odds: LA Galaxy 8/11 – Draw 5/2 – RSL 15/4

Match Preview

LA Galaxy welcome Real Salt Lake to StubHub Center on Wednesday night in a Western Conference Knockout Round tie, with a place in the semifinal up for grabs.

The Galaxy will be looking to make home advantage count and secure their place in the next round. They come into the tie having drawn with Dallas on Decision Day, a solid result considering how many players Bruce Arena rested.

LA will at least be looking to go one better than they did in the 2015 playoffs and advance through this stage, but they know this won’t be an easy tie.

Galaxy were unbeaten against Real Salt Lake in the regular season, with the meeting at StubHub Center ending 5-2.

Real Salt Lake come into the playoffs off the back of a poor run of form. They were forunate results went their way on the final round of fixtures, otherwise they may not have made the knockout rounds.

This is a huge chance for Salt Lake to put a disappointing end to the regular season behind them. While form is important, knockout rounds are a completely different game and Jeff Cassar has to ensure his players are ready to give their all.

RSL didn’t make the 2015 playoffs, so there is an added incentive to do well and prove to any doubters that they deserve to have made it this time around. This is also a chance for Salt Lake to put to bed a run of four consecutive losses away to LA.

Seattle Sounders vs Real Salt Lake - RSL Celebrate

Team News

LA Galaxy will be without Gyasi Zardes and Steven Gerrard. Robbie Keane could return after he has been in full training this week. Arena did rest a few of his key faces at the weekend and they will more than likely return to the starting XI here.

Match Odds: LA Galaxy 5/6 – Draw 13/5 – Whitecaps 16/5

Match Preview

LA Galaxy welcome Western Conference rivals Vancouver Whitecaps to StubHub Center on Monday evening.

Galaxy are in a bit of a rut of form and are now winless in their last seven regular season outings. However, they did manage to pick up a win in the US Open Cup on Wednesday.

Their last regular season outing was their 1-1 draw with San Jose, the first goal they had scored in over three league games.

Bruce Arena’s side have now drawn eight games this season, the second highest amount of draws in MLS 2016. They need to get back to winning ways to ensure they don’t slip out of the top six in the West as just one point separates them from eighth spot.

Vancouver Whitecaps come into this one off the back of their 2-1 win in the Canadian Championship. Their last regular season action was their 3-2 win over Philadelphia, that result ended a three game winless run.

Whitecaps are currently fourth in the West but they’re only one point ahead of Galaxy. This is the second meeting between the sides this season, they drew the earlier fixture 0-0.

Vancouver are on a three game unbeaten streak against Galaxy after they won both league meetings between the sides last season.

LA Galaxy 2-2 Vancouver Whitecaps – Yet another draw for Galaxy in a tie neither side can afford to lose. A share of the spoils wouldn’t be much of a surprise given how tight the Western Conference is at this stage of the season.

Competition: Major League Soccer – LA Galaxy vs. San Jose Earthquakes

Venue: StubHub Center – Sunday, May 22 – 19:00 ET (00:00 BST)

Match Odds: LA Galaxy 3/5 – Draw 3/1 – San Jose 9/2

Match Preview

LA Galaxy welcome San Jose Earthquakes to StubHub Center in the latest instalment of the California Clasico as part of MLS Rivalry Week this weekend.

Bruce Arena’s side extended their unbeaten run to eight games with their 2-2 draw away at Philadelphia last time out.

Galaxy sit 4th in the Western Conference, one point ahead of San Jose in 5th ahead of this tie and LA have some cushioning as they have played a game less than the Quakes.

LA boast the best goal difference in MLS and if they can continue their run of form they will have a real chance of winning the Supporters’ Shield. They trail top spot by five points but have two games in hand.

San Jose Earthquakes ended a two-game winless streak with their 3-1 home win over Houston last time out.

The Quakes haven’t won on the road in their last seven attempts, losing five and drawing two and have conceded 16 along the way.

Dominic Kinnear’s side lost their earlier meeting between the sides this season 3-1 and haven’t won any of their last five away against Galaxy.

San Jose have struggled in recent times in the Cali Clasico, winning just two out of the last ten, so a win would be a hugely celebrated result here and would move them above the Galaxy in the West.

Seattle Sounders vs San Jose Earthquakes

Team News

LA Galaxy have just the one injury concern as Alan Gordon looks set to miss out, while Jelle Van Damme is one booking away from suspension.

San Jose Earthquakes could be without up to five players as Marc Pelosi, Cordell Cato, Clarence Goodson and Mark Sherrod are all expected to miss out. Quincy Amarikwa could make the squad as he is returning to full fitness. Anibal Godoy is one caution away from suspension.

Score Prediction

LA Galaxy 3-1 San Jose Earthquakes – Galaxy to repeat the scoreline of the first meeting of the season between these sides and continue their unbeaten run. Goals are coming from all over the park for the Galaxy, who are the highest scorers in MLS with 24. San Jose haven’t had the best form in the Cali Clasico and it looks like this one has the makings of another disappointing night for the Quakes fans.

LA Galaxy welcome New England Revolution to StubHub Center on Sunday evening in a tie we expect to be hotly contested.

Galaxy are sitting 4th in the Western Conference and have been working their way up the table in recent weeks.

Bruce Arena’s side come into this one off the back of their 1-1 away draw against SKC, but he will be pleased on the most part with the performance having seen his side go a goal behind.

LA are the highest scores in Major League Soccer with 18 in their eight games, they are now unbeaten in six games, winning three and drawing three.

New England Revolution are sitting 7th in the Eastern Conference. They come into this tie off the back of their 2-2 draw with Orlando.

The Revs have only won once all season and are struggling to turn draws into wins. They are the only side who aren’t bottom of either conference to have only won one game.

Jay Heaps will be working on New England’s lack of wins but he could be in a far more difficult position, his side have only lost one in their last seven.

New England are yet to win away from home this season and this would be the perfect place to break that trend. They appear to be lacking a bit of confidence but have the foundation to turn things around.

Two Western Conference heavyweights clashed at StubHub Center on Sunday night as LA Galaxy were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against reigning MLS Cup champions Portland Timbers.

Both sides would have been looking for all three points, but ultimately had to settle for a share of the spoils after a hard-fought battle.

Fanendo Adi opened the scoring for Portland early in the second half, before a late Nat Borchers own goal earned the Galaxy a draw. LA sit fourth following the game, with Portland struggling down in ninth at this early stage.

Match Preview

LA Galaxy welcome Western Conference rivals Portland Timbers to StubHub Centre on Sunday in a standout MLS fixture this weekend.

Galaxy currently sit fourth in the West after a solid start to the 2016 campaign which has seen them lose just once in their four outings. They come into the tie off the back of their 0-0 draw against Vancouver Whitecaps – a respectable away point which they will look to build upon this weekend.

Bruce Arena will be pleased with how his side are performing in the early stages of the season and his defensive signings have made a great impact, as they have conceded the joint-second fewest amount of goals across both conferences.

Galaxy will be more than up for this tie and as always should be feeling confident at home. They have won nine of their last 11 ties at StubHub Centre and despite their squad being hit by some injuries to key players, LA will fancy their chances here.

Portland Timbers have endured a difficult opening four games to the new season and they must now push on and start to pick up points if they are to stand a chance at retaining their MLS Cup title.

Caleb Porter’s side are sitting 9th, in the depths of the West, and that isn’t where the defending MLS Cup holders would have been expecting to be at the start of the 2016 season. There is no need for Timbers fans to panic as the season is still in its early stages.

Portland were thumped 4-1 away at Orlando last weekend, a result that not many would have predicted, and they need to bounce back into action this time out with a much stronger showing.

The Timbers haven’t travelled well against Galaxy, with last season’s win at StubHub their first in eight attempts. Worryingly for Porter, his side have conceded nine goals in their fours outings, something he will be desperately trying to improve on so Portland can work their way back up the table.

If Portland can take at least a point here it gives them a great foundation to build upon heading into their next two games, which are both at home.

Team News

LA Galaxy could be without up to six players for this tie with some key faces missing through injury. Dan Kennedy, Robbie Keane and Steven Gerrard are all expected to be out, while Giovani Dos Santos, Jeff Larentowicz and Leonardo are all doubts. There will be added pressure for those filling in, but Galaxy are fortunate to have impressive depth to the squad, so they should be able to manage without those key players.

Portland Timbers have just three injury concerns. Defensive duo Andy Thoma and Liam Ridgewell are out, along with midfielder Ben Zemanski.

Key Points

LA Galaxy’s form: W/L/W/D

Portland Timbers’ form: W/L/D/L

Key Stat: Goals – These sides have shared an astonishing 24 goals in their last five meetings. If that is anything to go by we should be in for a cracker here.

Key Player: Gyasi Zardes – The Galaxy forward will be expected to step up and provide for his side in the absence in some of their key players. He has netted twice already this season and has the ability to provide opposition defenders will problems.

Score Prediction

LA Galaxy 3-1 Portland Timbers – LA Galaxy are more than capable of winning this tie despite having some key faces missing from the squad. Arena will be expecting his side to take advantage of Portland’s recent struggles and continue a very strong run of home form against their opposition. True to recent meetings between these sides there will be plenty of action and goals are to be expected.

MLS Preview and Prediction: LA Galaxy vs FC Dallas

Competition: Major League Soccer – LA Galaxy vs. FC Dallas

Venue: StubHub Center – Sunday, September 27 – 21:30 ET (02:30 BST)

Match Odds: LA Galaxy 4/7 – Draw 14/5 – FC Dallas 9/2

Match Preview

It’s third against second in the Western Conference, in one of the standout fixtures this weekend, as LA Galaxy host FC Dallas at StubHub Center.

LA Galaxy are level on points with their opponents but have played two games more, so this is an important game as both sides are pushing to win the Supporters’ Shield.

Galaxy come into this one off the back of their 3-0 away loss against Real Salt Lake and are now winless in three. Their poor away form has cost them the chance to be leading the way for the Supporters’ Shield and Galaxy know they must win all their remaining games if they are to stand a chance of the silverware.

The previous two meetings of the season between the sides have been at Toyota Stadium where they have won one of those games each. Galaxy will be hoping they can take the upper hand and pick up six of the nine points on offer from the three fixtures and make home advantage count.

FC Dallas are strong contenders for the Supporters’ Shield as they can top the Western Conference if they win their game in hand.

They come into this one off the back of their 3-1 loss away against Sporting Kansas City, which ended their three game winning streak.

FC Dallas will be aware they will allow Galaxy the chance to apply pressure in the race for the Supporters’ Shield if they don’t take anything from this game and they will not want to have to rely on their games in hand to make up for a poor performance here.

Dallas will be looking to put their winless run at StubHub Center to bed, they have not won here in six attempts, since 2010. This has the makings of a game to watch.

Team News

LA Galaxy are without Brian Perk, while Jose Villarreal and Todd Dunivant are doubts for the tie. Both sides show great discipline and have no players nearing suspension.

FC Dallas have five injury concerns. Mauro Diaz, Dan Kennedy, Bakary Soumare, Stephen Keel and Kellyn Acosta are all doubts.

La Galaxy’s form: W/W/L/D/L

FC Dallas’ form: L/W/W/W/L

Key Stat: LA Galaxy are unbeaten in their last seven home games in MLS.

Key Player: Steven Gerrard – Galaxy need Gerrard to help steer them out of their three game winless streak. He is expected to perform and lift his side when they’re underperforming.

Score Prediction

La Galaxy 2-2 FC Dallas – The sides to share the points with Dallas’ poor record at StubHub Center to continue.

MLS Preview and Prediction: LA Galaxy vs Seattle Sounders

Competition: Major League Soccer – LA Galaxy vs. Seattle Sounders

Venue: StubHub Center – Sunday, August 9 – 16:00 ET (21:00 BST – Live on Sky Sports 1)

Match Odds: LA Galaxy 4/7 – Draw 3/1 – Seattle 9/2

Match Preview

LA Galaxy host the Seattle Sounders in the latest battle between two of the best sides in MLS on Sunday night, with both looking to climb the Western Conference and regain their superiority as the season edges closer to the playoffs.

LA ended their 15-game winless road streak last weekend, beating the Colorado Rapids 3-1, and will be confident of following that up with another win here as their home form has been highly impressive this year.

Bruce Arena’s team have lost just one of their 12 home games this season and have won each of their last four, scoring 19 times in those games. When on form, they are impossible to beat and will expect to end Sunday with another three points.

Embed from Getty Images

They are still two points off the Vancouver Whitecaps in top spot in the West, but sit five points clear of Seattle in sixth.

The Sounders have been in horrendous form by their high standards of late, losing seven of their last eight in MLS. That has seen them slip down the standings and it’s imperative they turn things around quickly to have a good chance of making the playoffs.

Clint Dempsey’s return to the side last weekend couldn’t help fix the problems on the pitch as they lost 3-0 at home to Vancouver, extending their run of games without scoring to four – the worst run in the club’s history.

Seattle Sounders vs Vancouver Whitecaps Clint Dempsey

The previous meeting this season ended 1-0 to the Galaxy at StubHub Center back in April as a first-half Alan Gordon goal separated the sides. Seattle will be looking to win in LA for the first time in ten attempts but form suggests that is unlikely this weekend.

Team News

LA Galaxy remain without Brian Perk, while Jose Villarreal, Baggio Husidic and Todd Dunivant are all still doubts. Steven Gerrard and Robbie Keane should both play and could be joined by new DP Giovani Dos Santos, as he is in contention to make his debut.

Embed from Getty Images

Seattle travel to LA without Andy Craven, Andres Correa and Osvaldo Alonso, while Obafemi Martins is a doubt but looks to be closing in on a return to the side after two months out.

Key Points

LA Galaxy’s last five: L/W/W/L/W

Seattle Sounders’ last five: W/L/L/L/L

Key Stat: LA Galaxy have scored at least four goals in each of their last four home matches in MLS.

Key Player: Robbie Keane – The Irish forward has netted a hat-trick in both of the Galaxy’s last two home games and will look to pile misery on a hapless Sounders side this weekend.

Embed from Getty Images

Score Prediction

LA Galaxy 3-0 Seattle Sounders – Difficult to see any outcome other than a Galaxy win here. LA are a real force at home and the Sounders come into the game in awful form. Their fortunes are unlikely to change at StubHub Center as LA look to close in on top spot in the Western Conference.

MLS Preview and Prediction: LA Galaxy vs Portland Timbers

Competition: Major League Soccer – LA Galaxy vs. Portland Timbers

Venue: StubHub Center – Wednesday, June 24 – 23:00 ET (04:00 BST)

Match Odds: LA Galaxy 10/11 – Draw 13/5 – Portland Timbers 14/5

Match Preview

LA Galaxy welcome Portland Timbers to StubHub Center on Wednesday night in one of the seven midweek MLS fixtures.

Galaxy come into the game off the back of their 5-1 destruction of Philadelphia Union on Saturday and so spirits will be high. But they cannot afford to think this will be an easy tie.

Bruce Arena will be pleased that his side showed they are still as deadly in front of goal, but will know they have been below par by their standards for most of this campaign.

LA have only won three of their last ten regular season games and are sitting fourth in the Western Conference, level on 25 points with Wednesday’s opponents Portland.

Portland Timbers won their fourth MLS game on the bounce last weekend as they beat Houston Dynamo 2-0 at home.

Caleb Porter‘s side have been in brilliant form and they now sit third in the Western Conference, having played two games less than their opponents.

They have scored seven in their last four games which is worrying for anyone they’re are coming up against, as they are scoring freely.

Goals have been coming from all over the pitch for Portland, which makes them all the more of a threat and they will be hoping to extend their winning run to five in LA.

Team News

LA Galaxy could have four missing as goalkeeper Brian Perk is out, while Todd Dunivant and Edson Buddle are both doubtful. Bradford Jamieson IV will still require tests before the game to see if he’s recovered from a concussion picked up while with the US Under-20’s.

Portland Timbers could be without up to four players too. Ben Zemanski is out, while Diego Valeri, Dairon Asprilla and Alvas Powell are all doubts.

Key Points

LA Galaxy’s last five: W/D/L/D/W

Portland Timbers’ last five in MLS: L/W/W/W/W

Key Stat: LA Galaxy are undefeated in 27 of their last 28 home games in Major League Soccer.

Key Player: Gyasi Zardes – The pacey forward netted his fourth of the season last weekend and has a real chance to show can provide against tough opposition here.

LA Galaxy 2-2 Portland Timbers – A tight game with neither side able to come out on top. This has the potential for goals but it’s too tough to split them.

Robbie Keane’s return was a huge boost for Galaxy and he will be routing to get the side back into the form we are used to seeing as he works his way back to full fitness.

Real Salt Lake picked up three points this weekend with a 2-0 win over New York City FC, in a game they were expected to win.

Galaxy still haven’t been beaten at home in 25 games now and RSL will do well to end that run. They were thumped 5-0 in the last meeting between the sides at the StubHub Center.

This is the first of two away games for Salt Lake and Jeff Cassar will know playing both Galaxy and Vancouver Whitecaps will be very tough games.

Team News
